Synopsis of Featured Shakespeare Play

A man named King Lear, the monarch of ancient Britain, is stepping down from his throne and wants to split his power and give it to his three daughters: Cordelia (the youngest and his favorite of the three), Regan, and Goneril. He plans to give the biggest part of his kingdom to the one who shows him the most love, positive that Cordelia would earn it. But Regan and Goneril act sweet for their greedy reasons to get the kingdom, while Cordelia refuses to fight over her father’s realm, making her father mad. She states that she loves him like a daughter should love her own father. King Lear then refuses to acknowledge her because of her statement. When his friend the Earl of Kent tries to explain to King Lear Cordelia’s reasoning, he is exiled out of the kingdom.

The King of France marries Cordelia after hearing her honest reply to King Lear. Kent secretly remains hidden in the kingdom to protect his close friend King Lear from his two elder daughters. He stays as close to King Lear as he possibly can.

King Lear finally gives his power to both of his daughters. When King Lear and a few loyal companions, including the disguised Kent, try to live with Goneril, she treats her father like an elderly man while he’s on her property. King Lear then tries to live with his other daughter, Regan, sending Kent with a letter in advance to let her know of his arrival. He arrives to learn that Kent is being kept in the stocks. The two sisters plan to murder the king. Gloucester, who learns of their plan, immediately heads out to warn Kent and King Lear. Gloucester’s illegitimate son, Edmund, wants his father’s lands and title. The lies he tells make Gloucester say he will kill Edgar, his legitimate son. Edgar disguises himself as a crazy man called “Poor Tom” and escapes.

Regan’s husband gashes out Gloucester’s eyes and fatally injures a servant who tries to help him. Cordelia rushes to Lear with an army to fight against her two sisters. Cordelia is defeated and then sentenced to death by Edmund. Both evil sisters fall in love with Edmund. Goneril poisons Regan to get rid of her rival, then kills herself when she learns that Edmund has been fatally wounded by Edgar, Gloucester’s long lost son. With Edmund’s last few words,

he atones for his sins. The cancellation for Cordelia’s execution comes too late and she is hanged. King Lear is overcome with grief and dies atop his

daughter Cordelia. —Vivian Huynh, Dana Middle School, Hawthorne

Synopsis of Featured Shakespeare Play

The Merry Wives of WindsorFalstaff (a con man) tries to deceive two rich women into liking

him, so later he can blackmail them and get their money. When the two women find out about his plan they decide to have some fun and go along with the plan.

One of the women, Mistress Page, has a daughter, Anne, who is now old enough to get married. Mistress Page wants her to get married to Doctor Caius, Anne’s father wants her to marry Master Slender, while Anne is in love with Master Fenton.

Mistress Ford’s (the other wife) husband, Mr. Ford, finds out about Falstaff ’s plan and gets jealous. He makes an alias name for himself, “Mr. Brooke,” and talks to Falstaff. “Mr. Brooke” decides to sneak up on them, but when he does, the two women hide Falstaff in a dirty laundry basket as a joke. The next time when Mr. Ford tried to sneak up on them, the women disguised Falstaff as Mistress Ford’s maid, whom Mr. Ford detests. Instead of catching the wife, he kicks the maid (i.e., Falstaff ) out of the house.

Later, the women tell their husbands the tricks they had been playing and decide to do one more. They tell Falstaff to dress up as Herne the Hunter (a ghost) and meet them at Windsor Park. They dress other people in the town to be fairies. Mistress Page tells Anne to dress up in a green gown during the party, so that Doctor Caius and she can get married. Mr. Page and Slender say the same except with a white gown. Anne tells Fenton about this and they decide to find a way to get married. At the “surprise” party, Falstaff comes in as Herne the Hunter and the “fairies” immediately attack him.

Fenton, Caius and Slender take their “Anne’s” while the others reveal their true identities. Later, Slender comes back and tells everyone that it was not Anne he took with him, but only a young boy. Caius says the same thing, only he married the boy. Fenton and Anne tell Mr. and Mrs. Page that they have been married and love each other very much. In the end, everyone walks back to the town happy, even Falstaff.
