Introduction
Quad bike safety is a priority for WorkSafe Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government. The Quad Bike Safety campaign 2019-20 draws attention to the alarming number of quad bike fatalities that have occurred in Australia over the last eight years, and some of the recurring contributing factors, namely lack of helmet use, inadequate training, and the young age and inexperience of riders. The campaign aims to create positive change amongst quad bike riders by encouraging them to always ‘Ride Safe’. This means always wearing a helmet when on a quad bike, ensuring anyone riding a quad bike has been provided with appropriate training, adopting an ‘active’ riding style when using a quad bike and never allowing children to ride adult-sized quad bikes.
This package provides content across different media channels for you to share this campaign and its important messages with your stakeholders. Please do not change any of the facts, so the content remains correct.

Quad Bike Safety Campaign
A quad bike can be useful equipment on a farm, but it can have serious safety risks when used incorrectly.
Every year, quad bikes are among the leading cause of death and serious injury on Australian farms.
Many of these deaths are due to rollovers where riders die from asphyxiation, crush and head injuries.

Follow these tips to be quad bike safe.
Before you ride • Decide if a quad bike is the right vehicle for the activity • Maintain the quad bike in a safe condition• Read the operator manual and follow the manufacturer’s safety warnings• Tell someone where you plan to go and when you expect to return.
Use the right safety gear
• Always wear a properly fitting helmet and protective clothing such as goggles, long sleeves, long pants, boots and gloves/hand protection
• Fit a crush protection device to your quad bike.
Get training• Make sure you’re properly trained before you ride a quad bike.
Don’t take unnecessary risks• Don’t carry passengers on quad bikes • Avoid riding on uneven terrain or steep slopes• Carry a mobile phone or radio device to use in case of an emergency • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs• Only carry accessories and attachments you need.
Quad bikes and children
• Never let children ride quad bikes that are designed for adults, not even as passengers • Do not let children under 6 years of age ride any quad bike and children under 16 years of
age should not ride adult size quad bikes • Supervise children at all times near any quad bike activity• Remove the keys from the quad bike when not in use.

A quad bike can be useful equipment on a farm, but it can have serious safety risks when used incorrectly.
Every year quad bikes are among the leading cause of death and serious injury on Tasmanian farms.
What are the risks? Many deaths are due to rollovers where riders die from asphyxiation, crush and head injuries.
Quad bikes can roll over in any direction – to the front, side or back — and can happen even at low speeds. The risk of a rollover increases if you’re travelling across uneven ground or slopes, at high speed, towing an attachment or carrying a heavy or unstable load.

Survive the ride
Protect yourself• Wear a properly fitting compliant
helmet—it’s the best protection you have against a head injury.
• Wear eye protection, gloves, sturdy footwear and clothing that covers arms and legs.
• Employers should ensure that personal protective equipment such as helmets are used and worn by workers, and workers who are provided with personal protective equipment must wear a helmet and use other safety gear as required.
Think before you act• Stick to tracks and paths that you
know. Recognise creeks and gullies and steep areas that are dangerous to ride in, and keep out of these no-go zones.
• Look out for rough or uneven ground, especially after rain or flooding.
Adopt a ‘safety-first’ attitude
• Reduce your speed, especially if you are on rough or uneven ground that might cause you to lose control.
• If you’re not confident that you can do the job, speak up and ask for help.
• Do not be tempted to carry passengers if the bike is not designed for it—how would you feel if your mate fell off your bike and was seriously injured?
• Make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
• Riding after using drugs or drinking alcohol is not a good move.
Only carry what you need to
• Remove attachments and loads that you don’t need. Towing and attachments add to the overall weight and instability of the bike.
• Take extra care when carrying liquid loads as the weight will shift when turning corners or crossing slopes making the bike unstable.
Get ahead of the pack• Ask your parents or employer about
quad bike training to improve your riding skills in all situations.
Quad bike safety tips for young workersQuad bikes can be deadly for children, teenagers and adults when used incorrectly. Rider behaviour and not wearing helmets have contributed to serious incidents.
