For many of us, the love of live performance started early in our lives when a parent or family friend took us along as children to see a ballet performance, play or concert.

At QPAC, we have a strong belief in the value of nurturing children’s creativity and imagination. Our biennial Out of the Box festival is a national leader in art programs for children eight years and under. It will celebrate 20 years when it returns in June 2012 with a rich program of performances, events and activities.

Our support of KITE Arts Education @ QPAC, supports the delivery of relevant, contemporary arts education experiences for Prep to Year 3 students and teachers across Queensland. KITE is an early childhood arts education initiative of the Queensland Department of Education and Training in partnership with QPAC.

Working with communities with least access to the arts, KITE creates and facilitates performances, participative arts projects, professional development services and partnerships. Recently, over 70 students from three schools in the Logan area performed their own work at QPAC in front of parents, grandparents, carers and invited guests as the culmination of months of work with KITE teacher artists. It was a very proud moment for both the children and their families.

There are many great opportunities to introduce children and families to performance at QPAC in the coming months. Favourites from literature and television come to life, a well-loved fairy tale is retold in dance, a nervous mouse faces her big ballet audition, and The Wizard of Oz lands at the Playhouse. The Wizard of Oz lands at the Playhouse. The Wizard of Oz

With these, plus other highlights including Mary Poppins and the opening Mary Poppins and the opening Mary Poppinsperformances of the 2012 seasons of Queensland Ballet, Queensland Theatre Company and Queensland Symphony Orchestra, I hope to see you at QPAC soon.

Swan Lake holds a cherished place in the repertoire. Swan Lake holds a cherished place in the repertoire. Swan LakeFrançois Klaus’s spectacular interpretation of this classic ballet honours its rich choreographic heritage (including the traditional ‘White Swans’ second act), whilst deftly creating a new narrative that culminates in the migration of the great Russian ballet tradition to the Western world.

Ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska was one of the stars of The Imperial Ballet in its golden years of the late 19th century. While living in exile in France after the Russian Revolution, she wrote a memoir of her life and romance with Tsar Nicholas II. François Klaus saw parallels between their tragic story and the tale of doomed love between the Swan Queen, Odette, and Prince Siegfried. His ballet chronicles an epic story of devotion and betrayal, with lavish sets and costumes, thrilling dance and the glorious music of Tchaikovsky.

After 25 years of gigs in venues all over the world, from the Village Hall to the Royal Albert Hall, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain comes to QPAC for the very fi rst time.

Bringing only their ‘bonsai guitars’, and the belief that all musical genres are available for reinterpretation (as long they are played on the uke!), The Ukulele Orchestra does away with drums, piano, backing tracks, pitch shifters and electronic trickery. With a virtuosic collision of raw post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies – from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks – the Orchestra is routinely met with standing ovations.

Modern exercise in minimal art? Or a rabble-rousing music hall/stadium rock experience? Either way, you’ll never think about music in the same way.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

The world’s most acclaimed vocal ensemble makes their long awaited return to Australia with a wonderfully varied program of classical, jazz and pop favourites.

Combining sparkling virtuosity with tender lyricism, Chopin’s First Piano Concerto is an ideal vehicle for the unique talents of Polina Leschenko.

Although Górecki is best known for his haunting and heartfelt Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, his Piano Concerto bristles with driving rhythms and energy.

Mendelssohn’s Octet is a staple of the ACO’s repertoire, its carefree exuberance belying its fi endish technical intricacies.

The tonal riches of the ACO’s three legendary violins – Stradivari, Guarneri and Guadagnini – are revealed in Richard Tognetti’s specially created arrangement of Paganini’s dazzling Caprices.

‘The enthusiasm and tightness of the ACO was nowhere better shown than in the Mendelssohn with its joyful, sweeping opening movement, quicksilver scherzo and romping closing fi gure.’ CUMBERLAND NEWSPAPERS.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra bursts into 2012 with Maestro Gerard Schwarz. Acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic, the Maestro conducts Shostakovich’s truly epic Tenth Symphony, hailed by many as his fi nest. This is a work where, in its supposed portrait of the dictator Josef Stalin in all his grim power, the music reaches levels of almost indescribable tension and profound emotional intensity, ultimately released by euphoria of the fi nale. Stephen Kovacevich, has been beguiling audiences with the colour, warmth and transcendent lyricism of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto for almost half a century. Now it’s Brisbane’s turn to celebrate Kovacevich’s 70th birthday and the magic he weaves with the QSO.

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll BY RAY LAWLER

Every summer, cane-cutters Barney and Roo come back from Queensland to the Carlton house they share with Nancy and Olive for an annual season of fun and frivolity.

But this summer is different. Nancy has gone and got married, Roo is fl at broke, and the friends just can’t seem to recreate the chemistry of years gone by. After 17 years, could this really be the end?

The Doll is one of the pillars of our national theatre. The Doll is one of the pillars of our national theatre. The DollAustralian playwriting came of age with the premiere of this play in 1955. Set in an inner-city Melbourne townhouse and fi lled with quintessential Australian language of the era, it was the fi rst time we saw ourselves truly refl ected on stage.

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll is a classic, must-see Summer of the Seventeenth Doll is a classic, must-see Summer of the Seventeenth Dollplay about the nature of happiness, the destruction of idealism, and the struggle to accept change and fi nd life anew.

Exhibition: Mary & Me Mary Poppins and her creator P.L. Travers

WHEN from 13 DecemberWHERE Tony Gould GalleryFREE EVENT

PRESENTED BY QPAC

Few literary characters inhabit a life of their own the way Mary Poppins has.

When the sometimes stern and often magical nanny fi rst appeared in print in 1934, she already seemed oddly familiar. Queensland-born author P.L. Travers insisted that she didn’t invent the character, but merely wrote her down. Wherever she came from, Mary Poppins has delighted children and adults alike for decades.

She has appeared in a series of books written by Travers, a much-loved Disney fi lm featuring Julie Andrews and now in a spectacular stage musical.

Mary & Me looks at this remarkable journey from page to Mary & Me looks at this remarkable journey from page to Mary & Mestage and features original papers from the P.L. Travers collections from the Mitchell Library at the State Library of New South Wales, archival video and costumes from the current musical version of Mary Poppins.
