President’s Annual Report
I would like to begin my report by thanking all the members who have been working hard
for the society be it as exhibitors, stewards, liaison officers, milk testers, or committee
members. Your hours preparing goats/trophies/signs/paperwork, and fulfilling your rolls
doesn't go un-noticed. Our branch is growing each month with new applications being
approved so the promotion of dairy goats is working. Also it is wonderful to have some of
the new members getting involved with showing and assisting with promotional and
events.
Over the past year we have had fairly consistent numbers of entries at shows which are
greater than preceding years indicating a resurgence in exhibitors interest and dedication. I
would like to reinforce the importance of vigilance by the chief stewards when engaging a
judge, making sure that they have a current working with children clearance as there has
been an issue with late renewals this year. Judges and volunteers please check your cards
for the expiry date and update when needed.
It is wonderful that Sandra Stewart was willing to take over the website when Scott moved
interstate. After some teething issues Sandra is getting on top of the work to bring the site
up to date.
Sam McKay has been very vigilant with the Facebook page which has over 200 members
now. This page was originally for advertising but has bloomed into a page for promoting
events and sharing ideas and asking for information on goat care. Please remember it is
not a venue to vent negative comments and bring the Society into disrepute.
In closing I would like to express how humbled I am with the recent expressions of support
and encouragement that l have received, and being nominated as the Branch Leader once
again. I will endeavour to fill the position of President dealing with issues transparently and
honestly.
Cheers Tricia

Federal Council 2018
The Tasmanian Branch hosted the Federal
Council Meeting this year in Hobart, at
Rydges Hotel which was an historic group
of buildings that were the “Deaf and
Dumb School” and was converted into
very comfortable rooms. The food was
very tasty, and the staff were very
obliging.
Graeme Hunter, Glenys Rogers and myself
represented the Queensland Committee
and Irene Hanmer was present also.
Unfortunately, the other elected Qld
Directors were not able to attend.
Much debate took place over the various
motions and the results will be published
in the AGW in the near future, but I can
confirm that the motion to remove 11f was
lost and that regulation still stands. This
means that stock can only be registered
with one society and not hold dual
registration with another entity.
At the dinner on Saturday night, the
various presentations included the 25-year
membership badge for Raewyn Bruce,
which will be presented to her at our
AGM.
Another long-term membership badge
was given to Jane and Keith Hewlett who
have been members for 55 years
now. Jane is a past Federal President and
still to this day is raising funds for the
Tasmanian Branch selling soap. That is
true dedication to the society.

× L Morley advised that the letter of thanks she received from the committee on the
work she had done with the RNA was taken like a slap in the face not because of
the wording but of the fact she was also informed that I Millett would take over this
roll in 2018 and she had not been asked to continue in this role. The President
explained that the committee was not aware she was still interested and if had been
aware would have let her carry on with that role as previously she had done an
excellent job.

DROUGHT FEEDING OF GOATS Information taken from Agfact A7.5.3
The effects of drought on sheep and goats enterprises using pasture are similar, but
it is only rarely that conditions deteriorate to the stage where no grazing is available.
Most commonly, goats need a ration to supplement limited grazing. Feed supply is
critically when dry pasture is short [less than 2cm], and when less than one tonne
per hectare of dry matter is available. Under such conditions goats lose bodyweight
and condition, and may exhibit “blacklips” from grazing at soil level.
On properties where there are scrub and other browse species, the effect of the
drought on goats and stocking rates occurs much later, and management decisions
are more difficult. It is advisable to monitor your goat’s bodyweight and condition
score.
YOU MUST PREPARE FOR DROUGHT
For drought strategies to be successful, they need to be flexible. They need to be
capable of being implemented at short notice and varied according to the severity
and duration of the drought. You can choose some or all of the following options.
You can:
1. Sell all your stock;
2. Cull and sell some stock;
3. Find agistment for your stock;
4. Start feeding the stock on your property.
Before deciding what to do, calculate your costs and returns. A combination of
strategies could be your best option.
After carefully costing the economics of a feeding program and deciding to take the
drought feeding option, you must then decide on what level of feeding is required.
There are three basic levels of feeding – supplementary, survival and production.
SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING is when goats are fed to overcome a deficiency in
the fodder that is already available to them. An example would be where goats
Queensland Branch Newsletter July 2018 Page 26
receive a supplement of lupins when grazing a dry grass stand to overcome a
protein deficiency in their diet.
SURVIVAL FEEDING is when a minimum amount is fed with little or no other
paddock feed available until the drought breaks. While feeding levels are not fully
established in goats, extrapolation from sheep research is a simple exercise that
allows costing of a full programme.
PRODUCTION FEEDING during drought can be profitable and two avenues worth
exploring are:
A] LOT FEEDING. Kids and adults in poor condition have little value during drought,
but well finished stock of slaughter weight should realise higher prices. If appropriate
facilities are available, lot feeding may be an alternative way to reduce numbers,
grazing pressure and total feeding costs.
When calculating the profitability of lot feeding, compare the total feeding cost with
estimated improvement in animal value on a live basis
B] FEEDING FOR INCREASED REPRODUCTION RATE When there are good
prospects of the drought breaking at or before the next kidding, consider feeding
does to increase body weight and improve kid weaning percentages.
to be continued…
Hi Members
My apologies for only a few show photos in this issue.
Very few were sent to me. I have managed to
chase up a few but not in time to be able to
put them in this News.
So, the September News will be very colourful.
