Introduction Qualitative ResearchIs a type of research in which the researcher depends on the views and opinions of the participants. Qualitative research normally asks general questions and the materials it uses are mostly pictures and words.

Qualitative ApproachThe qualitative approach to gathering

information focuses on describing a phenomenon in a detailed way. This is generally done in interviews, open-ended questions,

or focus groups.

In most cases, a small number of candidates participate in this type of research. Because of the small number of participants, findings from qualitative research cannot be generalized to the whole population.

Advantages and Disadvantages of  Qualitative Approach

1. Allows identification of new and untouched phenomena.

2. Reveals information that may not be identified through survey questions.

• It is time consuming.• It can not be generalized.

Abstract• Throughout my years of teaching English, I have

met many English language learners who say “sink” instead of “think“, “sank” instead of “thank”, “zis” instead of “this” and etc. This happened from primary school to university level students.

• Many other teachers have faced the same problem and discussed the ways they have tried to eradicate or at least reduce it, few of them have had success.

Page 6: Qualitative research

A large number of students who I have taught so far keep repeating these errors. The problem mostly comes from previous experience students have with other teachers . some teachers just do not really pay attention to students pronunciation.

There are students who know how to make the sound but they forget producing it while speaking, and that is usually because they try to speak fast or imitate a native person who normally speaks fast, so they neglect making this particular sound correctly.

Sometimes this problem arises due to the student’s first language alphabet, for instance most Kurdish speakers fail to pronounce (th) sound because Kurdish alphabet does not posses this sound.

Conclusion1. An effective technique to solve this

problem is to explain to students that the only way to correctly make the "th" sound is to stick their tongue out.

Page 8: Qualitative research

The teacher can model saying a list of words, phrases and tongue-twisters that contain (th) and then have the students pronounce them too.

Other materials can be used such as, audio books, news articles, videos and songs with their texts. Students can

listen to them with headphones or loud speakers in class and repeat the words that contain (th).
