QUESTION 5 How did you attract/address your aduience?

Textual analysis • The connotations of the purple and blues connote royalty

and wealth, this not only has an appeal factor to both of my target audiences but it also gives my brand instant attraction as audiences will see it as an expensive product, only for the best.

• The cover page is loud and expressive, it uses bold fonts and a prominent focal image. These features demonstrate connotations of power and confidence, whilst also encouraging the VAL type of an experiencer, as they are seen to be creative and loud.

• The model is in a medium shot, with her eyes looking straight into the camera. These elements once again demonstrate confidence and empowerment, which is one of the main ideologies that I wanted to incorporate within my magazine as I knew it would appeal to secondary audience, as I aimed my secondary audience at homosexuals and anyone in a minority group , alone with other people who enjoyed the music from the very start. This is something that would be seen as subverting expectations as mainstream genres often target there products at mainstream audiences . However I knew from my genre appeal to a wider audience than just a mainstream young group of people and therefore incorporated cover lines and articles that encouraged empowerment.

• The slight reflection of light on the models face, has connotations of power and importance. Audiences associate important people with a certain spotlight, this beam of light mimics this idea and therefore demonstrates her importance in the music industry.

• The distinct difference between the background colour and the Page names has connotations of difference , an idea of wanting to be heard and confidence. This therefore appealing to my secondary audience and the brand identity that I intended to create of empowerment and standing out.

• The use of social media links, in the top right hand corner, demonstrate to my audience that the “subculture” understand there target audience and the recent move in technology. We live in a generation that relies on the means of social media activity and if a company were to not take advantage of this form of below the line marketing, they would be missing out on a large opportunity to make a name for there brand.

• The purple splat has connotations of power and confidence, the idea of making a mark on something stereotypical conventional and mainstream. The purple splat demonstrates an idea of power and integrity. Which links to the ideologies linked with my secondary audience.

The images used within the double page spread could be seen as post modern, as they encourage a supernatural, almost alien like ideology through the use of makeup and lighting. The gold makeup on the models cheek bones resemble fish scales , demonstrating to the audience that something about this artist is going to subvert some sort of stereotypical convention. In this case, it is the genre of music.

The collection of images are all taken from different lengths and angles, varying from medium close ups - close ups- high angles. These shot types encourage conventions of confidence and we the audience are shown all angles of this person, making her venerable to our eye, however from the use to pose and posture we know that the artist is empowered and wants us to look and her and enjoy her presence.

The contrast between the red and purple light, has connotations of power and a clash of normality. With the colour red connoting strength and excitement , and with the colour blue connoting coolness and serenity. These connotation mimic the characteristics of house music and therefore give the reader an insight into the type of music that they would be listening too.

The written article takes up around three quarters of the page, indicating to the audience that the artist has a lot to say and show off, once again connoting confidence and self love. However the type of audience that would want to read an article of that length would be more sophisticated than that of an audience that would be considered fox thinkers and therefore less sophisticated. This is due to the attention span of the audience, a more sophisticated audience would be willing to read an article of length and would be less likely to become distracted by images and other elements included within the page. Whereas fox thinkers/ a younger less sophisticated audience would be easier distracted and lose interest before reaching the end of the article.

Audience theory Us as an audience, react differently to different messages projected at us by

the media. We have found that over generations of mass media production, the power that the media has over the consumer is monumental and without us realizing it, we are being controlled by what the media and their messages. Stereotypes are a result of this, because we as an audience are so used to seeing certain categories of people being portrayed in a specific way, we accept that that is their characteristic or that is how they should look or act. The hypodermic needle theory encourages the idea that the media “inject” messages into us, these messages are received and accepted without any questioning, therefore we have been influence by the messages of the media without us even realising it. I avoided incorporating this theory within my article in a negative way, as I did not want to undermine my audience , I wanted them to feel that they could make the decision for themselves rather than it being injected into them. However I did use cover lines that encourage the ideology , for example “The best of what is trending” a quote that suggests that even if you as an individual do not enjoy the listed songs, everyone else will, and therefore you should too . This encourages the audience to talk about the article and the artists spoken about , making them passive. My target audience is that of a younger group of people , who are fox thinkers, making them influential and naive., however for my magazine, this audience type is a benefit for my potential success , as the main audience I am targeting towards believe that they are enjoying the chosen music, when in theory they are just being influenced by the media.
