Here we are again and we all seem to be loving the warm sunny weather we have been blessed with, speaking of blessings

catch our update on Burton Waters Boat Safety Day where the local Reverend (Julia Hepburn) popped by to wish all our boaters a safe and happy season (pg15), whatever you did Julia we are truly thankful for the kind skies it has brought us! There are certainly some things we can control in life and those we cannot, so maybe take a small step to a better future by kick starting your energy levels with David Lloyd’s wise words (pg 4), you’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel once you’ve taken the plunge! On Saturday 31st May, Burton Waters Boat Sales held their annual ‘Back to Boating’ Day – an event dedicated to getting all ages back onto the water as well as creating a fun filled day for the whole family. As promised, this year was bigger and better than the previous, and attracted hundreds of both familiar and fresh faces! Kicking off at 10am, the marina looked a perfect picture – retro Ice Cream Van ‘Betsy’ created a beautiful contrast to the luxury cars and motor yachts around her. With over 14 different stalls for visitors to browse, the marina buzzed with a light hearted ambience

as people debated over which delicious treat to pick and eagerly listened to advice from the RNLI Sea Safety Caravan. There truly was something for everyone – even the family dogs! The relaxed atmosphere radiated from the live music performed through the day and visitors enjoyed the dulcet tones of singers (including Jamie Lee Harrison, Sophie Hopcroft, Daniel Lee Lambert, James Harvey and many more) whilst enjoying a refreshing drink (or two!) courtesy of the Boat Sales office.

However, the biggest turn out proved to be for the ‘man overboard’ display where local Yacht Broker, Andrew Pitchford, took the plunge after being publicly voted to demonstrate. The whole day proved a hit with everyone that attended, with the delicious Cupcakes by Clare even selling out half way through the day! Burton Waters raised over £300 for RNLI Skegness Lifeboats and would like

to thank everyone involved for their excellent contributions to the success of the event.

As a Personal Trainer we dabble with lots of different ideas in the treacherous high seas of health and fitness advice, anything and

everything from nutrition, to physiotherapy, or even psychology. I guess thats what makes us ideal candidates for filling the pages of the very magazine that your reading. It can be pretty daunting however when your precious wisdom comes under question. I often write these articles frozen, thinking about how experts in those specific fields might be wincing at the delicate tightrope I’m treading of offering an opinion and stating something as fact. In a way perhaps I’m contributing to making these waters even choppier? Yet I’m totally comfortable doing so. How can I be so sure of myself. Well read on.

The shelves of Waterstones are heavy with the burden of yet more diet books, and lifestyle paradigms for your consideration. Every one offering a new insight on how you could be living happier healthier lives, each as sure of its own dogma as the last. Its hard with this wealth of information to know which way to turn and who’s side to take, we see this in our industry all the time. However I believe there’s something thats been lost in the way in which we apply the information we receive. As in…We don’t. Half read books and unapplied ideas fall foul of the next big thing, only for the process to start all over again long before your next audiblle credit rolls round. Like a child with a shiny new toy we stare at it lovingly before fickly moving on to a newer shinier ideology. Never truly grasping wether what we tried reached its full potential. The life works of an expert author becoming little more than an ornament for our coffee table.

It’s not until we are truly committed to trying out an idea for a prolonged period of time that it becomes worth anything of any value. Experience gives you the virtue of being able to speak from

a place of one, therefore making the advice far more relevant to who it matters most. i.e. You! Its only this way that you can truly understand and explore the limitations of the idea being offered to you. Perhaps then we could become our own coaches and cut our ties to an over reliance on ‘experts’ for advice. Breaking from the endless cycle of replacing half applied ideas with new ones we can build our own maps by mixing a collection of experiences into something that guides us to our goals.

No matter what template for health and fitness you subscribe to be it CrossFit, Tabata, long distance running, weightlifting, 5 2, Paleo, or even vegan, there’s limitations to them all. If you do find yourself taking on new advice to tackle something you feel you need help with, take it on and stick to it to the letter for a prolonged period, 90 days, even a year if you can. It wont be long before your body will show you if what your doing is sustainable or healthy because you’ve experienced the idea on a very physical level, its benefits and limitations will become very apparent. Next time you hear something you think could help you improve, get committed put the blinkers on and take the first of many steps on the journey of finding out if it will work for you, because in a world of signposts all pointing in different directions you might actually miss what they are pointing at. Trust me I’m speaking from a place of experience…

At long last summer is here, and a number of things have been happening within the Club.

In March we held our first ever New Season Boat Blessing which was administered by the Reverend Julia Hepburn ably assisted by the Springline choir and Sue Hodge (who could forget Mimi from ‘allo ‘allo). RNLI provided additional safety advice and checks and we gave out free bacon butties & coffee to

sUMMer at lasteveryone who turned out. Just as well as it was so cold. The good news was that we were able to raise some funds not only for the RNLI but for Burton Church as well.

March also saw the return of our annual Fitting-Out Supper at Woodcocks. The event was well attended by members and guests who were once again very well looked after by Matt & Claire and their team.

Saxilby for their usual Fish & Chip Supper. Once again a great evening thanks to Ann & Wendy who organized everything to ensure that the food was hot and that the weather held fine. (I tell you, those girls can arrange anything).

On the 16th of April 4 boats set sail for Boston on the first Club Cruise of the year. The first night was spent at Langrick Bridge where we dined at the Witham & Blues, superb American style restaurant.

Day 2 dawned and we were about to set off for the last leg to Boston when one of our boats went lame. Never mind, we left Zaba behind to sort out his problem (survival of the fittest & all that), and set sail for Boston. On arrival we were cordially met by the Boston Motor Yacht Club who invited us to use their moorings for the day. If you are visiting Boston, give them a call. We left the moorings at 14:00 to return to Langrick to pick up Zaba, only to find that he had already sailed. Guessing that he had headed back upstream toward our Saturday night mooring at Dogdyke (such a lovely name), we followed in his wake. Sure enough, there was Zaba snuggly moored up outside the Packet Inn. An evening of wining & dining in convivial company followed as we sat outside under the stars.

Day 3 saw us all ready to head home to Burton Waters which was achieved

despite Zaba having his usual tantrums, Banjo & Tern 11 picking up weed & overheating, and oh did I mention that Goodspell lost a battery? A great cruise in fabulous weather. Thank you guys.

What’s next? Well we have more cruises planned, to West Stockwith and Newark & Gunthorpe. Our usual First Friday Club Nights at Woodcocks and some practical training for all our members.

Lorries operated by Beverley Transport have been a familiar site at Burton Waters since the marina was established, following the move from Brayford Pool to the enlightened development of lakeside properties near the Fossdyke Navigation

The business has been transporting boats since the late Nineteen-Eighties, using custom-built vehicles with air-suspended trailers. Drivers Neil, Paul and Doug have built up a well-earned and cherished reputation for care and proficiency.

Moving boats is not just a commercial activity and came about through a chance encounter between Paul and a ‘mariner’ who wanted some boats moving to Scotland.

The craft are treated as if they belong to the drivers and many boating friends have been made over the years. Customers vary in shape, size, affluence and tem-perament making the work interesting and eventful.

Having become more or less confined to the office Doug found time to recount some of the stories built up over the years resulting in the book entitled “Keels On Wheels”. It is a fairly light-hearted look at the world of the drivers moving boats by road.

Burton Waters Marina in conjunction with Burton Waters Boat Club, Lincolnshire Boat Training Services and the RNLI set up a Safety Day at the Marina where all Boaters could ensure their craft were ready for the oncoming season. To fulfil this requirement Lincolnshire Boat Training Services

advised those present of the various courses that were available to meet their boating needs. The RNLI, with a small team of Sea Safety Advisors, provided a Lifejacket Clinic and were able to complete Advice on Board (AOB) & Advice on Shore (AOS) procedures to answer boater’s questions and to

ensure they carried the right Safety Equipment on their craft. The Burton Boat Club kindly provided the marquee, ran a Tombola (takings divided for the local Church, RNLI and the Boat Club) as well as providing free bacon butties for all those attending! They were also available to talk about the benefits of membership.

So what is an Advice on Board (AOB)?An Advice on Board is a free service provided by the RNLI designed to save lives by changing the attitudes and behaviour of those who go afloat for fun. This is not an inspection with the possibility of a pass or fail. Instead, it is a friendly, confidential face to face chat with the owner or skipper, aboard or beside his or her boat, about safety equipment. We talk about what is needed to be carried, where and how it should be fitted, how to use it and the importance of regular maintenance. The Sea Safety Advisor uses a check list as an aide memoir for items of discussion but nobody and no boat can fail an Advice on Board. A copy of this check list is given to the owner or skipper to action points raised if he or she wishes to do so. No one will follow up to ask whether points raised have been carried out. It should be emphasised, however, that an AOB is not a survey, nor any inspection of the engine, electrical or gas system. Nor does it give any party the jurisdiction to prevent a boat or owner from going to sea.

At 11.00 am after a short service by the local Reverend Julia Hepburn, accompanied by the Springtime Parish Choir, she blessed all the craft in the Marina by taking a passage in Barry Jopson’s Boat.

a wide selection of craft moored in the Marina and answered numerous questions on many different subjects the boaters asked us to explain.

In the afternoon Peter and Joe gave a mooring demonstration with and without use of a Bow Thruster with Richard giving the commentary on the pontoon.

Following the mooring Richard and Ian gave a manoeuvring and how to pick up a ‘Man overboard’ demonstration using a

small ski boat.During the day Burton Waters Sales

Team kindly ran a raffle in aid of the RNLI Skegness Station which I’m pleased to report managed to raise £330.

Overall an excellent day with all those attending enjoying themselves and the RNLI was getting the Safety Message across to the many boaters who visited the Stand.

my journeyDon Beeby is living testament that not all trips go exactly to plan, but they are a healthy learning curve for us all!

having tried twice before, I decided to try again, so I booked a Ribble Link Crossing for Sunday 16th September to get

me on the Lancaster Canal.I filled the fuel tank with an extra

16 gallon top-up fuel and on the 8th Graham and I sailed from Burton Waters to Torksey where I dropped him off. I sailed through the locks and moored up for the night.

After Dave rolled up with the bottles of beer we went to the White Swan for an evening meal before retiring onto the Sea Mist for the night. I made an early start at 5am to prepare for my motley crew arriving at six! On board we had Doug, Martin and my mate and helmsman Paul, and so we cast off at around quarter past the hour for the 27 miles trip to Keadby Lock.

This was our first trip heading along on the Trent so we all were really excited, we arrived at Keadby at 9.30am after taking a long while to get through the locks on to the Stainforth and Keadby South Yorkshire Navigation.

We set off for Thorne and arrived at

Godnow swing bridge where we were met by Lorna and Clive complete with them taking some snaps of us....now I know what it feels like to have the paparazzi on your tail! We got to Thorne mooring up at about 1.30pm.

Doug and Martin left us at this point, leaving Paul and myself to set sail for Castleford. We arrived in the dark at 10pm!

The next morning we ventured into Leeds for a bit of lunch and shopping and we finally reached Kirkstall Lock at 4.30pm, unfortunately this was locked so we couldn’t go any further (good advise is to always call ahead of getting there so you can make plans-this is a valuable lesson learnt).

This was a turning point in our adventure....after settling down for the night I discovered I had thrown the wrong bag away at Woodlesford Lock skip about ten miles back so I had to grab a taxi the next morning to find that the skip had been emptied! With the delays at the lock, and the lost bag with all our tablets, charges, mobiles and lifelines of technology probably flatten

to a pancake we decided we wouldn’t make Ribble Lock on time, so we made the decision to head for home. After spending time at Skye House Lift Bridge on the new junction canal

we set off the next morning

to find Kirk Lang Lift Bridge was out of order for an hour (do you ever get the feeling that lady luck has departed from your life for a short period of time?).

When we finally made it back to Thorne we left the boat at Leigh Goest to have some work done. My kind wife Pat and one of Pauls mate picked us up from Thorne on the 12th September.

On the 16th my wife took me back to fetch our boat along with Katie, Graham and their children Ruby and William, once at Keady Graham they all abandoned ship and I had a quiet night along on Sea Mist.

Paul came back the next day to get me through the lock onto the Trent then I merrily sailed on up to Burton Waters. I have to say despite all the problems I had a great time and it’s quite nice not to be checking your mobile phone all the time!

summer feastFresh fruit is in abundance at the moment so try our easy summer crumble for a sweet treat.

INGREDIENTS4 medium brown onions, thinly

sliced1/2 cup all-purpose flour

6 tablespoons Japanese Panko

bread crumbs 1 teaspoon kosher

saltNonstick cooking spray

1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons

kosher salt, divided 32 oz fresh

haricots verts, ends trimmed

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

24 oz Porcini mushrooms, sliced

1-to-1 1/4 teaspoons freshly

ground black pepper 3-to-4

cloves garlic, minced

1/4-to-1/2 teaspoon freshly

ground nutmeg

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup chicken broth

1 cup whole milk

2 cups half-and-half

METHODPreheat oven to 475F.Combine onions, flour, panko crumbs and salt in a mixing bowl and toss. Coat a sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray and evenly spread onions on pan. Place on the middle rack in the oven and bake until golden brown; about 30 minutes. Toss two to three times during cooking. Once done, remove from oven and set aside until ready to use. Reduce oven tempera-ture to 400F.Meanwhile, prepare beans. Bring a gallon of water and one tablespoon salt to

a boil in a saucepan. Add beans and blanch for 5-to-10 minutes until almost tender. Drain and imme-diately plunge into iced water; drain and set aside.Melt butter in a skillet set over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms, 2 teaspoons salt, and pepper and cook, stirring occa-sionally, until mushrooms begin to give up some of their liquid; approximately 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and nutmeg and continue to cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. Sprinkle flour over mixture and stir to combine. Cook for a min-

ute. Add broth and simmer for another minute. De-crease heat to medium-low and add milk and half-and-half. Cook until mixture thickens, stirring occasion-ally; approximately 6 to 8 minutes.Remove from heat and stir in half of the onions and all of the green beans. Pour into a casserole dish and bake in the oven until bubbly, for about 30 minutes; stirring occasion-ally. Top with remaining onions and bake another 15 minutes until onions are crispy. Remove and serve immediately.

METHODIn the summer, when all of the best fruits are at the peak of their season, it is the ideal time to make a fresh fruit tart. This recipe is super versatile, because the best fruit to use is the ripest, sweetest fruit you have on hand. You can use peaches, plums, straw-berries, apricots, grapes, whatever your favorite is. While traditionally a tart would be open faced, this one has a sort of a crumble on top. While those who are super ambitious choose to make there own puff pas-try, I always use the frozen ready made puff pastry, and I find the results are great, and the convenience can’t be beat. This dessert is the ideal ending to a

summer barbecue meal.Roll out the pastry dough when it is thawed, and spread it over a round tart pan (about 11 inches is good, and one where the bottom pops out). Completely cover the bottom of the pan with fresh fruit. Next make the crumble. In a mixing bowl, blend together the flour, sugar, butter, and pinch of salt until it becomes uniform and smooth like a dough. Crumble it in chunks over the top of the fruit. Bake the tart in an oven preheated to 400 degrees for approximately 45 minutes. Let cool before serving, I prefer it best at room temperature, and

with ice cream. There won’t be

much left of this!

METHOD1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well.2. Form four equal patties.3. Grill burgers until the reach desired doneness.4. Top with Bacon jam, crumbled blue cheese and red onion5. Enjoy!
