Fifth Anniversary for Reno, NV Employees from twelve different city departments took part in the Fifth Annual NAP Show in Reno. City Councilman, Dwight Dortch and Arts and Culture Manager, Christine Fey, were both on hand at the November 13th Awards Reception. Coordinator Stacey Spain said that, “the reception this year was the best ever and artists and their families appreciated being treated like the very important people they are!” This year’s exhibition was a huge success with participation increasing by more that 25%. We are thrilled with the work that Stacey has done over the last five years and are looking forward to continued growth in the years to come. Lexington, KY Drastically Increases Participation Only in their third year with the National Arts Program®, Lexington, KY managed to dramatically increase not only their participation, but the number of pieces on display. Compared to their 2009 exhibition, they increased their participation by 62% and the number of pieces by 67%. These are truly amazing statistics! The exhibition presented more than 170 pieces of artwork by 99 artists to the public. The show was once again held at ArtPlace, which houses a number of arts organizations including the Lexington Ballet, Lexington Philharmonic and Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, just to name a few. Coordinator Penny Ebel commented, “it is the perfect venue for our exhibit because of the many activities that take place in the building which allow many people to see the exhibit!” Congrats to Lexington on a great third year! New Orleans, LA Celebrates Five Years The fifth show for the City of New Orleans once again reflects this cities determination and courage. The Honorable Mayor Ray Nagin was the Master of Ceremonies, handing out awards to the winners. Mayor Nagin commented on the vast talent within the city and how he had been looking at the artwork on display the entire previous week. In addition to the standard awards, they also give out a Mayor’s Choice Award chosen by the mayor himself. This year’s Mayor’s Choice winner did an entire piece out of paint color strips that you receive at a paint store. Coordinator Asali Devon did another tremendous job. She even had last year’s teen winner give a speech on what the award meant to her (love this!). Attendees were also treated to refreshments and a photo opportunity with the Mayor. New Orleans is still working with 30% less people than they did pre Katrina, but continue to embrace the arts at all turns. It has been a vital part of their resurgence and the NAP is proud to be a part of it! Lexington, KY Drastically Increases Participation

Only in their third year with the National Arts Program®, Lexington, KY managed to dramatically increase not only their participation, but the number of pieces on display. For their fourth year with the NAP, Pinellas County decided to make a change in how they distributed their annual calendar. Instead of the usual printed calendar featuring the artwork of the year’s participants, they created an online version that can be downloaded and used as a wallpaper on your computer. Smooth Sailing for Austin, TX Coordinator April Sullivan put on another beautiful show this year. The seventh Annual NAP exhibit was once again displayed at the Mexican American Cultural Center with their awards reception marking the close of the show on January 15th. The exhibit looked extremely professional and was surely an amazing experience for all the artists that participated. April said, “everything went very smoothly and a great time was had by all!” Thank you to April and all who participated for another great year with the National Arts Program®!

A New Space for Buffalo, NY In their fourth year with the National Arts Program®, the City of Buffalo decided to move their exhibition to a new venue outside of City Hall. Artspace, the new exhibition space, provided a number of new opportunities, quoting Coordinator Celeste Lawson, “the new exhibition space offers better accessibility, professional lighting and

improved security for the artwork as well as provided the government with a chance to support the local arts community.” In attendance for the awards reception were Catherine Gillespie, Chair, and Emerson Barr, Director, of the Buffalo Arts Commission; Lynda Stephens, Chair,

and Susan Reinhardt, Vice President, of the Arts Council in Buffalo & Erie County.

Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare, LA Surveys Participants

This year, more than twenty different departments participated in the 2010 Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare’s Fourth Annual National Arts Program® exhibition. With more than 108 pieces on display at both the Cabrini Hospital and Rapides Regional Medical Center Galleries, Coordinator Judy Ginsburgh said, “this is some of the best artwork we have seen.” Judy also decided to distribute an optional survey to participants (great idea!) when they dropped off their artwork this year. The survery found that of the 64 participants, 24 of them were first time exhibitors and 90% of those who entered planned to attend the awards reception. In addition, the survey also revealed information regarding why participants entered this year as well as in previous years with popular answers being “it felt good to have my colleagues see what I do,” “I entered to have a place to show my art,” and “I participated to support Arts & Healthcare.”

Camden County, NJ Returns to their Roots After having their participation numbers drop last year, Camden County made a tremendous recovery. With a total of 207 artworks from 117 artists, their fifth year with the NAP was certainly a huge success. The show

once again returned to the Hopkins House Gallery. Gallery Coordinator, Bruce Garrity, handled the large task of strategically displaying all the beautiful artwork. The work was hung according to size, textures, coloring, contrast, style and category.

Coordinator Sandra Turner-Barnes commented that, “it was one of the most beautiful exhibitions she had ever had the pleasure of enjoying.” Sandra did a great job marketing the show this year and we are delighted with the response. We are all looking forward to year six with Camden County.

Seven Years Strong for Santa Rosa, CA Now in their seventh year, Santa Rosa continues to lead the way in handing out continuing education scholarships to their participants. Judges Jan Sofie and Alan Azhderian awarded 19 scholarships ranging from continuing education art courses at Santa Rosa Junior College to Somona State University to private instructions by local art professionals. All funds raised for these scholarships are matched by the National Arts Program® as part of our mission to help everyday people realize their artistic talent. Coordinator Tara Matheny-Schuster did another great job of organizing the exhibition which is displayed in two different facilities. Over 250 pieces of artwork, an increase from last year, were exhibited at both the Finley and Steele Lane Community Centers from February 1st through March 26th. We can’t wait to see what year eight brings!

Portland, ME Hosts Fourth NAP Show This was the fourth year for the National Arts Program® in Portland, Maine. The exhibit included 130 works of art from 96 artists. Many of these artists were first time participants in the program. The show was once again hung in City Hall and included a nice mix of artwork from

all categories. Coordinator Karen Seymour commented that, “the additional money offered by the NAP was a great help and added to the overall good feeling at the reception. When the concerned public asked who paid for the event, it was nice to say that the National Arts Program® had paid for it, along with the cash prizes.” The NAP is happy to know that the non-matching scholarship monies are such a great help for our cities.

Lubbock, TX Continues to Grow For twenty uninterrupted years, the City of Lubbock has hosted annual exhibitions of the National Arts Program®. One of our very first venues, Lubbock has grown with us. When they first started with NAP, we only had a handful of programs and still used a typewriter for entry forms! Today we have over 75 venues in more than 40 states. Even with the continued growth of the NAP over the years, shows like Lubbock maintain the opportunity for city employees and their family members to showcase their artistic talent. And this year was no different with 98 pieces of artwork on display at the Lubbock Municipal Garden & Arts Center from October 6th through 30th. We are excited that Lubbock continues to grow with the NAP!

Kudos to Charlotte / Mecklenburg, NC The City of Charlotte / Mecklenburg County show truly exemplifies the spirit of the National Arts Program®. This year, NAP staff members were able to attend the reception and presented Coordinator Mindy Levine with their Tenth Anniversary Award. They had over two hundred pieces of artwork beautifully

hung on two levels of the Government Centers grand lobby. Employees and all of their friends and family attended the reception, where officials representing all the organizations involved, took turns speaking about the positive nature of the show and art in their community. There were balloons, food, and a fantastic slide

show shown during the presentation. To top it all off, upon arrival each participant was given a name tag that proudly announced that they had participated in the show! Coordinator Mindy Levine and her team, did a fantastic job managing all aspects of the exhibit and the show came together beautifully.
