Quadrilaterals Family Tree
QuadrilateralsFamily Tree
This ppt is about Quadrilaterals and how one set of quadrilaterals are related.1
Quadrilaterals Traits
Quadrilaterals Must Have: 4 sides2D shape4 anglesStraight sides
We are going to first talk about Quadrilaterals and their characteristics or traits. Quadrilaterals must all have 4 sides (hence the latin word quad means 4). They must all be 2 D figures and have 4 angles. Being a polygon they must be made of straight sides2
Special Quadrilaterals
There are a few special quadrilaterals. These 5 quadrilaterals have similar traits. The traits that they may have are based on sides, angles and number of parallel sides (anywhere from 1 set that are parallel to 2 sets or pairs that are parallel). Remember parallel means that the lines cannot touch ever!3
Parallelogram
Has 2 sets of Parallel Lines
Opposite sides are equal
Opposite angles are equal
A REAL chick magnet!!!
The first shape is the Parallelogram. Parallelogram is the father to most of the special quadrilaterals. In his younger days he was said to be as handsome as the day is long. He was known as the Chick Magnet on campus and won many a girls heart. He was seen this way because of his traits of 2 sets of parallel lines, opposite sides that are equal and opposite angles that are equal. But, unlike him, his brother , Trapezoid, had much to be desired4
Unlike his brother, Parallelogram,Trapezoid has:
1 pair of Parallel sides
Opposite angles and sides are not always equal.
Trapezoid
Now Trapezoid wasnt handsome, by any means or stretch of the imagination. But he was very smart. He would be the one who would think of many math theories and ponder over them day and night. Because of this he became CEO of a huge Physics lab in Washington DC. Trapezoid was different than Parllelogram. He only had 1 pr of parallel lines and his opposite sides and angles were not always equal. He was one that was said to be married to his work. Unlike his brother Parallelogram who got married and had 3 children.5
Rectangle is like his father, Parallelogram. He has:
Opposite sides that are equal
2 pr of Parallel lines
BUT unlike Dad: He has 4- 90 angles Child #1: Rectangle
Parallelograms first child was named Rectangle. (click , click) Just like you may look like your parents, or aunts or grandparents, Rectangle looked like his dad in a few ways. He had opposite sides that were equal. He also had 2 pair of parallel lines. But unlike his dad, he had 4 angles that were all the same right angles at 90 degrees.6
Child #2: RhombusRhombus looks like his father, Parallelogram where they both have:2 sets of parallel linesOpposite angles are equal
BUT Rhombus is different where all of his sides are equal!
The second child was named Rhombus. Click, click. Rhombus looked like his dad in a couple of ways also. He had 2 sets of parallel lines and his opposite angles were equal. He was different from his dad because all of his sides were the same length.
That brings us to the third child. A beauty among beauties7
Now Square was a beauty!!
Like her father, she had
2 sets of parallel lines
But unlike her father:All sides are equalAll angles are equal (90)
Child #3: Square
SQUARE! Click, click , Click, click She looked like her dad because she had 2 sets of parallel lines, but that was all. She was different because she had all sides the same and all of her angles were 90 degress. She was a true Marilyn Monroe!8
Make the family tree for these 5 special Quadrilaterals: Parallelogram, Trapezoid, Rectangle, Rhombus, and Square. Label their 3 characteristics that were mentioned: side length, angle measurement and number of pairs of parallel lines. You may or may not have them look like the part. Use white computer paper for your work.
Turn these in when you are done.In Conclusion Your Assignment
