The air is filled with light, fluffy snowflakes, the kind that cover the ground in a soft white blanket. Two young girls, still not used to the chill, excitedly walk out of their new home, dressed in brightly-coloured coats, snow pants and boots, their bright eyes glimmering from the narrow gap between their hats and scarves. It’s a typical Canadian scene in January. But for these girls and their family it is anything but typical. Only months ago the family was living in Jordan in a camp for refugees who had escaped the chaos in Syria. Their journey to Kingston, and safety, was started by their uncle, Yaser Al-Mtawa, a PhD student and researcher at the Queen’s School of Computing, and completed with the support of numerous community organi- zations and individuals. Two years ago, Mr. Al-Mtawa traveled to meet his brother and his family at the refugee camp. It was an experience he will never forget. Their home for three years was a tent and the conditions were deplorable, especially for a family with three young chil- dren. “They didn’t have anything, the basics – clean water, electric- ity, a decent place to live. Even the streets were like a desert,” he says. “It’s a miserable life.” It was a shock to see his loved ones, and so many others, in such dire conditions, one that would set him on the path of bringing them to Canada where they could be safe and start to re- build their lives. Back in Kingston, Mr. Al- Mtawa sought the support from the Islamic Society of Kingston and the Four Rivers Presbytery. After the first meeting with them, the Save a Family from Syria group was established. Later, the Queen’s community would become a powerful asset. The response was overwhelm- ing and as a result Save a Family from Syria has been able to spon- sor four families – including that of his brother and brother-in-law. Only months ago the familywas living in Jordan in a campfor refugees who had escapedthe chaos in Syria.

Principal Daniel Woolf an-nounced Benoit-Antoine Baconwill serve as Queen’s nextprovost and vice-principal (acad-emic). He will begin his five-yearterm on Aug. 1, succeeding AlanHarrison.

“I am delighted to welcomeDr. Bacon to Queen’s University.As an academic leader and re-searcher, he possesses the skillsand experience necessary to helpus build on the university’sachievements of the past severalyears and to enhance furtherQueen’s reputation for academicexcellence, which has been a cor-nerstone of this institution sinceits founding nearly 175 yearsago,” Principal Woolf says.“Benoit-Antoine is an accom-plished, enthusiastic and ener-getic administrator who bringsmany strengths to the job. I andthe other members of the senioradministrative team look forwardto working with him to advancethe university’s many prioritiesincluding our commitment toachieve and maintain financialsustainability.”

Dr. Bacon has held the posi-tion of provost and vice-presi-dent, academic affairs, at Concor-dia University since 2013. Prior tojoining Concordia, he served asthe dean of the Faculty of Artsand Science and associate vice-principal of research at Bishop’sUniversity.

“I am thrilled to be offered thisopportunity at one of Canada’sleading universities,” Dr. Baconsays. “There’s a real sense of ex-citement around Queen’s, with re-cent international achievementsand incredible support from the

tive responsibilities, Dr. Bacon hascontinued to conduct researchand teach in the field of cognitiveneuroscience. Dr. Bacon willassume a tenured appointment atthe rank of professor in Queen’sDepartment of Psychology effec-tive July 1.

Alan Harrison was appointedQueen’s provost and vice-princi-pal (academic) in 2011. He will re-tire from the position when histerm ends on July 31.

In her fifth year as the BellCanada Mental Health and Anti-Stigma Re-search Chair,Heather Stuartis encouragedby the progressshe and herteam have madin the emergingfield of re-search. How-ever, she knowsher work is far from over.

“This chair is the only chair inthe world that focuses on this par-

ticular area of research,” says Dr.Stuart. “It highlights a need forexpertise in an area that was com-pletely neglected before. Thechair has allowed us to buildbridges between the academicworld, media, programs, practi-tioners, people with mental ill-nesses, and their family members.However, as this chair is the onlyone of its kind in the world,there’s room for additional ex-pertise.”

The campaign to end stigmaaround mental illness will takecentre stage on Wednesday, Jan.27 during Bell Let’s Talk Day.

Dr. Stuart believes public out-reach events like this one and the

Bell Lecture on Mental Healthand Anti-Stigma are critical foradvancing the cause.

“We have made a huge impactand people are definitely talkingabout this,” says Dr. Stuart, whohas been a featured speaker at theBell lecture in previous years.“The people who participate inthese events are grateful we arerecognizing the stigma aroundmental health after it has been ig-nored for so many years. At theend of the talks, so many peoplelineup to meet me and the otherpresenters and talk about theirlives. We are validating their ex-periences in a way.”

In her own research, Dr. Stuart

is concentrating on intervention.Her goal is to create a tool kitthat’s accessible to everyoneacross Canada. To achieve thisgoal, she is focusing on findingcommunity partners and workingwith the Mental Health Commis-sion of Canada to develop bestpractices.

“Everyone wants to make adifference, but they need the re-sources to do a great job. It’s along term process, but I am look-ing forward to the day wheneveryone can work from the samedocument,” says Dr. Stuart.

An international research proj-ect based at Queen’s Universitythat is focused on developingnew clean energy technologieshas received a $4-million grantfrom Natural Sciences and Engi-neering Research Council ofCanada (NSERC).

The Engineered Nickel Cata-lysts for Electrochemical CleanEnergy (Ni Electro Can) researchteam, led by Queen’s researcherGregory Jerkiewicz (Chemistry),will use the NSERC DiscoveryFrontiers grant to develop thenext generation of nickel-basedmaterials, which will giveCanada’s energy sector a compet-itive advantage. The grant is onlygiven to one project once everytwo years.

“This project is an excellentexample of the impact thatQueen’s researchers are having inCanada and internationally,” saysDaniel Woolf Principal and Vice-Chancellor. “Our increasinglyglobalized world means it is im-portant to build connections andnetworks beyond our own bor-ders. Professor Jerkiewicz and hisinternational team are a prime ex-ample of how innovative, collab-orative projects remain at theleading edge of discovery.”

The research team aims to cre-ate affordable, alkaline fuel cellsfor the production of energy; de-velop new technologies for hy-drogen-based energy storage;and transform glycerol intovalue-added chemicals that willmake biodiesel productioncheaper and greener.

“Congratulations to Dr.Jerkiewicz and his team,” said theHonourable Kirsty Duncan, Min-ister of Science. “This DiscoveryFrontiers announcement is agreat example of the govern-ment’s commitment to fundamen-tal, discovery-driven researchthat addresses significant scien-tific problems and opens newhorizons. The Government ofCanada is committed to strength-

ening its support for fundamentalresearch that can create better to-morrows for Canadians.”

Currently, fuel cells employacidic electrolytes, which are ex-pensive because they requireplatinum catalysts. The Ni Elec-tro Can team is developing nickelmaterials that will be used in newalkaline fuel cell technologies,making them cheaper to build.The new nickel materials willalso find application in alkalinewater electrolyzers, thus makingthis technology more energy effi-cient. The new fuel cells and alka-line water electrolyzers will assistCanada in transitioning to the hy-drogen economy.

“Canada faces challenges asso-ciated with declining reserves ofnon-renewable energy sources,environmental pollution, green-house gas production and related

societal issues,” Dr. Jerkiewiczsays. “Building on Canada'sstrengths in the nickel, waterelectrolysis and fuel cell sectors,this project will lay the founda-tion for Canadian leadership inthe next generation of electro-chemical clean energy technolo-gies.”

Ni Electro Can includes 14Canadian researchers, seven uni-versities (University of Victoria,Simon Fraser University, INRSUniversité de Recherche, Univer-sity of Toronto, University of Ot-tawa and McMaster University),nine international researchersfrom seven countries, and a num-ber of industry partners.

Queen’s University is seekingcomment on its updated draft sex-ual violence policy, which hasbeen modified to align with therecently introduced provinciallegislation and policies at otheruniversities in Ontario.

“This policy will be a criticalcomponent in our continuingwork on sexual violence preven-tion and response,” says Provostand Vice-Principal (Academic)Alan Harrison. “It aligns withprovincial legislation, recommen-dations from the university’s Sex-ual Violence Prevention WorkingGroup, and best practices acrossthe sector.”

An implementation team,chaired by the provost, has beenin place since July, advancing theworking group’s recommenda-tions. The draft policy, and all sex-ual violence education and train-ing programs and initiatives thathave been implemented to date,have been developed with exten-sive student input and involve-ment.

Most recently, Queen’s an-nounced the creation of a dedi-cated Sexual Violence Preventionand Response Coordinator posi-tion. The coordinator will be acentral point of contact for stu-dents, staff and faculty and willlead campus-wide education, re-sponse, support, training and ad-vocacy activities. The universityhas also introduced new educa-tion programming for studentsduring Orientation Week, creatednew resources and training forstudents, staff and faculty, andworked to enhance the profile ofsexual violence support serviceson and off campus with a newposter and updates to the GreenFolder resource.

The draft sexual violence pol-icy articulates the university’scommitment to addressing sexualviolence and the comprehensivesupports that will be offered to in-dividuals who have experiencedsexual violence. It also outlinesthe university’s responsibilities re-lating to awareness, education,training, and reporting.

A group of third-year law stu-dents at Queen’s University havecome together to welcome Syrianrefugees to Kingston.

Jess Spindler, Rosa Stall, KaishaThompson and Lauren Wilsonhave created the Queen’s LawRefugee Support Program after re-ceiving training through theRefugee Sponsorship TrainingProgram. The Queen’s LawRefugee Support Program is al-ready offering assistance to Peter(his name has been changed bythe Queen’s Law Refugee SupportProgram to protect his identity), a26-year-old who fled the deadlycivil war in Syria.

“We are now working to helphim deal with the realities of livingin Kingston,” says Ms. Spindler.“That includes shopping for gro-ceries, banking, getting a job anddealing with the cold weather.”

Ms. Thompson says it’s helpfulthat they are the same age as Peterso they can help him through theloneliness.

“Cultural isolation is a definiteissue so we are trying to get Peterto meet with other Canadians andmembers of the Kingston commu-nity who speak his language, peo-ple who understand where he iscoming from,” she says.

Initially, the Queen’s group wasgoing to help with paperwork fornew refugees. With the federalgovernment assuming those du-ties, they are now focused on

fundraising and helping refugeesresettle in the community. Theyhave launched a Tilt campaignwhich is getting close to $1,500.William Flanagan, Dean, Queen’sLaw, has been a key supporter inthe students’ efforts and the pro-gram is supervised by Queen’sLaw professor Lisa Kerr.

“The campaign has been goingreally well,” says Ms. Wilson. “TheDean and the entire law schoolhave been very supportive.”

“We are here to help and that

means many different things,”says Ms. Stall. “We are preparedto assist with any tasks and wantto continue to reach out as morerefugees arrive in the future.”

Arriving on Boxing Day, Peterwas the first of three Syrianrefugees who have been formallysponsored by a group of Queen’sfaculty, staff and alumni to arrivein Kingston. This group is alsosponsoring a young couple whoarrived in Kingston on New Year’sEve. They are now taking full-

time English classes and hope tostart volunteer activities soon.They are currently living tem-porarily with Sandra den Otter,Associate Dean of Graduate Stud-ies.

“It has been a rewarding expe-rience, and we’ve been astoundedby the response from the Queen’scommunity and the Kingstoncommunity,” says Dr. den Otter.“There has been an overwhelmingresponse to this opportunity forus to share the work of resettle-

ment with newcomers fromSyria.”

Organizations like ISKA (Im-migrant Services Kingston and thearea), KEYS employment services,Queen’s Family Health Team, andothers have been extremely help-ful.

Along with Sandra den Otter,Queen’s professors MargaretMoore, Zsuzsa Csergo, ElizabethGoodyear-Grant, John McGarry inPolitical Studies, Henry Laycockand Alistair McLeod (Philosophy)and Queen’s alumna France Pelli-cano are supporting the couple, incollaboration with several com-munity members.

In addition to the law studentgroup, graduate students fromHistory, Political Studies, andComputing have been activelysupporting the newcomers. Dr.den Otter says providing supportfor refugees gives Queen’s stu-dents a unique experience.

“Assisting in the settlement ofnewcomers from Syria is such avaluable form of community en-gagement and global citizenshipfor graduate students,” Dr. denOtter says.

“We were really impressed bythe generosity of the communityhere in Kingston. We got manyemails, many contributions, manydonations, in-kind donations,” hesays. “At first it was really hard tocollect the $35,000 (for the spon-sorship). We thought ‘How canwe do it? It’s a big amount.’ But itwas amazing, the response fromthe community, so we decided togo ahead and sponsor the otherfamily after we finished the appli-cation for the first family. So be-fore even the first family arrivedhere we were able to collect themoney for the second family. Itwas a really great opportunity tostart with this cause.”

The response from the commu-nity includes donations of furni-ture and clothes. Once the fami-

lies arrive all that is needed is torent a living space.

His brother’s family has beenin Kingston for close to sixmonths and is settling in quitewell.

“Now they are happier. Theyhave a better future for their kids.They always say ‘We are more se-cure, we feel alive again,’ becausereally there was a lack of every-thing (in the camp),” he says. “InJordan there was no education fortheir kids, no health services.Nothing. They cannot even go outof the camp without applying forapproval. It’s a bad situation.Now they have more opportuni-ties for their kids.”

At five years old, Malak is theoldest of the family’s three girls –along with Maram, 3, and Rahaf,2. She is enrolled in seniorkindergarten and is doing well,

her uncle says.“She is really happy,” he says.

“When I visit them, she is alwaysbringing books and showing me.Now she is even correcting mypronunciation. She arrived justsix months ago and she is correct-ing my pronunciation. This isgreat.”

The families that are now inKingston are very appreciative for

all that has been done for them, inCanada and within the commu-nity.

There are more families arriv-ing in Kingston through other or-ganizations as well and Mr. Al-Mtawa is volunteering as much ashe can to help his compatriots. Hehas another brother whose familyhas been stuck at the Syria-Jordanborder for two months followinga perilous escape from the front-lines.

He is optimistic that authori-ties will allow the family to enterJordan soon. The next step thenwill be to bring them to Canada,safe from the barrel bombs andshelling.

“I am willing to work withanyone who is willing to help Syr-ian refugees to settle here,” hesays, adding that it has been a re-warding experience overall.

However, it has also been diffi-cult to watch his homeland con-tinue to be torn apart by a brutalcivil war. Five years on, with thedeath toll exceeding 350,000 andmore than half the populationdisplaced both internally and ex-ternally, Mr. Al-Mtawa can onlyhope that peace will return some-day.

“I am happy to see many countries like Canada that are willingor welcoming for the refugees,”he says. “However, my happinessis not complete because the war isstill there. We need to push all theparties involved to find some po-litical solution.”

Queen’s University School ofMedicine announced Tuesday,Jan. 19 that it will play a leadingrole in the Royal College of Physi-cians and Surgeons of Canada’sinitiative to transform specialtyeducation from a time-based sys-tem to a competency-based med-ical education system.

Under this new model, resi-dents are promoted once theyhave demonstrated competencyin a given field, rather than on aset timeline. As of July 2017, all in-coming Queen’s residents willstart their training using a compe-tency-based medical education(CBME) model, making Queen’sthe first medical program to com-plete the transition to the newmodel.

“One of the pillars of ourstrategic plan is to advance newways of training,” says Richard

Reznick, Dean of the Faculty ofHealth Sciences at Queen’s. “Assuch, the opportunity to help leadin a fundamental transformationof how we prepare the specialistsof the future, is not only exciting,but exactly what we said wewould do as part of our planningprocess.”

In addition to skills-based pro-motion, the CBME training modelalso calls for more frequent andmeaningful assessments, ensuringthat competent residents will

move through training in a moreindividualized and efficient man-ner, saving valuable resourcesand promoting excellence in theirpaths to independent practice.

“Queen’s institutional ap-proach captures the hearts andminds of our entire medicalschool by engaging all of our edu-cational leaders and faculty atonce,” explains Damon Dagnone,Faculty Lead for CBME atQueen’s. “We began working withour teaching hospitals on a cen-tralized approach over 18 monthsago, engaging our faculty, resi-dent trainees, the Royal College,patients and their families, andother Canadian medical schoolsalong the way. This is a journey ofdiscovery we are all taking to-gether.”

The Royal College mapped outa multi-year transition for all resi-dency programs in Canada in2014. However, in consultationwith the Royal College, Queen’s

University’s School of Medicinetook on a leadership role by de-signing and implementing a par-allel accelerated path to CBME,making a commitment that all in-coming Queen’s residents willstart their training using a CBME-based model by July 2017.

The university’s application toaccelerate the transition was ap-proved by the Royal College thispast November.

Al Orth, Associate Vice-Princi-pal (Human Resources), has de-cided to step down from his posi-tion due to health reasons. Mr.Orth will become a part-time spe-cial adviser on a project to designand implement a Jointly Spon-sored Pension Plan for Ontariouniversities.

“Al Orth is an accomplishedhuman resources professional whohas an extensive background inthe field. In the five years he waswith Human Resources, he led anumber of initiatives to strengthenand improve services based on therecommendations of a comprehen-sive review that was carried out in2010,” says Vice-Principal Davis. “Iwould like to thank Al for his con-tributions since joining Queen’s in2011, including the improvementshe has brought about in relationsbetween Queen’s and its unions. Iwish him a speedy return to goodhealth.”

Dan Bradshaw will be ap-pointed interim associate vice-principal (human resources) andDan McKeown will be appointedinterim associate vice-principal(faculty relations). Mr. Bradshawhas been the director of faculty re-lations, and subsequently associ-ate vice-principal (faculty rela-tions) since August 2009.

Learning outcomes have been a key partof my professional life in higher educationfor the past 25 years. I completed a degreein social work at McGill University wayback in the 1980s and haven’t been a socialworker for a very longtime. While I still can remember some content Ilearned (rememberingwhat I had for breakfastis enough of a challengethese days!), most en-during is the systemsthinking approach I wasexposed to in a numberof courses and outside-of-class experiences,as well as the importance of compassion,community and the impact of individualand societal empowerment. These out-comes of my undergraduate experience – inother words the knowledge, skills and atti-tudes imparted – have been useful in al-most every aspect of my life.

It took me many years to understandand intentionally use what I learned. Itseems clear now that these outcomes werean implicit and intended part of my educa-tion; I can only imagine their impact hadthey been explicitly articulated and prac-ticed during those formative years. ThoughI certainly needed to create my own mean-ing of my undergraduate experience, know-ing and practicing what was intendedwould have furthered my ability to make

sense of the many seemingly disparatelearning experiences that were part of mypostsecondary education.

For me, the current learning outcomesmovement in Ontario is about trying to en-sure that we are providing students with in-tentional opportunities to develop the en-during knowledge, skills and attitudes thatare valued in our programs, institutions anddisciplines. I hope that students leave with aset of capacities that will carry themthrough much of their lives, regardless ofwhether they use their learning in the spe-cific contexts in which they were taught.And yet, I suspect if you were to ask moststudents what they think of program out-comes, you would get a lot of blank looks inresponse. Although understandable, this isalso regrettable because generations of stu-dents are passing through our hallways aswe work through the details of fully engag-ing with students around learning out-comes.

Admittedly, some pedagogical ap-proaches for grounding learning outcomesare now well-established. For example, co-ops, research courses and community-en-gaged learning provide great opportunitiesfor consolidating and reflecting on previouslearning. Yet intentional opportunities forpractice, feedback and meaning-making arenot always fully integrated into the curricu-lum. And although many more approachesare being cultivated – for example, out-comes-based e-portfolios and capstonelearning experiences – it is difficult to findwell-established outcomes-based teachingand learning approaches embeddedthroughout many programs.

One emerging area of promise is co-cur-

ricular opportunities for students to inte-grate their own formal and informal learn-ing. At Queen’s University, for example, pi-lot projects are emerging to provide allstudents with outcomes-based e-portfoliosoutside of formal programs and curricu-lum. This approach does not require formalprogram engagement and allows for alltypes of student experiences, academic andotherwise. It is likely to be adopted bymany self-directed students and/or thosepreparing to enter the job market. But only

in combination with a more curricular ap-proach to aligning program outcomeswithin key learning experiences can wehelp ensure that the academic experiencefosters confident, well-educated, reflectiveand articulate citizens, knowledge creatorsand knowledge users…our students.

Kevin Parker was a well-known and respected psycholo-gist, supervisoteacher andmentor in theKingston com-munity. He wathe director ofthe PsychologyClinic atQueen’s, a training clinic forgraduate students in clinical psy-chology, from 2007-2013. In this

role, Kevin supervised each stu-dent in the Clinical Psychologyprogram in one of their firstpracticum placements, as well as anumber of other trainees. He wasalso responsible for the day-to-day operations of the clinic, aswell as strategic planning, andsupporting the clinical training as-pects of the program in manyways. Kevin was passionate abouthis work with children and theirfamilies, and indeed many clientssing his praises. It was alwaysclear that Kevin loved his job.

Prior to 2007 he was a psychol-ogist at Child and AdolescentMental Health Services at HotelDieu Hospital, as well as an Ad-junct Professor in the Departmentof Psychology at Queen’s Univer-sity. Kevin was a true scientist-practitioner – he was involved in anumber of research projects and

was often sought out as a statisticsconsultant, while also providingexcellent clinical service to manychildren, adolescents and families.

Kevin is remembered fondlyby his trainees for his straightfor-ward communication, quirkysense of humour, and metaphorsfor every situation. His influencehas spread beyond those he super-vised directly to those who havebeen supervised by his trainees.As a former trainee said “…somuch of what I do with my clientson a daily basis is the result ofKevin’s teachings. I now superviseother new clinicians and Kevin’swords often come out of mymouth during supervision.”

Kevin continued teaching andsharing his wisdom during his ill-ness and many have remarkedabout the grace with which he ac-cepted his terminal prognosis. In a

letter to his work community (stu-dents, colleagues, faculty, previoustrainees) he said: “Thank you all.For everything that I have given, Ihave received much in return. I amindeed grateful for what I havebeen given in this life.”

In his personal time, Kevin wasa keen canoeist and chorister, heenjoyed rugby and soccer and wasa man of many talents. Kevin wasknown for enjoying the simplethings in life – a cup of tea, andtime spent outdoors, especially atthe cottage he and his family built.He was very proud of his family –his three daughters and theirgrowing families brought him somuch joy. He was often sharingstories about them with his stu-dents and colleagues.

With the support of Kevin’sfamily, the university and the De-partment of Psychology, the Psy-

chology Clinic at Queen’s staffhave established the Dr. KevinParker Memorial Fund. Our goalis to develop a bursary in Kevin’sname for graduate students inClinical Psychology to fund par-ticipation in clinical trainingworkshops, with a special focuson clinical supervision. A violin, cello and viola canmake beautiful music. For the stu-dents in Sistema Kingston, an af-ter-school music program forat-risk children, those instrumentsare a source of pride and inspira-tion.

Earlier this school year, 20 stu-dents at First Avenue PublicSchool took part in SistemaKingston’s Paper to Wood Cere-mony. The kids exchanged theirpaper mache instruments – whichthey made during the first fourweeks of the program and used tolearn proper posture, care, andbow movement – for real violins,cellos and violas. The result was aceremony filled with joy, music,performances and proud familymembers.

“The kids’ desire to work hardenough to get to that special per-formance place, and to experiencethe achievement of performing islike nothing else,” says Jan LeClair, rincipal of First Avenue Pub-lic School. “The positive feedbackloop from your instrument, the au-dience, and your own efforts is acreative achievement that per-formance art intrinsically affords.”

“For most of these children, thiswas their first performance experi-ence and they rose to the occa-sion,” says Karma Tomm, directorof Queen’s Community Music whoinitiated and directs the program.

Akela Peoples, president andCEO of The Learning Partnership,the founding partner of SistemaKingston, found the ceremony in-spiring.

“Hearing that students nowsay ‘I can’t wait to go to school be-cause we have Sistema today’ cap-tures the essence of this program,”

says Ms. Peoples. “It helps stu-dents stay in school by providingthem with a sense of belonging tosomething bigger than them-selves. They are looking forwardto learning and that will pave theway to a bright future for them.”

The program is modeled on ElSistema, which started in 1975 inVenezuela by a musician/lawyer/politician/teacher who felt musiccan promote children’s healthypersonal development and helpchildren escape the cycle ofpoverty. Today there are more

than 400 Sistema-inspired musicprograms around the world.

Sistema Kingston’s mission isto promote “positive socialchange through the pursuit ofmusical excellence.” SistemaKingston is offered to children atno cost – the kids are only askedto make a commitment to the pro-gram and try their best.

“The vision of SistemaKingston is to inspire children toreach their full potential as indi-viduals, musicians and citizens.Sadly, our community is economi-cally divided, and there are largenumbers of children who simplydon't have access to opportunitiesthat others take for granted,” saysMs. Tomm.

Both the young musicians andthe university benefit from theprogram as it provides opportuni-ties for Queen's students as teach-ers, researchers and volunteers.There are several Queen's stu-dents from a variety of disciplinesvolunteering with the program. Acurrent PhD psychology researchproject is collecting data on musicperception from the program. Ju-lia Brook, an assistant professor ofmusic education at Queen’s, is in-volved in the research and evalua-tion of Sistema Kingston.

“Sistema Kingston provides aunique opportunity for Queen’sstudents to strengthen their con-nections to the Kingston commu-nity while enhancing their re-search and teaching skills.Personally, it is a privilege to bepart of this program, and to workwith such committed students,parents, grandparents, teachers,and community members,” saysDr. Brook.

Tucked away behind BotterellHall, a distinguished team of doc-tors, scientists, biostatisticians andstaff work every day to fight can-cer. Their discoveries have im-proved thousands if not millionsof lives worldwide.

But chances are you wouldn’tknow anything about their workfrom their organization’s formername: NCIC CTG.

That’s about to change with theadoption of a new identity. As ofMonday, Jan. 18, the only coopera-tive group in this country con-ducting the full range of cancertrials will be known as the Cana-dian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG).

“The new identity clearly de-scribes who we are and what wedo, while at the same time hon-ouring our past, present and fu-ture activities,” says Janet Dancey,Scientific Director, CCTG. “Formore than three decades, ourgroup has worked tirelessly to an-swer the most important questionevery cancer patient has: ‘What’sthe best treatment for me?’ Welook forward to fulfilling that rolefor years to come as the CanadianCancer Trials Group.”

Established in 1980 as the Na-tional Cancer Institute of CanadaClinical Trials Group, the organi-zation was commonly known byits acronym, NCIC CTG. The or-ganization’s core funder – theCanadian Cancer Society – andthe group’s senior leadershipidentified the need to re-evaluatethe identity to better reflect itsmission and mandate as well as

raise its profile among externalaudiences and key stakeholders.

“The Canadian Cancer TrialsGroup has a worldwide reputa-tion for its scientific excellence inthe fight against the disease,” saysDr. Richard Reznick, Dean,Queen’s Faculty of Health Sci-ences. “The new identity andname will serve to bring more at-tention to this group, which is animportant contributor to Queen’sresearch prominence.”

CCTG worked with UniversityRelations at Queen’s to developthe new name and identity. Uni-

versity Relations conducted nu-merous focus group sessions witha variety of stakeholders in orderto identify common themes andshared ideas upon which to basethe new identity and name.

“We are proud of both theprocess and the result,” Dr.Dancey says. “This exercise notonly helped us come up with anew identity, but the feedback andinput we received will be invalu-able as we seek to tell our storyand demonstrate the impact weare having on the world stage.”

The group is internationally

recognized, running trials in 40countries and partnering with re-searchers around the world. Lastyear, CCTG launched an interna-tional trial that has a good chanceof finding a cure for the biggestcancer killer in North America:non-small cell lung cancer. CCTGhas already redefined the medicalstandard of care for breast, lung,colon, lymphoma, prostate, brainand ovarian cancers. Anthony Wilson-Smith, presi-dent and CEO of HistoricaCanada, visited Queen’s Univer-sity on Thursday, Jan. 14, for apresentation on the organization’swork to bring Canada’s history tolight.

The main platform for this is theproduction of Heritage Minutes,60-second shorts that portray animportant event or person inCanada’s history, especially thosethat are little known or understood.

As Mr. Wilson-Smith points out,it is important for Canadians of allages to know their history better.

“I always say that our historyis the signpost that in many waysshows us how we got to where weare today, and not only that butgives us some indication of wherewe are headed or should beheaded, if we don’t heed lessonsof the past,” he says.

Queen’s University and St.Lawrence College are collaborat-ing on a new joint Bachelor of Sci-ence (Honours) advanced de-gree/diploma in biotechnologythat will produce career-readystudents to work in the emergingfield of biotechnology.

Students enrolling in the newBiotechnology Specialization Planat Queen’s University can earncredit towards the AdvancedDiplomas in Biotechnology at St.Lawrence, and vice versa.

“The university training willenhance participants’ theoreticaland research training, while thecollege environment will givethem hands-on technical expert-ise,” says Daniel Woolf, Principaland Vice-Chancellor of Queen’sUniversity. “Combined, the pro-gram will provide a transforma-tive student learning experience.”

Students may transfer aca-

demic credits between the two in-stitutions, resulting in the acceler-ated completion of both programs(a four-year BScH in biotechnol-ogy, and a three-year advanceddiploma in biotechnology) in justfive years.

Students can start thedegree/diploma at either institu-tion, and will spend between 2.5and 3.5 years at Queen’s, with theremaining time at St. Lawrence.The Bachelor of Science (Honours)biotechnology specialization willalso be available as a stand-alonefour-year degree program forQueen’s students. This programreceived approval at the sametime as the joint program.

Leading the way in researchTed Hewitt, president of the

Social Sciences and HumanitiesResearch Council of Canada(SSHRC) visited Queen’s Univer-sity on Wednesday, Jan. 13, withexecutive vice-president BrentHerbert-Copley, to speak with stu-dents, faculty and administration.During his visit he participated ina roundtable with graduate stu-dents, met with Principal DanielWoolf and Steven Liss, Vice-Prin-cipal (Research), and presented anupdate on the ongoing and futurevision of SSHRC to faculty mem-bers and researchers in a townhall meeting. Afterwards, Gazetteeditor Andrew Carroll spoke withDr. Hewitt about the organiza-tion’s role in the ever-changingfield of research and researchtraining.

GAZETTE: Looking ahead,how can SSHRC ensure thatCanada maintains or improves itsposition as a global leader in so-cial science and humanities re-search and training?

TED HEWITT: Our mandate,in some respects, is not very com-plicated. As it is stated in the leg-islation that created us, there aretwo aspects to our mission: one isto promote and support researchand training in the social sciencesand humanities; and second, toprovide advice to the minister incertain areas that touch upon thismandate. One of the key thingsfor us, given the nature of themandate and its fundamental ob-jectives, is to deliver on it the bestway we can and ensure excellencein all aspects.

That entails making sure ourprocesses are maintained at a veryhigh level, that we compare inter-nationally, that we constantly un-dertake reviews and evaluations,that we listen, through visits likethis, to our colleagues, that we en-gage effectively with the academiccommunity and that we engageeffectively with government andwith other stakeholders.

We are also in the process of fi-nalizing our strategic plan for2017-2020. That is directed whollytowards maintaining the highquality of service and the highquality of operation withinSSHRC and we’re looking at do-ing that with a focus in three ar-eas: helping researchers build andmaintain excellence in researchand the changing research envi-ronment of the 21st Century,through inter-disciplinary work,international work, digital schol-arship and so on; focusing on theneed to leverage and developpartnerships that would allow usto expand the range, scope and

impact of our funding; and mak-ing sure that all of our stakehold-ers in the community and theCanadian public in general areaware of the importance of thiswork.

GAZETTE: How is SSHRCpromoting greater investment inCanadian research from the pub-lic, private and not-for-profit sec-tors?

TH: There are a couple of ele-ments to this. One is promoting astrong working relationship withgovernment, and in this case withthe new government, to makesure they are well apprised of thecontribution that we make to re-search in social science and hu-manities in Canada and, throughour mandate again, to govern-ment itself in terms of policy de-velopment and to assisting thegovernment to achieve its goals.This in turn assists us in makingthe case for new or additionalsupport that would help us to ex-pand the work that we do and toprovide those benefits at an ex-tended or expanded level.

The other piece is throughleveraging, which I mentionedearlier, which will enable us towork with partners outside gov-ernment, potentially – typicallyother agencies such as NSERC,CIHR and MITACS, but alsoprovincial governments. We wantto remove barriers where we canand to build opportunities for ourresearchers to more easily accessadditional funding programs.

GAZETTE: How is SSHRCpromoting greater international-ization of social science and hu-manities research?

TH: We are currently focusingour efforts in this regard on theTrans-Atlantic Platform, a Euro-pean Commission-funded multi-national collaboration bringingtogether research funding agen-cies across Europe, North andSouth America, in order to build aunique and effective funding plat-form for cross-agency research.That will launch with the first callin February 2016, we expect, inthe area of digital scholarship.Other areas of focus will be devel-oped by the consortium in duecourse.

The second way is actuallybuilt into SSHRC’s own fundingplatforms to encourage interna-tional collaboration. Currently, inmany programs, such as the Part-nership Grant Program, it is possi-ble for co-applicants on grants tobe located outside of Canada aslong as the primary applicant is inCanada. Through this mechanism,we are able to directly fund thework of partners in other coun-tries. It’s fairly simple – it’s one ap-plication, one assessment, oneoutcome.

GAZETTE: SSHRC’s plan toadvance open science by promot-ing open access and the steward-ship of research data will involvesignificant changes for institutionsand researchers including in-creased costs. How is SSHRC sup-

porting researchers and institu-tions as they comply with chang-ing program guidelines?

TH: First let’s look at the openaccess issue. The policy for thathas been in place since May 2015.For the researcher, the costs ofensuring compliance with thepolicy are eligible expenseswithin the SSHRC grantingprocess. Researchers may alsoplace near-final versions of theirpublication on their own reposi-tories or their own websites, solong as articles are searchable orfindable, which helps to reducecosts significantly, so long asthat’s permitted by the journal inwhich they published.

On the other hand we areworking with institutions andother organizations to ensure thatjournals, particularly Canadianjournals, libraries, other reposito-ries, are in a position to effectivelymanage the demand that will oc-cur as a result of the policy onopen access. It may not meanfunding per se since we typicallyfund researchers but it may meanworking with institutions, organi-zations and the journals to makesure they have or are able to de-velop the right kind of businessmodels that will allow them to ab-sorb the influx.

When it comes to data, that is alonger conversation as the focus inthe short term is on open access.However, to some extent we willbe looking to develop a similarapproach when it comes to datamanagement.

Queen’s researcher ElainePetrof has been awarded majorfunding from the U.S. National In-stitutes of Health. The up to $1.2million will enable a multi-institu-tional team to further develop Re-poopulate, a synthetically derivedalternative to fecal transplants,used to treat recurrent C. difficileinfection.

Early trials of the defined mi-crobe cocktail with a small num-ber of patients at Kingston Gen-eral Hospital (KGH) have shownit to be highly effective in curingthe hard-to-treat, often fatal, dis-ease.

“We’ll be optimizing the for-mulation to test it in an early stageclinical trial,” says Dr. Petrof,(School of Medicine), a clinician-researcher at the Kingston GeneralHospital Research Institute(KGHRI). Dr. Petrof’s hospitalwork is being conducted throughthe Gastrointestinal Diseases Re-search Unit at Queen’s University.

Dr. Petrof is working with col-leagues at the University ofGuelph and Western Universityon the synthetic stool product.

“This funding is a tremendousboost for a very promising and in-novative discovery,” says RogerDeeley, Vice-Dean Research, Fac-ulty of Health Sciences andKGHRI president. “It will ensurethat Dr. Petrof and her team con-tinue to advance their efforts toaddress a common, widespreadand serious health threat. It iswonderful to see work being donein this exciting new research fron-tier being recognized in this way.”

While there are numerous C.difficile therapies being developedbased on human stool samples,Dr. Petrof’s group is the first toproduce a synthetic form of thebeneficial microbes, using culturesprocessed in a “robotic gut” biore-actor developed at the Universityof Guelph.

“We’re different from stooltransplants because we know ex-actly what’s in our mixture,” shesays. “This means a safer, more re-producible product.”

The group’s goal is to developa more effective fecal transplanttreatment for recurrent C. difficile.

“If this works, we’ve been ap-proached to expand it to other dis-eases,” Dr. Petrof says. “Emergingresearch is showing potential forthe use of fecal transplants to treatconditions such as ulcerative coli-tis and obesity.”

Now in its fourth year, theSchool of Urban and RegionalPlanning’s international course,which takes a group of Queen’sUniversity students to India towork on a planning project, is avital part of the program, one thatdifferentiates it from other plan-ning schools in Canada.

“This international course wasan experiment when it startedfour years ago. It’s not an experi-ment anymore,” says Ajay Agar-wal, an associate professor withSURP who leads the course. “It isvery successful, there is high de-mand.”

This year, the course returnedto Auroville, an intentionally-planned community, for a thirdtime where they were tasked withcreating a public participationframework to be used by the com-munity for planning and develop-ment projects. They stayed in thecity for 13 days in December.

Through the previous visitsthere has been a foundation oftrust built up between Queen’sand the community, to the point

where the residents and adminis-tration of Auroville look forwardto each new project and the returnof the students.

Dr. Agarwal says the main rea-son is that each group has deliv-ered a project report of profes-sional quality that is then used bythe community. This is not theo-retical work or a simulation.

This real world international

experience also is a draw for stu-dents to the course. No otherplanning school in Canada offerssuch an experience, he points out.

“It was a huge factor (for com-ing to Queen’s),” says CarolineMorrow (MPL’16), one of the 10students who took part in theproject. “When I was researchingschools, the first thing I would dowas look up what are the interna-

tional opportunities.”Before arriving in India for the

final phase of the course, the stu-dents conducted months of re-search, including interviewingmany of the people they would beworking with. The group alsoconducted a survey that received87 responses, which providedvaluable information.

The purpose of the course is tomirror that of a real consultationproject and the students werehard at work mere hours after ar-riving. There was a lot to be donein a limited amount of time.

One of the most difficult taskswas organizing logistics, says Dr.Agarwal, such as setting upphones, Internet connectivity andorganizing all the things neededfor the project. But that is part ofthe learning process, he adds. Inthe real world, not everything willgo as planned.

“I feel that adaptability is a bigthing we learned that I think willbe very valuable in terms of tryingto find a job because you canstress the fact that you did go to aplace you have never been beforeand worked effectively and cameout with a really good product,”

says Joanna Salsberg (MPL’16).“So it shows that your ability towork in tight circumstances andin a totally different place has in-creased from that experience.”

As Dr. Agarwal points out, theever-changing conditions andteamwork are key elements to thecourse.

“That’s a big learning outcomefrom this project. You really learnto work under very tight condi-tions as a team,” he says. “Every-body has to trust everybody elseand everybody has to respecteverybody else’s views and notget tied up about your ownviews.”

During their time in Aurovillethe workdays were long but theteam was able to complete two fo-cus groups, two workshops, threeinformation kiosks and a widerange of interviews.

“That’s a lot of work to do in 13days,” Dr. Agarwal says.

The group also presented theirwork to the Queen’s communityon Monday, Jan. 18.

A new research centre harness-ing the power of data analytics hasbeen established at Smith Schoolof Business at Queen's University.

The Scotiabank Centre for Cus-tomer Analytics, created with $2.2million provided by Scotiabank,will bring together professors andstudents to collaborate with Sco-tiabank teams on applied researchin customer analytics to providedata-driven solutions.

The Hon-ourable ElizabethDowdeswell,Lieutenant Gov-ernor of Ontario announcedWednesday, Jan. 13 that Dr. Craig,the co-scientific director of thePromoting Relationships andEliminating Violence Network(PREVNet), would be one of 25new members of the most presti-gious official honour in Ontario.

“I’m truly humbled by this ho-nour,” says Dr. Craig. “Throughthe partnerships in PREVNet,we’ve been able to make a signifi-cant contribution and impact. Imay be the co-scientific director,but this is really an Order of On-tario for PREVNet.”

Since forming PREVNet in2006, Dr. Craig has been a co-leader of this national initiativethat provides individuals and or-ganizations with the evidence-based knowledge, strategies, andtools to prevent violence. She hasbeen recognized, both in Canadaand internationally, as a leadingexpert on preventing bullyingand promoting healthy relation-ships amongst youth.

PREVNet’s bullying preven-tion toolkit has been disseminatedto every school in the province inan effort to provide educatorswith the support to address bully-ing in their schools and promotehealthy relationships. Moving for-ward, Dr. Craig says the plan is toensure that PREVNet’s toolkit isavailable to an even wider audi-ence.

“The next phase is focused onleveraging some of PREVNet’smost impactful tools, adaptingthem to the needs of the variousprovinces and territories inCanada, by collaborating withgovernment and industry to in-crease their impact,” says Dr.Craig.

With the best basketball play-ers in the world set to descendupon Toronto next month for theNBA All-Star Game, the Queen’sGaels women’s basketball teamwill be among those taking centrecourt as part of the weekend fes-tivities.

As part of the NBA All-StarGame weekend Ontario Univer-sity Athletics (OUA) men’s andwomen’s basketball teams will besquaring off. On Saturday, Feb. 13,the five-time defending CISwomen's basketball championWindsor Lancers will take on theNo. 10-ranked Queen's Gaels,while on Sunday, the No. 5-

ranked Ryerson Rams men's bas-ketball team will tip off againstthe crosstown-rival University ofToronto Varsity Blues.

Both games will take place atthe Enercare Centre in Toronto,and are scheduled to tipoff at ap-proximately 4:30 p.m.

“We are extremely excited to beinvolved with such a high profileevent,” says Leslie Dal Cin, Execu-tive Director, Athletics and Recre-ation. “This opportunity for ourstudent-athletes to representQueen's and showcase the com-petitiveness and talent of OUAwomen's basketball in front of anNBA audience is tremendous.”

Kevin Bailie, goalie for theQueen’s Gaels men’s hockey team,is this year’s recipient of the Mur-ray Douglas scholarship.

Murray Douglas (Comm’72)and Donna Douglas (Arts’73) es-tablished the award to recognizethe academic and athletic excel-lence of a varsity hockey player atQueen’s University.

Mr. Douglas played varsityhockey for the Gaels from 1968 to1972 and continues to be one of theGaels most active alumni, makingsignificant contributions to theprogram year after year. His con-tinued interest in the Queen’shockey program stems not onlyfrom his playing days, but largely

due to the work of Dave Descent,the former Gael Force president,who acted as the varsity hockeymanager during Mr. Douglas’days at Queen’s. Donna Douglasalso played hockey for the Gaelsin 1969-1970.

Bailie is once again a corner-stone of the Gaels hockey team en-tering his second year at Queen’s.

In his first season he wasnamed the CIS Rookie of the Yearand to the CIS All-Rookie teamalong with being named the OUAEast MVP, OUA East Top Goalie,OUA East Rookie of the Year andan OUA East First Team All-Star.

Queen’s employees will have anew and convenient way to gettheir T4 / T4A slips in February.

With the new MyHR self-ser-vice, employees will be able to logon to MyHR to view and printtheir T4 or T4A slips instead ofwaiting to receive them by mail attheir home address. To receive theinformation electronically, employ-ees must give consent by Jan. 29.

Christina Blanchard, AssociateDirector, Payroll Services, says thenew option offers employees sev-eral benefits while also helpingthe university reduce printing andmailing costs.

“The electronic option will giveemployees access to their T4 orT4A slips a week or more beforethey would arrive by mail,” shesays. “T4 or T4A slips will be avail-able online for six years, startingwith 2015 information, so we antic-ipate employees will enjoy the con-venience of logging on to MyHRand accessing previous slips if they

need to do so in the future.”The process for viewing and

printing electronic T4 or T4A slipsvaries slightly depending onwhether or not you currently re-ceive your pay advice slip onlinethrough MyHR:

• Employees who currently re-ceive their pay advice slips elec-tronically (approximately 95 percent of all Queen’s employees) canlog in to MyHR and give consentbetween now and Jan. 29.

• Employees who still receivea paper copy of their pay adviceslips will, by default, receive ahard copy of their T4/T4A mailedto their home address. If theywish to receive an electronic T4 orT4A slip, they will need to opt into receive electronic pay adviceslips and then give consent for theelectronic T4 or T4A slips.
