Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is

Weather is caused by

The uneven heating and cooling of the Earth.

How long does it take for the Earth to complete a rotation?

24 hours

What is the Water cycle’s effect on the Earth?

It recycles our water supply so that it is never used up.

The ‘buddies’ in the water cycle are

Transpiration & evaporation

During evaporation, the following change occurs:

Liquid changes to gas

Water changes to water vapor

Page 13: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Why does water vapor rise into the air?

It is lighter than the air.

Page 14: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Clouds are formed by

Condensation

Which climate zone experiences one long warm

and sunny season?

Tropical zone

Page 16: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Why does precipitation occur?

The water droplets in the clouds join together and because of their size and weight.

NAME THAT CLOUD!!!

Page 18: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Often block out the sun, and usually produce light to heavy continuous rain.

Stratus

Page 19: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Usually low clouds seen on an overcast day.

Stratus

Page 20: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Clouds usually associated with thunderstorms, and rise high into atmosphere & have an anvil shape.

Cumulo-nimbus

Page 21: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Thin, wispy clouds, typically found at high altitudes.

Cirrus

Page 22: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Generally occur in fair weather and point in the direction of air movement at their elevation.

Cirrus

These are the ‘typical coloring book style’ clouds.

Cumulus

Page 24: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Fog can be considered a low version of this cloud in contact with the ground.

Stratus

Page 25: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Composed of ice crystals that originate from the freezing of super cooled water droplets.

Cirrus

Page 26: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Puffy clouds with distinct edges and usually a noticeable vertical (upward) development.

Vocabulary!!

Page 28: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Axis: The imaginary line that runs through the Earth from the North pole to the South Pole.

Page 29: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Revolution:The movement of the Earth in it’s orbit around the sun. It takes about 365 days, or one year.

Page 30: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Summer Solstice: The day of the year when the Earth receives maximum amounts of daylight. There are more daylight hours on this day than any other day of the year.

Page 31: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

EquatorThe imaginary line of latitude that cuts the Earth into two equal hemispheres.

Page 32: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Rotation:The movement of the Earth as it spins on it’s axis. Takes about 24 hours or one day.

Page 33: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Precipitation: The process in the water cycle after

condensation when the liquid water suspended in the atmosphere stick together and become to heavy. When the atmosphere can no longer hold the water it will fall back to the Earth as RAIN, SNOW, SLEET, or, HAIL.

Page 34: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Winter Solstice: The day of the year when the

Earth receives the MINIMUM amount of direct sunlight. This gives us the day with the least amount of daylight hours.

December 21

Page 35: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Run-off: When the ground is too

saturated to hold any more water, the excess water ‘runs-off’ to lower lying areas.

This helps to move ground water through the water cycle.

Page 36: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Evaporation: Process in the water cycle when heat

from the sun heats the surface of Earth’s water and turns it into a gas called water vapor.

Moves water through the water cycle by turning LIQUID water to a GAS.

Water to water vapor Liquid to gas

Page 37: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Fall Equinox: September 21

This day receives equal amount of sunlight hours to darkness.

Page 38: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Water Cycle: The recycling process of Earth’s water resource. Water is changed from a liquid to a gas (water

vapor) through evaporation, transpiration (evaporation from plant leaves)

Then as the water vapor rises (because it is lighter than air) and reaches cooler air, the water vapor is condensed back into a liquid (and clouds are formed). The water will remain suspended in the air until the molecules stick together and become to HEAVY for the atmosphere to hold.

It then fall back to the Earth as precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, or hail).

Page 39: Quarter 1: 2013 Test Review. Beginning with fall, the order of the seasons is Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Condensation: The process in the water cycle where

water vapor cools in the atmosphere and is changed back into it’s liquid form. This is how clouds are formed.

The liquid water remains in the atmosphere as long as the atmosphere can hold it.

Latitude & Longitude The grid system of

imaginary lines running perpendicular to each other.

It purpose is to give a systematic, accurate, and effective means to describe locations on the Earth.

Spring Equinox:March 21

This day of the year has equal amounts of daylight hours to darkness.

Transpiration: The ‘buddy’ to

EVAPORATION in the water cycle.

This is the process of water evaporating through the surface of leaves.
