More funding for health care assistants at CNC
Like many of you in the Cariboo, my first real significant personal experience with requiring additional support from our health care system has come in providing support to aging loved ones. In truth, ensuring we have sustainable, adequate health care in the Cariboo is one of the main reasons I decided several years ago to get involved in provincial politics.
And since being elected as your MLA, it has been something that I have been a passionate advocate for and I am pleased that this week we are continuing to see the result of several years working behind the scenes to ensure we are being heard and that we have the services we need.
At the College of New Caledonia campus yesterday, I was happy to welcome Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson for the announcement of more funding skilled health care workers.
The funding, more than $150,000, will go towards funding 18 additional health-care assistant spaces – which will help us meet the demand for new workers. We want to align the needs of the community with the proper training and this will help make sure the region has the right workers.
Today, I am also very pleased to have Health Minister Terry Lake in Quesnel touring GR Baker and Dunrovin Lodge, meeting with doctors and providing an important update on the status of the new primary care clinic.
As your MLA, I’m constantly working with Northern Health, the city, local physicians and others to ensure we have the resources we need.
We have been able to recently recruit a new ER physician, three international medical graduates, and a practice ready assessment candidate.
Over the last two years we have also welcomed other specialists including an ear nose and throat surgeon, a second internal medicine specialist, and a full time psychiatrist.
Health care is one of those issues that impacts us all too varying degrees and we never know when we are going to come into contact with the system. We just know we want the best care available.
For those of us who are really lucky, it’s just regular check-ups at the doctors. Others will need the expertise and experience of doctors and nurses because of an emergency situation. And sadly, some will become all too familiar with the health care system due to illness.
But the one common-thread is the quality of the people who make the system work. From the specialist to the registered nurse to the technician – they are united by a desire to help and make people better and they are well trained.
And it is government’s job to make sure that, as best we can, the professionals have the tools they need to provide you with the care you need.

With Jessica Joly B.Sc. (Pharm)Have you had your eyes checked lately? Your eyes are a great predictor of health problems. Your optometrist will check the blood vessels on your retina at the back of the eye. The condition of these blood vessels could indicate heart disease, high blood pressure or a risk of stroke. Even in young people, an eye exam could reveal a health problem in an otherwise healthy person. Eye exams are good medicine. The names for new drugs today are getting quite weird. They have to be unique and be understood in any language. We are seeing more new drug names with the letters “Q”, “X” and “Z” in them while “W” is seldom used. And the names are getting longer, many with more than four syllables and often hard to pronounce.Insomnia is a symptom not a disorder in itself. It can be caused by stress, depression, anxiety, restless legs, caffeine, shift work, pain and even medications. It’s very important to sleep well. If you aren’t, see your doctor. When a parent receives a note from the school that their child has lice, it’s not a happy time. Depending on where you live, your child could be sent home till the problem resolves. A parent’s best friend in these cases is a fine-tooth metal nit-comb with long tines to comb through the child’s hair regularly to remove nits. Daily or every other day is necessary and sometimes for two weeks. For more information about lice and treatment, you can talk to our pharmacists. Head lice is a common problem and with a bit of knowledge about the problem and a lot of patience, it can be controlled. We can help.

Walk for JusticeA group of people from Manitoba (above) are on a Walk for Justice to raise aware-ness about the missing and murdered aboriginal women in Canada and to in-crease support for their call for a national inquiry. They arrived in Quesnel just after 8 p.m. Friday night and were greeted by an enthusiastic local group (below) including Maureen Boyd, whose daughter Sandra was murdered this spring. The walkers destination is Prince Rupert.

For the first time, the North Cariboo Draft Horse and Mule Association – our local driving club – hosted a dressage day at Knauf’s Ranch where dressage was performed by Western riders, English riders and of course the drivers. Our judge for the day was Bonnie Kennedy from Prince George and she was kept busy all day with riders and drivers from Quesnel as well as drivers from Prince George, 150 Mile, 108 area and Fort St. John. Saturday was spent with informal practice rounds for the drivers through the cones course and the field drive (just over 2 km) with three hazards to go through. It was great to see club members helping one another out, learning and doing new things and having a great time afterwards at the dinner. It was a fantastic weekend to wind up our competitive season and we will all continue to enjoy driving in the upcoming fall weather.Karen Powell photos

COMMUNITY
Volunteerism is huge in Quesnel with
all kinds of events and fund raisers help-ing with many causes. Local citizens have accomplish a lot here in Quesnel and the surrounding commu-nity. I’m very proud to say Quesnel with its volunteers keep our City thriving.
It takes a lot of planning for Billy Barker Days events and we want to thank all of the volunteers who organize Billy Barker Days. Where would be without theses volunteers? Sadly as these years are passing many volunteers are slow-ing down and we will continually need new volunteers to step up and give their time.
Shiraoi Twinning Society has been an entree in the Billy Barker parade for 20 years. On our Shiraoi float we use our “Tori gate” as part of our decorating most of those years.
A Tori Gate for those who don’t know is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at every entrance within Shinto shrines in Japan, also known as “sacred bird gate.”
Our Twinning society has been fortunate to have had many members
volunteering over these 35 years. We are starting our 35th year of twinning with sister city Shiraoi, Japan. We are still one of the most active twinning societies.
We also want to thank Rose Gaetz, Doug and Helen Jameson, Andrea Sturt, Karen and Brad Powell, Bernice Heinzelman, Cody Crick, Elizabeth Hunter our current secretary and many more combined they keep our Shiraoi Twinning Society and many other aspects of the community run-ning smoothly.
Many members have retired, moved on to other interests, some have moved out of Quesnel such as Marie Skinner, Steve and Joan Wallace, Ester Blaylock, Sandra Sandaker , Stacy and Rena Bruce, Frank McKelvie, Bessie Robinson, Wolfgang and Christa Musslick, Harry and Sue Smith, Cheryl Scanlan, Kelly Atkinson, Cynthia Bernier and many more.
Other’s have slowed down their volunteer-ing, Dennis Lessard along with his wife who has been ill and passed away recently, our dear friend Mi-chele Lessard, she will be missed. Michele
was very active in our twinning society and our community for many years.
Thank you To-moko Arisue who has been very busy as our President for the twinning society and recently returned from Shiraoi, Japan with the 19-member delegation on July 10.
Some of the student delegation were able to participate with the Shiraoi float this July.
We had a great bunch of volunteers helping with the float this year. We had a small commit-tee, Sachiko Su-zuki, Ryoko Hosaka, Junko Lacy, along with Doug and Helen Jamieson.
We also want to thank our volunteers who rode or walked with the float, they
are Abby Fisher, Ezra and Tobias Nestle, Jayden Dochou, Nolan Person, Kyah Aulakh, Branda and Kyle Eggert and the adults, Rose Gaetz, Sachiko Suzuki, Eliza-beth Hunter, Martha Waldon and Cody Crick.
Thank you all for participating.
We’re always in need of new volun-teers not only Ques-nel Shiraoi Twinning Society but through-out our community.

Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett spent much of last
week in Alaska, trying to assure local fishermen and environmentalists that B.C.’s mine approval process is “basically the same” as Alaska’s.
Bennett visited an abandoned mine in northwest B.C. that continues to leak acid and metal pollution into the Taku River, vowing to supervise cleanup by a new operator. He noted that one of B.C.’s proposed new mines includes a 23-km pipe system to move ore out of the shared watershed for processing.
This is typical of the discourse between B.C. and our American cousins. Only our industry is questioned.
Meanwhile in Colorado, the latest mine spill disaster was blamed on a mistake by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. And in Alaska as in the rest of the U.S., new metal mines such as the giant Pebble project depend on the same engineering and testing as ours.
Here in Victoria, the Fantasy Island dialogue about oil continued, with
Green Party leader Elizabeth May calling a news conference to announce she is (brace yourself) opposed to pipelines and tankers on the B.C. coast. She stood at Clover Point, where daily Alaska crude tankers sail past, many on their way to vast refinery complexes just out of sight at Anacortes and Cherry Point in Washington. A good portion of B.C.’s gasoline comes from there.
Without a drunk-captain incident since 1989, these tankers load up at the terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Let’s take a closer look.
For 47 years, the pipeline has pumped huge volumes of oil across Alaska from the charming northern outpost of Deadhorse to Valdez in the south, just east of Anchorage where cruise ships dock.
In his new book, Rust: The Longest War, science writer Jonathan Waldman calls it “the biggest, baddest oil pipeline in the world.
“From Prudhoe Bay to Prince William Sound, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System stretches 800 miles, which leaves engineer Bhaskar Neogi accountable for one of the heaviest metal things in the Western Hemisphere, through which the vast majority of Alaska’s economy flows,” Waldman writes. “Daily, the four-foot steel tube spits out $50 million of oil.”
It was once the largest private infrastructure in the U.S. Today it’s the most regulated pipeline in the world, with planes flying infrared sensors to detect leaks of warm oil and “line walkers” looking for soft spots in the permafrost.
And this isn’t low-fat, shade-grown oil for Seattle fuel-sippers. It struggles to flow, with a black asphalt bottom and thick wax that has to be scraped out of the pipeline by the ton with giant “pigs” that clean and monitor walls for corrosion.
The five Prudhoe Bay oilfields have been declining in production for 20 years,
to the point where the Trans-Alaska pipeline now carries about a quarter of its design capacity. It’s expected to run out around 2040, but for now Valdez still loads more than a tanker a day.
Waldman writes that when North America’s largest oilfield was discovered in 1968, companies first considered extending the Alaska Railroad up to Deadhorse. But they would have needed 63 trains a day of 100 cars each. Trucks, cargo planes and even nuclear-powered submarines running under the Arctic ice were briefly considered.
Since we had a bit of hand-wringing last week about a small earthquake near Fort Nelson that may or may not have been triggered by hydraulic fracturing, it’s worth noting that Trans-Alaska oil also causes noticeable tremors as it rushes down the Chugach Mountains to a sudden stop at Valdez. But those are American earthquakes, so no story there.

Election shaping up
It appears as though all of the candidates for the Federal riding of Cariboo-Prince George have
put their names forward. The NDP were a little late get-
ting out of the gate, however, with two more months of campaigning it probably doesn’t matter that much because there is lots of time for the candidates to make their pitch to the voters.Todd Doherty from Prince George,
running for conservatives, has been campaigning for a couple of months.Prince George businessman Trent
Derrick will represent the NDP as he beat Debora Munoz and Laura Zim-merman of Williams Lake.Derrick will run against Liberal
Tracy Calogheros, Conservative Todd Doherty, Green Party Richard Jaques, Independent Sheldon Clare, and Christian Heritage party Adam De Kroon. It should be a good political race
for Cariboo-Prince George federal riding.I suspect Doherty will win the rid-
ing by a close vote.I also think that the Conservatives
will win the election, however, it could be very close and that would mean a minority government. The only elections signs I see so far
are those of Conservative candidate Todd Doherty.I suspect there will be a lot more
candidates signs before we hit the election day in late October.I hope whoever wins the election in
our riding in October will take the time to visit Quesnel and be in touch with the voters. As mentioned before, I would hope
we have a really good turnout for voting in this election.Sixty-one percent of Canadians cast
ballots in the last Federal election.Let’s hope more people get out to
vote.I cannot understand why folks can-
not be bothered to take a half hour out of their lives to go to the polling station and cast a vote.As the old saying goes, ‘vote for
whom you please, but please vote.’– Black Press

Editor:Campaign trail littered with
empty ‘water bottles’When there’s a drought, peo-
ple understand the long-term implications but still need to be prodded into cutting back on their water consumption. Most people do it willingly and a few cheat. But none of us expect the restrictions to be lifted until the reservoirs are once again filled to a pru-dent level.
Where does this collec-tive common sense go when there’s an election? Canada is teetering on the edge of a recession and the global economy is facing what could be called an economic drought. Our politicians, even the arrogant ones who preach fiscal restraint and rant against government handouts, are tossing around expensive election promises as if they are empty water bottles and then claiming only their party has the magic necessary to create the rain to fill them.
Some voters, who hope to get something for nothing, flock to the party promising the biggest bottles. We could blame the politicians for their charlatan-like behaviour; however, they are merely pan-dering to the wants, wishes and whims of the voters. Apparently many of us hate the thought of having to live within our means.

When Ani Kyd was looking to escape the Van-couver-rat race, she never expected to nd herself in the tiny town of Hixon, thoroughly enjoying the slower lifestyle and intimate neighbour-hood. But she has learned to love it and plans to explore her musical options in this bucolic lifestyle. However, performing is never far from her lexicon and the singer/songwriter/producer/director/actor is taking to the road with a rare one-woman show beginning in Prince George Sept. 3. She will be down the road in Wells at the Jack-O-Clubs Sept. 5.
Ani Kyd has been playing well-received live shows in both Canada and the U.S. for more than 20 years. She commands attention in her perfor-mances, whether she is the intense front-woman of a full, kick-butt band, or playing guitar or bass for another artist, or an actor portraying the meek and mild Mary in “Attack of the Loving Dead.”
Ani is a very versatile singer, ranging from ex-treme, deep, dark heavy metal; to ambient, pretty, light female vocals. She plays guitar, bass, drums and saxophone and arranges and writes all of her own music.
Her bands have played shows with Our Lady Peace, Bif Naked and Paul Hyde just to name a few.
She has worked with some great musicians, including Meegan Brad eld (Limblifter), Lisa Wagner (cello player for Moist) and Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Dethklok) among oth-ers. Ani has had the pleasure of playing guitar for the legendary Thor and toured with him for two years. Jello Biafra produced and performed backup vocals on her self-titled debut CD Evil Needs Candy Too, which was released on Alter-native Tentacles Records in 2005.
In 2002 she formed the band Fuel Injected.45 with Stuart Carruthers (GRIP INC.) and Ash Blue (Strapping Young Lad, Unit 187) and they’re still going strong. From 2005 to 2007 she fronted the two-lead singer epic metal/rock band Approach The Throne, with Chris “Val” Valagao (Zimmers Hole) as the other singer.
Throughout Ani’s professional career she has sang backup vocals for many talented artists. She has also appeared on various compilations, including a Trooper tribute album and a Green Party CD featuring Bruce Cockburn, Bill Hender-son, Joe Keithley, and Bif Naked.
Ani Kyd is a powerful and dynamic artist who captivates her audiences with her haunting per-formances. In this rare solo tour, she will be play-ing a set of a combination of her past projects, as well as some new material from her upcoming release.
Ani will be playing acoustic slide guitar and an electric Gibson/Marshall stack combo, accompa-nied by her haunting vocals. Selections from her 2014 release Entangle as well as songs from her upcoming release will be performed with backing musical tracks.

August 30 - September 5, 2015ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Conflicting instructions make it difficult to please others this week, Aries. Try your best to meet oth-ers’ needs, and look to others for help if the need arises.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21Taurus, your stubbornness can sometimes be an asset, but don’t let it get in the way this week. Approach a task with a new perspective and don’t hesitate to solicit others’ opinions.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21Gemini, even though you are reluctant to show your hand this week, others know what’s on your mind. It’s tough for you to remain aloof when you seem like an open book.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22You are full of energy this week, Cancer, so put it to good use. Lend a hand to others who have a lot on their plates and tackle some lingering projects of your own as well.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, don’t take anything for granted this week. A project might go off without a hitch, but you need to be prepared in case it does not. Remain aware.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, you may be so engrossed in your own rou-tine that you miss some of the subtle goings-on at work. If suddenly you feel out of the loop, make an effort to be more in the know.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, speak up about a situation that you feel needs to be addressed. Your voice won’t be heard if you remain quiet, but your point of view offers some valuable insight.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, rather than focusing on your own progress this week, see what you can learn from others without making everything a competition. This can be a special learning process.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, you may be doing your best to dem-onstrate your good intentions, but others may not be satisfied with your efforts. Reexamine your approach.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20A big payoff awaits if you work hard and exercise patience this week, Capricorn. Although you may be pushing for immediate results, the outcome will take some time.

Train Station gym comes to QuesnelRYAN GRAHAM
Observer Reporter
Time to get fit Quesnel! There will be a new gym opening in Quesnel for all workout enthusi-asts and people who would like to get in shape. Train Station will have its grand opening Oct.1 on Reid Street across from Safeway. The gym is a combination of yoga, spin/cycle and all around cardio, strength and TRX, which is sus-pension training. The instructors are Gayle MacDonald, Veronica McIlvenna, Tara Fookes and Candace Miller. Classes will con-sist of pre-registered courses and drop-ins. MacDonald and Fookes specialize in cardio, strength and TRX. Miller focuses on the spin/cycling component and McIlvenna concentrates on yoga.
“Bringing all three into one,” Miller said.
The four of them wanted to combine their love and passion of fitness into one central location. All four are enthusiastic about fitness and are specialists in their given fields and they have the experience to back it up.
“For me cycle/spin and running have always been my two favou-rite things,” Miller said.
She also believes there will be a great response from the commu-nity, as all of the instructors are well-known in the fitness field.
“Our community is very much interested in keeping active,” Miller said.
With that, Miller hopes the com-munity gets a lot out of the gym and carries on with the goal of becoming healthy and fit.
“This new fitness gym continues with the active healthy living we have been trying to promote and bring to Quesnel,” Miller added.
Tara Fookes, Veronica McIlvenna, Candace Miller, and Gayle MacDonald are the instructors of Train Station Gym.Ryan Graham photo

RecipesThere’s nothing sweeter than
the joys of baking a fresh batch of cookies – especially the end results. Whether you’re baking for family, friends or treating yourself to a tasty delight, consider these simple tips the next time you’re pulling out the egg beaters and measuring cups to guarantee soft and chewy cookies every time.
Substitute margarine for butter: Margarine is the baker’s best friend. It can be used straight from the fridge to help you make some of the softest and chewiest cookies around. Not only that, soft non-hydrogenated margarine contains 80 per cent less saturated fat than butter, and has zero trans-fat. It can be substituted on a 1:1 ratio in any recipe that calls for butter or oil.
Take your time with prep: measure out ingredients beforehand to ensure you have exactly what you need. This will save time and avoid forgetting any steps.
Be creative: Think outside the recipe box and create your own custom cookies.
Satisfy any craving by adding blueberries, cranberries, axseeds, cinnamon, chocolate chips, oatmeal or almonds. One cookie recipe, endless options!
Let it cool completely before taking a bite: Hands off – even after you remove your treats from the oven, avours are still developing and textures are setting in.

Simple tips for softer, chewier cookies
The types of foods and snacks that children bring to the classroom can have a ma-jor impact on their learning. They can make the difference in a child’s focus and engage-ment throughout the day. For busy parents who need to get out the door quickly in the morning, it can be diffi cult to throw together a brain-boosting, fully-packed lunch without the right ingredients or cooperation from their kids. Here are some quick tips for parents to start the school year off right with healthy, smart lunch ideas:
Have your food groups covered
A balanced lunch to keep kids going all day requires food from all four food groups, including vegetables, fruits, grain products, and
dairy and meat alternatives. You can incorporate all of these elements with creative ideas like a take-to-school taco bar, or a healthy spin on a classic like baked chicken nuggets with fresh cut veg-gies. For picky eaters who aren’t fi lling their nutrient quota for the day, try a sup-plement specifi cally formu-lated to nourish growing bod-ies with essential nutrients like Vitamin C, to help boost young immune systems.
Get your kids involvedHealthy lunch choices
start in the grocery aisle, so why not get your children involved with this step. Take your kids grocery shopping to educate them on what is con-sidered a healthy choice and let them have a say in what goes into the cart to give
them a sense of empower-ment and responsibility. This way when these items end up in their lunch boxes they will be familiar and excited to eat them.
Choose brain foodsIt’s important to give kids
food that will keep their en-ergy and concentration levels high, rather than packaged foods loaded with sugar and sodium that will make them crash before the end of the school day. Choose grab-and-go snacks like Greek yogurt with home-made granola, or apple slices with almond butter. Omega-3 supplements not only taste delicious, but they are a perfect way to help them get essential fatty acids to help regulate mood, behaviour.
