In April 2010, HFHSA
launched the new look
HFHSA web site and shortly
afterwards linked the site to
social media pages, Face
Book, Twitter, Flickr and
others.
Our goal has been to provide
multiple media channels
through which we can share
what is happening in the
various projects around the
country and provide feed-
back on what happens with
the funding raised by our
donors and sponsors. In addi-
tion, e-news updates and e-
newsletters provide informa-
tion on building opportuni-
ties for our many volunteers
who participate in builds and
national events. HFHSA is
extremely proud to announce
that our web site was se-
lected at the recent SAN-
GONeT conference 2010
„Fundraising in The Digital
World‟ as a winner in this
years competition category
„Best Use of Website for
Online Fundraising‟.

HFHI Shelter
Report
The report is an
initiative by HFHI
in recognition of
World Habitat Day
(October 4th) to
advocate the link
between Health
and Housing.
“Shelter plays a
critical role not
only in the health
of individual fami-
lies but in the well-
being of communi-
ties and ultimately
our larger global
connection,” says
Jonathan Reck-
ford , CEO HFHI
It‟s again that time of the year when many volunteers put away their laptops, leave the filing and
switch off the cell phones. November is National Corporate Blitz Build time and teams from com-
panies around South Africa will instead of working at the office, be donning their overalls, work
boots, gloves and hard hats to instead build houses for families currently living in poverty housing.
The event will be hosted from 22—26 November and houses will be built in three provinces simulta-
neously.
With Christmas around the corner, some teams choose to have a Habitat build instead of the usual
Christmas party and they elect to use the money set aside for a party to provide a roof over the heads
of a family in need...what a blessing!
So, if you and your work colleagues would like to join in the Corporate Blitz Build 2010, all the infor-
mation on the event including costs, can be accessed through the following link National Corporate
Blitz Build 2010. Download the flyer and share with friends and work colleagues. To book a place
for your teams please email Peter Francis [email protected]

Desmond Tutu Building on Faith Event
Beneficiary Focus DTBOF2010
Focus on Umgababa—KZN The Umgababa project is situ-
ated along the South Coast
stretching from near Mariann
Hill in Pinetown right down
the South Coast to Umgababa.
Road access to the construc-
tion sites is typically a mixture
of dirt and basic tar roads.
During 2006/2007 a number
of families living in the
Umgababa area approached
Habitat for Humanity South
Africa requesting housing
assistance. The families were
typically low income-earners
who under the project selec-
tion criteria process would
generally qualify for housing
based on HFHSA‟s Enhanced
Peoples Housing Process
model, (the previous Save &
Build model). After consulta-
tion with the families advising
them on the Save & Build
model and its methodology,
HFHSA achieved a resound-
ing „buy-in‟ from the commu-
nity.
In 2007, the eThekwini Mu-
nicipality approached HFHSA
to request assistance in pro-
viding housing solutions for
vulnerable groups living in
inadequate shelter in the rural
wards of their municipal ar-
eas. The municipality was
rolling out expanded public
works programmes in 10 rural
wards of the municipality and
wanted the HFHSA housing
programme to form part of
their integrated development
plans for the areas. The first
ward, where the municipal
programme has been rolled
out was Ward 99 which en-
compasses the Umnini/
Umkomaas/Umgababa area.
To date, a total of 70 houses
have been constructed in
wards 98, 99 & 100.

Bringing Hope
Mr. Bethway Wiso Tokwe is a 47 year old man who lives with his wife, Lindelwa Tokwe in
Mfuleni. The couple have been married since 1997. They have a daughter Mandisa, who stays in
the Eastern Cape with the rest of their family. Mandisa is 24 years old.
Mr. Tokwe is unemployed but his wife, Lindelwa is working as a waitress in a restaurant in Cape
Town. The couple were extremely excited when they heard they had been selected to participate
by building their new home as part of the Desmond Tutu Building on Faith event. Mr Tokwe said,
“Owning our very own home will indeed be such a blessing for us and we want to thank all the
volunteers who have made our dream possible. Also thank you to the staff from Habitat for Hu-
manity who have worked so hard to bring hope to so many families in Mfuleni”.
At the conclusion of our annual DTBOF 2010 event, hosted in September, we once again
bore witness to the power of God working through ordinary people to transform and change
lives. Not only were the lives of our new homeowners changed, for the first time having a
decent place to call home, but also those of the volunteers whose hearts were irrevocably
changed.
The power of giving should never be underestimated. Many volunteers attested to the fact
that they went away being more blessed and having received much more than they gave.
HFHSA salutes our donors and volunteers who partner with us to help us in our vision of
changing and transforming lives and restoring the hope and dignity of those who have been
trapped and imprisoned by poverty. But ultimate glory goes to God without whom we are
unable to function and be all that we can be. To His glory, during the build 11 families were
housed as local and international Christian groups worked together as a team to demonstrate
the love of Christ to these poverty stricken communities. We continue to work towards a
world where every person has a decent place to live and we hope next year you will join us!
Habitat Volunteers Down Tools to Put Out Shack Fire

It was day one of the Desmond Tutu
Building on Faith (DTBOF) event,
Monday 13th September and the
ambitious energy was palpable
throughout the Mfuleni community
in Cape Town. It turned out that a
team of students and their most
radical and enthusiastic chaplain,
“Jules” from Trinity College Dub-
lin, joined forces with volunteers
from St James Church Kenilworth,
to build a house together.
This magnificent team of young
blood from Ireland were an inspir-
ing force to be reckoned with as
they battled a shack fire. To read

Shack Fires claim
hundreds of lives
each year in South
Africa. Loss of shel-
ter, belongings and
important docu-
ments add to the
trauma and loss.
The United Nations designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat
Day. The idea is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all, to
adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for
the future of the human habitat.
The United Nations chose the theme Better City, Better Life to highlight our collective
vision of a sustainable urban world that harnesses the potential and possibilities, mitigates
inequalities and disparities, and provides a home for people of all cultures and ages, both
rich and poor.

The work and mission of
Habitat for Humanity would
not be possible without the
donations, sponsorships and
volunteer labour of our many
supporters both in South Af-
rica and overseas.
There can be nothing more
moving than handing over the
keys for a new home and a
new future to a family who
have spent their lives living
in poverty housing. I don‟t
believe we can begin to com-
prehend the power of the
love, caring and compassion
you have shown in serving
HFHSA beneficiaries.
