The 2813-0-0 is pre-loaded with product firmware that allows it tocommunicate with the Kinetix 300 drive and ScreenMaker 2813software. The firmware can be updated through the USB portusing the 2813 Firmware Loader program available at theQuartechCorp.com web site.

The Windows operating systems require USB communicationdrivers be installed before an attached device becomes useful.Windows includes some drivers for very common devices such as flash drives. The 2813 microcontroller includes a manufacturersbuilt in USB boot loader. The Windows compatible drive ispublished on the Windows update site. In most cases when the2813 is plugged into the USB port on your computer Windows will

access the update site, download and automatically install the driver. If you are not connected to the internet then thisis obviously not possible. Even when connected to the internet the driver may not be automatically installed for‘mysterious’ reasons. The 2813 Firmware Loader includes the USB driver, however, user involvement is required.

The instructions for installing the driver varies for different Windows operating systems.

The 2813 Firmware Loader software must be installed on your computer, however , it can not install unlessScreenMaker 2813 Kinetix 300 software is first installed. Both programs are available at the QuartechCorp.comweb site for free.

So, assuming you have installed the software...

To begin, slide DIP switch four to the on position. Switches one, two, and three mustbe in the off position. Connect the 2191 cable between the 2813 and your computer.Apply power to the 2813.

NOTE:The 2813 LCD is blankduring firmware loading.

The activity produced on you computer screen will vary based on theoperating system you are running. You should allow Windows to attemptan automatic installation from the Windows update site. You may be requiredto interact with several dialogs during the installation. That is normal.

If the automatic driver installation fails then follow the instructions for your operating system included in thisdocument. When the driver installation is complete go to the firmware update instructions section of this documentto review the required steps for a successful update.

Windows 8.1

The first time 2813 is plugged into the USB porton your computer it should attempt to install adriver from the Windows Update site. An iconwill appear on the task bar and fill with green toindicate progress. Clicking the icon will openthe Device Setup dialog giving you a betterview of the process.

If you get the message USB device not recognizedthen first try unplugging then re-plugging the USB cable.If that does not solve the problem then follow theinstructions below to complete the driver installation.

The 2813 Firmware Loader includes a third party program that allows you to view attached USB devices. Theprogram is provided in both a 32 bit and 64 bit executable. No short cut was made for these executables so youwill need to locate and run them from within Windows Explorer. If you installed ScreenMaker in the default locationthen the executable is located at C:\Program Files\2813\USB Drivers\USBDeview(x86).exe. If you are running a64 bit operating system then the path is C:\Program Files (x86)\2813\USB Drivers\USBDeview(x64).exe.Double-click the appropriate executable start the program. Under the ‘Serial Number’ column locate STM32 thenmake note of the Device Name associated with it. Close the program.

From the desktop, right-click the Windows icon and choose Device Manager. In thedevice manager look for an unknown device that has a yellow exclamation icon nextto it. Right-click on it and choose Properties.

Verify that the Port and Hub numbers are the same a seen in theUSBDeview executable previously run. If they are correct thenclick the Update Driver button.

When the Update Driver Software dialog opens select: Browse my computer for driver software. If this is thefirst time you connected the 2813 you may want to try the automatic search option first.

Click the Browse button then locate the Windows 7 + 8 folder.

If you installed ScreenMaker in the default location the path is: C:\Program Files\2813\USB Drivers\.

If you are running a 64 bit operating system then the path is: C:\Program Files (x86)\2813\USB Drivers\.

After selecting the Windows 7 + 8 folder click the Next button

If you get the ‘Windows Security’ message select the installoption. If all goes well the success message is displayed.

To verify the installation you can again run the USBDeview again and see if the Connected status is Yes.

Windows 7If you get a message stating the device is not recognized or not successfully installed then first try unpluggingthen re-plugging the USB cable. If that does not solve the problem then follow the instructions below to completethe driver installation.

Windows XPThe first time you power the 2813 the Found New Hardware popup (left image) will display. If you are connectedto the internet then try letting Windows automatically install the driver. The right image will display if the 2813 hasbeen previously connected but driver installation failed. Try the manual installation described below.

Click the start icon then choose Control Panel. Within theControl Panel double click the Add Hardware icon. If youdo not see the Add Hardware icon insure the Control Panelis displaying in Classic View mode.

The dialog shown to the right will display.Click the Next button to continue.

The Hardware Wizard will open and search for devicesthat are not correctly installed.

The Hardware Wizard will ask if the hardware is connected.It should have remained connected so choose yes and clickthe Next button.

When the wizard is done searching you should see alisting for the STM32 0x418 DFU Bootloader. Click itso that it is highlighted then click the Next button.

The wizard will indicate the driver for this deviceIs not installed.

Click the Finish button to proceed

We don’t want Windows to access the update site so chooseNo, not this time and click the Next button.

Now choose the (Advanced) option and click theNext button.

Now select:Search for the best driver in these locationsand check:Include this location in the searchthen...Click the Browse button.

In the Browse for Folder dialog locate the Windows XPfolder. If ScreenMaker was installed in the default locationthen the path is:C:\Program Files\Quartech\2813USB Drivers\

Click the Next button to accept the folder.

If you receive the compatibility warningjust click the Continue Anyway button.

Windows will automatically create a restore pointthen proceed with the driver installation.The process takes only a couple of minutes.

Windows will indicate a successful installation bydisplaying the dialog shown here.

Click the Finish button to close the dialog.

Firmware Load InstructionsStart the 2813 Firmware Loader application from the installed shortcut. If the 2813 has not been detected thenrefer back to the driver installation section for your Windows operating system. The detected device may be listedas STM Device in DFU Mode or Quartech Product in STM DFU Mode.

After the 2813 is detected, click the Select aFirmware File button. The file open dialog allowsyou to locate the firmware file. If the application wasinstalled at the default location then the path to thefirmware file will be: C:\Program Files\Quartech\2813\Loader\ C:\Program Files (x86)\... on 64 bit systems.

Current and past release versions of the firmwarewill be available so choose carefully.

Upon return to the application form you will see the selected file listed.

Insure the Verify after download checkbox ischecked. Click the Download Firmware to 2813button to initiate the load. The progress bar at thebottom of the form will indicate the status. Once theload is complete a verification will start.

If the process completes successfully then click theClose Loader button, power-down the 2813,disconnect the USB cable, and turn DIP switch fouroff. Loading firmware does not affect the projectwithin the 2813. Insure the project loaded iscompatible with the firmware loaded.
