GRADE 5 EXHIBITION ROLLERCOASTER!
Grade 5 students have been buried in the deep inquiry, trying to unravel and comprehend their trans-
disciplinary theme “Who we are”, which they‟re doing in readiness for their grand finale – The exhibition!
Their chosen topics are culture and cuisine, history and religion and nature and environment. They are
addressing discrimination in society due to religious differences, obesity, other diet related health issues
and cultural degradation and pollution in their investigation.
The excitement at the action stage of their inquiry is at an all-time high. Enthusiasm, nerves, creativity,
thinking skills, is all infused into the cocktail of their conclusion of their primary years.
They have visited the Sanjay Gandhi national Park, N Grill restaurant in Chembur which graciously taught
them about the spicing of Indian food, the nutrition elements of menus and the importance of conscious
healthy living and environmental conservation. They had visits from two reputed surgeons Dr Sonal
Jomraj, and Dr Sharma, they also had a sit down with the school resident Pandit Mr. Kripa Singh and they
will soon hopefully have the previldge of visiting a recycling plant.
Lots of work done, yet lots more demanding their time and attention, but all is done in the IB way of real
life situations and practicality all in great fun!
See you at the exhibition, soon!
The Pandit imparting the wisdom of the ages and historical facts on Hindu!

Dr Sonal Jomraj’s rule of thumb “Don‟t eat until you‟re satisfied, eat until you‟re no longer hungry”
Dr Sharma says that “eat everything in moderation, play outdoors a lot and avoid junk food.”
Mr. Wong, The manager at N Grill, allowed us into their kitchen, (after covering our hair) and explained
the environmental conservation idea of using clay bowls to serve food and improve taste.

REFLECTION ON PROJECT ‘AFRICA’
W e learnt about the five themes of geography, the geographer‟s tools, our planet earth, forces shaping
earth, climate and weather and how climate affects vegetation. In earth's human geography we
learnt about population, migration, economic systems and political systems. Africa's physical geography,
history and cultures of Africa. In this we acquired a great knowledge of regions, climate, vegetation, natural
resources, land use, civilizations, European colonization, current issues, religions, customs and traditions in
Africa.
I made a PowerPoint presentation on „The Peshawar Attack‟ and condemned terrorism. Our journey
through Africa was an incredible one. We jointly made a setup of the four regions of Africa. Each one of us
contributed by making ppt's, models and charts. I contributed by making a chart on Robert Mugabe and
focused on recent issues of Africa. I gained a lot of knowledge of Africa in this way of learning under the
able guidance of our teacher. We had also made a scrap book on a few countries in each of the regions of
Africa. I had selected the East Africa region and described the land forms, rivers, climate and incredible
places of visit in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The oral presentations in the class gave me a lot of
confidence. We had done many writing activities too in which we had to really think and write.
Mam it was a great learning experience and the difficult issues were simplified and taught to us.

OUR TASKS IN ENGLISH ARE CHALLENGING ALL THE WAY!
There was no particular favorite task of mine as each task was equally interesting and fully enjoyable like
the others. Since I liked all, I want to tell what I liked about each task. I adored the story writing mainly
because I got to be creative and create my own little Short Story, it was fun (and slightly difficult too) to
present my ideas in words. The one where I had to write my own folktale was also pleasurable. I chose to
do a tall tale full of exaggeration! To five the hyperbolic effect!
Reviewed book:
Percy Jackson and the battle of the labyrinth.
Author:
Rick Riordan
I liked the book review because I had to research, collect
information about the book and author and actually think deeply
about what I liked in the book, which I normally do not do; it was a
challenging task too! For the book review I chose the book "Percy
Jackson and the battle of the labyrinth". The thing I cherished about
this book is the way they portray Greek Gods. According to the book,
Poseidon is cool; he wears Hawaiian shirts and a cap that says
''Neptune's lucky fishing hat''. Another thing I love about this book is
the characters. My favorite character in this book is Rachel Elizabeth
Dare. She's full of spirit and she is daring, kind and loves nature and
charitable too! According to me, the author wanted to tell us about
Greek mythology in a humorous way; a mix of ancient and modern and he has done that wonderfully.
Read and enjoy!
— AARYA MENON
To review, I chose a book called "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and the author is Jeff Kinney. I liked all
the tasks but the one I liked the most was "Writing a short story on your own”.
— DHRUV CHABRIA
I reviewed a Book: Robinson Crusoe-Author: Daniel Defoe.
The activity I liked the most was Task on: Writing a short story on your own as we had to write our own
story based entirely on creative thinking.
It was also interesting for me to think of a gripping topic to base my story on it.
— SRIYA SRIVASTAVA
I enjoy all the tasks in our English lessons but I adored the Task on: Writing a BOOK REVIEW. I had to
choose an appropriate book and read it thoroughly before I reviewed it. My Book: The Wizard of Oz and
the author is Frank Baum. I look forward to completing tasks like this!

For English Language & Literature, some of the tasks designed were: To write a short story on our own,
a book review and write a folk tale on your own. These tasks made me think outside the box! To write
the book review, I had to pay good attention to what I was reading, including the book jacket. For the tasks
on folk tale and short story, we had to imagine a lot. This demanded that we read more to write creatively.
These tasks were indeed challenging!
— NITIKA NARAYAN
I enjoyed the Task on: Writing a BOOK REVIEW of our choice. All of
us were interested in knowing about the books which others were going to
read and review. We found that we all had different books, different views
and perspectives. While preparing for the task, I got to know that many
things like how to research, how people suggest books for others and how
others write reviews.
— KINJAL PARIKH
I liked doing all the tasks that Meera ma‟m gave us. They were fun to work
with but some were indeed challenging! I reviewed the Book: The
inventions of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. While writing a book
review gave us information about the author and publisher too. We needed
to focus on the format, the theme, the plot, the characters, suspense if any
and of course, the style in the content!
— RIYA DAMA
I reviewed Percy Jackson and the sea of monsters by Rick Riordran. I enjoyed all the tasks that ma'am
made us do, but I am a little disappointed as I could not finish the task on story in the class in the limited
time frame!
— NAVYA SHAH
Reviewed Book- Just in case
Author-Meg Rosoff
I enjoyed all the tasks that we did in the English classes!
— SURINA PAREKH
Reviewed Book: Anca's journey
Author: Ruth Siburt
Illustrator's name: Gabhor Usomo
The task I like the most was writing a fairy tale or a fool’s tale or any other tale, all on your own. I liked
it the most because from childhood we listen to stories, folk tales or fairy tales like Cinderella and many
more! This time it was my chance to write a tale on my own and I enjoyed writing. The part I value is when
the elves, the super heroes in my story help the pirates.
— SHREE SENGHANI
I enjoyed all the activities; especially I liked writing a BOOK REVIEW for: The Secret of the Old Clock
—KANKSHA MAITRA SANYAL
TITLE- SECRET GARDENBY- FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT
The best task was on Book Review. The finest part was when I started to review, I really felt I was
professional reviewer and I had already reviewed many books. I liked this book because it showed me a
variety of scenes: happy, sad, exciting. I felt as if I was a character in the book.

detective who tries to fight demons and tell them not to attack the people in the
real world.
— DARSHIL VIRA
My favorite task- Folk tale
I had fun writing my own fool‟s tale. I came up with a very hilarious way to
