NEW NAME There are many new and exciƟng changes happening at The Campus School. For starters, the name of the school has been changed to reflect our laboratory school status. The new name is The Campus Laboratory School of Carlow University (CLS). We are working closely with the EducaƟon Department of the University to ensure that the CLS students and the University students can learn from each other. AddiƟonally, we are trying to build a greater brand awareness and will be updaƟng our logo, image and brand idenƟty as a 21 st Century Thriving School. Stay tuned for more informaƟon. ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES Former ExecuƟve Director, Tawana Cook Purnell, stepped down from her posiƟon at The Campus School and Early Learning Center on November 26, 2018, to tend to family obligaƟons. A naƟonal search is underway for a new Head of School for The Campus Laboratory School who will report to the newly appointed ExecuƟve Director. The goal is to have the permanent replacement by July 1, 2019. In the interim, Michele R. Atkins is serving as the Head of School through the remainder of the 18/19 school year. Michele served for ten years on Carlow’s Board of Trustees, including terms as both board chair and vice chair. She is an experienced, giŌed administrator, having served as ExecuƟve Director of the Heritage 4 Kids Preschool, Apraxia Kids and Shady Lane School. Dr. Keely Baronak, Chair of EducaƟon Department at Carlow University, will assume the addiƟonal responsibility of ExecuƟve Director of The Campus Laboratory School, effecƟve July 1, 2019. In this capacity, she will report directly to the Provost and is currently heading a naƟonal search for a new Head of School for CLS. ALUMNI HALL OF FAME Become a CLS Hall of Famer! We are creaƟng an "Alumni Hall of Fame" on the first floor of the school to show prospecƟve CLS parents and Alumni the boundless potenƟal garnered from receiving a Campus Lab School EducaƟon. Sister Mary Paul was a heavenly soul placed here on earth to impact the lives of all she touched and she succeeded. Her legacy is found in the number of successful people like you who are doing extraordinary things in this region. As the founder of Mount Mercy Campus School of Carlow University, which has since become The Campus Laboratory School, the impact of Sister Mary Paul’s life has leŌ a lasƟng legacy on those whom she taught, mentored or met. As we conƟnue to receive tributes in her memory, one senƟment is resoundingly clear…. Sister Mary Paul has leŌ a permanent fingerprint on the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Because of the overwhelming outpouring of love for Sister Mary Paul and in honor of her legacy, The Campus School is iniƟaƟng a $5.5 million “Thriving School” Capital and Endowment Campaign to provide capital improvements and 21 st century technological upgrades that will foster the school’s academic excellence in perpetuity. It is our intenƟon to name the school Library in her honor. What’s New at Your Alma Mater!

Where are They Now?

 

          Mary Murphy Kiernan is the Co‐Founder and President of  Actual Size Crea ve, a branding and digital design agency in Pi sburgh. She and her husband Bob founded Actual Size to focus on issue advocacy and corporate communica ons.  

Since 1990, Mary’s career has centered around issue            advocacy, corporate communica ons, poli cs and                 government. She began her career working in an adver sing agency then transi oned to Press Secretary and eventually Administra ve Assistant for U.S.          Congressman Ron Klink.   

Mary has two sons, both of whom a ended and        graduated from The Campus Lab School. 

High School A ended: Sacred Heart in Shadyside

College A ended: Penn State University  

Currently Resides: Squirrel Hill, PA

Hobbies/Interests: Cooking, politics, equestrian and music

Favorite Vaca on Spot: Anywhere that my husband and boys are

Dr. Horner has been the Execu ve Director of Strong Women, Strong Girls in Pi sburgh (A na onally     

recognized mentoring program for elementary school girls) since July 2017.  She earned two bachelor’s degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Sociology and a Bachelor of Philosophy honors degree from the University of Pi sburgh. She also holds a Master’s degree in Geography and            Environment from the London School of Economics, and received her      doctorate in Social Work from Tulane University’s City, Culture and        Community program.

My experience at The Campus School is one I will never forget. Not only did I gain a remarkable       

educa on that has allowed me to gain all honors in high school, I also met a second family of some of my closet and best friends. The teachers at the School allowed me to express my thoughts and opinions freely which helped me to become a public speaker. The camaraderie between        students can be felt throughout the halls and the intellect of each person radiates in the classrooms. I am very proud to be able to call myself a Campus School Alum! 

 

  I plan to a end Oakland Catholic High School. 

My future aspira ons are to either con nue in the science and             mathema cs field to become an Aeronau cal Engineer at NASA or to   become a Civil Rights A orney.
