For the third quarter of 1979, a period normally characterized by low

Taiwan .ccounted for nearly 60 percent of U.S. imports in the third quarter of

1979, compared to 51 percent in the third quarter of 1978. The Republic of

Korea (the second principal supplier) and Hong Kong also increased their

shipments to the United States to 7.7 million pounds and 3.5 million pounds,

respectively. The import market share of Hong Kong rose slightly from 11 to

12 percent between the two third-quarter periods. However, the import market

share of the Republic of Korea declined from 33 percent to 26 percent.

the third-quarter periods of 1977-79. Production, sales, and ending
