MEDICALEMERGENCIES

For AMBULANCE SERVICE call 911. This number contacts the BC Ambulance Dispatch in Victoria.

1. Give the dispatcher full par-ticulars …name, telephone number, location & the prob-lem. Don’t hang up until the dispatcher has hung up.

2. The dispatcher activates the pagers of the ambulance crew on Quadra Island, who immediately phone Victoria for details.

3. The ambulance crew pro-ceeds to the accident/illness scene. (HELP THEM FIND YOU by having someone greet the ambulance, if possible, at your driveway entrance.)

4. Depending on the seri-ousness of the problem, the patient may be treated on Quadra Island or taken to Campbell River for further medical attention.

The non-emergency number for the BC Ambulance Service is: 286-1155. The non-emer-gency number for BC Am-bulance service/Station 170 Quadra Island is 285-3900 and fax 285-3979. The BC Nurse Line is 1-866-215-4700.

Precious time is often wasted when the ambu-lance crew has di�culty locating an address. Some houses have no numbers. Some have numbers that can only be seen from one direction. Some have numbers that are too small, or faded so much they can’t be seen. Some numbers are covered by greenery.

Ideally the numbers should be about 4 feet o� the ground, 4-6 inches tall and easily seen from both directions of travel.

Place address numbers at the end of the driveway so emergency services can �nd the address before they drive down a long driveway. Having the number on the house alone is okay only if it can be seen easily from the road on a dark night. Some properties have more than one dwelling and these should be clearly marked as 123-A, 123-B etc.
