MY EXPECTATION

FINAL OUTCOME

I wanted to demonstrate th is eff ect as I be l ieved the concept was both innovat ive and v isua l ly exc i t ing . I t was insp i red by d i rector Ian Pons Jewel l ’s composi t ion for Crysta l F ighter ’s song ‘Fo l low’ . The overa l l aesthet ic shown in my fi na l des ign, in my op in ion, was successfu l ly executed. I t fo l lowed my storyboard a lmost prec ise ly, however, on the day of fi lming I dec ided to te l l my actors to dance in the i r arrangements , therefore contrad ict ing my or ig ina l intent ion somewhat . The resu l t was more eff ect ive though, persona l ly, as the movement under l ines the character t ransfi gurat ion, p lus the pace co inc ides with the tune of the song. One deta i l that reduces the eff ect iveness of the footage was the occas iona l interrupt ion of so l id b lack mater ia l . Th is was un intent iona l ly inserted and was the consequence of error ; i t d isturbed the footage and demoted the i l lus ion s l ight ly.

The concept der ives f rom the 2013 S lender tone adver t , wh ich equa l l y embraces a th ree par t fl ipbook s ty le appearance . I deem the fi na l des ign , as a who le , to be eff ec t ive espec ia l l y combined w i th the “dance l i ke an awkward person” br ie f because i t added an in te res t ing ang le & refl ec ted the l igh t g roove – educ ing nature o f the me lody. I t con founded my expec ta t ions s l igh t ly as my o r ig ina l i n tent ion was to keep the backdrop min ima l , to d raw a t tent ion to the eff ec t i t se l f, however, I be l i eve the outcome i s much more a t t rac t i ve as the use o f co lour co r rec t ion and over lays co r responds w i th the res t o f the fi lm. In te rms o f c r i t ique , I w i sh I had a l igned the footage s t r ips hor i zonta l l y as the unevenness i s apparent w i th in the s l ide t rans i t ion , inc reas ing the amateur i sm.

On the cont rary, I th ink i t i s most eff ec t ive when mov ing footage i s l ayered on top , as opposed to s t i l l images , as the two confl ic t ing mot ions c reate a su r rea l sense , ampl i f y ing my o r ig ina l i n tent ion o f p resent ing psychede l i c qua l i t i es . I a l so cou ld ’ve imp lemented a more d ive rse range o f l ayer b lend modes to p roduce mu l t ip l i c i t y.

My ob jec t i ve was to por t ray an es tab l i sh ing shot o f my predominant l ocat ion to revea l where the ac t ion i s tak ing p lace and to es tab l i sh some contex t . One long -es tab l i sh ing shot was o r ig ina l l y supposed to be shown, fo r a four second durat ion , fea tur ing the fl i cker o f l i gh ts to co inc ide w i th the beat o f the song . The outcome, however, demonst ra ted th ree d iff erent es tab l i sh ing shots o f d i ss im i la r f rame s i zes . These shots were pos i t ioned between the min ima l d i sp lay o f the band and song name. I cons ider the outcome to be more eff ec t ive than my in i t i a l i dea as mu l t ip l i c i t y g rabs the a t tent ion o f the aud ience . I be l i eve I cou ld ’ve executed the open ing more eff ec t ive ly, however, by inc lud ing more long shots , so the aud ience cou ld d i s t ingu ish the appearance and s t ruc tu re o f the ent i re p remises . I a l so regre t ho ld ing the camera by hand in two shots as i t c reates an unstab le ex te r io r, seeming less p ro fess iona l .
