Greetings! The Sioux City Art Center recently collaborated with the Sioux City Public Museum to co-host the Iowa Museum Association’s annual conference. In addition to the opportunity to work with the Public Museum’s staff, the conference allowed both organizations to showcase their facilities and programs to museum professionals from across the state.

While the conference was a great opportunity to network with our colleagues, the purpose of the annual meeting is educational. This is achieved through a number of breakout sessions on a variety of topics, allowing organizations to share information on innovative initiatives, expertise on museum issues, new research, and resources.

The sessions are selected through a vetting process in which proposals from individuals and organizations are selected on the basis of relevance and interest to the field. The Art Center presented three sessions: one on the Art Center’s successful Blockbuster Partnership in which individuals, foundations, and businesses make five-year pledges supporting a series of major exhibitions, as well as a collecting initiative to grow the Permanent Collection; a second on the Art Center’s Margaret Ann Martin Everist Educational Initiative, focusing on developing and distributing educational materials in support of the Permanent Collection; and, a third session on board development. The Public Museum also presented a session on building endowments.

While all the sessions were well received, the reaction to holding the conference in Sioux City was very positive. Participants were not only impressed with the Museum and Art Center, but they also noted how much they enjoyed downtown Sioux City.

Part of participants’ experience was the public art that populates the Art Center and Museum’s campuses as well as the larger downtown area. While most the sculptures in downtown are the work of Sculpt Siouxland, the Art Center’s own efforts have resulted in two outstanding outdoor sculptures on our campus: the 54-foot tall John Henry and the new Michael Dunbar sculpture. Both of these downtown sculptures are even more visible now that they are both lit at night.

Mark your calendar for May 16, 2014, when the Art Center celebrates its 100th birthday with a Centennial Celebration.

I look forward to seeing you at the Art Center.

Youth Art Month ExhibitionFebruary 15 – April 6, 2014Reception: Sunday, February 16, 1:30-3:00 pm

This annual exhibition features works by Siouxland students from the tri-state area. A local art professional will review hundreds of works to find the very best. This year’s exhibition will present work by high school students.

Still and Silent PlacesPaintings by J. F. GoffMarch 1 – June 1, 2014Reception: Saturday, March 1, 5:00-7:00 pm Jim Goff (1920-2007) was one of the area’s most beloved art instructors. Though he did not begin painting seriously until the 1960s, he quickly became one of the most respected and sought after artists in the region. Best known for his landscapes, Goff based most of his art on the environment in and around Sioux City, developing a style that represented perfectly the sense of quiet and solitude that is still found in rural Siouxland. The Art Center is working with many of the dozens of private collectors of his watercolors in the Siouxland area to bring together the best examples of these works. Goff was born in Two Harbors, Minnesota, and moved with his family to Sioux City as a child. After graduating from East High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, remaining until the end of World War II. Then he returned to Sioux City, where he received a degree from Morningside College in 1950. He then received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Drake University in 1957. For 29 years he taught art at East High School, while also teaching classes at the Sioux City Art Center and Western Iowa Tech Community College.

This exhibition is underwritten in part by the Aalfs Family Foundation.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONSAn Impressive CollectionA Half-Century of Prints October 26, 2013 – February 2, 2014

The Print Club of Cleveland has worked with many of the best printmakers in the world since the early 20th century. The Art Center recognized the Print Club’s commitment to excellence nearly 50 years ago and became an annual subscriber. This subscription has led to the creation of a diverse collection of prints. The artists represented in this exhibition range widely in their artistic styles, but are united in their commitment to exploring the unique possibilities of creating art through printmaking techniques.

Quilt ArtInternational ExpressionsNovember 23, 2013 – February 16, 2014

This exhibition features a large variety of contemporary quilts by the members of Quilt Art, an international group of quilt-making artists. This exhibition includes the work of artists from eight different European countries and the United States. Many Quilt Art members formally trained in other fields, but found satisfaction and self-expression in the tactile process of patterning, sewing, layering, and joining fabric. Each member of the group approaches her work differently, resulting in a varied and thought-provoking collection of quilts. Some deal with modern social issues. Others draw inspiration from landscape and place. Of the more abstract quilts, some emphasize color and form while others attend to texture and stitching. A number of the quilts are hand-painted, dyed, or printed. Their materials range from fine silks to old linen found in the street. Whether pieced together abstractly by hand, or stitched carefully by machine, one thing these artists and their textiles have in common is their ability to enthusiastically introduce audiences to the little-known yet captivating world of art quilts.

Quilt Art: International Expressions was organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Quilt Art.

Sculpt SiouxlandMay 2013 - June 2014 Sculpt Siouxland is a joint project of Sculpt Siouxland, Inc., a private, non-profit organization that provides financial support to the project, and the Sioux City Art Center. The purpose of Sculpt Siouxland is to bring ten outstanding outdoor sculptures to downtown Sioux City for a year-long exhibition. In addition, Sculpt Siouxland is active in acquiring sculptures for its collection, which remains on permanent display throughout downtown Sioux City. Currently, the Sculpt Siouxland collection includes 13 sculptures.

ART CENTER’S ARTSPLASH

At Riverside Park, Art Center’s ArtSplash 2013 provided a fun festival after a long, hot summer for the Siouxland area. Under the shade of Riverside Park’s old oak trees, we celebrated 20 years by highlighting the best of ArtSplash, and heard time and again from participants, volunteers and guests that Riverside Park is our best location ever! Brulé, Tonic Sol-fa, Patchouli, Kelsey K, Jill Miller and a full line of entertainers provided two days of music and fun! With the help of dedicated volunteers, sponsors, and participants, the weekend once again highlighted the best of Siouxland! Several local performers contributed to the fantastic talent on both the Main Stage and in the Children’s Stage, and 400 local volunteers donated over 2,000 hours. In the Children’s Area, families enjoyed creative activities and projects provided by eleven local non-

profit groups. ArtSplash also helped Boy Scout Troop #225 raise funds through water sales, supported Western Iowa Tech’s Police Science Club, and the Cosmopolitan Club with their fight to cure diabetes. In all, over $18,000 was donated back to non-profit and other children’s groups for their participation in ArtSplash.

Those that browsed the juried art show raved about the selection of art available from over 100 outstanding artists as well as our SPLASH artists: three local professional artists awarded the opportunity to experience selling art in the festival environment. With the help of a mentor artist and tents provided by the Art Center, the SPLASH artists were ready for business at the festival this year and well received by the community. The many art activities in the Children’s Area and Hands

on for Bigger Hands booth provided cost-effective opportunities for festival-goers to exercise their own creativity as well.

In addition to providing fun and entertainment for Siouxland locals, Art Center’s ArtSplash also brought approximately $1.5 million into Sioux City with out-of-town guests staying in hotels, buying meals, visiting local attractions and shopping!

Plans for the 2014 Art Center’s ArtSplash are already underway. You’re encouraged to get involved! Keep your eye on the festival website at www.siouxcityartcenter.org/ ArtSplash or contact Erin Webber-Dreeszen at 712-279-6272 ext. 232 or [email protected] about how you can be a part of the festival!

The Sioux City Art Center is a model public private partnership between the City of Sioux City and Art Center Association of Sioux City. Without the support of both, the Art Center could not offer the quality programs that we provide our community.

Greetings! I am pleased to report that the Sioux City Art Center had a good year. In addition to our regular program of exhibitions and educational offerings, we also moved one of our most visible events, Art Center’s ArtSplash, to a new location. In 2012 the annual Labor Day weekend arts festival was held at Grandview Park. While the park is outstanding, offering an art deco band shell, the hills proved to be too difficult for many of our visitors. After the 2012 event, the Art Center’s staff and boards decided to take a good look at what we wanted to achieve with the festival. Based on our common vision for growing the project, we decided to move the event to Riverside Park.

Riverside offered space to expand, plentiful shade, ample parking and a flat terrain. After ArtSplash 2013 was held at Riverside, all involved declared it a success. The artists, food vendors, and visitors all liked the new venue, with most noting that it was the best venue yet. In addition, the staff and volunteers felt Riverside was a good move and made managing the project much easier than the two previous sites.

The big event in our exhibition program was our seventh Blockbuster exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Man Inventor Genius Man Artist Genius. The exhibition broke our individual attendance record for an exhibition with an admission fee, with over 18,000 visitors. As the year ended, the Art Center was set to open its eighth Blockbuster exhibition with Michael Dunbar Sculptures. The project featured an exhibition of Dunbar’s sculptures in conjunction with the purchase of a major outdoor sculpture by the artist for the Art Center’s front lawn.

Annual ReportJuly 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013

Another important outdoor sculpture was also added to the Art Center with the placement of the monumental John Henry sculpture, Sioux City, at the northwest corner of the Art Center’s campus. Both of these new outdoor sculptures are now lit at night, raising the visibility of the Art Center to those passing through our downtown. In addition, the Art Center has continued to partner with Sculpt Siouxland to enhance downtown Sioux City with outdoor sculpture. This growing collaboration has resulted in attracting more large-scale sculptures to the annual exhibition. The Sculpt Siouxland 2013 exhibition consists of 23 outdoor sculptures, including 13 that have been purchased for Sculpt’s permanent collection.

The year 2014 will mark the 100th year anniversary of the Art Center. In 1914 a group of individuals founded the Society of Fine Arts with the mission of making art available to the public. They achieved their mission by presenting exhibitions in public spaces and providing art classes. While collecting was not part of the Society’s goal, as individuals they did collect, and when they established the Sioux City Art Center in 1938 they donated works from their efforts to the Art Center. As part of its centennial celebration, the Art Center will publish a book on its history and its permanent collection.

While I highlighted only a few events, the following report provides information on the full extent of our programs. I look forward to reporting to you at the end of 2014.

Youth Art MonthIn celebration of Youth Art Month, the Sioux City Art Center held its 24th Annual Juried Youth Art Exhibition for area high schools, from February 16 – April 7, 2013. This year’s juror, Pauline Sensenig, thoughtfully chose 94 pieces for the exhibition out of 488 submitted artworks. The opening reception on Sunday, February 17 was extremely well received with 300 children and adults filling the atrium. Mayor Bob Scott, Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman, Art Center Director Al Harris-Fernandez and Visual Arts Head Instructor Lance Hankins assisted in the presentation of awards.

Community requested Classes, Workshops and Outreach ProgramsThe Education Department hosted 26 community requested workshops throughout the year including the following groups: Girl Scouts; Boy Scouts; Upward Bound; Home School; Girls Incorporated; Empty Bowls project; Siouxland Food Bank; Jackson Recovery, Tracy Koch Daycare; Nodland School Special Needs; DARE Lock-in; The Red Cross; Building Blocks Day Care (Sergeant Bluff); Building Blocks Day Care (Outer Drive, Sioux City) Kinder Cottage Daycare, North Middle School Carnival, Wells Blue Bunny, Life Long Learning Program, Thrivent Financial and Beyond the Bell. Education GalleryThe William T. Dible Hallway and the Metz Education Hallway on the second floor have been designated as spaces for hanging artwork created by students and faculty at the Art Center. The displays were changed a total six times throughout the year and included student art, class schedules and other art-related subjects, such as the elements and principles of art.

Docent ProgramOur team of twelve dedicated volunteer docents consistently attended informative and educational tours given at the beginning of every new exhibition by the director, curator and studio program coordinator. We are extremely grateful to the docents for conducting 144 tours, serving 3,212 children and adults. Included in these numbers is the ARTworks program, serving fifth grade students who receive free busing, a guided tour and an opportunity to create a piece of artwork based on the Grant Wood murals. There were 43 ARTworks tours with a total of 1,140 fifth-grade students.

Project SOARStudent Opportunities for Art Research, held throughout the month of June, is intended for artistically-talented high school students who would enjoy and learn from an intense, fifteen-hour art workshop. This year’s Project SOAR utilized the expertise of four highly qualified artists and instructors including: Mike Hill (ceramics), Susan Heggestad (2-Dimensional multi-media), Chris Holton (3-D multi-media) and Jodi Whitlock (portrait painting). Twenty-six students from nine area high schools took advantage of this program which is underwritten by the Art Center Association of Sioux City.

EDUCATIONArtful Birthday PartiesThe Art Center has hosted 28 birthday parties in the past 12 months. Under the direction of our inventive teachers, 337 participants created fun projects and memories.

ArtCamp 2012This was the ninth year the Art Center has hosted ArtCamp. This year’s camps were a huge success with 177 children attending. ArtCamp 2012 culminated with an exhibition of the children’s artworks, and a reception on August 19, 2012. These works were selected by the children and displayed from August 19 – September 25, 2012, in the Education Gallery on second floor.

Classes and WorkshopsDuring the 2012-2013 quarterly semesters, 83 adult and children classes were offered at the Art Center. A total of 1,454 students participated in the classes for a total of 8,210 teacher-student contact hours. Nearly all of the adult classes were available for graduate credit or teaching license renewal credit through Northwest AEA, Briar Cliff University and Morningside College.

Holiday Gift-making WorkshopsOur annual Holiday Workshops were held December 8, 2012. Eight art projects and refreshments were offered free of charge to the public. Under the guidance of four instructors, 150 children and adults participated in this fun annual event.

Spring Break Create-a-thon 2013The Spring Break Create-a-thon was a new offering this year that provided youth classes taught by Debra Marqusee and Karen Kinney. On April 23 – 25, 2013, twenty students (ages 9-14) attended painting, ceramic and 3-D classes at the Art Center.

SECURITY NATIONAL BANK MEMBER FDIC

Call or visit one of our convenient locations today.snbonline.com
