Quantum™ total light management
Improves comfort and productivity while saving energy
“We designed our building to use 1.28 Watts per square foot of lighting power. With Quantum™, it’s only using 0.38 — that’s 70% less.” Glenn Hughes, Director of Construction for
The New York Times Company during design, installation,
and commissioning of The New York Times Building

The challenge:Optimize electric light and daylight to save energy and create a productive, comfortable, visual environment.
Most buildings today are over-lighted because
there is enough daylight in the space; or lights
are set to a higher level than appropriate for the
people inside; or spaces are lighted even though
they are unoccupied. This wastes energy, creates
discomfort, and reduces productivity.
The solution:Manage light with Quantum.
Quantum manages both electric light
and daylight, to not only save energy
and simplify operations but also improve
the comfort and productivity of the
people in your building.
The cost of waiting:A typical 50,000 sq. ft. commercial building spends about $45,000 each year on lighting energy. 1
Much of that money is wasted due to
ineffective light control. Through optimizing
electric light and daylight, Quantum can cut
those costs by 60% or more while greatly
improving the visual environment.
What does Quantum™ do?
Quantum prevents wasted lighting energy
by maximizing the effi cient use of light
in your building. Quantum automatically
dims or switches all electric lighting and
controls daylight using automated window
shades. Quantum manages, monitors,
and reports on all the lighting usage in your
building for optimal energy performance
and productivity while minimizing
maintenance and operating costs.
What are the benefi ts?

Where is Quantum used?
• offi ce, education, healthcare, hospitality
and other buildings• for new construction or renovations
Save electricity and protect the environmentReduces greenhouse gases by
eliminating unnecessary energy use
More electricity is used for lighting than any other building system. Controlling your
lighting is usually the easiest and most visible
way to manage your energy costs while
enhancing your space.
Light control strategies such as tuning,
dimming, occupancy sensing, daylight
harvesting, scheduling, and automatic
shading reduce energy consumption which
conserves natural resources and lowers
the amount of CO2 released into the air.
Benefi ts of Quantum™ total light management
Lower operating and maintenance costs.• automatically turn off lights in vacant spaces• use only the amount of electric light needed• minimize electricity demand charges by lowering
light levels during peak periods• reduce lighting and HVAC loads by dimming
lights and automatically controlling shades• report lamp failures for optimal group re-lamping

Easily control and re-confi gure light sources. 2 Lighting and shading zones can be re-confi gured
without rewiring, making a space adaptable to high
churn rates. As the needs of a space change, wall
controls, occupancy sensors, and daylight sensors
can be reassigned to different fi xtures or groups
of fi xtures. Furthermore, the Quantum™ system
is expandable from small, stand-alone spaces,
to whole fl oors, to the whole building or campus.
Make your tenants or employees more productive with selectable preferred light levels for specifi c tasks. Since 90% of
information is received visually, having the right
light for the job is crucial. Research indicates that
people are 4% – 7% more productive working
in their preferred light level. 3 This equates to
10 – 17 extra work days per employee per year.
Furthermore, Quantum™ shade control eliminates
harsh sun glare and heat making employees more
productive and comfortable.

Quantum™ energy savings and light control strategies
Architectural load dimmingAllows the users to dim traditional light sources such as incandescent,
halogen, low voltage, and LED.
Fluorescent dimmingHighly effi cient dimming that allows the users to dim fl uorescent
light down to 1% of full light output.
SwitchingAllows the user to switch on or off all non-dimmed light sources
using 1 million cycle relays.
Scene controlUsers can select pre-programmed light scenes
at the touch of a button.
Scene and zone controlUsers can select pre-programmed light scenes or raise
and lower individual light zones.
Light level tuningSets the target light level based on customer requirements in each
space. This level is lower than the high-end trim light level.
Personal light control Allows users in the space to select the correct light level
for the desired task. Often that is much less light than full-on.

Hyperion™ solar-adaptive shading
What it does
Hyperion solar-adaptive shading automatically adjusts
window shades based on the sun’s position throughout
the day to effectively manage the daylight in your building,
reduce glare, and save energy.
The system operator inputs the desired sunlight penetration
distance into the building and the number of shade preset
positions. Then, Hyperion solar-adaptive shading automatically
calculates the angle of the sun and adjusts the shades
to maintain the preferred light penetration.
At night the shades are lowered to minimize light pollution
and provide a uniform appearance with precision alignment.
The system also provides the ability for the user to manually
override and adjust the shades to a custom level.
Before: The afternoon sun makes
it diffi cult to work productively due
to heat and glare in the space.
After: With Hyperion solar-adaptive
shading, the window shades automatically
close when the sun reaches a critical
angle – making the space more
comfortable by reducing glare and heat
while maintaining the view outside.
The benefi ts
• 10-30% reduction in solar heat gain1
• 3-29% reduction in heat loss1
• preserves external views• maximizes effective daylight• increases comfort and reduces glare• creates an aesthetically pleasing
exterior by perfectly aligning shades

Shade: Preset (Open 50%)The sun angle is higher so shades open to preset
position to maintain the customer desired sunlight
penetration, and to reduce glare.
Shade: OpenSun angle is at a point where glass refl ects a majority
of the heat, plus light penetration is limited to 2 – 3 ft.
into the building. Shades automatically open to allow
maximum use of effective daylight.
How it works
As the sun moves throughout the day, Hyperion™ solar-adaptive shading
automatically adjusts the shade position without the requirement
for a complex array of external sensors. The Lutron out-of-the-box
solution allows simple set up based on the building’s geographic
location and user specifi ed sunlight penetration.
Additionally, manual override – via simple keypads or handheld remote –
allows the user to adjust an individual window shade if required.
Compared to sensor based shading systems, the Lutron system
provides less movement and less distraction to occupants.
Shade: ClosedAt sunrise the light and heat penetrate the building
so the shades remain closed for comfort and energy
savings, while still having access to the view.
Control and monitor Allows you to control and monitor any space in your
building by area scene, area level, or individual zone.
Beyond light control to light management
The heart of the Quantum™ solution is Q-Admin—Quantum’s powerful software
that allows facility managers to manage their electric light and daylight for
maximum energy effi ciency, comfort, and productivity. From a central location,
a facility manager can not only control electric lights and shades but also
confi gure, monitor, analyze, and report on the light in an entire building.
Q-Admin™ software highlights
16 | Lutron
TimeclocksQ-Admin™ software includes two types of timeclocks, a time-of-day
clock (e.g. 8pm weeknights) and an astronomic clock (e.g. dawn or dusk),
which control the lights and shades on the Quantum™ network. Lights
can automatically be set to a preset level or turn on or off in certain
spaces based on the time of day; and shades can automatically raise
or lower in certain spaces at specifi c times.
Timeclocks
Lutron | 17
IntelliDemand™ load shed Allows facility managers to shed a percentage of the system’s lighting output
to reduce energy costs for their facility. This can result in lower electricity rates
or rebates from utility companies, who often request reductions in electricity
levels when peak load conditions threaten to cause a blackout. With Q-Admin™
software, simply set the percentage reduction in light level and instantly
load shed your entire facility or particular space from its current power level.

Reports Allows facility managers to improve maintenance and operations,
identify issues before they become problems, and monitor the lighting
energy consumption in the whole building or any part of the building.
