Transcript of Quarter Learning Options for Parents – Tentative Timeline ...€¦ · If you have any questions...
Hello Discovery Academy of Science Friends and Families, 09/04/2020 2nd Quarter Learning Options for Parents – Tentative Timeline - We are planning to ask parents their learning selections for the second nine weeks. The tentative timeline
is as follows. Again once a selection is made, we expect the students continue that choice for the whole second quarter. Please plan accordingly.
• September 30: Parent survey out via email, school website and DAS facebook account. • October 9: Due date for parents to submit their choices. • October 9-16: DAS Admin will make schedule adjustments IF needed. • October 19-23: Schedules communicated to parents • October 23: The last day of Quarter-1 • October 27: First day of the second quarter for students.
E-Learning Updates - If you have any tech or curriculum-related questions, please contact your E-Learning teacher first. If they
can't solve it, they will direct you to the right person at DAS. - We expect lower elementary school parents read all the communication from classroom teachers very
carefully. If you have any questions the best method to communicate with your teacher is to email. - E-Learning students must use their school google accounts while they are in E-Learning. If the student
workstation is logged into any other google account previously other than school account, you may encounter problems accessing some of the digital resources.
COVID-19 Updates - Parents can access the confirmed covid-19 cases via this link. https://www.pcsb.org/COVID19Cases - If your child is attending face to face learning at DAS, please make sure we have your up to date contact
information. We want to send any kids with possible symptoms to home as quickly as possible. MAP Testing and DAS Online Resources - Due to school closures back in March 2020 and switching to spring e-learning last school year, we
suspect some students may experience learning losses. - AR Platform: DAS AR system was mostly up during summer. Many students in K-5 participated summer
AR program. DAS Elementary teachers are now working on student's AR goals for the first 9 weeks. Please contact your classroom teacher about your child's AR goal. Please remember that all kids in grades 1-5 will have AR goals to reach in each quarter. Happy Reading DAS Tigers
- myON: DAS online library is up and running; please use your child's DAS Connect login to start exploring our online library. After reading a book, you can go to AR to take a quiz and earn points towards your quarterly goal. Our official school name is: "Discovery Academy Of Science Charter."
- DAS Connect: Our online student information platform is up and running. You must have received the daily notification email by now. Please contact DAS office manager Amy at [email protected] for any contact email or login questions.
- MAP Testing: all face to face students will be tested next week for reading math and science. This test will provide baseline date for school to progress monitor or enrich our curriculum for advanced and gifted learner.
Emre Akbaba, M. Ed. Principal
Greetings DAS Students and Families.
Another great week has passed at Discovery Academy of Science. We administered the “practice NWEA MAP” test
which was mainly to detect tech issues for e-learners and fix it before the actual test. We are entering a busy week
next week. Our first NWEA MAP administration will take place throughout next week Sept 14-18. And we will release
the first progress report the following week on Friday, Sept 25.
Here are the highlights and upcoming events:
NWEA MAP Fall Administration (e-learning)
• Practice test was administered for E-learners last Wednesday
• Following common issues found and addressed
o Not being able to log in due to screen resolution issue on chromebooks
o Test is not opening on Apple products (ipad, imac etc.)
o Disabled pop up in internet Browser
• Although I assisted the parents/students fixing above issues, I suggest families to click this link:
https://check.nwea.org/ on their students’ devices to perform a final check this weekend.
• I attached device set up and troubleshooting in the following pages to further assist you overcoming
potential tech issues
• Please make sure that your student’s device is ready for the test by Monday.
AR
• All elementary students are assigned a quarterly AR goal when school opened
• Students are expected to reach the 50% of their Quarterly AR goal by the progress reports (mid quarter)
• Please make sure your students are on track and let your classroom teacher know if you are experiencing any
difficulties.
Q1 Progress Reports
• Q1 Progress reports will be available on Friday, Sept 24
• We will provide the hard copies to the face-to-face students
• Electronic copies will be available for both face-to-face and e-learning students on DASconnect under “Report
Cards” tab
*E-learning parents: Please check next pages for NWEA MAP device set up and trouble shooting

COLOR THEORY Review This week we have been learning about Color Theory. We can identify and classify colors as primary, secondary, warm, cool, intermediate, (sometimes called tertiary), and neutral. We can talk about how colors are mixed and how to identify pairs of complementary colors (opposites on the color wheel). We can decide if a color is a shade, tint or tone
of a hue (5th grade!) by adding black, white or gray.
We also discussed how colors can effect emotions or feelings and how artists choose a color scheme based on how they want the viewer to feel or to reflect how the artist feels.
We looked at this landscape, “Cotopaxi”, by Frederic Church and a POP Art Land-scape by Peter Max, as well as abstract art by Wassily Kandinsky—who, we learned, is the “father” of abstract art.
3rd grade learned about the parts of a landscape—foreground, middle ground and background.
4th & 5th grade classes compared the color wheel to Disney characters’ colors and how the main colors of a character relate to the character’s traits and how we feel about that
character. LOOk for information on our
Square 1 Art FUN-draiser COMING SOON!
How do colors
evoke feelings?
DAS PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Hello to all and I hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. PE classes continue to roll along
and we continue our journey on Individual Fitness. This week we are learning about Target
Heart Rate, Maximum Heart Rate and how to calculate them. Students are also learning how to
use these numbers to measure their workload. We have some new exciting things at the school
as well. We are building Table Tennis tops and have portable nets so we can do a Table Tennis
Unit or have another activity we can do inside on a rainy day. We have completed the record
board for the Physical Fitness testing results and it looks really good. Students will be tested 3
times a year so the students will have 2 more opportunities this year to get their name on the
record board.
Students are doing a CrossFit in class this week and what a great way to put a bunch of different
exercises together for a quick, efficient workout. This work out allows you to make up your own
routines using your own exercises. The best thing about it is that you don’t have to use weight
equipment, just bodyweight exercises are plenty.
E-LEARNING STUDENTS
E-Learning students continue to do a great job at filling out the activity logs. I will be posting
videos for you on how to find your Target Heart Rate, Maximum Heart Rate and how to do the
calculations. I will also be posting Crossfit workouts for you to partake in next week for PE.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and stay safe.

Computing — Mrs Bradbury
Welcome to Computing, Grade 6 have completed their own APP design project.
We have looked at inputs, processes and outputs, de-cided on a real world problem which the students would like their app design to solve.
The students have also designed their APP screen on paper, identifying the inputs, processes and outputs.
Next week we are starting to learn our HTML code and designing our Website ready for our programming. Great work 6th Grade.
Grade 8 have continued their study of Systems Archi-tecture, this week we have looked storage, we have focused on optical, magnetic and solid state drives.
The students have identified and explored the char-acteristics of each type.
They have also been given real-world scenarios, sug-gested the type of storage devices which would be appropriate and justified their recommendations.
Well done 8th Grade awesome work.
In 1833 a man by the name of Charles Babbage invented all
the parts that are now used for a modern computer. But it
was only 120 years later that the first ‘modern’ computers
were invented.

6TH GRADE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS & HISTORY
Sixth and Seventh Grade Math News from Ms. Chapin ([email protected])
I teach 6A (7th Grade Advanced Math, which includes 8th grade skills), 6B (6th Grade Advanced Math, which includes 7th grade skills), 6C (6th Grade Math), and 7C (7th Grade Math).
This week in math, students reviewed ratios and proportions in various forms and compared and contrasted proportional relationships with linear relationships. They looked at diagrams, tables, graphs, and equations and examined the idea of proportionality from several sides and generalized the idea to include
slope and non-zero y-intercepts. The first math test covering chapter 1 was on Sept. 11 on Study Island. Students can see their scores right
away, so they should be able to set clear goals for themselves in terms of improving or maintaining their study habits depending on how they do. Next week, students have NWEA Map testing in reading, math, and science, so we’ll mostly be reviewing and exploring concepts on BrainPop and performance tasks next week, solidifying their skills from chapter 1 and preparing for chapter 2: Percents, Decimals, and Fractions.
Any skills that students need to review on IXL are encouraged to be reviewed and improved before the test as a study technique that will also improve their scores.
Any students who are absent are welcome to join the e-Learning classes, as I have those for every class, too. 7th grade Advanced meets virtually 9:20-10:05, 7th grade meets 10:08-10:53, and 6th grade meets 1:05-1:50. The only one with a different class time than normal is 6th grade, but that is something to be aware of if your 6th grade math student is absent. All of the work can be done from home online, so hopefully he or she feels well enough to stay pretty much caught up with the class. Now it’s time to play Spot the Concept! See which of the images shows concepts your child has learned recently and ask them to explain them to you!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last week your children learned about the Enlightenment and the thinkers who influenced the
creation of the United States. Students have been able to demonstrate an understanding of why such
thinkers like John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, and Thomas Paine are key in understanding the
formation of our nation. Your children also took their first unit test this past Friday. Results should be up
soon.
Next week we will starting a unit on the break from Great Britain and the American War for
Independence. A vocabulary list will be given on Monday, but the quiz will not be until the next week
(September 22). If a student would rather do quizlet cards online, they may – he or she must send me
the link. Just a side note vocabulary quizzes are only one per unit, not weekly. Students should continue
studying these for five to ten minutes an evening. Also, regarding the home learning packets, these are
to be done in sections. They are nightly assignments. It is best if your child completes the packet
section by section on the night assigned.
If you have any questions concerning the week ahead, please feel free to email me at
[email protected]. Thank you for your time and support.
Humbly, Joe Procopio

Upcoming news
Good day, I want everyone to know I appreciate the patience and time spent by my students and their families accommodating the major changes that are necessary to accommodate everyone’s safety and health.
Next week our 8th grade and biology students will be working on balancing chemical equations and how atoms interact with the biology students focusing on how biomolecules are important for life. The quiz is scheduled for early on the week of Sept. 21st.
7th grade will continue their study of rocks and minerals as well as ensuring that we are able to prepare for the quiz at the beginning of the week of Sept 21st.
Important notes
I want to make it clear to my students and their families that I have extremely high expectations for them because I know they are capable of meeting them. With this in mind, I want to make it clear that even academically talented students are not likely to do well on my assessments unless they spend time studying outside of class. The primary reason that I try to give students a week or more of notice for quizzes and tests is the ensure you have the opportunity to study the material. I post my notes on DASconnect and I fully expect students to review them, to use the quizlet, and to use any other methods necessary to make sure they understand the material.
