Nordic Soya Oy is a vegetable protein company whose core business is to refine soya for the animal feed industry. Our state-of-the-art production facility, innovative process steering and measured quality products make us a leading manufacturer of Soy Protein Concentrate (SPC) in the European Union.

Our main product is Soy Protein Concentrate (SPC), but we also trade soybean meal and oil. As a by-product we produce soy molasses for use in feed and biofuel indus-tries. In order to respond to the growing and changing needs of our customers, we are also processing faba

beans, a locally produced vegetable protein. Our clients are mainly in young animal feed, fish feed and tech-nology industries in Europe and Asia.

Nordic Soya is a family-owned business and our produc-tion site and HQ is located in Uusikaupunki on the South-west coast of Finland. We like to combine the agility and service of a small/medium-sized company with a larger company’s scale and market reach. Our production facility is the largest full-scale, multi-stage soy processing plant in the European Union. Our personnel are highly qualified, trained and motivated to serve our clients.

Looking to the future

We put a strong focus on R&D both into process development and product efficacy. We develop our products and processes constantly.

One of our aims is to find new sources of vegetable protein for processing. Since we have started also processing faba beans, we are looking especially for local, pure vegetable protein.

We develop our processes to increase the yield and the quality of the products. The yield assumes both quantity and quality of protein. Our skilled personnel are educating themselves and working hard to come up with new innovations. As a result, our processes are now more effective and cost-efficient than earlier.

Our aim is to produce products with great digestibility and absorption of amino acids in the animal’s intestinal tract. Since SPC raw material makes a differ-ence in SPC quality, we have developed a lab test mimicking our ethanol extrac-tion, and are able to evaluate the protein uplift potential in different soy pre-sam-ples rapidly, even before buying into this raw material. This lab test has become part of our purchase specification.

PRODUCTS

Our main product, SPC, is a Soy Protein Concentrate which is used by fish and animal feed manufacturers. SPC is derived from soybean meal by ethanol extraction and contains at least 64% protein.

Our state-of-the-art soy refining process eliminates antinutrients, sucrose and oligosaccharides naturally present in soybean meal, in order to improve the digest-

ibility of soy protein and amino acids, and to avoid the negative effects of these antigens. This reduces intes-tinal disorders especially in young animals and aqua-culture, thus improving animal performance and giving young animals a better start for growth. SPC by Nordic Soya is recommended to be used in piglet and poultry starter diets, calf milk replacers and aquaculture feeds.

Soybean meal Nordic Soya Premium Soybean meal is pure, salmonel-la-free and optimised for an animal’s digestive tract. For these reasons it is the leading proteinaceous raw mate-rial in animal feeds to meet animals’ requirement for amino acids for efficient growth and health.

Soy molassesSoy molasses contains plenty of sugar, and is therefore used in cattle feed as an energy source, taste enhancer and a binding agent. It can also be used as renewable energy in biofuel production.

Soybean oilSoybean oil is extracted from soybeans and contains 18–20% oil. Soybean oil by Nordic Soya is used in animal feeds. The quality of soybean oil meets FOSFA and other international standards.

Soy hullsBefore the process, soybeans are dehulled. Ground and pelleted hulls are used in animal feeds or as renewable biofuel.

LecithinLecithin is a by-product of soybean oil. It can have several purposes; as an emulsifier in the food industry to improve the texture and taste, and in feed manufacturing as a process aid and energy source.

Our production starts with raw material sourcing. Quality and pricing of raw material are critical success factors in our business. Soya is the best protein source for animal feed as its amino acids are in the right proportion to animals’ requirements, and its availability and price are outstanding compared to other vegetable protein sources.

As a responsible company, we follow the criteria of sustainable production. We use raw materials certified by the Round Table of Responsible Soy, or ProTerra, as required by our customers. This means that we have created a liable network of soybean and meal suppliers, and require traceability documentation of the origin. Transparency of our operations, including the origin of the soya, is self-evident for us.

State-of-the-art facilitiesOur production facility is the largest full-scale, multi-stage soy processing plant in the European Union. The annual soybean processing capacity is 240,000 tons and the SPC extraction capacity is sufficient for the current market needs. The process equipment represents the

latest technology as our plant was commissioned for use only in 2013.

Process In the refining process the soybeans go through three-stages. In the pre-treatment stage, foreign material is removed and the beans are heated and dried, which eases the removal of the hulls.

In the preparation stage, the beans are cut into six pieces between corrugated steel rolls and the hulls are sepa-rated from the crushed beans. The cut beans are pressed into large, thin flakes in the flaking mill to reduce the extraction time.

We operate a multi-stage extraction. In the first stage, oil is extracted from the soy flakes with hexane solvent to produce soybean meal. In the second stage, soybean meal is extracted to SPC with water-ethanol solvent to extract saccharose, oligosaccharides and anti-nutritional factors from the meal.

As we want to ensure the seamless and efficient supply of raw material, we control all the shipments from the country of origin to the port of destination. With our reli-able partners we have created a well-functioning, effi-cient and fast supply chain.

The soya voyageFrom the country of origin the soybeans are shipped to Finland as sea bulk cargo or ocean containers. To ensure the premium quality of the raw material we perform quality control at several stages of the delivery; from the storage in the country of origin and during loading, discharging and from storage at the local port terminal.

Our production facility is located close to the port of Uusikaupunki which is an excellent hub for outbound

logistics for our products. Via the port of Uusikaupunki we can reach our main markets in Scandinavia and Conti-nental Europe effectively. We have ships that cross the Baltic Sea almost every day to Travemünde in Germany. From there, we can deliver goods in 36 hours to e.g. Italy.

At the port of Uusikaupunki we have storage capacity for loading coaster vessels. Surveyor and ship agent services are available on request. In bulk, we can offer products FOB Uusikaupunki or CIF destination basis depending on the customer’s preference. We can also offer prod-ucts delivered in ocean containers via the port of Rauma where container companies have weekly service to all over the world.

Fast deliveries

A great example of our efficient supply chain is the “Finland–Italy Express”. Our Italian customers require a solid material-flow so we have created a system which ensures that the material is delivered from door-to-door, reaching the customer in as quickly as 72 hours at best. The customer receives a container filled with fresh, high quality SPC every working day.

As a member of The Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS), we choose the most ethical ways for the whole supply chain. We use certified soya suppliers who are committed to responsible soy production and Identity Pres-ervation (IP). The sourcing, production and support func-tions are performed in a sustainable and transparent way.

In our quality assurance we will make use of the GMP+ quality programme certified by Lloyds, including a HACCP system. Our performance is controlled by the Finnish Food Safety Authority EVIRA, a local arm of EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).
