Sixty non-profit orga-nizations in 44 British Columbia communities have received funding sup-port from EventHostBC, including four from the Gold Pan City.

Those include the Baker Creek Enhancement So-ciety for FraserFest in the amount of $4,000; the BC Lake Stewardship So-ciety for a conference in the amount of $5,000; the Quesnel and District 4-H Council for a show and sale in the amount of $5,000; and the Friends of the Museum and Archives

Society for the Royal En-gineer’s Encampment for $1,747.

The provincial initiative was designed to encourage and support small-scale, volunteer-driven events that build community spirit, volunteer capacity and promote out-of-town visitation.

Within a total funding allocation of $250,000, grants up to $5,000 per event have now been awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis to eligible organizations.

Almost $42,000 has

been distributed to each of the six tourism re-gions: Cariboo-Chilcotin-Coast, Northern B.C., K o o t e n a y - R o c k i e s , Thompson-Okanagan, Vancouver Island and Vancouver-Coast-Moun-tains.

More than 400 applica-tions were received, rep-resenting a wide variety of community-based ac-tivities including sporting events, festivals, theatri-cal and musical produc-tions, celebrations of holidays, local landmarks, anniversary milestones

and events to raise aware-ness of specific causes.

“Hosting events not only builds community pride and volunteerism, they are also good business for our province,” Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and Minister Responsible for TransLink Peter Fass-bender said.

“Events attract visitors, bring important dollars into area businesses and create jobs. They also provide training for vol-unteers, create social and economic legacies and

diversify economies. This return on investment, matched with B.C.’s long history of successful host-ing and world-class ame-nities, makes event host-ing an ideal way to boost tourism and economic development in the prov-ince.”

“This funding is huge to us. We have been re-ally struggling to put on a summer event,” Jane Rob-erts, Bridge River Valley Community Association added.

“This funding means that next year we can re-

ally take it somewhere and put Gold Bridge on the map. Among other things, we are planning a Vaude-ville-like event and talent night so we’re hoping to get people who don’t nor-mally become involved to come out and volunteer because it will be so much fun.

“This event will anchor our whole summer and hopefully draw people from Pemberton and Lil-looet.

“We wouldn’t be able to do it without this fund-ing.”

Time has flown, the children are back in school, the rain is

a daily event and summer is nearly over. But we can still hope for a gorgeous autumn. We hope that the Oct. 4 will be as delightful as last year so that ladies gather for a lovely autumn jaunt. For some, that jaunt will be a half marathon!

And to others, the 5 km will seem as far. But all will be winners – young old, short, tall, fast, slow, competitive or not – just for taking part.

Please join us, lace up the runners and put on something funky. Bring the

whole office, club, team, group, family or… The Nelson family will have more than 10 of their ladies on the course this year!

Dates to Note for 2015

Early Registration, for $30 per adult or $20 per girl up to 19, lasts up to Sept. 16 at 9 p.m. This is also the deadline for T-shirt orders. After the Sept.16, if you wish a T-shirt, you will need to hope that the extras are in your size. Shirts this year are a raspberry/pinkish colour with black print.

Regular registration goes from Sept. 17 – Oct. 2

with a fee of $40. Then, if you still procrastinate and register on Oct. 3 or 4, it will cost you $50. But that is still inexpensive for the chance to share a morning that offers a thousand smiles.

Your race package will be ready for pick up on Oct. 3 at the Quesnel and District Recreation Centre Timber Room from 3 – 6 p.m. The room will be abuzz and the excitement still building!

Finally, race day is Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Dragon Lake boat launch. A late race package pickup will start 7:30 a.m. and late participants may still

register that morning at the race site up until 8:15 a.m. When all is said and done, when shoes are well tied and the stretching is complete, the half marathoners will begin at 8:30 a.m., the wheelers will blast off at 8:45 a.m. and the others will have a 9 a.m. start.

Beginning this week, school zones will be in effect, and there will be an increase in foot and vehicle traffic around schools and neighbourhoods, including school buses before and after school hours.

“Unfortunately there is often confusion about motorists responsibilities when approaching school buses. Rules under the BC Motor Vehicle act are designed to keep children safe when they are boarding or getting off school buses,” explains Superintendent Denis Boucher, Officer in Charge, E Division Traffic Services.

Pedestrians Pedestrians also need

to take responsibility for their safety:

• Don’t always assume you have the right of way

as a pedestrian• Try and make eye

contact with drivers before crossing the road

• do not become distracted with looking at or texting on your mobile phone while walking

• Listening to loud music on headphones can dull your senses to oncoming dangers

• Stay alert until you have safely reached the other side of the road, cars can come from all directions

• In the evening, wear bright colored clothing or a reflective arm/leg band that will help you be seen by motorists

• Be aware of parked vehicles in a parking lot or on the road. A driver may not see you between parked vehicles and you may not see them moving. Before crossing or walking through a parking lot, stop and

look left-right-left around parked vehicles. Children should avoid taking shortcuts through parking lots.

Drivers When encountering a

school bus drivers are reminded that:

• It is illegal for a vehicle to pass a stopped school bus with its red light flashing.

• The red light is a legal stop sign that has the same authority as any other stop sign.

• All vehicles must stop when the school bus displays flashing red warning lights and extends the stop signal arm. Vehicles may not pass until the flashing red lights and signals are turned off.

• All vehicles traveling in the same or opposite direction as the bus are always required to stop.

• Keep an eye out for children walking or riding their bikes to and from school.

“Closer to schools and in school zone we are also encouraging drivers to exercise greater caution, and obey the school zone speed limits. It only takes a second for a child to run out onto the road,” says Supt Boucher.

General tips for motorists around schools include:

• Slow down• Be especially careful

when driving on neighborhood streets and around school zones, always expect the unexpected.

• Every school day, unless otherwise posted, a 30km/h speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Be alert for youngsters walking to and from school as you back out

of your driveway or leave your parking garage.

• We want school children to be safe. Watch for them on bicycles, especially at intersections and driveways. Young bicyclists have a tendency to dart out of driveways without looking for traffic.

• If you decide to meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not across the street. Children can get so excited at seeing you after school they might forget safety rules

and dash across the street.

B.C. offers $1M fund, hotlineto help Syrian refugees

The B.C. government has added $1 million to its budget for helping refugees settle in the province, and has opened a toll-free information line for those who want to sponsor people fleeing violence in Syria.

Premier Christy Clark announced the funding in Vancouver Tuesday, along with a toll-free information number for community groups and private sponsors at 1-877-952-6914.

Clark said the province currently spends about $4 million a year to support the federal program that settles immigrants in B.C. The extra funds will be reserved for assistance to Syrian

refugees, she said.“It is our belief that

it’s just not good enough to totally open our doors,” Clark said. “We have to make sure that when refugees get here, we’re doing everything that we can to help them realize the Canadian dream and find their way as seamlessly as possible in to British Columbia.”

The one-time investment will be used for trauma counselling, help for for groups of citizens to navigate the refugee sponsorship process, foreign credential recognition and community and employer supports including matching training funds for those committed to hiring a Syrian refugee.

Clark said all the

federal parties have indicated they want to increase refugee intake in response to the Syrian civil war, and B.C. has supported that

position for several years. Last year Ottawa admitted about 36,000 immigrants to B.C., and about 1,500 were refugees.

“Our job isn’t to decide who’s coming in when,” Clark said. “That’s their job. Our job is to make sure we’re ready.”

In my last column “Pit bull propaganda is deadly” I described

how canines bred for hun-dreds of years to be cham-pion dog killers are not a safe family pet.

I supported facts such as pit bulls kill and severely injure more humans and animals than all other breeds combined with links to comprehensive studies, essays and statistics from several reputable sources. I also made the prediction there’d be an onslaught of hostility over my ignorance and demands that I do my research. Within moments of the article being pub-lished there were countless online comments and emails stating exactly that. It was obvious many hadn’t even bothered to read what I wrote.

I was inundated with the usual rhetoric: pit bulls get a bad rap; it’s all how you raise them; blame the deed not the breed; pit bulls are harmless wiggle butts; they were bred to be nanny dogs; it’s impossible to identify a pit bull; the media only reports pit bull attacks; poodles (or insert any other breed) bite more; you’re a dog racist; you’re a dog hater; all dogs bite; all dogs kill; cars kill more people; people kill more people; coconuts kill more people;

and the list went on.The familiar myths were

often written in the most aggressive language and tone imaginable, and not one person provided any evidence to dispute the thoroughly researched facts I presented.

As vile as some of the messages were, they failed to surprise or intimidate me - but that’s only because I’ve written on this topic before and I’ve learned what to expect from previous feed-back, as well as from read-ing comments under pit bull attack stories in the news.

“There are no bad dogs, only bad owners,” was repeated incessantly. It’s one of their most popular mantras, but how do they explain all the tragedies caused by pit bulls raised from puppyhood by good, responsible owners who trained them to be safe fam-ily pets?

People like Susan Iwicki believed this myth until her

two pit bulls destroyed the precious life of her friend’s 14-month-old son who was in her care at the time. How could this have happened when she had done every-thing right? She’d neutered and spayed her pups as soon as they were old enough, she socialized them, gave them lots of love and attention, and her three-year-old dogs had never shown any signs of aggres-sion before they suddenly assaulted her while she was holding Daxton on her hip.

His parents were shattered beyond repair, and, like every victim of one of these horrendous attacks, they were blamed for it, as was the owner. But who was really at fault? Believing the myth that it’s all how you raise them is what killed the innocent toddler. Did the pit bull advocacy camp take any responsibility in that? Of course they didn’t.

Like vultures, so many of their hardcore members preyed on the grieving mother and father with “I’m sorry for your loss, but it’s not the dog’s fault” type messages. When Jeff and Kimberly Borchardt failed to be silenced and continued to share their story, warn-ing others not to believe the lies they’d believed, the depraved vitriol spewed at them was appalling.

Despite the never ending stalking and harassment of the bereaved couple, their dedication to honour Dax-ton’s life by debunking the pit bull propaganda lives on. A multitude of attack victims and victim advo-cates have now joined them in their “won’t back down” movement.

Their mission is simple: to educate the public about dangerous dogs, primarily the fighting and gripping breeds since they’re by far the biggest risk to human and animal safety.

As stated in my last col-umn, enforced breed-specific legislation (BSL) works. It prevents maiming and deaths, and that includes the deaths of a million unwant-ed pit bulls euthanized in U.S. shelters every year due to over breeding.

No birth equals no kill, so let’s make sterilization mandatory, impose stronger dog regulations and finally end this escalating victim-ization and heartache for the protection of all.

The new school year is officially underway. Even if you don’t have kids in the

education system, there is still this sense that summer fun is behind us and now we must get down to business.Roads are busier and so are

everyone’s lives. Parents begin their everyday scramble of getting kids to and from school safely. For some young ones, this week marks their entry into the school system. For older ones, they are entering into middle or high school. Classrooms are clean and bright, with teachers and administrators rolling out the welcome mat.While education is always evolving

– big changes are coming as to how teachers teach.The stereotypical model of

educators standing in front of the classroom lecturing while students follow along from textbooks is transforming.Instead, classrooms will be

interactive with teachers discovering individual student’s passions. Teachers will direct and fuel those interests on a new learning path.It’s welcome change for students

who don’t thrive in the traditional classroom setting.If teachers can tap into what

individual students get excited about, the potential to unlock their brains from boredom and turn that into drive and passion is exciting news.The school district is already

preparing for the changes and teachers are adapting their teaching style to this new way of reaching students.There are no two students alike.

Some children thrive on tests and report deadlines – others crash and burn. Change is hard for all, but this is a directive coming from the government that parents and students should support.Individual learning has the

potential to unlock bright minds which can make for a bright future. Our future leaders and innovators are in our schools.–BP

Editor:Tom Mulcair is making a lot of

promises on his election campaign across Canada. National $15 a day childcare.

Cost to government will be $1.9 billion per year at implementa-tion and up to $5 billion per year when fully implemented. There is one catch to this promise which he will not discuss. The provinces have to come up with their share, which is 40 per cent.

How can the six have- not prov-inces come up with this kind of money. Roads, bridges and transit infrastructures at a cost of $1.5 billion a year. Restore home mail delivery at a cost of $500 million per year.

Raise guaranteed income supple-ment for seniors at a cost of $400 million a year. Hire and train 2,500 new police officers at a cost of $100 million per year. Also recently announced to improve the CPP.

Where is Mulcair going to find this extra money, and still balance the budget in his first year man-date.

Either Mulcair has a money-minting genie in a magic lamp in the trunk of his campaign bus or he has some explaining to do to voters.

If Mulcair and his NDP is elect-ed to the government of Canada, you know exactly how he intends on keeping his promises above.

The number one rule of NDP economics of finance is to BOR-ROW, TAX AND SPEND, just like the former provincial NDP gov-

ernments in B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia and soon to be voted out NDP provincial government in Manitoba

The NDP have started demolish-ing Alberta now, and will also be a one- term NDP government. Remember though, that the Al-berta NDP only won the election because of vote splitting. The Al-berta NDP won 54 seats, but only 25 were won on the NDP name. The other 29 seats were won by the splitting of the vote. Thomas Mulcair, Alberta NDP Rachel Notley and B.C. NDP’er John Horgan will not admit to this by keeping a blind eye to the truth.

Some taxpayers are saying that the federal conservatives must go, but would these taxpayers take back a former spouse from a previous divorce to re-create the nightmare, but at the same time are willing to do it with your federal government.

Presently your federal govern-ment has a leader that makes his home in Alberta and recognizes Canada from one coast to the other.

Remember the old days of elected governments that had their leaders live in Quebec. The Cana-dian border ended at the border between Ontario and Manitoba.

They forgot about B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, but not about the money we paid in taxes.

Electing Tom Mulcair, is giv-ing Canada to the province of Quebec. That will be the end of separation talk. The province of

Quebec will be laughing because of all of the suckers in the other nine provinces, that voted for the federal NDP. Quebec would now control Canada, regardless if parliament is in Ottawa.

Voting NDP is like listening to the song by Ricky Nelson, “Fools Rush In.” Voting for the pres-ent Conservative government is like listening to the song by Andy Gibb, “Why throw it all away.”

Some of you may not like the present Conservative federal government, but how many of you do not like your next door neighbours, but still don’t bother to move to another neighbour-hood. Governments are all the same, but some are better than others.

Remember, we cannot have our cake and eat it too, but the voting public have the final say on who will be government, but consider the above facts and reality instead of the heavily pushed lies and propaganda that we hear daily on the election campaign.

For those of you that are wishing for a NDP federal government, re-member what happened after one term NDP provincial governments in B.C., Ontario and Nova Scotia. The new governments had to make short term hard financial decisions on the taxpayer pocket books for long term gain, to clear up NDP mess. Is this what you wish for if the NDP are elected the federal government and then voted out after one term.

annual Cowboy and Drover Jubilee kicks off a weekend of cattle drive-themed music and poetry events on Sept. 11-13.

Registration for the Fifth Annual Northern Star Amateur Singing Competition is available until noon on Saturday Sept. 12.

Returning lineup includes Budd Webb, Ed Wahl, the Gordie West Band, the Hanson Family, Joey Only and 2011 Northern Star winner Terry Wozney.

New this year is the 2015 Kamloops Cowboy Festival Rising Star winners Mack Station, singer-songwriter

Quesnel Rotary Club is looking for a few good host families

for next year’s International Student Exchange program. Securing outgoing and in-coming students is dependent on having four host families willing to billet these students for a three-month period.

For Paula Versiani, 2008 was a banner year. That’s the year she was lucky enough to come on a Rotary Exchange to Quesnel.

In her home city of Belo Horizonte in Southeast Bra-zil, competition was stiff for the approximately 60 Rotary exchange spots.

“There were other exchange programs but Rotary offered a broader experience,” Paula said.

“I also had to be known to a Rotary member in Brazil. My grandmother knew a Rotarian.”

Canada was Paula’s top pick and fortunately her scores on the screening tests were high enough she was selected for a Canadian exchange.

The 16-year-old headed out from her home city of two million people for her one-year program in Quesnel with a population at the time of about 10,000.

After four International ights, all alone, Liz and Petrie Neave, her rst Ques-nel billet, met her at the tiny little airport.

“It was amazing, I arrived in fall, we don’t have those seasonal changes in Brazil,” she said.

“I loved the natural setting, the beauty.”

Paula loved all four of her home stay families.

“Having meals together, I had so many questions.”

At school, Paula said the rst big hurdle was the lan-guage barrier.

“I studied English all the way through school, but couldn’t understand the way people in Quesnel spoke,” she said with a laugh.

“It was all the slang.”Paula went on to say school

was basically the same and she blended in to the point many didn’t know she was an exchange student.

Friends she made during that year are still friends she contacts sometimes daily, today.

In fact Paula has made ve return trips to Quesnel to visit those friends including Ron Paull and Pat Morton whom she calls a second set of parents. They were also one of her host families back in 2008.

“Ron and Pat are more than friends, they’re part of my everyday life, we’ve shared moments over the last seven years but the biggest reward is to have people mean so much to you from a chance meeting through Rotary. They’re coming for a visit to Brazil and I can’t wait to show them Brazil.”

Paula spoke of the pro-found affect the Rotary Exchange has had on her life.

“The Rotary Exchange changed who I am. After I came to Quesnel my opinions and conceptions changed. Each billet family helped me become a little less shy and taught me the value of living in a small town and learning about being and living in a community.

“I came from a huge city and everyone is out for themselves. I learned here about social causes and how to make a difference rather than a high-priced lifestyle in a high-priced city.”

She went on to speak of the Rotary program.

“So many opportunities with Rotary take you inside a community to become part of the that community. Everyone can do the tourist-type visit but Rotary gives you so much more, experi-ences you’d never know were possible.”

For the outbound stu-dents in Quesnel who might be considering a Rotary Exchange, Paula said just learning another language, experience a new country and broadening your hori-zons is professionally smart.

She has now completed her studies and is a fully-trained lawyer. Currently she’s apply-ing for a job with the Brazil-ian Consulate in Canada.

“My Rotary experience opened doors for me with a new outlook and seeing op-portunities I wouldn’t have been open to before.”

LIFESTYLES

Although no longer living in this com-munity one well

known former resident, Florence Lavington, will celebrate her 100th birth-day Sept. 30.

Florence was born in Ya-kima, Washington, to Jose-phine and Rurick Marsh. Of the family of Florence, Leonard, John, Gordon, Richard, Leona, and Lil, only Florence and Leona (Oliver) remain. Florence’s mother Josephine was of native extraction with brothers Frank and Joe Bouchie.

Her parents came to the Quesnel area as he had

land here on the west side of the Fraser River.

Florence loved horses and her dad ran a livery stable where she helped. He built a log cabin camp where the present West Park Mall is now located and built a house on the hill that is now the Riverrock Pub

and Restaurant overlook-ing the Fraser River.

It is believed that he started Marsh’s grocery story across from the trail-er camp. Florence attended school here in Quesnel and worked as a bookkeeper at a mill on Two Mile Flat. In 1935 she married Alfred (Slim) Montgomery who had come over from Alberta. Their son Robert was born December 1937. Sandra, then Richard and Shirley joined the family. Richard moved to Bal-ize and eventually passed away. Slim passed away in 1973.

She was a member of the

Women’s Institute here in Quesnel and also in Sor-rento.

Three years later Florence married Dude Lavington and they moved to Soren-to. Dude passed away Jan. 30, 1993. Florence continued to live with her daughter Sandra.

Florence has recently be-come a resident of Bastion Place in Salmon Arm. Prior to that Sandra and Bob cared for her at their home in Sorrento. Bob and his wife live nearby. He plays guitar with Backyard Band at seniors homes.

The Vancouver Giants are one of the most respected organiza-tions in the Canadian Hockey League and have produced a number of NHL players.

Jesse Roach looks to be the next Giant to follow that path.Roach, an up and coming left winger for Vancouver and Quesnel local should look for-ward to the start of the season, as he has an opportunity to show scouts his game.

Although, he was not se-lected in his draft year it does not mean he won’t play in the NHL. Lots of players don’t get drafted and go onto great careers. Roach was a second-

rounder of the Giants in the 2012 Western Hockey League draft and scored his first goal on Nov. 29, 2014 against the Calgary Hitmen. He played for the Cariboo Cougars of the B.C. Major Midget league during the 2013-14 season and recorded 20 goals and 27 assists in 40 games. Last year, Roach’s first full season he recorded ten points in 58 games. Roach who stands 6’4 and weighs 200 pounds will be a hot commod-ity for NHL teams if he puts it all together. Although the game has been trending towards the skill side, it’s not to be under-

estimated how players with size can effect the outcome of the game. Teams utilize the size of their players, if they have it. Bryan Bickell of the Chicago Blackhawks and Milan Lucic of the

Los Angels Kings are examples of big men using their size effec-tively. Although, they aren’t the most skilled players on the ice, they impact it in different ways. Head coach Lorne Molleken

believes Roach has that capabil-ity.

“I think a player of his stature needs to be a guy that uses his size and strength to the best of his ability,”Molleken said. “When he does that I think he’ll open a lot of room for himself.”

Players don’t like getting hit, so if they’re constantly being targeted it will deter them from jumping into the offensive zone. Lorne believes that Roach needs to play a heavy game to bring the best out in him.

“The biggest thing is he’s a big body,” Lorne said. “He’s a big guy out there, so we’re working with him to play that style of game.”

According to the Director of

Media Relations/Play-by-play broadcaster, Brendan Batchelor he performed well in the first pre-season game against the Kamloops Blazers, where he recorded an assist in the Giants 5-3 win.

His coach echoed that same sentiment. “I thought he played extremely well,” Lorne said. “Strong on the forecheck, put pressure on the pucks all over, was physical and that’s what we need him to do.”

If Roach can learn to use his size and develop his game it would be a huge asset moving forward, as he could catch the eyes of general managers and scouts, closing in on the dream of playing professionally.

The Toronto Blue Jays are on the verge of clinching a playoff spot for the first time in 22 years. The Jays, who are in first place, last made a playoff appearance in 1993, when they won their second World Series championship. Due to the dominance Toronto has shown in the second half of the season, sup-port from fans has been outstanding. The acquisition of Troy Tulowitzki, Ben Revere and David Price has generated a buzz, not only in Toronto but around the country. Sell out’s at the Rogers Centre are the norm, as it’s difficult to find tick-ets. This hasn’t been seen since the early 90s when they won back-to-back cham-pionships. No one wants to miss a game, as the Jays are closing in on the playoffs. Fans expect the Jays to win every game

and compete for the championship with the roster General Manger, Alex Antho-poulos has assembled. The race for the east will go down to the wire with the New York Yankees follow-ing closely behind. Josh Donaldson has been hitting the cover off the ball, as he’s secured his name to be in the running for Most Valuable Player in the American League. He’s hitting over .300 with 115 RBI’s and 37 home runs. The Jays will play the Yankees two more times before the season ends, which will be crucial to see who comes out of the division and who gets the first wild card po-sition. Whoever gets the wildcard will have to play an elimination game with the second place wild card team, to see who goes to the playoffs. We can only wait and see if the dream of returning to the playoffs happens, but expectations will be high.

The Barriere Rodeo took place this past weekend Sept. 5-7 at the North Thompson Fall Fair. Taking first place in bareback was Cash Kerner of Savona with a score of 78 with a payout of $520, second was Denver DeRose of Ka-mloops with a score of 72 earning $397.

Winning in calf rop-ing was Cody Brett of Silver Valley, Alta with a score of 8.3 with a payout of $740 and local Steve Lloyd sec-ond with a score of 9.2 winning $479. Saddle Bronc saw Quesnel’s, Steve Hohmann plac-ing first with a score of 70. Quesnel shined at Jr. barrel racing plac-ing first and second. Taylor Cherry fin-ished with a score of 17.366 earning $223

and Emma Langevin ended with a score of 17.714 earning $170. Jr. Breakaway rop-ing saw Quesnel lo-cals finish third and fourth. Dyson Leneve came third, scoring a four earning $105 and Perri- lyne Leneve finished with 4.3 win-ning $58. Bull riding saw Quesnel’s Lane Cork take home sec-ond place with a score of 80 earning $566. The next rodeo will be the BCRA champi-onship, which will be hosted this weekend Sept.11-13 in Quesnel at Alex Fraser Park. Admission is $10 dol-lars for advanced tick-ets and $12 at the gate for adults. For seniors and youths the cost is seven dollars in ad-vance and nine dollars at the gate, children six and under are free.
