2 General notes

This manual is effective for the AC0 anti-flood protection systemQuatrix-K.The manual is used for installation, commissioning, operation, main-tenance, repair and decommissioning. The operator must keep themanual at a safe place.Indications on possible standards, test signs, quality symbols andtrademarks are state-of-the-art at the printing date of this manual.Deviations with illustrations, dimensions and weights are possible. We reserve the right to carry out amendments and improvementswithout prior notice to keep up with technical progress.

Date of installation, operating and maintenance manual: 06 February 2008

According to DIN 1986-100, para 7.4, drain points below the backflowlevel have to be protected against backflow from the sewers by automa-tic wastewater lifting plants with backflow loop as per DIN EN 12056-4or, under certain conditions, by anti-flood protection systems as perDIN EN 13564-1.

The following criteria have to be met when fitting an anti-flood protec-tion system:

The wastewater must be capable of draining away along a naturalslope. There must only be a small number of users. The drainage point(s) cannot be used during a backflow situation.Installation must be located in a room with inferior utilisation.

Safety-conscious workingThese operating instructions contain fundamental information and pre-cautionary notes. Please read the manual thoroughly prior to installationof unit, connection to power supply and commissioning. It is imperativeto comply with all other operation instructions referring to componentsof this plant. The mentioned safety notes, the pertinent national acci-dent prevention regulations as well as possible internal working-, opera-tion and safety regulations of the user have to be observed. The safetynotes which could lead to danger for people in the case of their non-observance as well as in the case of warning of electric voltage, aremarked with the general safety marks.

Safety (from: VDMA information sheet 24292)This operation manual contains basic information which must beobserved during installation, operation and maintenance. Therefore, this operation manual must be read by the fitter as well as thecompetent personnel / user prior to assembly and commissioningand must always be available at location of plant.

Home owners and developers have to bear the costs of cellar floodingthemselves in the event of sewer backflow because the local authoritiescannot be held liable for such damage. Owners are also liable to theirtenants for any damage caused. The relevant standards therefore stipu-late that sanitary installations which are located beneath the backflowlevel must be protected by lifting plants (active backflow prevention) orby anti-flood protection systems (passive backflow prevention).Although it is now possible to take out insurance against such damage, the insurance companies usually turn down any claims if building regula-tions have not been implemented or have been incorrectly observed.

The anti-flood protection system is a safety device and must thus bepermanently kept in operable condition. It must be easily accessible atany time.

SupplementsThe operator of the plant must supplement the operating manualwith instructions on existing national regulations for accident preven-tion and environmental protection.Besides the operating manual and the binding regulations for acci-dent prevention valid in the user country and at the point of use, theapproved expert regulations for safe and professional working haveto be observed.

CopyrightACO Passavant GmbH holds the copyright for these operatinginstructions. These operating instructions are written for the assem-bly, operating, maintenance and supervisory staff. They contain regu-lations and technical drawings whose complete or partial reproduc-tion, dissemination or use for competitive purposes, or passing onto others, is prohibited unless authorised in advance.

Prior to installation, the plant (flaps, body, electrical unitsetc.) has to be checked for transport damages. A da-maged unit may not be put into operation. In such a case,

please contact us immediately (refer to chapter 1.1).

If the installation and operating manual is infringed upon, damages toproperty, personal injuries or fatal accidents cannot be excluded.

The plant may only be operated, maintained and commissioned by per-sons who are familiar with the operating manual, the instructions con-tained therein and the pertinent regulations for job safety and accidentprevention.

The ready assembly / electrical installation must be carried out by aspecialist contractor. This company must ensure that relevant DIN andVDE standards and directives (0100, 0113) as well as regulations oflocal power supply utilities are observed and adhered to!

Quatrix-K (type 3F)for above ground pipes

Quatrix-K (type 3F)for installation in the base plate

The ACO automatic anti-flood protection system Quatrix-K type 3F cor-responds to DIN 13564 and is intended for use with wastewater contai-ning faeces. The automatic anti-flood protection system is equipped with an automa-tic valve and an emergency seal which is capable of being operatedmanually. In the normal operation condition (fig. 1), both flaps are open.

If in case of a backflow the sewers rise above permissible pipe fillingheight, the pressure sensor sends a signal to the control device. Thecontrol triggers the closing of the valve flap by means of an electricmotor. During backflow period, the connected drainage objects may notbe used. If backflow situation eases up, this is noticed by the controland the flap is opened automatically. Backflow is signalled by a visualand an audible signal (fig. 2). In the case of mains failure, an integratedbattery keeps up operational readiness up to 24 hours.

The emergency seal serves as an additional safety. With the help of thisseal, the second flap can be manually locked (fig. 3). It is of essentialimportance that the emergency seal is re-opened after e.g. return fromholidays.

Fig. 1

Fig . 2

Fig. 3

The control device must be fitted in such a way that all signals are noti-ced by the plant user. This ensures that in case of a closed valve, theappliance drained via the anti-flood protection system is not used. Themanufacturer is not liable for self-inflicted backflow damages.

Prior to working at the control or at the water installations, isolate from mains electrical supply.

In order to guarantee the operational reliability of the plant, it has to bemaintained as per DIN 1986-3. We recommend to take out a mainte-nance contract with the plumber of your choice. Please note that duringa backflow or during a period where backflow is likely to occur, nomaintenance works may be carried out.

1. Flap - open -: Flap open (normal condition), water drains off, the valve closesautomatically in the case of backflow.

Fig. 4.1

1. Flap - open - 2. Flap - closed -

2. Flap - closed -:Flap closed, water cannot drain off.

3 Installation

Drainage objects lying above the backflow level (fig. 5) must not drainvia a backflow safety valve. In this case, wastewater accumulatingabove the backflow level could not be drained anymore in case of back-flow. Because of the principle of communicating pipes, the wastewaterwould escape from the lowest drain points below the backflow level andflood the cellar.

For this reason, all drainage objects fitted above the backflow level haveto be connected behind an anti-flood protection system (fig. 6). In thecase of backflow, the downpipe fills up to road level at the most, theanti-flood protection system prevents the wastewater from drawback inlower drainage objects and it thus escapes via the manhole covers.

The ACO cleaning pipes/anti-flood protection systems are excellentlysuited for refurbishment as they only have a minimum proper gradient of12 mm. The anti-flood protection systems must be fitted in the pipegradient, the proper gradient is a result of the product construction.

1. Displays and push-buttons (fig. 26)The control is equipped with a display consisting of four light-emit-ting diodes, an operation unit (two push-buttons) as well as an audi-ble signal transmitter. The function of the light-emitting diodes andpush-buttons is explained in the following:

1.1 Green light-emitting diode:Power statusThe light-emitting diode indicates respective power status. In thecase of mains operation, the diode lights constantly. This is the nor-mal condition. In the case of lapse of mains voltage, the controlautomatically switches over to battery operation. This is signalledby flashing of the diode.

1.2 Red upper light-emitting diode:Backflow detectionContinuous lighting of the light-emitting diode signals backflow. If

there is no backflow, the light-emitting diode is off.

1.3 Yellow light-emitting diode: Valve statusThe light-emitting diode signals the valve status. If the diode lightscontinuously, the valve is closed. A flashing light indicates that valveis moving. Normally, however, this light-emitting diode is off.

1.4 Red lower light-emitting diode:Fault diagnosisIf the ACO QUATRIX-K anti-flood protection system has a motorfault, the diode indicates this condition by lighting continuously. Incase of battery fault, the diode is flashing.

Fig. 26

1.5 System reset buttonBy pressing the push-button once, the audio alarm is cancelled incase of a fault. By pressing the push-button twice, the system isreset (the vave is opened and moves to initial position).

1.6 Test button By pressing the push-button once, the valve is closed. Pressingtwice re-opens the valve.

1.7 Audible signal transmitterThe control is equipped with an audible signal transmitter. If thevalve is closed, an audible signal sounds (continuous tone). In thecase of faults (motor/battery), an intermittent tone sounds. Bypressing the system reset button once, the audible signal is swit-ched off.

2. Battery2.1. Behaviour in case of battery fault

Establish mains connection and wait. Battery faults always occurwith insufficient charging condition of the battery or with a dama-ged battery fuse.

2.2 Motor fault in mains / battery operationCheck motor fuse and supply or connecting cable for damages. Ifrequired, start initialisation by double-pressing button (5). Checkmotor spindle by de-assembling the housing cover (spindle break). In this case, contact fitter / specialist contractor.

The control is equipped with a battery which ensures operation forat least 24 hours in case of a mains failure. After 24 hours, anempty battery has again attained 90 % of its capacity.

Batteries are subject to a natural ageing. In this case, the battery has tobe exchanged (original type from manufacturer). The manufacturer recommends to exchange the battery prophylacticallyafter 5 years.

Caution!

A battery exchange may only be carried out byan electrician. Prior to opening the housing, isolate from mains electrical supply.

3. Fuses3.1 Fuses

A microfuse is fitted to the circuit board to protect the micro-elec-tronics of the control effectively against connection faults and occu-ring faults.

Battery fuseFuse 1 protects the control against reverse polarity of the battery. If thefuse responds, cabling has to be checked and a new fuse has to beinserted.

3.2 Fuse valuesFuse Value Behaviour Battery fuse 2.5 A slow-blowing

The anti-flood protection system does not have any mains fuse in theform of a safety fuse. One fuse is integrated in the primary circuit ofthe mains transformer in the form of a thermal switch. In case of anelectronics defect, this switch opens after a short period when reachinga temperature of 120°C. In this happens, the control is seriously dama-ged. It must be handed on to the fitter / specialist contractor for repair.

3.3 Automatic self-testEvery 4 weeks, the control carries out a self-test. The motor is startedand stopped for some seconds to avoid the seizing of the drive. Thebattery is checked at the same time and a fault signal is given, whereapplicable.

3.4 Battery warningWith every run of the flap, the battery is checked. In case of a low bat-tery capacity, a warning signal is given (LED 4 flashes slowly). In thiscase, the buzzer is not switched on. If this signal appears, the batteryshould be exchanged promptly for safety reasons.

Even in the case of mains operation, function of the control is guaran-teed only with a fully functional battery. The control must not be opera-ted without battery!

3.5 DecommissioningIn battery operation, the device can be switched off manually. For this, both buttons must be pressed at the same time for approx. 5 seconds. As an acknowledgement, all LEDs light up, then the control is switchedoff. The battery hence remains loaded. If the appliance is separated from the mains, it switches to battery ope-ration until same is unloaded and appliance switches off completely.

1. Fit the control at the intended location. The control housing has to befixed with 2 bolts. In accordance with VDE regulation 0100, the controlis splash water and dripping water proof (IP 56) (fig. 27).

The control device must be fitted in such a way that all signals are noti-ced by the plant user. This ensures that in case of a closed valve theappliance drained via the anti-flood protection system is not used. Themanufacturer is not liable for self-inflicted backflow damages.

Connection must be carried out by a specia-list contractor; VDE regulations (0100,0113)must be adhered to

Prior to working at the control or at thewater installation, isolate from mains elec-trical supply!

Caution!

2.2 Control hose: By means of the rapid connector, the control hose must be connec-ted to the cover of the anti-flood protection system and the controlbox (fig. 28.2).

Between automatic anti-flood protection system and control, the controlhose must be laid ascending for the complete length, as otherwise con-densed water may affect its function.

Caution!

2.1 Mains connection: When supplied, the mains connection (safety plug, 230 V, fuse min.B 10) is already connected to the control unit (fig. 28.1).

2.4 Fault transmitter contactsAs a standard feature, the control is equipped with a potential-freeoutput with which further audible or visual signals can be connectedoptionally. The contact acts as two-way contact.

2.3 Supply cable:The motor supply cable is connected to the motor at the works. This supply cable must be connected to the control box by meansof the electric push-fit connection. The electrical push-fit connec-tion corresonds to protection grade IP 67 (fig. 28.3).

The cables and hose screw-joints, firmly bolted at the works, may not bedisconnected. This would affect flood-protection.

The fault transmitter contact closes in caseof a fault signal. During configuration of thecontacts care has to be taken that a max.current of 500 mA is not exceeded. In addi-tion, only pure Ohm resistive loads may beconnected. Signalling devices, PCs, tele-phones and alarm devices can be connectedto the contacts.

2.7 Switch-on process: The ACO QUATRIX-K automatic anti-flood protection system mustbe carried over in a definite condition by the control unit. Thisis achieved by the switch-on process (insert mains connection). An initialisation is always carried out (fig. 29) when the control is switched on from a currentless condition by double-pressing the system reset button.

Initialisation is done in such a way that the valve is completelyclosed at first and then re-opened. When reaching the open posi-tion, initialisation is finished and control passes into automaticoperation (green diode lights). Fig. 29

Prior to wor-king at thecontrol or at

the water connection, isolate from mains elec-trical supply!

2.9 Resetting the controlIsolate from mains electrical supply. By pressing the systemreset button and the control button at the same time for 5seconds, the control appliance is reset to works settings, i. e.is carried over in the currentless condition.

Extension elements for recessed installationIf an anti-flood protection system must be installed recessed to a largeextent because of structural conditions, the shaft systems of the ACOanti-flood protection systems can be retrofitted without problems withoptionally available extension pieces for recessed installation. In case ofneed, max. 2 extension elements can be put together with just a fewturns.

Sealing flange for pressurised waterIf the base plate must be protected against pressurised water, the shaftsystem can be equipped optionally with a sealing flange. This flange reli-ably protects the cellar against moisture from the ground. Chief attrac-tion: The flange is stepwise height-adjustable and thus makes perfectadaptation to local base plate level possible.

Adaptation to tile pattern and floor levelThe top section for load class K3 is continuously height-adjustable andinclinable. The position of the cover can thus be adapted to floor heightand tile pattern. A specially adjusted locking system in addition preventssmall children from removing the cover.

Multi option cover for customer-specific requirementsBoth sides of the cover can be used ad libitum. The massive side is aplastic cover. If, however, the cover is to form an optical unity with thelocally fitted tiles, the cover can be turned over and the tiles can be fitted.
