Being among the Top 200 QS World University Subject Rankings, six yearsearlier than theprojected timeline, is truly a celebratedmoment for theUniversity.Considering the ranking criteria, the reasons for the position attained, above all,hingeonthestrengthofourextremelyinfluentialresearchqualityandresults,andtheperformanceofourgraduatesamongsttheemployers.

Theaccomplishmentaptlyechoedthetheme“TowardsaDistinctiveReputation”thatanchoredFinancialYear2013performance.TheUniversityhasshownanall-roundachievementsatvarious fronts–academic, research, innovation,collaboration,artandculture,sportsandcorporatesocialinvestments.

WiththeappointmentofYBhgPuanRaihaAzniAbdRahman,SeniorVice-Presidentof the Group Human Resource Management (GHRM) as Chairman of InstituteTechnologyofPETRONASon1December2013,theboardthatgovernsUTP,it ishopedthatthetrajectoryforexcellencecouldbeenhancedinrealisingitsvisionandmission.

News and stories in this quarter had only reaffirmed the University’s commitmentand focus. The highlights included Centralized Analytical Laboratory (CAL) beingendorsed by Standards Malaysia, UTP securing TechnoFund by MOSTI worthRM1.13million andMOUswithNational Colleges of Technology (KOSEN), JapanandNanoMalaysiaBerhad.Also,UTP’sMBA-EnergyManagementprogrammehasalsosteppedintothesecondeditionwith13scholarsregisteredintotheprogramme.

OnCSRfront,theUniversityoptimiseditsresourcesinimprovingthequalityoflifeofthesurroundingcommunitywithitsICTmodulesandprogrammes.Incollaborationwith Parent-Teacher Association of SK Sultan Yussuf, Batu Gajah, a programmewasdesignedandorganisedtofacilitatechildren’sassimilationtotheworldofwebincludingthechallengesthatcomewiththeaccessibilityoftheinternet.

Itwasabusyquarter,asofbefore.WerememberaquotebyT.SElliot,“Thehistoricalsenseinvolvesaperception,notonlyofthepastnessofthepast,butofitspresence”.Ilookforwardtomorequarterswithmoreexcitingeventsandnews.

UTP in the Top 200 QS World University Subject RankingsUniversiti Teknologi PETRONAS make it to the top 200 in theQuacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject(ChemicalEngineering).

This outstanding achievement indicated that UTP has reached itsobjectivetobeinthetop200WorldUniversityRankingsinChemicalEngineering,muchearlier thantheuniversityhasplanned.BasedonUTP’s30-yearaspirationroadmap,thisfeatisonlytobeachievedintheyear2020.

QS formulates the World University Ranking by Subject based ontwo important criteria which are research quality and graduatesemployability.

In the assessment process, QS accesses three extensive datasetswhich are the global academic and employer reputation surveys,andtheScopusdatausedforthecitationsperpaperindicatorintheoverall QSWorldUniversity Rankings. These three components arecombinedtoproducetheresultsoftheQSWorldUniversityRankingsbySubject,withweightingsadaptedbydiscipline.

Global academic reputationQS’sglobalsurveyofacademicshasbeenthecenterpieceoftheQSWorldUniversityRankings.In2014,resultswerebasedonresponsesfrom 62,000 academics worldwide. Having provided their name,contact details, job title and the institution where they are based,respondentsidentifythecountries,regionsandfacultyareasthattheyhavemostfamiliaritywith,anduptotwonarrowersubjectdisciplinesinwhichtheyconsiderthemselvesexpert.Foreachofthe(uptofive)

faculty areas they identify, respondents are asked to list up to 10domesticand30internationalinstitutionsthattheyconsiderexcellentforresearchinthegivenarea.Theyarenotallowedtoselecttheirowninstitution.

Global employer reputationThe QS World University Rankings are unique in incorporatingemployability as a key factor in the evaluation of internationaluniversities.Theemployerreputationsurveyworksonasimilarbasistotheacademicone,onlywithoutthechannellingfordifferentfacultyareas. Employers are asked to identify up to 10 domestic and 30internationalinstitutionstheyconsiderexcellentfortherecruitmentofgraduates.Theyarealsoaskedtoidentifyfromwhichdisciplinestheyprefertorecruit.Afterexaminingwherethesetwoquestionsintersect,QScaninferameasureofexcellenceinagivendiscipline.

Citations per paperFor the purpose of the QS World University Rankings by Subject,QS under citations per paper rather than per facultymember. Boththe minimum publications threshold and the weighting applied tothe citations indicator are adapted in order to best reflect prevalentpublicationandcitationpatternsinagivendiscipline.AllcitationdataaresourcedfromScopus,theworld’smostcomprehensiveresearchcitationsdatabase.Asof2013,ascorebasedon‘h-index’hasbeenaddedtotheQSWorldUniversityRankingsbySubject.Theh-indexisawayofmeasuringboththeproductivityandimpactofthepublishedworkof a scientist or scholar. The index isbasedon the setof thescientist’smostcitedpapersandthenumberofcitationsthatshe/hehasreceivedinotherpublications.

This accomplishmentmarked another significantmilestone for UTP.Only17yearssinceitsestablishment,theUniversityhasprogressivelydevelopedintooneofthetop200universitiesintheworld,andisontrackonbecomingarecognisedresearchuniversity.

Soft Launch of World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress 2014 (ESTCON 2014)R&D experts from around the world together with government andindustry players looking to determine amore sustainable future willconverge at World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress2014(ESTCON2014)from3to5June2014.

ESTCON 2014 themed “Engineering, Science, Technology andHumanities:ConvergenceforaSustainableFuture”isexpectingmorethan 1,400 participants from over 50 countries with an expectedturnout of 3,000 crowd from universities, corporations and publicduringthecongress.UTPisorganisingthiscongress,deemedasoneof the largestworld congressesMalaysia has ever hosted, atKualaLumpurConventionCentre.

The 3-day congress will present and share ideas through 9simultaneouslyheldconferences,exhibitions,innovationpitchingandnetworkingactivitieswithanobjectiveofbridgingideastothemarket.

ESTCON2014 is oneof thepremierR&Dconferences in theAsianregion and to date has more than 1,000 confirmed registereddelegates.Organisedsince2010,thisbiennialeventhasemphasisedthe importance of innovation, creativity and commercialisationand continuing in this tradition, ESTCON 2014 has introduced anew section on Innovation Pitching to facilitate commercialisationopportunities. It is a platform that creates opportunities to bridgethe gap between R&D and commercialisation to further drive thepushtowardsdevelopingan innovation-ledeconomy. It isdedicatedto providing collaborative opportunities between private sector,governmentandresearchersto leveragetheircombinedexpertisetorealisehigherqualityresearch,industrydesiredsolutionsandstrategicnationalobjectives.

According toDatuk Ir (Dr) AbdulRahimHashim, ViceChancellor ofUTP, the InnovationPitching sessionsallows inventors topitch theirnew technologies to potential investors. This will take ESTCON2014 to the next level as it connects researchers and inventorsto the right investors and business partners, at the same timecreating opportunities to increase university revenues and createnew job opportunities in an innovation driven economy throughcommercialisationofR&D.

The congress is not just for academics, but a collaboration withindustry and government agencies that deliver ideas to themarket.With such collaborations, participants can earn up to 20 CCDhours and 18 CPD hours from Construction Industry DevelopmentBoardMalaysia andBoard forEngineersMalaysia respectively for acontinuousprofessionalismdevelopment.

This congress is timely, especially in light of the Malaysiangovernment’seffortstomakeMalaysiaaneducationhubintheregion.ItalsosupportsthecauseofYayasanUTP(UTPFoundation)thatwasestablishedin2007topromoteandfurtherthecauseofeducationinMalaysia.ESTCON2014 isalsosupportedbyMinistryofEducation(MOE), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI),AgensiInovasiMalaysia(AIM),KPerakandYayasanUTP.

Speaking at a press conference after the Soft Launch, Mr MarkRozario,CEOofAgensi InovasiMalaysia (AIM),alsoannouncedthatAIMhasset-upofanofficeinUTPcampus.ThisisthefirstofitskindintheregionandthefirststepinachievingAIMsobjectiveofexpandingitsfootprintinmajorregionsandStatesinMalaysiatodriveitsvisionofcreatinganinnovation-ledeconomy.

As UTP places strong emphasis on R&D, the collaboration willstimulate and enhance the innovation sector in the region. ThispartnershipwillenableAIM’sInnovationBusinessOpportunities(IBO)team to consult and assist UTP researchers to commercialise theirinventions, at the same time allowing them the use of a dedicatedspacetoconductmeetingswithcompaniesandentrepreneursbasedinPerak.ThisallowsAIM’sstafftobridgetheindustry-academiagapandunderpinAIM’spresencewithintheuniversityandintheregion.

Leadership and business sustainability go hand in hand. PETRONAS believesthat business sustainability rely on effective leadership. Hence, PETRONAS iscommittedtonurturingtalentsanddevelopingleaderstoserveitsdiversebusinessportfolios. This is the first interviewwith Puan Raiha Azni Abd Rahman, SeniorVice-President of the Group Human ResourceManagement (GHRM), since herappointmentasChairmanofInstituteTechnologyofPETRONAS–theboardthatgovernsUniversitiTeknologiPETRONAS(UTP)–on1December2013.

Propelledby itsvisiontobecomea leadingoilandgasmultinationalofchoice,PETRONASstrivestobalancebusinessexcellencewithitsobjectivetocontributetothewell-beingofthepeopleandthenationwhereveritoperates.Anchoredonthisanditscommitmenttohumancapital development, UTP was established in 1997 to develop acompetentandskilledtalentbaseforPETRONASanditshostnationsoverseas, particularly in the field of science and technology for thepetroleumindustry.

Energy remainsakeydriving force foroverall economicgrowthandresources are becoming more diversified in the coming years as aresultofrenewableenergydevelopment.Hence,possessing skilled and knowledgeable talents,as well as effective leaders in this industryamidst the challenging global environment arecrucialthaneverbefore.

PETRONAS, as Puan Raiha proudly stated,todayisplacedsixth intheglobalrankingofoiland gas (O&G) firms in 2013,which is toppedby super-majors such as Shell, Chevron andExxonMobil. It has business presence in 50countries spreading over five continents.Therefore, PETRONAS puts high focus ondevelopment of its talents to ensure that itsassetsaremanagedsafely,reliablyandefficientlyindeliveringtheintendedbusinessresults.

In this context, the University has been instrumental and effective.The students have been developed to be equipped with industryrequirements.Thecurriculumandtheinternshipprogrammesproviderequiredfoundationforstudentstoassimilateintotheindustry.Beingpart of PETRONAS also means that the faculty members and thestudents have access to learn from PETRONAS’ latest technologyand industry’s trends andpractices. The studentswould be familiarwith thechallengesof the industry.Upon their finalassessmentand

graduation, they could fit almost instantaneously into the industrybecausethestrongUniversityfundamentalshavepreparedthemwell.

When the graduates move on to PETRONAS, the assessment stillcontinues. The development of PETRONAS’ technical professionalssuchasengineersandtechnicalspecialistsareachievedthroughskillgroups assigned for the specific engineering/technical discipline. IfatUTP,thelecturersprovidetheneededguidanceandfacilitation,atPETRONAS, theSkillGroupAdvisors assistedby Technical Expertsaretheonestolendtherequiredsupport.ThisservesasabenchmarktomonitorcompetencyandreadinessofPETRONAS’talents.

Interestingly, Puan Raiha said that Datuk Ir(Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, UTP’s VC wasinstrumentalintheestablishmentofthissystemtoidentifyandmatchthetalentsforleadershiproles in PETRONAS. The structure enablesPETRONAS tomanage its 46,000 employeesglobally and identifying talents for businesstasksandassignments.

To date, PuanRaiha said thatUTPgraduateshave been absorbed into various sectorswithPETRONAS and its subsidiaries. Many haveassumed middle-management positions withassignments including overseas ventures. Thegraduates during their University years haveembraced PETRONAS’ shared values and

those values continue to guide them in their transitional years asPETRONAS’employees.

“We believe in ‘growing our own timber’, not just for PETRONAS,butalsofortheindustry”forthennotonlydowedevelopanykindofleaders,butleaderswithintegritywhoupholdPETRONAS’corporatephilosophy and values, the same philosophy and values that havemadePETRONASsustainableandstrongforthepast40years.

To date, Standards Malaysia has accredited 632 laboratories forvarious types of testing and calibration where 16 laboratories arefromhighereducation institutions.More than200assessors/expertsfrom various fields under Standards Malaysia are supporting itsaccreditationservicestofullfilltheinternationaltechnicalrequirements.

“With a vision to become a leader in technology education andcentre for creativity and innovation, the university has progressivelydevelopedintooneofthetopuniversitiesinMalaysiaoveraveryshortspanoftime.Itisourprioritytoensurethatouracademicprogrammesconformto internationalstandardsandmeettheexpectationsoftherelevant industries by taking important strategic development andqualityassurancemeasures,”saidDatukIr(Dr)AbdulRahim.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) also formulate plans andstrategies to ensure effective laboratory teaching and learningprocesses, research, consultancy and development activities forstudents and staff through provision of adequate, reliable and wellmaintained engineering laboratory equipment, facilities and utilitiesthat comply with relevant authority rules and regulations as well asconformtointernationalstandards.ThisisevidentwhenitsCentralizedAnalytical Laboratory (CAL) and Control and InstrumentationLaboratoryreceiveaccreditationfromStandardsMalaysia.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS’ Centralized Analytical Laboratory(CAL) and Control and Instrumentation Laboratory have beenrecognisedforitscalibrationandtestingbyStandardsMalaysia.

Bothlaboratories,whichhavebeenattestedasmeetinginternationalstandards,wereconferred theMS ISO/IEC17025:2005certificationby Madam Fadilah Baharin, Director General of Department ofStandardsMalaysia(StandardsMalaysia)toYBhgDatukIr(Dr)AbdulRahim Hj Hashim, Vice Chancellor, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS(UTP)atapresentationceremony,heldatUTPon20February2014.The laboratories were accredited under Laboratory AccreditationSchemeofMalaysia(SAMM),astheynotonlymeetbothtechnicalandmanagementrequirementsfortestingandcalibrationcompetency,butalsooperateinaccordancewithMSISO9001,QualityManagementSystems.

“CongratulationstoUTPwhichnowhasthreeaccreditedlaboratoriesunder Standards Malaysia. As education is becoming an emergingareaoffocusinthestandardisationarena,itisimportanttoinstillqualityintheireverydaylearnings.AccreditationofInstituteofHigherLearning(IHL) laboratories is a demonstration of the importance of qualitythroughcompliancetostandards,”saidFadilahattheceremony.

The accreditation also endorses both Laboratories’ well-trainedpersonnel, equipment formeasurement of traceability andmethodsoftestingtowardsaccurateandcredibletestingandcalibrationdata.Furthermore, accreditation is part of a quality infrastructure thatfacilitatestradeandpromotesglobalcompetitiveness.

Endorsements on the University’s expertise, performance and capabilitiesDuring the quarter, the University boasted several milestones resulting from endorsement on its expertise, performance and capabilities. Standards Malaysia recognised CAL’s calibration and testing capabilities while MOSTI through its TechnoFund rewarded the University with RM1.13 million worth of grant, the highest amount thus far for research. Malaysia International Technology Expo also endorsed the University’s innovation with 3 golds, 4 silvers and 6 bronzes, in addition to 2 special recognition mentions.

Achievements

TechnoFund is a grant schemewhich aims to stimulate the growthandsuccessful innovationofMalaysianenterprisesby increasingthelevelofR&Danditscommercialisation.Theschemeprovidesfundingfortechnologydevelopment,uptopre-commercialisationstage,withthe commercial potential to create new businesses and generateeconomicwealthforthenation.

The award is for UTP’s research project titled “Rescue-IMonitoringSystem”ledbyAssocProfDrAhmadKamilMahmood,Dean,FacultyofScienceandTechnologyUTP,withDrHanitaDaud,AssocProfDrJafreezal Jaafar, Ir Dr NursyarizalMohdNor, Assoc Prof Dr IrraivanElamvazuthi, Azwin Azrina Ahmad and Ruzaini Rahmad as the keyresearchers.

The project is about equipping fire-fighters with IT gadget duringfire breakouts operation. The gadget comprises of four in-housedevelopedpatentsatUTPnamelythephysiologymonitor, integratedtransceiver,breathingairleveltransmitterandportablecontrolunit.Theintegrationofthegadgetsformsanewandnovelintegratedsystemasan innovative solution for rescuers – firstof its kind inMalaysiaandASEANcountriesatcompetitiveprice.

RM1.13 million for “Rescue-I Monitoring System”

Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) Perak has been supportiveof this project since its inception,whereBOMBAPerak has playedavitalrole inprovidinguserrequirements,conductingfieldtestsandobtaining internationalcertification.Assuch,thegadgetwillnaturallyqualifyasapotentialmarketand itcouldbefurtherextendedtothewholeofMalaysiaandabroad.

The project is a result of concerted efforts and smart partnershipsbetweenAssocProfDr AhmadKamil, his team andmemberswithSemarakMotivasiSdn.Bhd.

With this achievement, it has demonstrated UTP’s continuouscommitment in research,developmentand innovation in linewith itsaspirationtobecomeareputableresearchuniversity.

Apart fromUTP,MOSTIalsoawardedfundstotallingRM2.82millionmillion tofiveother recipientsnamelyAquatechBioResourcesSdn.Bhd.(TechnoFund),UniversitiSainsMalaysia(ScienceFund),UniversitiPutraMalaysia(ScienceFund),SIFTCenterSdn.Bhd.(InnoFund)andMohamadRizviOthman(InnoFund).

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) emerged as champion andbagged twootherprizes for theuniversity category in theDis.Rupt.EducompetitionheldatUTPfrom15to16January2014.Dis.Rupt.Edu is an application development competition, or better knownas “Startup”,which emulates the famous TechCrunch in theUnitedStates.Theeventwasheldforthefirsttimein2012atSEGiUniversity.

The three top teams fromUTPwere Stutter Aid, Diversity and TheVictory. As champion, Stutter Aid walked away with a replica cup,RM5,000.00 and an all-expenses-paid trip to TechCrunch DisRupt2014,SanFranciscoUSA,worthmore thanRM20,000.00.Thefirstrunner-upwenttoDiversitywinningRM3,000.00andaplaque,whilethesecondrunner-upbelongedtoTheVictory,winningRM2,000.00andaplaque.

Forthejunior’scategory,IntanGeniusofSMKTengkuAmpuanIntan,TerengganuwasannouncedthechampionwinningRM1,000.00anda plaque, the first runner-upwent to Excelsior, SMKSultan Yussuf,PerakreceivingRM750.00andaplaquewhilethesecondrunner-upprizeofRM500.00andaplaquewenttoSMK(FELDA)BandarBaruSerting,NegeriSembilan.

The key aims of the Centre is to be the catalystto encourage lecturers to be innovative in designing flexiblemodelsof learning, and provide promotion pathways which can lead toprofessorship for lecturers who have developed innovative teachingandlearningmethodsandshownexcellenceinteaching.TheCETaLtask force was formed to spur this initiative, and preparations arecurrentlybeingmadeforthesoft-launchinApril.CETaLwillbehousedat the UTP’sMultipurpose Hall and accessible to all UTP staff andstudents.

DuringtheQ&Asession, thereweresuggestionsandfeedbackfromstaff on attracting top talents from industry, career progression,operationalexcellenceandextrinsicandintrinsicrewards.Inresponse,YBhg.DatuksaidthatsomeoftheseissueswillbeaddressedbytheestablishmentoftheStar(SustainableEnvironmentforTalentAttractionandRetention)Lab.TheLabteammemberswillconductathoroughanalysisoftheissuesandproposeconcretesolutionsofattractingandretaining staff. DepartmentofComputerandInformationSciences(DCIS),UniversitiTeknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and Parent-Teacher Association, SKSultan Yussuf Batu Gajah recently organised the ‘IT and Societies’eventon1March2014atUndercroft,UTP.

OfficiatedbyDrShuibBasri,DeputyHeadofDCIS,UTP,theobjectiveof the eventwas to educate the community, especially parents andchildren,onthechallengesoflivingintoday’ssociety,withthegrowingaccessibilityof the Internet.For thispurpose, renownedmotivationalspeakers in parenting, Encik Ahmad Fakhri Hamzah and his wife,PuanJamilahSamianwere invited toshare their tipsonbringingupchildrenintheglobalisationera.

BothhusbandandwifearecertifiedprofessionaltrainersatMalaysianInstituteofManagement(MIM)andhavebeendeliveringtalksinmanyorganisations,agencies,institutions,collegesandschoolsinMalaysiaandabroad.TheyaretheauthorsofCoolMumSuperDad,aguidefortoday’sparentsinovercomingparentingchallengesintoday’ssociety.

Thehalf-dayeventwasdividedintotwosessions.Thefirstsessionwasamotivationalsession for120schoolchildrenwhile thesecondonewasdedicatedtotheparents.Issuesonglobalisationamongchildren,methods and techniques on how to prepare children to succeed,to become happy and informed global citizens were discussed.Childrenwereadvisedtorespecttheirparents,maketheirparentsfeelcomfortableandputtheirparents’needsaboveeverythingelse.

A team of students from the Information Communication andTechnology(ICT)programmealsoassistedtheeventbydemonstratingtheirroboticproject,theLEGOMindstormRobotic,totheparticipants.TheprojectwaspartofUTP’smissiontoinvolveitsstudentsinCSRactivities as the university believes that such activities will help inproducingwell-rounded students andassist students in achievingabalanceduniversitylife.

UTPingeneralandDepartmentofComputerandInformationSciences(DCIS)inparticular,isawareofitssocialresponsibilityinimprovingthequalityoflifeofthepeopleofitssurroundingcommunity.DCISbelieveshigh impact Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities areachievable througha long term investment ineducation.EventsuchasITandSocietieswillassistinpromotingeducationandknowledgetoall, irrespectiveof race, creedorpoliticalbelief. Inaddition, itwillalsohelpinenhancingtheleadershipandcommunicationskillsamongUTPstudents.

Reaching Out to the Community through ICT

For the year 2014, DCIS has planned a series of CSR activitiesinvolvingprimary and secondary school childrenaroundPerak. Theactivities include Little ProgrammersCamp for primary schools andMobileAppsChallengeforsecondaryschools,wherestudentswillbeexposed to interesting IT relatedmodulesand tutoredbya teamofexperiencedDCISstudents.

DCISwillalsoorganisethesecondYoungProgrammersCamp(YPC),a problem-based programming competition for secondary schools.Participantsarerequiredtosolveasetofproblemsinspecifiedtimeframeusingacommonprogramminglanguagelearntatschools.

UTP inks MOU with NanoMalaysia Berhad

NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB) officially signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MoU)withUniversiti TeknologiPETRONAS (UTP), ataspecialceremonyheldon24March2014.NMBwas representedby its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad while UTPwas represented by its Vice Chancellor, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul RahimHj Hashim. The ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy SecretaryGeneral (Science)ofMinistryofScience,Technologyand Innovation(MOSTI),YangBerusahaDrZulkifliMohamedHashim.

In conjunction with MOSTI Commercialisation Year 2014, thisceremonymarkedanimportantoccasionforbothpartiesandMOSTI,as thetechnologytransferandcommercialisationofnanotechnologywillplayanimportantrole inthedevelopmentandrolloutofthermalmanagement for LED industry inMalaysia,which is also oneof thegoalstobeachievedforMOSTI.

“These collaboration efforts are to exploit UTP’s backgroundtechnologyandtechnologyknow-howbyforminggeneralframeworkfor new business development with potential business partners ofnew inventionand/or innovationofnanotechnologyproduct through

various commercialisation processes, including creating awarenessandpromotiontotheindustry.Thefirstpointofthiscollaborationisonthe copper-carbon nanotubes nanocomposite thermalmanagementproductwhichfeaturesasignificant improvement inheatdissipation.This achievement will be very relevant in many sectors such aselectronics,automotive,IT,etc.”DrRezalsaid.

In his speech, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim said that “The signing ofthis MoU is another important milestone for UTP’s journey towardsbecoming an internationally recognised higher learning institution.Indeed,wearehonouredtohaveNanoMalaysiaBerhadtocollaboratewith us in joint cooperation in the areas of technical education,training,researchandinnovation.Certainly,thissignificantalliancewillaugurwelltowardstheholisticdevelopmentoftheuniversityandtheNanoMalaysiaandfurtherhelpustoremaincompetitiveandrelevanttotheindustryandnationatlarge.

Collaboration Forays with KOSEN, JapanUniversiti Teknologi PETRONAS signed a memorandum ofunderstanding (MOU) to collaboratewith nine renowned Institute ofNationalCollegesofTechnology(KOSEN),JapanInKyushu-OkinawaRegion, Japan, namely theKurumeNationalCollege of Technology,Ariake National College of Technology, Kitakyushu National Collegeof Technology, Sasebo National College of Technology, KumamotoNationalCollegeofTechnology,OitaNationalCollegeofTechnology,Miyakonojo National College of Technology, Kagoshima NationalCollegeofTechnologyandOkinawaNationalCollegeofTechnology

The collaborationwill focus on various academic activities includingstaff and student exchange; exchange of academic materials andpublications; joint research activities; organising joint lectures,symposia and conferences; and other activities such as studentinternship,culturalandstudytrips.

The signingof thisMOU is a historic event forUTPas it is the firstuniversity in Malaysia to collaborate with KOSEN. The significantalliance will augur well towards the holistic development of theuniversityandKOSEN,andfurtherhelpUTPtoremaincompetitiveandrelevanttotheindustryandnationatlarge.Itisalsoanotherimportantmilestone for UTP’s journey towards becoming an internationallyrecognisedhigherlearninginstitutionofdistinctivereputation.

UTPhasalsocollaboratedwithotheruniversities inJapan includingMeiji,Sojo,Osaka,HiroshimaandrecentlyTokyo,aswellasothertopJapanesemultinationalcorporationssuchasMitsubishiandHitachi.With these partnerships, UTP not only experience the exchangeof students and academic staff but also academic materials andpublications.Inaddition,therewerealsocooperationforjointlectures,research, symposia and conferences and other activities such asstudentinternship,culturalandstudytrips.InAugustandSeptember2012, 14 students fromUniversity of Tokyo (UT), Japan underwenttheUTP-UTSummerProgrammeatUTP.During the students’ stayin UTP, they enrolled in short courses andwere involved in variousprogrammes such as educational trips, cultural and recreationalactivitieswithinandoutsidetheuniversitycompound.

The enrolment number for the second intake saw a 63% increasecomparedtothefirst intakeinSeptember2013,whichconsistsof8studentswhoseaffiliationsincludecompaniesfromwithinandoutsideofPETRONASgroup.“Wearehappyandencouragedbytheincreaseinenrolmentnumberforthesecondcohort.Wedonotexpectalargenumberofenrolmentineachintake.AfteralltheMBA-EMprogrammeis a very niche programme catering for a specific industry of theeconomy.Weemphasiseinqualityrecruitmentthanquantity”,saidDrLai.

The 50 credit hours, 20 months MBA-EM programme features a

dynamic yet comprehensive curriculum design which includes 9business core and 5 energy management specialisation modules,namelyEnergyValueChain,EnergyManagement,EnergyTechnologyand Innovation, Low Carbon Economy and Sustainability, EnergyRegulations andPolicies. In addition, the programme structure alsoincorporates business research methodology and consultancymanagementmodulestogetherwithaprojectreport.

To enrich the learning experience as well as provide a globalperspective to scholars, the MBA-EM programme forges acollaboration with the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute(RASEI)ofUniversityofColoradoatBoulder,USA.Thecollaborationwill see the 5 energy management specialisation modules to bedeliveredbyRASEI’s visitingprofessors.TheRASEI’sprofessorsareled by Professor Dr Paul Komor, who in 2007 shared in the NobelPeacePrizeawardedtoAlGoreandtheIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange(IPCC).

PETRONAS Human ResourcesManagement Division in September2013hadmadetheMBA-EMprogrammeavailableforthegroupwide’sCareer Enhancement Programme (full scholarship) and EducationalEnhancementProgramme(financialassistanceofRM5,000).

All of the MBA-EM off-campus classes will be conducted over theweekendswith the exception of 5 energymanagementmodules inwhichsomeweekdayclasseswillbe involved.Thisarrangementwillfacilitateworkingprofessionalsattendingtheclasseswithoutaffectingmuch of their dailywork.
