Communicating With Confidence in Loddon and Buloke Shires A Priority

During Speech Pathology Week (23-29 August), the Strong Families and Strong Families (SFSC) Buloke and Loddon programs are focussing on this year’s theme “communicating with confidence” as part of their vision for all children to start school ready to learn. According to Speech Pathologist and SFSC Early Years Facilitator Susie Hawke, more than 1.2 million Australians have a communication disability affecting a person's ability to understand and be understood by others. “Communicating with confidence is vital to enable everyone to participate fully in the social, educational, economic and sporting aspects of community life,” said Ms Hawke. “Australians with communication disability or speech and language delay have great difficulty maximising future educational, health and social outcomes, without the intervention of a speech pathologist,” she said.

According to Speech Pathology Australia, only 38 per cent of Australians with a communication disability are participating in the workforce compared with 80 per cent of people without a communication disability. People with a communication disability are also less likely to have a non-school qualification (42 per cent), than those without a communication disability (61 per cent). Ms Hawke says communication, by definition, involves at least two people, so it is important that everyone understands that communication is more than speech.

“Australians with communication difficulties can communicate with others using a variety of means including word or picture-based communication boards/books, sign and gesture, and spelling. “Technology is playing a growing and vital role in keeping Australians with communication difficulties engaged with their family, friends and those in their communi-ty,” she said. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the challenges faced by Australians with a communication disability which is why “Communicating with Confidence” is the theme for Speech Pathology Week this year.

During the week Susie and the SFSC team will be working with young children and their families across the Loddon and Buloke Sires to provide them with the support they need to confidently communicate, including a range of tips and ideas via their Facebook pages – @SFSC Loddon and @SFSC Buloke. “Children and older people make up the majority of people with communication disability, with children more likely to have a profound/severe communication disability,” says Ms Hawke. “Simple activities such as talking with your children regularly about a wide range of subjects, and reading together can have a huge impact on a child’s speech and language and their ability to communicate confidently,” she said.

Australia Day Awards Nominations Open Nominations for the 2021 Australia Day awards are now open. Council is receiving nominations for the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Services and Community Group/Event of the Year awards. Criteria and eligibility for the awards includes contribution towards values such as a fair go, concern for the environment, shared prosperity, participation in sport, cultural diversity, importance of strong community values and support systems. Nominations are also open for the Community Service Awards. These awards recognise the outstanding contribution to the local community during the current year or noteworthy service to the local community over a number of years.

Nominations for the awards close Friday, 30 October 2020 As part of its Australia Day celebrations, Loddon Shire Council will hold competitions for colouring (Prep to Grade 2), a photographic competition (Junior, Senior and Open categories) and a Literature Competition (for Prep to Year 12). All our citizens are originally from the Philippines. It was a great honour to conduct the citizenship ceremony which was held virtually due to current COVID-19 restrictions.

Help Develop The 2030 Community Vision Council is asking residents to participate in developing the 2030 Community Vision as part of The Loddon Project. The Community Vision will be a statement of our Loddon Shire communities’ goals and aspirations for the future over the long term. We will be asking you to consider What do I want my community to look like in the year 2030? You can have your say in a number of ways. Virtual Loddon Valley Business Network Evening A virtual Loddon Valley Business Network evening will be held on Tuesday, 1 September at 7pm. Council’s Tourism Department will provide an update on tourism initiatives moving forward post COVID-19. NDCH Wear It Purple Day 2020

NDCH is proud that local businesses, Gannawarra health services and Gannawarra Shire Council are getting behind local youth who identify as LGBTIQ+ and showing them that they are welcome and valued in our community. Wear it Purple Day 2020 is on Friday 28th August. Wear it Purple Day is about showing LGBTIQ+ young

people that they have the right to be proud of who they are. The message supports creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show LGBTIQ+ young people that they are seen and supported. Research shows us that 75% of Australian LGBTIQ+ youth will be bullied because of their identity and 80% of this will occur at school. Young LBTIQ+ youth are also 12 times more likely to experience depression and 5 times more likely to experience anxiety! Northern District Community Health CEO Mandy Hutchinson says “it is important that we create safe spaces for LGBTIQ+ young people to feel welcome, included and appreciated, to encourage better mental health outcomes and experiences for them and the overall community”. While we are unable to come together to show our support in the traditional ways due to COVID-19 restrictions, NDCH will be hosting an online morning tea for staff to celebrate the event as well as sharing a social media campaign. Local schools have also been encouraged to share resources through their online platforms and a number of health organisations, such as Kerang District Health will have staff wearing purple ribbons to show their support. “Now more than ever, it is important that we look after the mental health of all members of our community and showing our support for LGBTIQ+ young people is one way we can do that”. This year local businesses have been invited to become part of the Wear It Purple Campaign with a number of them purchasing rainbow stickers to be displayed at their businesses. Gray’s Bakery will be happily flying the Rainbow Flag from their flagpole. Owner Janine Gray said “Local businesses can make an impact on the experiences of LGBTIQ+ young people by making it clear that they are welcoming, safe spaces. Displaying a Rainbow Flag is one such way to do that.”

NDCH encourages all Gannawarra Businesses to display the Rainbow Flag stickers in their shop windows. So please pop on your purple clothes on August 28th, and join us.

Moreover, they will be joined in Sydney by six more of their countrymen from the Broken Hill district, with their goods and chattels who are on the way home to their native land. Thus the days when the picturesque covered waggons pulled up at the horse yard and its turbaned owner charmed the homestead folk as he displayed his colorful cloths on the nearby rails, are already, like so many phases of Australian life, a part of a bygone era. SMALL BUISINESS FINANCIAL COUNSELLLING

Hi everyone, and hope your health is fine.

To recap, the Small Business Financial Counsellor initiative is a twelve-month program providing a ‘no cost’ service to small businesses operating in rural towns and communities that are impacted on by drought, and emerging issues such as COVID-19. We provide a service to small business owners in line with our vision to be the leader in the provision of information and support services to build resilient rural communities.

We work with our clients in the expectation that our professional services over time will assist owners to identify options and improve the viability of their existing or future business. I am going to summarise a real life case study to help you understand the great work our counsellors are doing for small business owners in North West Victoria.

Case Study

The business is a café and was struggling financially. The business had declined dramatically in turnover as a result of introduction of Sunday trading and the opening of a competitor in the town, which compounded the effects of drought in the town. During our first meeting with the client, we learned that his issues were:

Struggling with meeting demands from the banks and ATO.

Outstanding ATO lodgements and significant debt to the ATO.

Lack of an adequate record keeping system.

The business owner could not understand why profit margins were diminishing, even more so than turnover.

He was struggling to meet bills, despite a steady (albeit reduced) turnover.

Extreme stress from the constant battle with bills trying to pay creditors.

Our counsellor provided mentoring and professional guidance for the following:

Working with the ATO to negotiate lodgement and a payment plan. (I should add the ATO has been so helpful with small business owners behind with their debts).

Record keeping – how to set up an appropriate record system.

Importance of using cash register functionality for recording sales and GST information, and how to use it to identify errors/possible misuse.

How record keeping can assist to monitor the financial position of the business and identify areas of improvement.

Benchmarks – analysis and comparison of business figures to industry benchmarks identified.

After implementing reviews of record keeping and pricing, the business owner felt that things were “turning around” and he was in a much better frame of mind. Profits are increasing, and he is finding it easier to meet financial commitments.

VALE JAMES (JIM) HENRY WITHINGTON 1935 - 2020

Our sincere sympathy is extended to Anne, David, Terese, Trevor, Chris, and families. Jim became a much-loved member of our district following the purchase of his farm at Mologa in 1976, moving there in 1977. Jim was a man of many talents, not only farming but working as a mechanic, school bus driver and gardener at the Pyramid Hill Bush Nursing Hospital. Jim was also very community minded and gave many hours of service to the Pyramid Hill and Mologa districts. He was involved in the Mologa Landcare, PH Lions, PH Agricultural and Show Society, the Anglican Church and the ANZAC/Remembrance Day Services at the Mologa War Memorial, to name but a few. In 1983, he married Anne and they made their home in Barber Street, Pyramid Hill, later building a mud brick cottage on the farm at Mologa before subsequently retiring to Golden Square in 2012.

Jim’s graveside service was held at the Mitiamo Cemetery on Friday 21st August. Jim was a humble, thoughtful, generous and kind friend to the Pyramid Hill and Mologa people. He will be sadly missed by all.
