Premiere Guest Speaker Event Our iconic guest speaker Lynn Hill will hit the stage! She will take us on a journey around the world and through the years as she recounts her life in climbing. We continue our adventure round the world in the Best NZ Film as we follow sea kayakers into the cold heart of Antarctica; and we follow the cold again climbing the mountains of Kashmir. Things start to heat up as we run through Morocco then rock climb in the South Pacific. A brilliant night of adventure.

Time: 8.00pm to 11.00pm (live music and doors open at 7.00pm) Venue: Queenstown Memorial Centre Cost: $30 (online), $35 (at the door)

7.00pm – doors open, view the trade show and enjoy some live music.

8.00pm – Ascending Women by Lynn Hill, USA. Lynn changed the definition of what is possible in rock climbing. From her first free ascent of the most famous big wall climb in the world, the 1000m high El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, she evolved from a pioneer, to an icon, to a living legend. ‘Ascending Women’ is the story of her life as a pioneer in what was once a male-dominated community: the sport of rock climbing. Lynn will take us on a journey to Yosemite, Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Morocco, Australia, Madagascar and South America.

INTERMISSION Try a glass of locally-made Maori Point wine from the café

ICEolation (29 mins), Directors: Sophie Ballagh and Ewan Blyth, NZ. Two people, two weeks, two kayaks. A journey beyond wilderness, via sea kayak, to connect with a land of ice and penguins. Two paddlers with adventurous spirits undertake a self-supported sea kayak expedition in Antarctica.

Cerro Kishtwar – An Ice Cold Story (30 min), Director: Julian Zanker, Germany, subtitles. The ban on climbing in the Kashmir mountains was lifted, so three alpinists set off to attempt an unclimbed face. But the difficulties were greater than expected and they encountered hard technical climbing at high altitude. Let’s just say things didn’t go exactly according to plan.

INTERMISSION

Aziza (7 mins), Director: Matt Pycroft, UK. The call to prayer is a familiar sound in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Five times a day the minaret sounds, and people from all across the Moroccan valleys pause to say their prayers. Aziza Raji still manages to find time to be one of the rising stars of Moroccan ultra-running.

Pacific Lines (24 mins), Director: Simon Waterhouse & Brett Williams, Australia. A story of cultural identity and rock climbing exploration as we follow 14-year-old Angie Scarth-Johnson on an adventure to a remote and rugged island in the South Pacific.

FREE Avalanche & Backcountry Tours Talk. Starts at 6.00pm. See page 7.

Snow Show Don’t miss the Snow Show! The steep, steep faces, fast turns, sick pow and ridiculous lines of these adventure films will inspire dreams of far-off places to visit. We go off the beaten track to ski Pakistan, and we traverse the Southern Alps. In the Best Snow Sports film we hit the French Alps to taste some of the most dangerous skiing on the planet. We go big, we go hard and we go to China; then we explore a couloir in the Routeburn Valley. Get ready for winter with this smorgasbord of skiing and snowboarding treats including three locally made films.

Time: 8.00pm to 11.00pm (live music from 7.30pm) Venue: Queenstown Memorial Centre Cost: $25, youth discount $5

A Winter Affair (26 mins), Producer: Janina Kuzma, NZ. Janina Kuzma and Anna Smoothy cross NZ’s Southern Alps from East to West, starting in the Liebigs. They are confronted with challenging terrain and fast-changing weather conditions.

Between the lines - Entre les lignes (28 mins), Directors: Pierre Cadot and Thomas Guerrin, France, subtitles. Classic French extreme skiing in the heart of the Alps, exploring the nooks and crannies of an already well-run mountain in order to continue finding new, steep (very steep) lines.

INTERMISSION Try a glass of locally-made Maori Point wine from the café

Zabardast (54 mins), Director: Jérôme Tanon, France, some subtitles. The intimate travel diary of an incredible expedition into the heart of Pakistan’s Karakoram range, and the search for one of the most beautiful mountains to ski on the planet, standing at 5880m. A meeting point of skiing, snowboarding and mountaineering in a true hard-core adventure.

INTERMISSION Try an Altitude beer from the café

Altay Wild Snow (28 mins), Director: Li Shuang, China, subtitles. The little town of Hemu in Xinjiang is “the birthplace of the world’s ski history.” Top skier Maliqin is electrifying as he flies down Mt. Makit, and the traditional fur ski-making scene is awe-inspiring.

Upland Dreams (12 mins), Director: Ross Mackay, NZ. Josh Clark and Jono Carr stumble upon an unlikely find in a cave while hunting in the North Routeburn Valley. It just so happens that one of NZ’s premier backcountry couloirs is directly across the valley from the cave. Josh comes back after 17 years to attempt the descent and complete his part of this cool little story.

We finish the evening with two short films; Into The Storm, Director: Mike Handford, NZ; and The Abbey, Director: Frank Pickell.

Fine Lines (98 mins), Director: Dina Khreino, Hong Kong. What could compel us to abandon our most basic instinct for self-preservation? It’s not about adrenaline or thrill seeking; there is something far deeper that drives the world’s most elite group of mountain adventurers to take life-threatening risks. In this rarefied air, these athletes are fundamentally changed, not just as climbers, but as human beings.

Premiere Guest Speaker Event We welcome to the stage Wanaka legend and world champion, Annabel Anderson. When it comes to global dominance, this lady is on-point. Annabel is tough, driven and inspiring. Then we go remote and head to the End of the Earth on this EPIC journey following festival alumnus Leo Houlding and Wanaka local Mark Sedon as they kite-ski 2,000km to climb the Spectre Mountain in Antarctica. The evening concludes with incredible women doing interesting things; freedive with a Kiwi champion and Queenstown local, Kathryn Nevatt; then follow two women in Iceland as they inspire a life of adventure. An evening not to be missed!

Time: 8.00pm to 11.00pm (live music from 7.30pm) Venue: Queenstown Memorial Centre Cost: $25 (online), $30 (at the door), youth discount $5

8.00pm - Talk by Annabel Anderson (Wanaka). Annabel has won multiple world titles, has held the World #1 ranking for stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) for 6 years in a row and is regarded as being the most dominant athlete in her sport. Whether enduring a self-imposed mega-endurance training session, aka “an adventure” (Annabel has a penchant for multi-hour suffer-fest-style bike rides before breakfast) or an unintended heli-evac from the Wanaka back-bowls, this multi-sport-loving human spends more than her fair share of time in the hurt locker perfecting the art of Type 2 fun. Annabel will be speaking at the festival about the highs and lows of a life in high-performance sport.

INTERMISSION Try a bottle of locally-made Altitude beer

Perspectives, 6 mins, Director: Scott Secco, USA.

Spectre Expedition - To the End of the Earth (49 mins), Directors: Alastair Lee and Leo Houlding, UK. 2,000 kilometres, 200kg each, 65 days, 3 mates, 1 mountain. Unsupported, using snow-kites to travel great distance, with massive loads and at speeds up to 60 kph, this is the epic tale of Mark Sedon (NZ), Leo Houlding (UK) and Jean Burgun’s (France) daring dream to reach the summit of the most remote mountain on Earth; The Spectre, Antarctica.

INTERMISSION Try a glass of locally-made Maori Point wine from the café

The Breath Connection (15 mins), Director: Aliscia Young, NZ. A portrait of Queenstown freediver Kathryn Nevatt, former World Champion and current New Zealand record holder in all freediving disciplines. Filmed through the distinctive Central Otago seasons, the film reflects Kathryn’s philosophy and gives insight into the mind of a freediver.

A Land Shaped by Women (26 mins), Director: Anne-Flore Marxer, USA. Empowering women and bringing a feminine narrative to outdoor pursuits. Gender equality has a long history and a special status in Iceland. As professional snowboarders who’ve fought hard for gender parity in a male-dominated sport throughout their careers, Anne-Flore and Aline wanted to dig deeper into Icelandic women’s mindsets while combining it with their love for the mountains and the waves.
