Australian Celebration CommunitiesThe Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) will give everyday Australians an opportunity to play their part in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

The specially-designed Baton will carry a message from Her Majesty The Queen on a 288-day journey across the Commonwealth before reaching Australia on 25 December 2017.

This journey will see the Baton passed between thousands of people throughout Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Oceania –a remarkable journey that shares the Gold Coast’s vibrant spirit and excitement for the Games with the world.

The Baton will start its Australian journey visiting major events, iconic landmarks and venues. From 25 January approximately 3,800 batonbearers will carry the Baton through Australian cities and across its vast deserts, mountains, rainforests and islands.

For the first time, the Baton will explore the northernmost reaches of Hammond Island in the Torres Strait, and Kangaroo Island in South Australia.

The GC2018 QBR aims to connect with as many people as possible from rural regions to capital cities, and everywhere in between.

Host state Queensland will provide a warm backdrop for the Relay’s final leg – with the Baton visiting World Heritage sites, tropical islands and remote communities.

The Baton will conclude its 388-day journey across the Commonwealth at the GC2018 Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018 where the Games will be declared open when the Queen’s message is read aloud.

The Community Batonbearer Nomination Program will be open for public nominations from 5 March – 15 May 2017. The QBR encourages people to nominate the locals in their community, young and old, who inspire greatness.

This will be the most inclusive and accessible relay to date. Running is not central to the QBR and special adaptors, harnesses and alternate modes of transport ensure people of all abilities can be involved.

Travelling the length and breadth of Australia for 100 days, the Baton will not only visit but spend quality time in Australian Celebration Communities in every state and territory. The Relay will showcase Australia’s history, culture, traditions, geography and people to the world.
