A MESSAGE FROM FATHER LARRY… I would like to share the following…. It is a compilation of some e-mails and phone messages I have received… “Hi Father, I am just checking in to see if you are alright and if you need anything. I know that I cannot adequately explain the gratitude and joy that fills me hearing from you. I feel humbled that with all of the people you care about and nurture, that you have included me in your thoughts and prayers.” Safely sequestered here at the rectory, and doing my best not to bother Pattiann too much, although some moments are better than others, I pray for the people who are alone and lonely. They do not have human contact or human caring. Please pray for them. Every day at Mass we pray for the doctors, nurses, and health care professional who care for the sick, please add to that list the household staff who clean. We pray for the police, fire and first responders, please add to that list all of the people who work in the supermarkets and other service related fields. The list can go on, in essence if you think of someone then they can use your prayers. To the world, prayers might seem meaningless, pray for them they have no sense. To those who believe, prayers can bring a holiness to our needy humanity. Finally, instead singing Happy Birthday when you wash your hands, slowly pray the Hail Mary. Remember you don't need to let the water run while you are scrubbing, that only wastes water. Reflection… To Live New Way Jesus represented the final covenant God made with human-kind. The sign of this covenant bore no mark of earthly distinctiveness – no tree of good and evil, no rainbow, no circumcision, no Passover lamb. The mark of the new covenant was Jesus Christ and his new way of living, distinguishing God’s chosen people from all others. Christ’s way of living was a new kind of circumcision, marked on the hearts of Christ’s followers by “the two-edged sword of God’s Word” (see Heb 4:12). God designed that a divinely chosen people should be distinguished from all others by the kind of love Jesus generously displayed. Christian identity is marked not by a knife but by the waters of baptism. In that sacred rite, a former way of living marked by the spirit of this world is put to death. From these waters, God’s new Israel emerges to live a new way, marked out by Jesus in the kingdom he came to proclaim here on earth. More to the point, the true followers of Christ, claiming membership in the “true religion,” are those who communion is marked by the values, the attitudes, and the priorities of Jesus. The people of true faith are those who, by their surrender to the Holy Spirit, guarantee that the two-edged sword of God’s Word will carve into their hearts the identity of Jesus’ personhood. That carving implies the pain of breaking with the spirit of this world. But if that is the sacrifice we are willing to share with Christ, his identity will become visible in a Church clearly distinguishable by her consent to carry the cross. Msgr. ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL LITURGICAL

GUIDELINES FOR THE CELEBRATION OF PALM SUNDAY AND THE

SACRED PASCHAL TRIDUUM Today, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (AOP) announced that Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez’s previous directive to suspend the celebration of all public Masses in the Archdiocese until further notice remains in effect. Updated liturgical guidelines developed by the Archdiocesan Office for Divine Worship and approved by the Archbishop were shared with all priests and deacons yesterday. They pertain to the celebration of Palm Sunday and the Sacred Paschal Triduum as well as the ongoing pastoral and temporal response of our local Church in the face of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. These liturgical guidelines are intended to provide for the pastoral needs of the faithful while respecting and abiding by directives from government agencies concerning gatherings and crowd sizes. The March 17, 2020 suspension of all public Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia remains in effect until further notice. This includes all Sunday and weekday Masses with the faithful. Priests will continue to offer Holy Mass privately during this period and to honor all requested Mass intentions.

All churches, following a possible published modified schedule, are to be open and available for the faithful to pray, especially to visit the Most Blessed Sacrament, in a manner that respects and follows current guidelines from governmental agencies concerning crowd sizes and gatherings.

Although Palm Sunday Mass will not be celebrated publicly, the palm distributed to the faithful on this day has great meaning. Palm is to be blessed and available for distribution at a later time determined locally.

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord, the Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday Masses are not to be celebrated publicly.

The Chrism Mass will not be celebrated publicly. Instead, Archbishop Pérez will celebrate it in a private manner at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is further postponed until Easter Monday, April 13, 2020. That timeline will be re-examined pending future development. The bishop celebrant of the conferral of Confirmation, in consultation with the pastor, will make arrangements for a new date for the celebration.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia will continue to stream the 11:00 a.m. Mass live from the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul every Sunday, including Palm Sunday, and will also stream liturgical celebrations for the Sacred Paschal Triduum from www.archphila.org. QofP – 149 pg. 3

The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light.

Reflections for the Fifth Sunday of Lent By Rev. Leonard N. Peterson “CGI.” For movie makers and fans, the letters stand for “Computer Generated Imagery.” That encompasses those special visual effects created using computer software. For example, those vast crowds or great armies need not be made of paid “extras” any more. Besides movies, this process is used to contribute also to images in art, printed media, video games, TV programs, shorts, commercials, videos, and simulators. “The evolution of CGI led to the emergence of virtual cinematography in the 1990s where runs of the simulated camera are not constrained by the laws of physics.” I want to point out that along with the cost benefits of this technology comes a distrust of what we see via all kinds of screens aligns with the abundance of lies all around us in the real world. We get lied to by some of our government officials and even by some of our own bishops. All this is the cultural context in which we ponder the ancient gospel story of the raising of Lazarus. It was up ’til then the most stupendous miracle Our Lord Jesus worked. But even the Gospels, the very literal Word of God, can become suspect in the cynical air in which we breathe these days. It is good to recall some facts included in this episode by St. John to convince anyone with an open mind of the truth of what he writes. Long long before there was CGI. First we note how Jesus orders a time lag between the death of Lazarus and His arrival at the tomb, so that there can be no mistake that Lazarus was indeed dead and buried. “Lazarus was not in a coma. He had been dead for a long enough time (four days) for the rabbinic authorities would have said that the soul had left the vicinity of the body and decay would have definitely set in.” As we have all seen enough cops and criminals movies and TV shows to know how awful the stink of decay must be as the characters react to it. Practical St. Martha had told Jesus “There will be a bad smell Lord. He has been buried four days.” Secondly, we find Jesus “glad” of the death for His disciples’ sake because this will provide a motive for the disciples’ belief in Him. Thirdly, the purpose of the miracle was to make “the glory of God the Father” manifest so that the people will believe Jesus was sent by Him.” In other words, Jesus did not do this for the sake of His own glory and fame. All through Lent we have had much encouragement as believers. Early on we had the Transfiguration; then His interaction with a Samaritan woman at the well; the healing of a man born blind. And now this incomparable raising of a dead man to life. As a result, we know for sure that our faith in Christ is not in vain. We follow the most honest Person who ever walked on this planet. Lenten penance and prayer help to make our amends for having offended Him by our sins. Yes at times all of us have moments of doubt. Especially when life presents us with unwelcome surprises and crises. But then it is that we can help ourselves by remembering the father of that boy who had been possessed and who brought his son to Jesus. When Jesus extolled his faith, the same father responded, “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” As a weak man myself, it’s one of my favorite prayers. Reading I: Ezekiel 37: 12-14 The prophet’s mission clearly is to his people in exile. He preaches on the hope-filled word of God to uplift them with the promise of new life, only because they have been spiritually dead. This will happen through God’s own Spirit. Reading II: Romans 8: 8-11 The Holy Spirit is the true power-giving life for the Christian here on earth. Later this same Spirit will enable him or her to rise up from death. The Gospel: John 11: 1-45, or 11: 3-7, 17, 20-27, 3-45 Jesus works His greatest of the seven “signs” by His giving of the gift of life. Having received this awesome power from His Father, calls forth Lazarus. The evangelist provides us with all the surrounding circumstances we need to bolster our belief in the miracle.
