THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Family PerspectivesJune 30th, The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel, Jesus admonishes, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and
looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” Clearly, Jesus does not want
families to be mired in mourning, resentment, worry or loyalties that
cause them to lose hope and direction.
The key is to seek God first and let all other cares be secondary.
Then, we will find direction and energy to fulfill our responsibilities and journey through life with joy
no matter what difficulties face us.
Let us pray: For engaged couples who will soon marry, that the
Holy Spirit will increase their love for one another and that their marriages will be a powerful witness of the love of God
for each of us.

REFLECTIONS OF A SEMINARIAN I am sure we have all had times where we have read certain passages in Scripture and been taken aback, and we ask ourselves, did that person really say that? Our Gospel this weekend probably presented us with a couple of these instances. A man approaches Jesus, and Jesus says, “Follow me.” Instead of following Him right away, he responds by saying, “Lord, let me go bury my father.” Many of us were probably like, this seems like a reasonable response, he will go bury his loved one and then follow Jesus. Jesus, however, responds very differently by saying, “Let the dead bury the dead.” When we heard this, I bet many of us were like, who does Jesus think He is? Shouldn’t He show some sympathy to this person? Imagine hearing this response during a time in your life when you were grieving a loss of someone; you probably would be very shocked by whoever responded this way. Another man who must have been close by then responds and says, “I will follow you Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” Again, this seems like a very reasonable thing to do. I’m sure any of us when asked to do something by someone when we could be gone for a long time would first want to say goodbye to our families first. Jesus, however, again seems to see things a different way, because He responds by saying, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” After hearing these couple of responses by Jesus, we may be finding ourselves very shocked. This does not seem to sound like the caring and loving Jesus that we all think he is. Despite these feelings that we may find ourselves having when hearing these things, my friends, I want to encourage you in saying that Jesus was not trying to be a mean and nasty person by responding this way. He was instead trying to show us that sometimes we do our best to make every excuse possible when asked to follow Jesus. Think about it, so often Christ is calling us to dive deeper into a relationship with Him, but we refuse because we are too busy, or we have better things to do. He was responding in this way to show us that falling into these traps can be very dangerous, because He wants all of us to follow Him and be led to give our whole selves for the sake of the kingdom. In reflecting on this, I cannot help but think about the celebration that we will be having here at the parish this weekend. This Sunday, June 30th, from 5:00-9:00 p.m., we will be coming together to celebrate 20 years of Father Dave being our pastor here at Queen of Heaven. What a great blessing this is for all of us! There was a time when he himself was asked by Christ to follow him, and instead of making excuses, he gave his whole life for the sake of the Church. As a parish community, we should take time this weekend to pray for him and give thanks for all that he has done for this parish community, and just think, none of it would have happened if it was not for him saying yes, to his vocation to the priesthood. I know that he has been a great pastor and example for me as I journey on the road to the priesthood, as well. My brothers and sisters, we certainly are not all called to be priests like Father Dave was called, but we are all called to dive into a much deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. May we all respond well, and not make any excuses, because when we do so we will be greatly blessed indeed.God Bless, Ben Schweigert

MINISTRY CORNERPRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
The Prayer Shawl Ministry is a “cluster parish ministry” in which parishioners from Nativity of the Lord, Queen of Heaven, St. Francis de Sales and St. Paul parishes come together to pray, share information and stories of the ministry as well as tips and tricks of crocheting or knitting. The shawls brought in are blessed (usually by Deacon Smith) and we end with a prayer remembering those who have received or need to receive a shawl. Our shawls are an outward sign of love and caring – a hug – to anyone who needs one. We just celebrated our 10th Anniversary as a ministry and have reached the 3,000-shawl benchmark after ten years.
We meet on the 2nd Tuesday each month, 10:00 a.m., at Nativity of the Lord Jesus Church, all year-round. New members are always welcome. For more information, please contact Ginny Smith at 330-644-4132 or [email protected]; or Barb Zimmerman at 330-699-4769 or [email protected].
The Prayer Shawl Ministry’s next meeting is Tuesday, July 9th, 10:00 a.m., at Nativity of the Lord Jesus Church. Please remember to bring your completed shawls for blessing, your current shawl to work on and any left-over yarn to share with others as we celebrate God’s love and blessings.

PRAY FOR OUR NATIONGod of justice and Lord of all, You guide all creation with fatherly care. On this Independence Day, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations. You reveal that those who work for peace will be called your sons and daughters. Continue to send Your Spirit to touch the hearts and minds of all who cherish the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And as You have called us to be one nation, grant that under Your providence our country may share Your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

CATHOLIC CEMETERIES ASSOCIATION – SEEKING BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT LEADERS
Catholic Cemeteries Association is expanding our monthly grief support program to include groups at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland and Calvary Cemetery in Lorain and are seeking group leaders. Qualified candidates will have National Catholic Ministry of Consolation certification through the Diocese of Cleveland, a calling to serve the bereaved in our communities, and a compassionate and listening heart. Candidates will have the ability to work with diverse groups of people with varying grief needs and be beyond any significant personal grief/loss. Grief support groups meet the 3rd Sunday of every month from 3:00-4:00 p.m. (group leaders arrive a half-hour early to set up). The grief support leaders will facilitate and guide discussions, not counsel. Support group leaders will receive a small stipend for each session led. If you are interested but cannot commit to a monthly group, we are also seeking individuals to serve as substitute group leaders at our five support group locations. We provide monthly agenda/handouts, meeting space and refreshments, and (if needed) NCMB Minister of Consolation training. All interested candidates may contact Rhonda Abrams, Bereavement Coordinator, at 216-930-4866 or [email protected].
