The  life  of  the  average  commerce  student  is,  as  one  might  typically  imagine,  a  combination  of  multiple  business  meetings,  intense  preparation  for  a  multitude  of  exams  in  a  variety  of  subjects,  a  suit  for  every  day  of  the  week,  and  a  ceaseless  nose-‐to-‐the-‐grindstone  work  ethic.  It  does  not,  in  general,  offer  the  opportunity  to  engage  in  activities  that  create  a  truly  well-‐rounded  individual  and,  in  particular,  those  of  the  performing  arts.  It  is  rarely  a  matter  of  inability,  as  the  qualities  that  form  a  great  artist  so  often  could  form  a  great  businessperson,  but  commerce  students  lack  a  safe  space  conducive  to  the  needs  of  their  fast-‐paced,  jam-‐packed  life.

This  idea  of  fostering  qualities  of  excellence  through  the  conduit  of  the  performing  arts  is  the  founding  motivation  behind  Queen’s  Commerce  Performing  Artists.  Students  involved  with  this  organization  are  able  to  develop  as  businesspeople  in  two  overarching  ways.  Firstly,  students  are  able  to  gain  first-‐hand  business  experience  in  marketing,  finance,  logistics,  and  general  management  -‐  acquiring  these  experiences  with  a  specific  niche  in  the  arts  management.  Secondly,  involved  students  are  able  to  develop  broadly  applicable  soft-‐skills  that  one  simply  cannot  pick  up  in  any  other  way.  For  instance,  developing  one’s  skills  as  an  improv  actor  would  in  turn  help  develop  their  improvisational  skills  when  faced  with  having  to  give  a  last-‐second  presentation  to  a  client  and  participating  in  small  musical  groups  helps  to  develop  team-‐based  interactional  and  cooperative  techniques.

Now  entering  our  inaugural  year,  this  organization  is  looking  to  truly  make  a  change  to  the  landscape  of  the  business  community  as  we  know  it  by  fostering  a  tradition  of  excellence  in  a  revolutionary  way  that  no  other  group  has  yet  been  able  to  do.  With  your  help,  we  look  to  bring  true  heart  and  soul  into  the  world  of  commerce  and  create  an  unparalleled  outlet  of  creative  expression  and  development  of  business  acumen  in  the  next  generation  of  leaders.  Thank  you  for  taking  the  time  to  consider  our  proposition.  We  look  forward  to  discussing  further  potential  for  partnership  with  our  organizations.

Sincerely,

Ian  Dickinson  |  Co-‐Chair             Antony  Discenza  |  Co-‐Chair

WHAT IS QCPA?

1

Queen’s   Commerce   Performing   Artists   is   an   organization  brought   to   life   through   the   arts-‐driven   passion   of   Commerce  students  at  the  Queen’s  School  of  Business.

Artistic  extracurricular  involvement  was  once  hard  to  find  at  the  Queen’s   School   of   Business,   despite   the   talents   of   the   student  body.   There  has   been   a   clear   demand   for   an   organization   that  will   create   opportunities   for   artistic   expression.  QCPA   fills   that  demand  through  a  number  of  initiatives.

QCPA  strives  to  help  students  foster  applicable  commerce  skills  in   a   creative   environment   through   professional   development  workshops,   managerial   positions,   and   professional   networking  opportunities.  We  also  aim  to  use  those  talents  to  the  benefit  of  the  community  by  providing  musical  entertainment  for  a  variety  of  Commerce  Society  conferences  and  other  events  throughout  the  year.

While  providing  a  creative  outlet  for  students,  QCPA  effectively  allows   students   to   practice   their   business   skills   through   their  passions.

Our  Mission

Collaboration,  Challenge,  Change.    Collaboration   with   one   another;   with   the  Queen’s   and   Kingston   Community;   and   the  broader  world  of  arts.      Challenge   ourselves   as   artists   and   business  people.      Change  what  it  means  to  be  truly  excellent.
