seniors policyLabor Opposition Leader Shayne Sutton has

been caught out this morning trying to claim credit for the Can Do teams plan to make footpaths safer for Brisbanes senior citizens.

Council will today unveil its new Draft Seniors Strategy 2011-16, which includes a plan to make footpaths wider around senior centres and other areas frequented by over 60s.

The Can Do team has been developing t h e s t r a t e g y s i n c e 2 0 0 9 f o l l o w i n g a recommendation from the Lord Mayors initial Taskforce into Retirement and Aged Care.

However Cr Sutton this morning tried to boldly claim the idea for wider footpaths had been lifted from Labors general footpath policy, despite it only being released a few months ago.

Infrastructure Chairman Margaret de Wit said this was not the first time Labor had tried to claim credit for the Can Do teams ideas in the

lead up to next years election. Earlier in the year we saw Cr Sutton trying

to say Lord Mayor Graham Quirks bold plan to build all-abilities playgrounds in every Council ward was actually Labors idea, and now this, she said.

Clearly Labor think these are great policies if theyre trying to claim them as their own, but it also shows they are a policy-free zone when it comes to making Brisbane more accessible and inclusive for seniors and people with disabilities.

Cr de Wit said it was also brave of Cr Sutton to be sticking by Labors ill-fated footpath policy, which had already blown out by $50 million.

Earlier in the year we saw Labor trying to claim they would widen enough footpaths to stretch between Brisbane to Rockhampton for just $70 million, only for their costings to be exposed days later as really totalling at least $120 million*, Cr de Wit said.

I certainly couldnt see why anyone would want to l ift Labor s footpath policy and inherit the $50 million blowout in the cost of implementing it. That would be poor and reckless fi nancial management.

Widening footpaths for seniors is one of nine new initiatives proposed in Councils Draft Seniors Strategy 2011-16 and is part of Lord Mayor Graham Quirks plan to make Brisbane a more accessible and inclusive city.

In recent years the Can Do team has also undertaken other measures to improve the lives of Brisbanes seniors, including the Lord Mayors Aged Care Taskforce, which looked at improving ways people could retire without feeling isolated from their local communities and family.

The Can Do team also ensured pensioners continued to get a 40 per cent subsidy on the price of their water bill when the State Government took direct control of water off Councils.
