And wow, what a day it was! Michael is known as one of North America’s leading authorities on how to create more inspiring workplace environments. Healthy Workplace Summit 2015 Inspiring Workplaces: Creating Healthier & Happier Work Environments

The Healthy Workplace Initiative offered a full-day workshop featuring

Michael Kerr, in celebration of Healthy Workplace Month. And wow,

what a day it was! Michael is known as one of North America’s leading

authorities on how to create more inspiring workplace environments. His

goal during the day was to provide as much relevant, practical content

and inspiring ideas on how to build a fun, positive, high-performing

culture as possible, and he deliver those ideas in a fun (sometimes even

hilariously outrageous) way so the ideas stick. We heard clearly from

attendees that this goal was met and exceeded!

Also at the Summit, an important focus of the day was to recognize the

Healthy Workplace Champions for all of the great work they do to help

inspire healthier workplaces in their units and departments.

By all accounts the day was a rousing success. We have had great

feedback that the sessions resonated with those in attendance and left

a meaningful impression and lots of inspiration. Now we need to focus

on keeping this fantastic motivation going!

Michael has shared a wealth of follow-up resources including ideas,

tips, and key messages. We invite you to look through these resources,

share them with your colleagues, teams, manager, supervisor, etc. and

begin an ongoing conversation leading to action about how you can

help to make your workplace better - more inspiring, more rewarding,

more fun, a place where you want to be! Find them on the Healthy

Workplace InfoNet.

…for champions, by champions

Kaizen Promotion Office (KPO) Healthy

Workplace Board

Anyone in the department can post on our board, which has in

motion/physical activity and Healthy Workplace information,

websites and events, staff family photos, quotes, EFAP/Benefit info,

and social committee info. Some of what we have done to date

this year includes:

Entered a KPO team into the Mental Health and Addictions

Fun Run (Spring 2015).

Active volunteer Social Committee who plans fun get-

togethers [Family BBQ in the park, KaizenFest (Thanksgiving)

Lunch Potluck, Xmas party etc.] and organizes cards for

special occasions (collect a $20 fee/year to help with the

costs)

Stretches during the last step/discussion point of every

morning huddle

It was requested that we have a place to post

family/friend/travel pictures or art work or something we

want to share with our co-workers (since most of us don't

have an office and little desk or wall space of our own) -

hence the "Snapshots" section of our board

A few of us attend the noon-hour fitness classes together

Some of our QDSM metrics that tie into healthy workplace

include a psychological safety and journey of change

survey we populate every week and report on at Huddle,

and we go over points from the Respectful Workplace

document

Inspiring BETTER WORKPLACES ideas in action for healthier work environments

CHA

Workplace wellbeing relates to all aspects of your work life from the health and

safety of your physical and psychological environment to work life balance, to

opportunities for professional growth and development. Essentially it is how you feel

about your work and your workplace environment.

Everyday Lean Idea for the morning Huddle:

“We used to end the Huddles with the question

“Any Happy News?”. There was usually silence.

Now we’ve expanded that and end with “Triple

H News” – Happy, Healthy or Hooray (a shout

out to co-workers or great work done by teams

we are working with)” - Amanda Ror

Quarterly Update Summer 2015

Safer Every Day & You On September 15, Saskatoon Health Region launched its second 90-day initiative, dedicated to safety. For the next three months, staff and physicians will devote themselves to create and implement breakthrough safety approaches, based on data and evidence gathered over the summer months during a preparation period.

Our ultimate goal is to eliminate preventable harm by 2020. Safer Every Day is the first phase of our strategy that will help us achieve this goal. The safety of our patients, residents, clients and staff is our number one priority.

Psychological Safety

Employees who are physically and psychologically

healthy and safe and managers who are sensitive to

the impact of decisions on employee health have a

direct impact on the organization’s ability to deliver

exceptional care and service with patients at the

centre of care.

Psychological health and safety is foundational to all

of the safety initiatives within the current Hoshin. The

Psychological Safety and Staff Support team (Co-

leads: Dr. Malone Chaya, Donna Chalifoux, Beryl

Ludwig) is examining the impact that critical

incidents have on staff and physicians, and

identifying supports that will assist in building

resilience. If an employee cuts his or her hand we

apply first aid. How can we apply first aid to

emotional or psychological harm from events that

staff witness or experience?

Follow all teams and their progress on SHR’s external

website.

Psychological Health & Safety

Psychological health comprises our ability to

think, feel and behave in a manner that

enables us to perform effectively in our work

environments, our personal lives, and in society

at large. Psychological safety is different - it

deals with the risk of injury to psychological

well-being that an employee might

experience. Improving the psychological safety

of a work setting involves taking precautions to

avert injury or danger to employee

psychological health.

It is important to note that psychological health

problems occur on a spectrum, from mild

psychological difficulties on one end to severe

psychological disorders on the other. The most

common psychological health problems in the

workplace are anxiety and depression. These

conditions account for a large proportion of

the negative impacts on employees and

employers. - From Guarding Minds at Work

Active Healthy Workplace Month

In October, in motion highlighted Active Healthy

Workplace Month. We shared many pieces of

evidence, resources, ideas and tips throughout the

month and we have storified the information at

http://sfy.co/c0nyN

We also hosted our first-ever Twitter Chat which was all

about having a conversation about reducing sedentary

time during the workday. We had a number of

organizations participate and there were lots of ‘golden

nuggets’ shared about inspiring things happening to

encourage this and to create supportive

environments. The Twitter Chat can be found

at http://sfy.co/h1AWm

Multiple Perks of Reducing Sedentary Time at Work

Reducing sedentary time throughout your work day,

such as a quick 10 minute bout of physical activity, can

improve your focus, productivity, creativity, energy and

attitude as well as decrease levels of anxiety, depression

and increases self-esteem. Who doesn’t like that? Read

more.

In motion News

As part of the in motion Healthy Workplace Evaluation (HWE) free

learning sessions were offered at each of the six (6) participating

worksites. All individuals who participated in the first part of the HWE

were invited to attend one of the Healthy Workplace Learning

Sessions. Each Learning Session was facilitated by a qualified coach who

worked with participants to identify challenges that hinder/stop

participation in healthy behaviours as well as identify what is working

and other solutions to overcome the challenges.

Multiple holistic actions were identified to help promote a healthy

workplace culture within SHR. The summary of participant feedback

from the Learning Sessions suggested that supporting champions

throughout SHR who are helping to transform the workplace

experience by coordinating and conducting training sessions and

advocating for healthy workspaces is one way to start. Click here to

Learning Sessions to promote a healthy workplace.
