Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products?

Page 2: Q1

It was necessary for our media product to have used as many conventions possible as we only had a limited amount of time to fit everything in. We looked at a few thriller openings and we found many conventions that were similar, there were fast paced action, blood, low key lighting, weapons, guns, black and white, killing, murder, mysterious.

Here is an example of a thriller movie which I focused on:Vertigohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7sznnL0NZ0The opening to this film showed a close up of a pole & a robbers hand reaching out to pull his weight up

as he was running away from 2 police officers. The chase scene took place on a rooftop & it showed a long shot of them running after each other. The pace of the music was at a fast pace which created the tension. One of the police officer slips and is left hanging at the edge of the roof and the other officer comes & saves him although the robber escapes and the officer falls and dies.

Another example is:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7acI5z9vyok

The opening to Jaws shows a happy couple running on a beach and the girl jumps into the water for a swim and it shows a long shot of her swimming but it shows a low angle shot of a shark’s point of view swimming towards her legs and it starts to feed on her although it shows a happy and cheerful music, it clashes with the scene of her getting killed.

My media project does look like a movie opening as we started off the movie differently by going straight into the movie by showing the murder and the suspense of who the killer might be. Also, we never gave away too much of the movie at the beginning as it leaves the rest of the movie to find out who the killer is and why he carried out this murder. We got the idea of the interrogation scene from the movie The Dark Knight and we worked together as a group to add in the flashbacks to let the audience see what has happened and to add suspense to see why he was the suspect. I believe that the opening of our media product would be thriller because we added many conventions that are found in thriller movies such as low key lighting during the flashbacks, murder, blood, mysterious music. Due to the movie starting of with an interrogation scene, our group believed that Interrogation would be a good title. We used the actors from our class, so we made them dress according to their roles, so we made the suspect dress casual as he was a youngster and it would be more convincing that he is the suspect. Although we got the interrogator to remain in his formal suit so that he would look more mature and sophisticated. During the flashbacks, we used low key lighting to show the hidden secrets. We made a group logo to represent our media group and we named ourselves Omap Productions, and we put this at the beginning of the clip.
