Last year, Edward Snowden downloaded tens of thousandsof top-secret documents from a highly secure governmentcomputer network. The revelations that followed touched offa fierce debate over the massive surveillance operations con-ducted by the National Security Agency. Now, in a specialtwo-part Frontline, “United States of Secrets” investigates thesecret history of the unprecedented surveillance program that be-gan in the wake of September 11th and continues today.
Through exclusive interviews with intelligence insiders, cabinet officials, and government whistle-blowers, part oneof “United States of Secrets” reveals how the U.S. govern-ment came to monitor the communications of millions ofAmericans and to collect billions of records on ordinarypeople around the world.
In the second part, Frontline explores the role of SiliconValley in the National Security Agency’s dragnet. As bigtechnology companies encouraged users to share more andmore information about their lives, they created a trove of datathat could be useful not simply to advertisers, but also to thegovernment. The revelations of NSA contractor EdwardSnowden would push Silicon Valley into the center of a de-bate over privacy and government surveillance.
“United States of Secrets” on Frontline airs Tuesday,May13th at 8:00 p.m. (Pt. 1, 2 hrs.) and repeats Thursday,May 15th at 7:00 p.m. Part 2 airs Tuesday, May 20th at 8:00p.m. and repeats Thursday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. On HD3-1, part 1 airs Tuesday, May 13th at 8:00 p.m. and repeatsWednesday, May 14th at 11:00 a.m. On HD3-1, part 2 airsTuesday, May 20th at 9:00 p.m. and repeats Wednesday, May21st at 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The case of NSA contractor Edward Snowden hasdivided America: to some he is a hero; to others a trai-tor. In The Trial of Edward Snowman, a well-placedcontractor for the NSA exposes a massive surveillanceprogram but then doesn’t flee the country to avoidprosecution. A panel of experts convene to imaginewhat might happen if such a case were brought to trial,in effect putting Snowden (renamed “Snowman”) on trial in absentia.
Panelists include former U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello; Pulitzer-Prize winning New York Times reporter and expert on the NSA, CharlesSavage; and Abbe D. Lowell of Chadbourne & Parke in Washington,D.C., who takes on the role of Snowman’s defense attorney. Other pan-elists include Michael Hayden, retired Air Force general and former di-rector of the CIA and NSA; Georgetown University constitutional law pro-fessor David D. Cole; and Harvard law professor and former federal judgeNancy Gertner.
The discussion begins with how the press and the NSA deal with leaks;how the government approaches the prosecution of such leaks; and howthe defense plans for trial. Other topics include whether or not someonein Snowman’s position is guilty of espionage or perhaps treason, i.e.,giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
If anyone wants to know exactly why the Snowden affair divides thenation, you’ll find the answer here as panelists argue passionately for theirviewpoints.
The Trial of Edward Snowman can be seen Tuesday, May 13th at10:00 p.m. and Friday, May 23rd at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, the programwill be broadcast Wednesday, May 14th at 4:30 p.m.
Colditz Castle, a notoriousprisoner of war camp in NaziGermany, was supposed to be es-cape-proof. But in World War II,a group of British officers dreamtup an escape plan: in a secret at-tic workshop, they constructed atwo-man glider out of bed sheetsand floorboards. The plan was tofly to freedom from the roof ofthe castle, but the war ended before they could put it to the test.
Now, in “Escape from Nazi Alcatraz,” a two-hour Nova, a teamof aero engineers and carpenters rebuilds the glider in the same atticusing the same materials, and they’ll use a bathtub full of concreteto catapult the glider off the roof.
As the hair-raising launch 90 feet up draws near, the program ex-plores the Colditz legend and exposes the secrets of other ingeniousand audacious escapes. Then, after a 70-year wait, the team finallyfinds out if the legendary glider plan would have succeeded.
“Escape from Nazi Alcatraz” on Nova airs Wednesday, May14th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, May 17th at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday,May 18th at 12:00 midnight. On HD3-1, it airs Wednesday, May 14that 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, May 15th at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
On June 6th, 1944, the Allieslaunched an armada to invade theNormandy beaches and liberate Eu-rope from the Nazis. In less than 24hours, more than 5,000 ships—thelargest armada in history—crossed theEnglish Channel, along with thou-sands of tanks and land craft and 200,000 men. Hundreds of shipssank while running the gauntlet of mines and bunkers, creating oneof the world’s largest underwater archaeological sites.
Now, Nova, in the two-hour “D-Day’s Sunken Secrets,” has ex-clusive access to an extensive survey of the seabed bordering thebeachheads. Dive teams, submersibles, and underwater robots iden-tify key examples of the Allied craft that fell victim to Germanshellfire, mines, and torpedoes.
The program presents a blow-by-blow account of D-Day eventsand reveals how the Allies’ intricate planning and advanced tech-nology were vital to assure the success of the most ambitious andrisky military operation ever launched.
“D-Day’s Sunken Secrets” on Nova will be broadcast Wednes-day, May 28th at 8:00 p.m. and repeats Sunday, June 1st at 12:00midnight. On HD3-1, it airs Wednesday, May 28th at 8:00 p.m. andSaturday, May 31st at 10:30 p.m.

“A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power, and Jayson Blair” on Indepen-dent Lens tells the shocking story of the most infamous serial plagiaristof our time, and how he unleashed the massive scandal that rocked TheNew York Times and the entire world of journalism.
In 2003, Jayson Blair was caught plagiarizing the work of other report-ers and supplementing his own reporting with fabricated details in doz-ens of stories published in the Times. The ensuing media frenzy left a majorblemish on the history of the “Old Grey Lady,” which just a year earlier wona record seven Pulitzer Prizes for its coverage of 9/11. It was a spectacular
fall for both Blair and the paper. The fact that Blair is African Ameri-can was emphasized again and again asaccounts of the “Blair Affair” served upsordid details in a soap-opera style taleof deception, drug abuse, racism, men-tal illness, hierarchy, white guilt, andpower struggles inside the hallowedhalls of the Times.
“A Fragile Trust” follows Blair as heslowly unravels in the face of mounting
pressures and distractions after his plagiarized article ultimately leads tohis undoing. The Jayson Blair scandal is an important chapter in the his-tory of journalism, but also a complex story about power, ethics, repre-sentation, race, and accountability in the mainstream media.
Featuring exclusive interviews with everyone involved, includingformer Executive Editor Howell Raines and Blair himself, “A FragileTrust” tells the whole sordid story of the scandal while exploring thesedeeper themes. With more and more publications moving to online-onlyformats and with plagiarism on the rise, this cautionary tale about theslippery slope of ethical transgressions is more relevant than ever.
“A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power, and Jayson Blair” on Indepen-dent Lens will be broadcast Monday, May 5th at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday,May 11th at 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, May 5th at 8:00 p.m.and Tuesday, May 6th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
One of the most acclaimed documentaries of the year,“God Loves Uganda” on Independent Lens explores the roleof the American evangelical movement in Uganda, whereAmerican missionaries have been credited with both creatingschools and hospitals and promoting dangerous religious big-otry. The 90-minute film follows evangelical leaders in Americaand Uganda along with politicians and missionaries as theyattempt to eliminate what they deem “sexual sin” and convertUgandans to fundamentalist Christianity.
“God Loves Uganda” records the tense atmosphere of fearcreated when a virulently anti-gay bill wins widespread sup-port. Signed into law in February 2014, the Anti-Homosexu-ality Act mandates a maximum sentence of life imprisonment
for engaging in homosexual ac-tivity as well as imprisonmentfor those who provide aid orcounseling to members of theLBGT community. The film allows American re-ligious leaders and their youngmissionaries that make up the
“front lines in a battle for billions of souls” to explain theirpositions in their own words. Shocking and enlightening, touching and horrifying, “God Loves Uganda” reveals theconflicting motives of faith and greed, ecstasy and egotismamong Ugandan ministers, American evangelical leaders, andthe foot soldiers of a theology that sees Uganda as a test case, ground zero in the battle not for millions, but billions of souls.
“God Loves Uganda” on Independent Lens will be broad-cast Monday, May 19th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Mon-day, May 19th at 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, May 20th at 7:00a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Most adoptees in the America are never allowed to have the recordof their own birth. But in the last fifteen years, a number of states havereversed sealed record laws. From Oregon to Maine, thousands ofadoptees have now received their records, and a number of states areconsidering similar legislation.Opponents have argued that birthmotherswere promised confidentiality, but there is no statutory guarantee of pri-vacy—and upwards of 98% of birthmothers indicate that they would wel-come contact and/or the sharing of information.
In 2011 Illinois passed State House Bill 5428. It allowed AdultAdopted Persons to finally have a copy of their original birth certificates, making Illinois the largest state to reverse sealed record laws. While op-ponents of the Bill managed to include a “firewall,” letting birth parentsopt out of revealing their names, the law opened the door for 350,000adoptees to access much desired and sometimes very important personaldetails.
A Simple Piece of Paper follows over a dozen individu-als as they apply to the State of Illinois to discover the truthabout their origins. Whether from a desire to know their bio-logical family or the need to know genetic medical history, the film charts this pivotal moment in their lives. Thought-pro-voking and ultimately joyful, this film demonstrates how ASimple Piece of Paper can forever alter the course of a life.

A growing number of scientists, conservationists, and environmentalists have come to regard beavers asoverlooked tools in the effort to reverse the disastrouseffects of global warming and water shortages.
In “Leave It to Beavers” on Nature, view these in-dustrious rodents, once valued for their fur or huntedas pests, in a new light. A novel assembly of beaver enthusiasts and “employ-ers” reveal the ways in which the presence of beavers can transform and re-vive landscapes. With their skills as natural builders and hydro-engineers, bea-vers are being recruited to accomplish everything from finding water in a bone-dry desert to recharging water tables and coaxing life back into damaged lands.

“The Gathering Swarms” on Nature takes a look at some of the planet’sgreat gatherings, creatures that come together in inconceivable numbers—sometimes in millions, billions, and even trillions. Included are bats and bees, locusts and ants, monarch butterflies in Mexico, 17-year cicada hatches, grun-ion in the Sea of Cortez, carp in the Mississippi River, sardine runs off thecoast of South Africa, super flocks of parakeets in the Australian Outback, mayflies on the 4th of July, and even penguins and wildebeest.
Some gather to breed or to migrate, some for protection, some simply to keepwarm in the cold. But in the process, a kind of super-organism is created in whichindividual intelligence is superseded by a collective consciousness that shares in-formation and moves with a single purpose for the benefit of all.
“The Gathering Swarms” on Nature airs Wednesday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m.On HD3-1, it airs Wednesday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 22ndat 7:00 a.m./12:00 noon, and Sunday, May 25th at 6:00 p.m.

Rusalka Renée Fleming sings one of her signature roles, the title character in Dvorák’s
sumptuously melodic “Rusalka” on Great Performances at the Met. The story of theopera, which is about a water nymph who gives up a life of enchantment to pursuemortal love with a handsome prince, is drawn from several folktale sources, includingHans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.”
Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham hosts the three-hour broadcast.
