Evaluation question three

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Page 2: Q3

As a media studies class we watched everyone’s music video in the lesson and other class members gave their feedback on the different music videos. In the class, for my music video I only got back positive feedback. I didn’t agree that all the feedback should be positive so I asked a group of random people within the sixth form (who I thought represented the target audience) to watch and give their true feedback on my music video- what they thought was good and what they thought was not so good.

Audience Profile of the sixth formers…I asked a mixture of year 12 and year 13 girls (a few of them had chosen media as one of their A-levels). To build up an audience profile I asked them what they liked and disliked in general.

What they liked

Rock music, waking up early, spiders, heavy metal, the rain, What they disliked

Going to the cinema, listening to music, going out with friends, boy bands, pop music, dance music, the colour pink, buying new clothes, going to the hairdressers, the Summer and reading the Heat magazine.

Positive Feedback “I liked how you used a variety of different shots”“The narrative was shown very clearly and was easy to follow and understand”“The guitar was very appropriate to Taylor Swift”“I liked how there was a flashback when Taylor Swift’s crush helped her pick up her folders”

“I really liked how you used the flickering through the book when the lyrics said ‘story’ and the book appeared”

“It was good how your actress wore glasses just like Taylor Swift wears in the official ‘You Belong With Me’ video”

“The dissolves you used to transition to the next shot looked very professional”

“I liked your first shot when the lyrics said ‘You’re on the phone with your girlfriend’ and there was your actor on the phone, it really represented a Taylor Swift music video well”

“I like how you were up to date with technology by using an email”

Negative Feedback

“The first shot is too long” What we should have done was included another shot from when the camera is just focused on the bed.“In the corridor the camera is shaky” This is a true comment, to have made this shot steady we should have used the tripod as well instead of using the handheld camera.“Little bit cheesy”I agree, but we wanted the music video to appeal to the younger end of our target audience, as well as the older end. As the narrative was about love it was hard to avoid the music video being cheesy.

“I didn’t think the shot that involved the mirror was very clear.”For this shot, what we tried to do was film our actress dressing up in different clothes. This is why we included this shot. What we should have done to make the shot clearer was change the angle of the camera so we would have different views of our actress trying on the different outfits. “The shot where the lead male is walking down the drive is too long, and the lighting didn’t seem to fit in.” I agree that the shot where our actor is walking down the drive is too long. We did try to shorten the clip but it didn’t look right when we did, what we should’ve done was to using a transition or filmed another shot to achieve what we wanted from the clip. You are right about the lighting, as the lyrics had said ‘driving to your house in the middle of the night’ we wanted it to be night time. We did try to film this clip in the night but it was impossible to do and see the actors with the equipment we had. So instead we tried to alter the lighting on Adobe Premier Pro.

“I didn’t understand what the point was of the pompoms.”We included this shot as we wanted to include visuals that matched the lyrics to appeal to everyone in our target audience.

The audiences overall opinion on my music video

Overall…

Looking back at the audience feedback I would definitely edit the video and make changes. One change would be to use different angles to show and make clearer what was actually happening in the shots (for example the mirror shot). Another change would be to use more shots, so long shots don’t seem as lengthy. In conclusion, the audience feedback helped me personally as I was able to get a better understanding of what our target audience actually liked and what they didn’t like about our music video.
