SO WHO ARE THESE

STUDENT OFFICERS WE HEAR SO

MUCH ABOUT?Hi folks,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Queen’s University Belfast. I am originally from Downpatrick, Co. Down and have been active at Queen’s over the past three years by being involved in clubs and societies and the Students’ Union. Once you register at Queen’s University, you automatically become a member of YOUR Students’ Union. We are here to make a difference and to provide you with a voice that will be heard by both the University and external bodies.

As your President, it is my duty to represent your interests to the University, government and the local community. The past decade has witnessed the most radical changes in higher education and the Students’ Union has changed the way that it works in order to meet these needs. Whilst providing high quality support, advice and representation for the entire student membership, we also remain at the centre of your social and cultural life. Our support is wide-ranging, catering for those students facing financial, academic or personal difficulties.

Most importantly, we provide a voice for you, our students. We currently have seven full-time student officers who are here to support you. Of crucial importance to us is the quality of life that is experienced at this University and we play a critical role in what we call the “Queen’s Experience”.

I cannot stress enough, the importance of being aware and becoming involved in the many services available for you on campus. University is often described as ‘the best days of your life.’ I would strongly suggest that, rather, University life is what you make it. It is important to have a good academic / social balance and it was through engaging with the Students’ Union and the support available at the University that I was able to strike an appropriate balance. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Queen’s because I seized every opportunity – I would encourage you to do the same.

If there is ever anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to contact me. My door is always open (if I’m not at a meeting) and I will always get back to you at the earliest possible opportunity. Enjoy your time at Queen’s and one final thought – if you ain’t in, you can’t win, so get involved!

Regards,

Gareth McGreevy Student President e: [email protected] t: 028 9097 1008

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT...

So, you might have noticed seven vaguely familiar faces cropping up in this publication; you might even have seen them arrayed in a ‘hall of fame’ style on the wall to the left of reception.

You might even have seen one of them up a lamp post in South Belfast or in the Rose of Tralee earlier this year! BUT... who are they? What are they for?

Your trusty Handbook is about to tell you all you need to know...

We are your Students’ Union officers for this year, also referred to as the President and the Vice Presidents (VPs) or, more formally, as sabbatical officers or ‘sabbs’. We are not Queen’s University staff members: we are elected students, free to do what it takes to serve our student population. We take a year out to work full time representing and supporting students, within Queen’s, the local community, Stormont and even as far as Westminster.

We want to be out and about, finding out what you want and what you have to say. So, don’t be afraid to stop and talk to us. Come up to our offices on the second floor, or just breeze in for a wee cup of tea.

As a representative body, this Union thrives on the commitment, interests and actions of its members! Any trouble, problem or issue you think is relevant come up and see us and we will do our very, very best to help!

Best Student Experience: I was involved in Queen’s Law Society, resulting in being awarded a National Student Media Award!

EVERY SINGlE PENNY YOU SPEND IN ThE STUDENTS’ UNION GOES BACk INTO OUR SERVICES fOR YOU.

As the VP Education I am responsible for taking a lead on educational issues, lobbying for better educational welfare and working with the Students’ Union Advice Centre on

representative case work for students.

So don’t hesitate to get in contact with me if you are having problems with your course or study (e.g. progress, plagiarism,

appeal or disciplinary committees), changing course, problems with academic staff, SSCC issues or if you just want to get involved in educational campaigns e.g. fighting fees.

My role is to make sure you know what’s going on around campus and further afield, by making sure we send the right message to and from students. This year, the SU is embarking on a new

publication, SU Monthly, letting you know the ins and outs of what is going on in and around Queen’s. Also, look out for our campaigns, making sure the general public, MLAs and MPs realise that students are

active intellectuals not idly bowing down to the concept of raising the cap on fees! I say, “not on my watch!” Remember, if we can make our voices heard, the sky’s the limit!

My role involves advising, representing and campaigning for students on areas from accommodation problems to money issues, health issues to

student parents and childcare. The remit is very wide, so it’s hard to get it all down in a paragraph! Chances are that if it’s non-academic, and not to do with

a club or society, it’s a welfare issue.

If you have any problems at all please get in contact – I work for you!

help them run events for their members, and help resolve any problems that students may have with a club or society.

If you want to get more out of your time at Queen’s then I’d suggest joining

up and giving it a go – from Skydiving to Caving, Drama to Dragonslaying, we’ve got something for almost everyone. If we haven’t, then you could always start your own... ask me how!

Hi all! I’m Sam, the VP Equality & Diversity for the SU this year. Basically, I’m here to help underrepresented student groups which involve international/ postgraduate/ mature/ part time/ LGBT

etc groups. I don’t have a specific ‘best student experience’, but I have to say, as an international student, the past three years have been a whole whirlwind of experiences! I’m here

to help out with any problem you may have at all, so if you have any questions/problems just let me know and I’ll try my hardest to help you!

Best Student Experience: I don’t have a specific

‘best student experience’, but I have to say that, as

an international student, the past three years have

been a whole whirlwind of experiences!

Community is a dual role of helping to build up a vibrant student community, whilst also representing students to external communities. I’m going to be focusing

on holding events on weekends, building upon the volunteering experience and work with RAG - the Students’ Union’s Charity - to help raise lots of money in fun

ways (fancy dress, nights out, abseiling, hitchhiking and more)!

My one piece of advice is to get involved and have fun!

Best Student Experience: My three years in

RAG – awesome people, awesome events! Every

year it gets better and better, and this year certainly

won’t be an exception to that rule!

You’re young, you’re free but you’re not invincible. You are now statistically vulnerable in terms of house fi res. Take the time to fi reproof your life. We know you have a lot on your plate, but by taking a few minutes now you could save your life... and the lives of others.

Please read carefullyFlashpoints – the major causes of house fi res:1. Unattended chip pans and grill pans2. Cigarettes, matches and other smoking

materials3. Misuse of electricity (overloaded plugs,

appliances left on etc.)4. CandlesBe aware of these dangers, especially after a late night.

Fit a smoke alarmSmoke alarms are only around £5 and are easy to fi t, so it’s not worth taking the risk for the cost of a couple of pints. Get a smoke alarm fi tted and ensure you test it every week. Change the battery when required.

Know how to get outIf fi re breaks out, it’s possible that your usual entry and exit routes will be blocked. Think about alternative ways out and make sure that they are not obstructed.Get out! Get the Fire Brigade out! Stay out!

Bedtime routineMake it routine. Most fi res start at night, when you’re asleep. Before going to bed, take a minute to follow these lifesaving steps:1. Turn off all electrical appliances not

designed to stay switched on2. Put a guard in front of open fi res3. Put out all cigarettes and empty ashtrays,

after making sure contents are cool4. Extinguish candles5. Close all internal doorsYou’re not fi reproof. Please follow the simple advice above... it could well save your life.

When most people hear about student politics they may be inclined to switch off. ‘Council?! Meh, what use is it?’

In Queen’s Students’ Union this is certainly

not the case and we urge every student to get in involved. The more our students raise their concerns, the more (lobbying) power we have within

the University and even parliament.

So, in short, here’s how it works, with a few brief examples below.

DEMOCRACY DON’T DISS IT!

IMPORTANT DEMOCRATIC DATES

Referendum

Union General Meeting (UGM)

Student Council

Students Officers

Student Body

A simple ‘YES’ or ‘NO’ vote on specific statement. Any policy passed here takes precedence over a UGM or Council and binds the SU and its officers. All QUB students’ are entitled to vote.

Council is a good way to bring issues to the SU’s attention. It is a monthly meeting which deals with key issues facing the SU. The Council is elected every October, with 100 elected students representing subject and faculty constituencies

The Student Officers (aka sabbaticals) are elected by the student body in March of every year, and they are paid to run the SU on a day-to-day basis.

As the student members of the organisation, the students are the supreme governing body of the SU, through referendums, UGMs and Council As a member of the SU you have the right to take part in all democratic activities.

A public meeting open to all QUB students. Any motion passed here is also binding for the SU and its officers, provided enough students (0.5%) show up.

HOW IT WORKS IN THE UNION

That’s you!If you’re interested, you should run for Council, or at least vote on the 19 & 26 October on Queen’s Online!

Without exaggeration, these events determine the strategic outcome of the Students’ Union starting this academic

year. Even if your level of interest in the SU is very little, it is still important that you vote. After all,

everything we achieve is in the best interest of you, the student body.

STUDENT UNION Council ELECTIONS

Tuesday 19 Oct 2010 No matter what course you are undergoing, you will belong to one of 3 faculties: Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Engineering

& Physical Sciences, Medicine Health & Life Sciences. This election is ‘constituency based’ which means only students from the same faculty can vote for

you. For the purpose of Council Elections, Postgraduate Students’ can only vote for fellow Postgraduate Students regardless of their faculty.

Nominations for Council open Monday 27 September 2010

If your interested in becoming a candidate, call up to the Second Floor in the Students’ Union and request a nomination form. Alternatively, you can download one from www.qubsu.org. There are two elections for Council, with the successful candiates from both becoming the 100 student Councillors.

MOTION: A formal proposal for the Union take a certain action or position. e.g. These motions could range from the price you pay for your tea, to the price you pay for University.

ElECTIONS fOR fACUlTY BASED CONSTITUENCIES

ElECTIONS fOR OPEN CONSTITUENCIES

Tuesday 26 Oct 2010 This means that any QUB Student (undergraduate or postgraduate) can vote for you!

STUDENT OFFICER ELECTIONS

If you think you have what it takes to run the SU, then step

up & RUN in the SU Student Officer Elections 2011-2012.

Elections take place Tuesday 1 & Wednesday 2 March 2011.

CONSTITUTION: The rules governing the Students’Union - http://www.qubsu.org/about_constitution.asp

UNION: A Union isn’t a bad thing - don’t get confused by vague memories of history lessons about strikes. A Union is there to represent its members - that’s you!

SU POlICY: A principle or rule to guide decisions and achieve rational outcome(s). e.g. The Students’ Union’s Fairtrade Policy – to encourage ethical trading within the Union.

NATIONALSTUDENTMOVEMENT •Registering as many students as

possible in targeted constituencies ahead of the March Assembly and Local Government elections. This will greatly enhance our political influence, and will require volunteer activists for effective grassroots organisation. I guarantee you will be hearing more about this.

This Year We Are:

•Organising days of action on every university campus and lobbying on your behalf at Stormont for a positive outcome from the recent review in to university funding. We are confident that this process handled effectively, could result in a revolutionary change (for the better) in fees and finance. We have a duty to future students, not just ourselves, to campaign for a fairer system, and the facts are on our side. All we need are the campaigning numbers to back the direct lobbying of our student officers.

•Working in partnership with local trade unions to limit looming spending cuts: protecting jobs, welfare and value for money on courses while fighting the Tory savaging of the public sector!

If you are interested, and would like to get involved, please email me at [email protected], or visit our (admittedly, messy) website, www.nistudents.org.

The National Union of Students - Union of Students In Ireland (NUS-USI) is the national students representation body with over 220,000 members in both higher and further education in Northern Ireland. This year, the NUS-USI is embarking on an ambitious series of campaigns that will require your help.

Politicians, civil servants and administrators are making daily decisions

My name is David Bradley, and I am the Clubs & Societies Coordinator. I am here to support Niall in his work - but I am also here to help you! If you need direct assistance running any kind of event, please get in [email protected]

Queen’s University is proud to support well over 100 sports clubs and societies catering for over 7,000 members. Whether it’s competing at the highest level in your chosen sport or enjoying your hobby with like-minded friends, you should find that Queen’s University has everything you’ll need. If it doesn’t, then why not set up your own sports club or society? All you need are 15 fellow students, a chat with the VPCS and a wee bit of paperwork (don’t panic!) and you could be on your way.

The staff and sabbatical officers are on hand to help students reach their sporting potential, enjoy recreational sports or enjoy their hobby in a safe friendly environment supported by annual grants and funding to help you along the way.

But it’s not all just fun and games! These days, graduate employers will always be looking for more than just a degree. They will look at your management skills, practical experience and extracurricular activities. To help you out with this, Queen’s University now offers

student office bearers the opportunity to sign up for ‘Degree Plus’. This gives you some recognition for the work that you put into running a club or society, enabling you to provide a record of achievement to employers and gain an extra certification at graduation for your efforts.

So if you are interested in joining a club or society, come along to the Freshers’ Bazaar this year (Wednesday 29 September 2010, Students’ Union Building) .

Currently there are around 50 sports clubs offering students competitive and recreational opportunities, training at Queen’s Sport Physical Education Centre (PEC), newly redeveloped Malone Playing Fields or more exotic locations. Whether you want to test yourself at elite level by joining Queen’s Rugby All Ireland

League Team, Gaelic Football Sigerson Cup squad, Hockey teams or Queen’s Rowing Clubs or if you prefer a less traditional sport such as trampoline, orienteering or mountain climbing – each club will cater for your ability. Queen’s prides itself on not only boasting some of the best teams and athletes in the country, but also being able to

provide competitive sports opportunities for students of all age ranges and abilities.

Queen’s continues to recognise and support our top athletes; through the GAA, Rugby, Rowing and Soccer, students are offered assistance through sports science, free use of facilities, financial assistance and free sports clothing.

One huge perk of being in a club or society is that all Club Rooms and Bars are free of charge to

hire in the Students’ Union!

SPORTS CLUBS

SOCIETIES

Details of all clubs & societies can be found at www.qubsu.org/clubs.asp

At present there are nearly 100 active societies at Queen’s, providing students with the opportunities to improve their own education or to progress or even take up a new hobby.

Some societies such as Law, Scrubs, Polysoc and Pharmacy offer students opportunities to learn more about their chosen field through conferences and guest speakers. Other societies such as SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) and SWOT (Students Working Overseas Trust) offer students volunteering and placement opportunities.

Some societies offer those of a similar political outlook the opportunity to meet, discuss and campaign together. Or, if it’s a talent or hobby that you wish to progress then why not check out the Dance, Juggling, or Dragonslayers Societies.

The annual Students’ Union Awards give the University and SU a chance to recognise and reward societies for their hard work and endeavour, and showcase the talents of those individual students that volunteer to deliver positive student experiences and promote their Students’ Union.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES

Clubs and societies offer a staggering range of experiences that you just won’t find anywhere else – or at least not at student prices! I’m also here to help clubs and societies promote and run events, produce cool hoodies for members, and keep themselves organised. I hope you have a blast with any group you join, but if you have any problems then bring them to me.

YOURCAMPAIGNS?

I cannot stress enough how important campaigning is. Some

people say what’s the point? But that’s exactly it – we are making a

point. So join me in making 2010/11 the year students made their

point and stood up for what they believed in! I say, enough talking

and complaining let’s show our discontent and unite together to

represent all students!

fiona kidd Vice President Campaigns & Communications

t: 028 9097 1068 e: [email protected]

So yeah... why campaign?Firstly, what is your impression of the word campaigning? Do you think of Martin Luther King, do you think of striking, demonstrating, or protesting? Do you think that it’s fighting

for what you believe in? In QUBSU, it is going above and beyond to make sure that our students’ voices are heard.

This year, I am going out of my way to

create a buzz around campaigns, but in order to do this I need you, the student, to get involved too.

If you’re interested in running your own campaign, contact me!

Would you value your degree at £30,000? We wouldn’t! We are going to fight the raising of the cap on student fees. But we need your help. Join us in the fight against fees as we campaign for your right to an affordable education. To make a stand, contact me at [email protected].

PTQ 2011

SU MONTHLY

And what, I hear you mumble to yourself, is Q-SUM? It’s an acronym that stands for ‘Queen’s Students’ Union Media’; essentially an umbrella for any societies or

groups running with support from the Union.

These include PTQ, Queen’s Radio, SU Monthly and the newly formed SUTV. Q-SUM provides much required

support for these groups throughout the year, ensuring that they are as high a standard of media as possible.

New for the 2010/11, the Students’ Union will be producing a monthly publication containing news from in and around campus,

student issues, clubs and societies, interviews and plenty more. Keep an eye out for the PTQ Column - it’ll have the whole campus talking!

The recently announced SUTV has been given approval by the Union for the opening of a state of the art production studio, where students will

have the opportunity to meet, storyboard ideas and begin shooting with some very high-tech (and expensive) equipment. Having done that, there will be

more editing software than you could shake with a Fresher stick. A fantastic opportunity for anybody interested in a career in filming.

Queen’s Radio has its roots in a radio club set up in 1953, but 2001 saw a dramatic overhaul in its structure. Today, QR is one of the foremost entirely student run radio stations in the UK and Ireland. If offers an enormous opportunity

for students interested in a career in media and an even greater chance at being a part of one of the most dynamic societies at Queen’s. QR is a radio station; and it is a society. If you happen to join, there’s a staggering amount of things to

do; from presenting, news reading and producing, to managing events, joining the tech team or helping with promotion.

Where to begin with PTQ? On the surface, PTQ is quite simply a joke book, filled with the kind of stuff only Queen’s students should appreciate and a pleasant ‘new book’ smell. It is however, so much more. Most importantly it is a fundraiser for one of Queen’s most important

societies ‘RAG’ – a society entirely dedicated to raising funds for charity and having fun. Chances are it’ll be polically incorrect, morally questionable, likely to offend, but as long as you don’t take it too seriously and remember that it’s all for charity you’ll definitely enjoy it.

The Gown is a free, fortnightly student newspaper at Queen’s University Belfast. The paper is funded independently through advertising and run entirely by students. Founded in March 1955, the newspaper aims to hold the University and its Students’ Union accountable to the students of Queen’s. Among its distinguished

past contributors are former Irish Times foreign correspondent Conor O’Clery, the Irish Independent’s Brendan Keenan and Liam McAuley, and the BBC’s Nick Ross, Mark Carruthers and Maggie Taggart. There are many ways in which students can become involved in The Gown, from writing articles to photography and design.

Be SaFeWe want you to go out and have a good time, but we want you to be safe as well! You’ve heard it all before but it’s good advice, it’s important to remember that being out alone can be dangerous. It seems obvious, but there really is safety in numbers. Never walk home alone. Take a taxi if you need to. Keep on main roads and well-lit streets; avoid dimly-lit areas. If you think you are being followed, go to a busy area and seek assistance.

Free personal safety alarms are available from the sabbatical office in the SU, so please come and take one!

heaLThDrinking... kebabs... occasionally dodgy houses...very little sleep... it’s pretty inevitable you’re going to get ill at some point! Luckily the University Health Centre, based on Lennoxvale off the Malone Road (two streets up from the David Keir Building), is available for when you’re feeling poorly. You should definitely register with them and it’s free if you’re a student!

I hope you get as much out of being a Queen’s student as

you possibly can, but no matter what problems you encounter

along the way, you don’t have to face them alone! The

Enterprise SU hosts the annual Headstart programme – an enterprising programme designed to develop your creative thinking and business skills. Working in cross disciplinary teams, you will develop viable business ideas and plans, the best of which will be entered into a wide range of student business competitions.

This program is available to all Queen’s undergraduate students from any discipline. You do not need to have any experience in business to participate in this programme. To register interest or enquire about the programme contact [email protected].

Enterprise SU also hosts a business idea competition for all students. Lots of categories and lots of cash prizes make this competition incredibly popular with over 300 entries last year. If you’ve got an idea that you really think could be successful, then look out for details about the competition in the Enterprise SU.

Enterprise SU is your space; if you have an idea for an event or showcase and want to promote it to the rest of the student body, then why not book the room? Previous events have ranged from an international food festival to a clothes swapping event. This space is available to individual students as well as clubs and societies so if you are interested in using the space then get in touch – [email protected].

Your Students Union is dedicated to you. Committed to making you more employable; committed to nurturing your entrepreneurial skills; committed to providing you with opportunities to volunteer and committed to helping you get the most from your time at Queen’s.

So it’s March of your 3rd year, and you are on the hunt for a graduate job. You’ve drafted your CV and filled in the job application form for that job you have been dreaming of. You get an interview. First question, what have you done in university, outside your studies, to develop your skills? Tell

me about a time you showed leadership…or creativity… or entrepreneurship?

Enterprise SU is a facility to enable students to develop their skills in a way that is both effective in developing your future career and meaningful to the community. Enterprise SU is located on the ground floor at the entrance to the Students’ Union. This area provides a relaxed atmosphere to promote a range of extracurricular opportunities to students via our plasma screens, noticeboard and leaflet holders.

From internships to competitions, volunteering

opportunities to graduate schemes. Regular information sessions, seminars and workshops are hosted on everything from postgraduate courses to the best way to make an impression in an interview. Enterprise SU is a facility dedicated to ensuring you get the most from your time at Queen’s. You can find out more about Enterprise SU activities by keeping an eye on the plasma screens and on the SU website – you can also email [email protected] with your details and we’ll keep you informed about various activities throughout the year.

Welcome to your new home in Belfast! Here are a few hints and tips to make your time as fun (and as smooth) as possible!

» Introduce yourself to your Neighbours. Offer them a cup of tea and say hi!

» If your neighbours know you then they are more likely to help keep your

place safe, and probably less likely to call the police if you have a party!

» If you’re going to have a party, tell your neighbours in advance. Again, it will be less likely that they complain.

» Try to keep your front garden tidy and don’t litter on the streets.

» Find out your bin collection day!

» To get bulky rubbish removed, call 028 9027 0230

» Recycle! Go on – it’s good for the environment!

» Why not get involved and volunteer some of your time back into the community?

Students at Queen’s come from a myriad of different religious backgrounds. South Belfast is home to a number of chaplaincies, which provide support to their followers.

There are also four main chaplaincy centres on Elmwood Avenue (conveniently located next to the Union!). These are the Presbyterian Community Centre,

the Church of Ireland Centre, the Methodist Chaplaincy, and the Catholic Chaplaincy.

Each one of these has a full time chaplain and staff who are more than willing to help you out if you need anything at anytime!!!

Most of them run cafes that serve hot food and beverages at lunchtime which are definitely worth a visit!

Queen's is getting more diverse with an increased intake of international students every year. This is an amazing opportunity for us to see a little bit of the world through

the eyes of our international friends - we are holding a series of World Days to celebrate this. This will be a collection of events during religious and cultural

festivals of the many international student groups at Queen's. World Days will involve Thanksgiving, Diwali, Chinese New Year, and so much more.

Welcome to the new International and Postgraduate Student Centre (IPSC)!! The former Seamus Heaney Library has been refurbished into a three-storey facility dedicated to international and postgrad students, which aims to provide a comprehensive support service together with the Student Guidance Centre and the Student's Union.

The International Support Centre is

located on the ground floor and it's your one-stop shop if you're an international student looking for support, guidance, or advice. The first floor houses the Postgraduate Student Centre, where there will be an extensive range of workshops, courses, and even social events held during the academic year. And lastly, the second floor is a postgraduate only zone where the Computer Centre is located, with

colour printing, scanning, and photocopying facilities. This floor also houses the Postgraduate Student Association (PGSA), which aims to coordinate a number of research and social events throughout the year.

For more info on World Days, go to www.qubsu.org/vp-equality.asp

There are over 17 Chaplaincies located in and around Queen’s. Too many to list here!

Their contact details can be found in the directory at the back of this book!

The student body at Queen’s is made up of people from a whole range

of cultures and backgrounds and it’s important to remember that it

doesn’t matter whether you’re a mature, international, postgraduate,

or LGBT student- you deserve to have a great time at university! If

you’re from any minority student group and happen to face any issues

throughout your time at Queen’s, let me know! I’m here to listen and

help in any way possible.

For more information on making feedback work for you contact your personal tutor or visit http://www.qub.ac.uk/sgc/learning/feedback.

STaFF STUdenT conSULTaTiVe commiTTeeSSSCCs are QUB’s class representative system. Each school has at least one and every class should have at least one representative on their school SSCC. The SSCC is a way for you to have a say on your course and bring

forward problems and suggestions that the students have with modules.

Last year there was a major overhaul of the SSCCs in Queen’s and SSCCs now provide a stronger voice for students as they now will elect representatives onto the Student Council and

major committees in your school.

You should consider standing for the position of SSCC rep as it provides many opportunities for you to explain the problems and make suggestions on your course, also it helps your CV and allows accreditation for degree plus.

FeedBacK maTTeRSWhenever you undertake a piece of assessment, you can expect to receive feedback from your lecturer, tutor and sometimes other students.

Feedback matters as

it helps you to work out where you have gone wrong and also tells you when you are on the right track – this allows you to use feedback you have received to make your next assignment better than your last one.

Feedback can be

given on assignments, coursework and exams as well as your tutorial contributions and performance in practical classes. It can be directed to you or a wider group through written or oral comments or face to face discussion of your work.

RoUTineIf you want to do the best for your degree, a good routine is a must.

Sleeping-in and missing

classes can really make you fall behind and catching up can be very hard, especially if the lecturer does not place the notes

online. Missing class can also affect your degree progress if the attendance at class counts towards your degree e.g. tutorials.

FiRST gRade BLUeSPerhaps you are used to getting 80% and 90% in your essays in school and then when you come to university you find your essay grades plummet to 60%. Do not fret! This is normal!

Essays are marked differently at university and very often are marked harder. Only exceptionally good essays ever get over 80%.

If you have been disappointed with a result speak to your

tutor and ask them for feedback regarding how you could do better. Learning is a process.

Also, remember that a grade of 60-69% in an essay will still give you a 2:1.

miSSing cLaSS, coURSewoRK deadLineS & eXamSMissing deadlines, exams and class can affect your degree classification, so if you have a good reason,

ensure you seek an extension, repeat or otherwise. Sleeping in because of a night out generally does not constitute a good reason to miss class, exams or deadlines but there are a number of good reasons why

you may. If you have circumstances (medical or otherwise) let the staff in charge know immediately. The University has a duty of care to its students and has a lot of support for you.

pLagiaRiSmPlagiarism is a serious academic offence. It can be defined as “the presentation of the work of others as the writer’s own without appropriate acknowledgement”. Ensure that you do not plagiarize because, in some cases, it can

result in expulsion from the University. In some cases poor referencing has resulted in people being accused of plagiarism. So make sure that the work you submit is your own and be careful to acknowledge all sources and reference them correctly.

No matter how much pressure you are under, do not plagiarize, because, if caught, the penalties are severe. If you are having problems with your essay seek guidance from your Advisor of Studies, Module Convener, Tutor or the Learning Development Service.
