From the Desk of the Editors Dear Readers Charotar University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT) has been established by
promulgation of Gujarat Private University Act, 2009. It is empowered to confer degrees under Section
22 of UGC Act, 1956.
Presently, CHARUSAT offers 64 programs from UG to Ph D under the tutelage of 8 Institutes and 6
Faculties. They are in the allied disciplines of Technology & Engineering, Pharmacy, Computer
Applications, Management, Applied Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and other Paramedical Sciences.
All education programs are semester based and are delivered in English Medium. Credit and Grading
Systems are followed for Teaching, Learning and Evaluation. Curriculum and Pedagogy at CHARUSAT
correspond with societal needs. CHARUSAT strives to prepare students for global assignments. It
aims to make its students Job Creators and not Job Seekers.
The Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel believed, “Education without character is futile”.
CHARUSAT proudly follows the spirit. It also follows founding High Moral Values like Honesty,
Integrity, Transparency, Fairness, Equity, and Accountability.Efforts are also made for education
amelioration in rural schools through a Rural Education Development Program. There also exists
a Human Resource Development Centre to hone competencies of Faculty and Staff.
With a thrust on socially relevant Research and Development, CHARUSAT strives to transform the
society through creation, augmentation, dissemination and perpetuation of knowledge. For the
purpose, it has always remained engulfed in the events and activities leading to Research and
Development.
During the period, CHARUSAT Celebrated 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Shri
Ramakrishna Ashrama, Rajkot has transformed a bus into a vehicle named ‘Vivekananda Rath’
specially prepared to carry Swami Vivekananda’s message of nation-building and man-making to
remote corners of Gujarat. Further, National Symposium on ‘Technology in ELT: Challenges and
Remedies’ at Indukaka Ipcowala Institute of Management, CHARUSAT, Changa was organized on 23rd
November, 2013. Moreover, Charotar Institute of Physiotherapy had organized the 7th GUJSTATE
CONPHYCS’13 , a state level physiotherapy student conference, based on theme ‘Taking charge of
change’ Ignite, Innovate, Inculcate on 18th and 19th October 2013 focusing on implementation of
recent developments in the field of physiotherapy and stepping into the new era of physiotherapy
education, research and practice.
Present issue of the COMET presents these events and happenings in detail along with the News and
Events of the Institutes, Centres and Cells.
We hope the issue proves to be contently and gives you an interesting and insightful reading.

The Campus
The Kheda Jilla Madhyasth Sahkari Bank Ltd. – Nadiad at CHARUSAT
A branch of The Kheda Jilla Madhyasth Sahkari Bank Ltd. (KDCC) – Nadiad was inaugurated
at Charotar University of Science and Technology - CHARUSAT Campus, Changa on
Saturday, October 12, 2013.
Charotar University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT) believe in providing
maximum possible facilities for the benefits of its students. KDCC branch at CHARUSAT will
provide the facilities of opening saving account with zero balance for students and
RTGS/NEFT service throughout India. In addition, the parents of students (senior citizens)
will also get 0.50% more interest on Fixed Deposits along with many other benefits.
On the occasion, Dr. B G Patel, Provost, CHARUSAT congratulated and welcomed The Kheda
Jilla Madhyasth Sahkari Bank Ltd. (KDCC) – Nadiad at CHARUSAT Campus.
More than 5500 students are studying in various 49 academic programs at CHARUSAT. The
university is spread over 105 acres of land with world class teaching and learning
infrastructure which includes 24 hours Wi-Fi connectivity. CHARUSAT University aims to
be the world class university by proving best educational opportunities to students.
‘VIVEKANANDA RATH’ @ CHARUSAT Campus
On the occasion of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Shri Ramakrishna
Ashrama, Rajkot has transformed a bus into a vehicle named ‘Vivekananda Rath’ specially
prepared to carry Swami Vivekananda’s message of nation-building and man-making to
remote corners of Gujarat.
A statue of Swamiji in the meditation posture
is installed in the rear side of the bus. The bus
also carries an exhibition on the life and
teachings of Swamiji, Vivekananda literature,
audio-visual units to show documentary and
film on Swamiji and other necessary
accessories.
Monks of the Ashrama accompanied with
devotees and volunteers takes the Rath to
various places all over Gujarat. It visited Anand
district from 22nd September, 2013 to 27th September 2013.

‘VIVEKANANDA RATH’ arrived at CHARUSAT
Campus on 27th September 2013 (Friday) at
10 AM and it was welcomed by Dr. B G Patel,
Provost, CHARUSAT along with deputy
registrars of University Dr Harish Desai and
Shri H S Patel. Dr. Patel garlanded the statute
of Swamiji in Meditation placed on the Rath.
The Rath visited the 105 acres of lush green
campus. An Exhibition on the Life and Message of Swami Vivekananda was also on
displayed at Central Square, Ramanbhai Patel College of Pharmacy and on the spot Quiz
competition on the exhibition was conducted by Swamiji and Karyakartas from
Ramkrishna Ashram, Rajkot .
Also books on Swamiji’s ideas also were available for sale.
Students enthusiastically participated in this Rath Yatra, got inspired by Swami
Vivekanand’s youthful ideas. They thronged to visit the Exhibition.
VRUND 2013 celebrated at CHARUSAT on 18 October 2013
Charotar University of Science & Technology celebrated its annual garba Festival – VRUND
2013 on 18 October 2013 ( Sharad Purnima).
It was an evening where youth were dressed in traditional attire and flaunting new styles
of dancing and dressing. Students and faculty danced fervently on the Garba tunes.
VRUND 2013 was organized under guidance and support of Dr Niraj D Shah Convenor,
Central Committee, CHARUSAT and Principal, Chandubhai S Patel Institute of Technology
(CSPIT).

University Grant Commission (UGC) visit at CHARUSAT on 2 and 3 December 2013
The University Grant Commission (UGC), visited CHARUSAT campus for the inspection. The
visit of UGC team was schedule for two days, 2 and 3 December 2013.
During their two days visit, the UGC Expert team had meeting with students, staff (teaching
and non-teaching), alumni and management members of CHARUSAT.
Prof. J. S. Sandhu from Guru Nanak Dev University was the chairman of this visit and Prof.
Ramesh Arora from Management Development Academy was the member secretary for
this visit.

Seminar on Recent Trends and Issues in practical Data Mining @ CHARUSAT
U & P U. Patel Department of Computer Engineering and IEEE student branch at
CHARUSAT jointly organized an AICTE Sponsored two days National seminar on “Recent
Trends and Issues in Practical Data Mining” between Oct 18 and Oct 19, 2013. This event
brought together practitioners, students, developers and experts, who shared their
experiences and provide valuable insight into ways Data Mining can help in their practice!
In Data Mining (DM), many algorithms and models were presented recently in Data Mining
field to solve different problems. Most of the Data Mining algorithms presented have some
drawbacks like some of them are very time consuming and difficult to deal with due to the
impreciseness, uncertainty, and noisy data.
Quite a number of new theoretical and practical topics in data mining have been developed
over the years. Work on multimedia-data mining and applications in medicine, agriculture
as well as in security have been emerged.
This seminar was one of the leading events where students, practitioners and newcomers
in the field of data mining came together to share their ideas and discuss new trends in
Data Mining.
Besides that, newcomers in the field can get a fast introduction to Data Mining by working
with various Data Mining tools.
The main aim of the seminar was to provide insights and practice into the various Data
Mining tools.
This seminar provided a platform for exchange and dissemination of innovative, practical
development experiences. The seminar covered all aspects of data mining, including
algorithms, software and systems, and applications. By promoting novel, innovative

solutions to challenging data mining problems, the seminar sought continuously advance
the state-of-the-art in data mining.
Smt. Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel Institute of Computer Applications (CMPICA)
Seminar on “Integrated M.C.A & M.Sc (IT) programme, at CMPICA, CHARUSAT.
Smt. Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel Institute of Computer Applications, a constitute of
Charotar University of Science & Technology (CHARUSAT) had organized Integrated M.C.A
& M.Sc (IT)) Programme, which is a five year course directly offered after 12th standard
(Science and Commerce stream), on 24th November,2013. In this seminar total 226
students participated with their parents and teachers from 16 various schools and had
shown a tremendous response. In the seminar the students were exposed to broad range of
computer science and related fields. The program started at 10:00 am with brief
introduction to CHARUSAT University and various courses offered by the University as well
as the Institute. Details regarding the “Integrated M.C.A & M.Sc(IT)” programme were
discussed along with job and placement opportunities. After the introduction of University
& Institute, Principal Dr. Atul Patel had interaction with students about their career
guidance and gave them information about the Computer Applications and its usage in the
real world. Lunch was arranged by the institute for all the students, their parents and
teachers.

National Symposium on ‘Technology in ELT: Challenges and Remedies’ at Indukaka Ipcowala
Institute of Management, CHARUSAT, Changa
One-day National Symposium on Technology in
ELT: Challenges and Remedies was organized by
Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at
Indukaka Ipcowala Institute of Management
(I2IM), Charotar University of Science &
Technology, Changa on 23rd November, 2013. I2IM
offers professional programs – Ph D, MBA and
PGDM which are approved by AICTE. It also has
the patronage of IPCO Industries, Nadiad – a
business house of repute with its business
operated in USA.
The Symposium was organized with the prime
objectives of exploring the use of Technology
in facilitating English Language Teaching &
Learning and identifying and summarizing the
challenges raised while using varied web tools
for ELT. In all, 6 resource persons, 6
academicians of English from other states, 53
faculty members of English from Gujarat, and
27 students participated in the symposium.
The program started with the invocation to the
almighty. Shri Devang Joshi, Registrar, CHARUSAT welcomed participants and dignitaries
on the dais. He also gave a brief introduction of CHARUSAT. Then, Dr. Govind Dave, Dean,
Faculty of Management Studies and Principal, Indukaka Ipcowala Institute of Management

introduced and briefed present all about Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. He
further added that it is the matter of pride for the institute that we have arranged online
presentation of Dr. Eric Roth, American Language Institute, College of Letters, Arts, and
Sciences, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California through Skype as a part
of symposium.
The Symposium was formally inaugurated by dignitaries and experts by Lighting the Lamp.
Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Atanu Bhattacharya, Associate Professor, Central
University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar on “Technology as Practice: Instrumental and Social”.
Dilip Barad, Head, Department of English, MK Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar conducted
a demo workshop on “Remedy for the Challenge of Continuous Assessment in Large
Classes”. In the post lunch session, Dr. Eric Roth, delivered an online presentation through
Skype on “Flip Your Classroom: Deploy 'Search and Share' Homework Activities to Build
ELL Fluency” for one and half hour. In this online discussion, around 120 students of I2IM
participated with enthusiasm. In her deliberations Dr. Aarati Mujumdar, Assistant
Professor, Department of English, The M S University of Baroda, Vadodara focused on
“Integrating Technology with Critical Thinking: An Emerging Pedagogy”.
Finally, presentations and deliberations were followed by Panel Discussion on the central
theme of the Symposium “Technology in ELT: Challenges and Remedies”. The panel
discussion was chaired by Dr. Rajendrasinh Jadeja, Director, HM Patel Institute of English
Training and Research, Sardar Patel University, VV Nagar.
Alumni Meet-2013@Indukaka Ipcowala Institute of Management, CHARUSAT
A grand annual Alumni Meet organized at Indukaka Ipcowala Institute of Management
(IIIM), CHAROTAR UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (CHARUSAT) Changa on
December 22, 2013. I2IM, one of the leading institutes of CHARUSAT, offers programs – Ph
D, MBA and PGDM . It has the patronage of IPCO Industries, Nadiad and the business
operated in USA. Ipco is a corporate house of repute. More than 96 former students of the
institute participated in this mega-conglomeration.
The main motive behind this meet was to brief and constitute the Alumni Association of
I2IM as per University Norms. The event had provided a common platform to all the
students and alumni to interact, share, discuss, motive and get benefitted, to seek possible
avenues of collaboration with the industries and thereby looking for assistance in summer
internship and industrial training and exposure to real case studies at the organization of
repute. Apart from these objectives there were innovative activities like interaction among
foreign based alumni I2IMites and present students through online video-conference in
and movie screening for I2IMites. The aluminies expressed their heartfelt gratitude

towards the faculty members and the college, and shared their experiences of corporate
world with the students.
Dr. Govind Dave, Dean, Faculty of Management and Principal, I2IM, informed, “We have
initiated ‘Student Support and Progression Initiative (SSPI) and this Alumni Meet helped in
collecting information of I2Imites’ like personal profile, current employment and
entrepreneurial experiences. Moreover, it was a great opportunity for I2IM to rekindle
relationship with the alumni and connect them with institution and students. Such a meet
is a platform to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of all alumni of I2IM. ”

7th GUJSTATE CONPHYCS’13 was organized at CHARUSAT
Charotar Institute of Physiotherapy, a constituent of Charotar University of Science &
Technology (CHARUSAT) had organized the 7th GUJSTATE CONPHYCS’13 , a state level
physiotherapy student conference, based on theme ‘Taking charge of change’ Ignite,
Innovate, Inculcate on 18th and 19th October 2013 focusing on implementation of recent
developments in the field of physiotherapy and stepping into the new era of physiotherapy
education, research and practice.
The inaugural function started with prayer by Ms.SaloniMistry, student of CIP.
Dr.M. Balaganapathy (PT) gave the welcome address .The function was presided by
Shri.Surendra M.Patel, President, CHARUSAT & Kelavani Mandal and blessed the occasion.
Dr. Ali Irani, Head-Department of Physiotherapy, Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai and Former
Physiotherapist of Indian Cricket Team inaugurated the function on 18th October 2013 at
5:00 PM. Dr. M C Patel, Hon. Secretary, Matrusanstha, Kelavani Mandal and CHRF blessed
the conference as Guest of Honor. The Function was presided by Shri Surendra M Patel,
President, CHARUSAT and Kelavani Mandal.

Dr. Irani delivered a speech on
“Physiotherapy: Yesterday, Today and
Tomorrow”. Talking about futuristic
trends in Physiotherapy, Dr. Irani
emphasized upon the need for a
Physiotherapy Council in Gujarat.

CONPHYCS’13 gave overall summary of
the Conference and its theme. Mr.Vikas
Ratanpara, Student Organising Secretary,
CIP gave vote of thanks.
CONPHYCS’13 has organized total of 40 events which had various scientific, cultural and
sports events for creating augmentation to the physiotherapy students. There were about
1156 delegates and 22 colleges participating in
the conference.
There were around 10 scientific lectures in
various fields, taken by various expertise across
Gujarat and India. The conference had received
around 150 scientific papers; 9 cultural events in
on stage and off stage category like group dance,
carving, rangoli, photography etc… and 5 sports
events like carrom, table tennis, cricket, volley
ball for boys and girls. Newer events like Ad Mad Show, Youth Parliament, Fashion Show,
Double wicket cricket were introduced. Charotar Institute of Physiotherapy also had
participated and had won prizes in various events.
Dr. M M Prabhakar, Medical Superintendent, Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad & Director,
Governemnt Spine Institute, Physiotherapy & P. & O. College, Ahmedabad was the Chief
Guest for the Valedictory Function on 19th October 2013.. He gave away the prizes to the
winners from different colleges. He has appreciated the efforts of CHARUSAT management
for organizing a grand event. The overall championship trophy was also won by Charotar
Institute of Physiotherapy!

17th Annual National Conference of Nursing Research Society of India (NRSI) on
Epidemiology of Chronic Diseases: Nursing Research Perspective was organized at Manikaka
Topawal Institute of Nursing (MTIN), a constituent of Charotar University of Science &
Technology (CHARUSAT) on 25 to 27 October, 2013.
It was organized to stimulate nursing professionals and researchers regarding nursing
research aspect of chronic disease, to help the nurse practitioners to apply recent research
to treat chronic diseases and to prepare evidence based preventive and primitive strategies
for chronic disease.
The conference was inaugurated by Shri Nitinbhai Patel, Minister of Finance, Health,
Medical Education, Family Welfare and Transport on 25h October 2013. Dr. M C Patel, Hon.
Secretary, Matrusanstha, Kelavani Mandal and CHRF
blessed the Inaugural Function of the conference as
the Guest of Honor. The Function was presided over
by Shri Surendra M Patel, President, CHARUSAT and
Kelavani Mandal. The occasion was also graced by
Shri Naginbhai Patel, President, Matrusanstha and
CHRF, and Dr. B G Patel, Provost, CHARUSAT.
Ms. Jesuben Patidar, Registrar, Gujarat Nursing Council gave an inspirational speech to all
nursing professionals and researchers. Dr. Usha Ukande, President, NRSI, Dr. B G Patel,
Provost, CHARUSAT and Ms. Vimalben Patel, Director, MTIN also addressed the august
audience. Lastly, vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Deepak Krishnamurthy.

Human Resource Development Centre HRDC
Attitudinal Change Training Programme for Non-Teaching Staff, was organized CHARUSAT
HRDC organized Attitudinal Change Training Programme at CHARUSAT Campus from 12th
to 23rd November, 2013 for non teaching staff. The resource person was Sandeep Savant
from Catalyst, Baroda. 108 non-teaching staff had attended the training programme. The
participants were divided into five different batches. Training programme was spread over
a span of ten days. First Batch on 12th&13th November, Second Batch on 14th&15th

The main objectives of the programme were
Awareness of various aspects of Personality
Understanding more in detail of FIRO-B
Understanding nuance of Teams and one’s own behavior pattern in team
Importance of Visitor or customer in the campus
Importance of Communication
These different objectives were explained through Administration of Test, Team Games,
Screening of films, Role play and Case study.
In first day Understanding of Interpersonal relationship need and Team Traits in dealing
with people were explained through game. The participants were made to understand the
importance of being a good team player and importance of Interpersonal relationship.
The participants were also made to undergo
FIRO-B test to understand the interpersonal
behavior. It gave the Participants an insight
into One’s own style of functioning at
Interpersonal level and understanding of the
need of self and others. Team Games were
played which reinforced the participants
understanding about the various roles in a
team and how to be a better team player and
to understand one’s own behavior in Teams
and approaches to change the behavior.
Through Role plays and screening of video
participants were made to understand the good practices to be adopted towards the
visitors in the campus, and to treat every individual with respect. The different perspective
of people for a particular situation and mind set were explained.

Understanding various types of Communication, barriers of communication, Listening
skills were explained through Case Study, Role Play and games. The importance of body
language, listening and verbal skills of Communication were emphasized and explained to
the participants.

Training Programme on Interactive Pad
Training programme for interactive board was scheduled on November 28th, 2013 for
teaching staff of CHARUSAT University with the Co-ordination of HRDC. The Resource

person was Pratisk Bansal from Bansal Audio Visual System Ltd. Twenty five Faculty
members representing their institute had attended the programme. This Programme was
held to make the faculties aware of the usage of the interactive pad for further use as a tool
of teaching method.
