Celebrate BC And World Rivers Day

“Rivers are the arter-ies of our planet, they are lifelines in the tru-est sense,” states Mark Angelo, internationally renowned river advo-cate and recipient of the Order of Canada and Founder of Rivers Day.

BC Rivers Day Events are annual prov-incial and international celebrations of rivers throughout the world, celebrated on the last Sunday in September.

Locally, Th e Slocan and Little Slocan Riv-ers will be celebrated in Vallican on Sun-day, September 30 at the Sinixt Barter Faire Grounds, turn right off Highway 6 at Pass-more. Cross the Bridge over the Slocan Riv-er and follow Slocan River Road across the Little Slocan River Bridge, past Indian Point Road.

BC Rivers Day cele-bration will begin at 11 am opening with an Algonquin Water Blessing song, fol-lowed by a Salmon luncheon and edu-cational screen pres-entations in a 20x20ft four-walled tent al-lowing one wall for displays with lots of comfortable sitting for viewing.

Th e 3 day race starts Friday morning at 5 am from Kaslo. Participants traverse over mountain peaks, and through valley bottoms to complete the loop over to New Denver and back, along

trails, mining/wagon roads and alpine meadows, fi nishing on Sunday aft ernoon in Kaslo. Th is race is only open to experienced racers who have adequately prepared for the event. Racers will be staying overnight both nights at Re-tallack Lodge.

Routes and races are very similar to last year with the exception of avoiding the airstrip at the Kaslo Airport, and the fi nish line will be located along Water Street allowing for Front Street to remain open throughout the weekend. Suff erfest continues to listen to the community by avoid-ing sensitive trails and areas.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the fastest downhill splits in the Monster Enduro, plus $100 goes to the ‘Greatest Overall Suff erer’ both male and female. Last year’s winner was a com-petitor in the 50km race who took a hard fall, stopping part way through to be transported to the hospital to receive stitches, then resumed the course where she completed the race!

Currently there are 393 registrations, with many more expected before race day. Racers come from all over BC, Alberta, and all across Canada! In just 3 short years, Kaslo Suff erfest has made quite a name for itself as a great late sea-son fun race for the whole family. Th e most popular race is the 10k run, however the 100k bike has picked up quite the following and suspected to be capped in the next year or two. Th ere are currently 6 registered in the Loonie Toonie.

Th e event is designed and the philosophy behind it is to help the community. Th e mandate of the society is to aid in economic growth and sustainability, encourage physic-al fi tness and outdoor recreation for all ages, and to help maintain the trail system in the region.

Th e Kaslo Suff erfest Society asks that residents take cau-tion when driving the roads or hiking the trails during the event for the safety of the participants. Also, please do not disturb the numerous trail marking signs, and fl agging (Blue “Trail”) so that participants can stay on course. Th e markings will be removed aft er the event.

Without the amazing sponsors and volunteers this event simply would not happen. It was a diffi cult year fi nancially for the event, but due to fi nancial support through grants and sponsorships and wise budget decisions, the event is going to pull through this year, - strong.

Th e Old Bridge: A Tribute to Crossing the

Bridge in TrailSpanning the Columbia River since its

inaugural opening on July 1, 1912, the “Old Bridge” is now slated for demoli-tion due to its crumbling infrastructure and prohibitive repair costs but before the bridge vanishes from the Columbia River landscape it once helped defi ne, the VI-SAC Gallery and the Trail Historical So-ciety will acknowledge the role the “Old Bridge” played in the Trail community with a collaborative exhibition of guest artists and historical displays.

Th e Old Bridge Exhibition will be show-ing until October 12. Historical displays of photographs and Old Bridge related item will hang or be displayed alongside guest artist interpretations of the Old Bridge in works of various mediums, for example – watercolour, digital photography, acrylic, and collage.

Toadfest Success Approximately 500 people enjoyed the sunshine and ac-

tivities during the third annual Toadfest at Summit Lake Provincial Park south of Nakusp on Wednesday, August 22, and Th ursday, August 23. While the goal of the event was primarily educational, to raise awareness about the importance of this breeding site for western toads, more than 12,000 toadlets were safely moved across Highway 6.

“We were extremely pleased with the turn-out, and the enthusiasm from those attending to help and learn about the toadlets,” said Trevor Oussoren, program manager for the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP). “It was a really a joint eff ort that made the event success-ful, and we could have not could done it without the help of the project partners involved.”

Th e event was hosted by the FWCP (a partnership be-tween the Province of BC, BC Hydro, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada), BC Parks, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and Col-umbia Basin Trust. YRB provided professional fl aggers to ensure that the road was safely closed for short periods of time during the event. Th e public are reminded not to move the toadlets across the highway outside of this event.

Th e toadlet migration typically lasts between four and six weeks starting in mid-August. Every year tens of thou-sands of western toadlets, each not more than the size of a dime, get squashed as they attempt their migration from the shoreline of Summit Lake to upland habitat where they spend several years maturing before returning to the lake to breed.

Th ere are a couple of toad tunnels to help the amphib-ians go underneath the highway, but the migration moves from one area to another so most still have to cross the road. Th e total number of toadlets moving from Summit Lake can number into the millions each year.

“While the western toad population is still healthy at Summit Lake, we want to do everything we can to keep it that way,” added Oussoren. “Th ey are an important part of the ecosystem but in North America we have seen their numbers decline signifi cantly, and this province is now the centre for western toad distribution in the world. Helping people connect with nature in this fashion will help with long term conservation of the western toad which is listed federally as a species of concern.”

Selkirk College Staff Honoured With Scope Awards

Selkirk College’s Standing Committee on Professional Excellence (SCOPE) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011/2012 awards.

Th e purpose of the SCOPE awards is to recognize and promote both long-term and innovative professional ex-cellence. Faculty and staff are nominated for the awards by students and peers. Th is year, fi ve faculty members have been recognized for Long Term Exceptional Performance.

Jane Green, an instructor in the Classroom and Com-munity Support Worker program, has been recognized this year with a SCOPE Award for Long Term Exceptional Performance.

Nominated by a student, Jane was described as “an ex-ceptional teacher, innovator, passionate advocate, and in-novative life coach”. Aft er spending time in Jane’s class, one colleague observed Jane as being “an exceptional lis-tener and very student-centered”.

One community member described the Shelter Guides Home Share and Respite Care Training that Jane spear-headed, and worked with community members to de-velop, as “the fi rst practical training ever off ered specifi c-ally for home-share and respite care providers”.

Garry Graham, a ceramics instructor in the Kootenay Studio Arts program, has also been recognized with a SCOPE Award for Long Term Exceptional Performance. Student feedback indicates Garry has had great success as an instructor. Students describe him as a teacher that “inspires creativity” and motivates them to give their best.

Faculty and staff describe Garry as having extraordinary dedication to teaching, and as a “gift ed instructor who is fo-cused on excellence in studio practice”. Garry has been ad-mired for eff ective leadership, student centeredness, and pro-fessionalism during the challenging changes over the past year.

Elizabeth Lund, a chemistry instructor and University Arts and Sciences Coordinator has been recognized for Long Term Exceptional Performance. Elizabeth was nom-inated by a student – this student-initiated feedback indi-cates great success as a teacher. One student commented that Elizabeth was “…always available with helpful ad-vice, kind words, or just an open ear and a friendly smile.” Elizabeth’s hard work defi nitely did not go unnoticed or unappreciated by students.

Faculty and staff describe Elizabeth as a dedicated in-structor and coordinator whose “…quiet and determined compassion for education…mediation skills… and crea-tivity are constant reminders about how a community of educators need to be with each other”.

Ruth Dubois, an instructor in the Nursing program, has been recognized for Long Term Exceptional Performance. Colleagues describe Ruth as a “leader and inspiration” for writing an outstanding accreditation report for the Col-lege of Registered Nurses in British Columbia (CRNBC) in January 2012. Th ey commend her eff orts to bringing the faculty together and reaffi rming their belief in the nursing program and its excellence.

David Feldman, a University Arts and Sciences Math instructor and SCFA President, has been recognized for Long Term Exceptional Performance.

Student feedback indicates David’s success as a teacher. Students fi nd him dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledge-able, “hilarious and kind”. One student credits his success (in what was once his weakest subject) to David’s ability to “make math class funny, entertaining, and incredibly educational”.

David shares his enthusiasm for music, dancing, hiking and learning with his students, colleagues, and commun-ity. Recently, his participation in course suspensions were noticed by students, colleagues, and the community. Aft er hearing David speak at the Board of Governor’s meeting, a student wrote, “I admired his steadfastness, diplomacy, and the clear devotion he has to Selkirk College and the education of students.”

Th e awards ceremony will take place in the staff lounge at the Castlegar campus on Th ursday, September 27 from 5 pm to 7 pm. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome!

Beef Products Recalled Due To E. Coli Concerns

Th e Canadian Food Inspection Agency has ordered a recall of ground beef products sold across Canada at Cost-co, Walmart, Safeway and Calahoo Meats stores, because it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria O157:H7. It might not look or smell spoiled, according to the CFIA. Consumption of beef contaminated with the bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

Most of the products, from XL Food in Alberta, were distributed in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario but the Costco products were sold right across Canada under the Kirkland Signature brand.

But CFIA food recall manager Garfi eld Balsom says products from other retailers should be checked because smaller stores may have bought items wholesale from lar-ger retailers such as Costco and repackaged them.

“Th ere are maybe situations where somebody has re-moved the label or there’s some secondary distribution of the product. Our advice is to return the product to the point of sale and inquire whether that product is part of the recall,” he said. “Th e last advice is, if you’re not sure, then don’t eat it.”

Th e recalled products include ground beef, burger pat-ties, ground chuck, ground sirloin patties, stuff ed pep-pers, meatballs, beef sliders, meatloaf, cheddar cheese patties and ground beef tubes. Th e products were packed between August 29 and September 15, and could have “best before” or “freeze by” dates from September 9 – 23.

Th e CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses. Find a complete list of the products at http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaff r/recarapp/2012/20120916e.shtml.

Computer Fraud Warning – “Ransomware” And “Scareware”Th e RCMP would like to warn the public about the

latest scam aff ecting many Canadians.Th e RCMP have received reports from residents that

they have been “locked out” of their computer and re-ceived pop-up message stating that their computer has been frozen by the police for a criminal investigation. In some cases the pop-up provides a list of possible off ences, while in other cases the pop-up may list a specifi c off ence such as “child pornography” or “illegal music down-loading”. Th e message then tells recipients to pay $100 via a payment service provider so their computers can be un-locked.

Th ese warning messages claim to come from the RCMP or other Canadian government agencies, but they DO NOT and it is important that you DO NOT send money. Th ese types of messages, commonly known as “Ransom-ware” or “Scareware”, are designed to create such shock and anxiety that victims respond by sending money quickly. Your computer will not be unlocked if you pay the money and you will never get your money back.

If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that it is a scam – these messages are not being issued by the RCMP. If you’ve been “locked out” of your computer, it’s an indicator that your system may have been infected with malware and you will need to take steps to address the problem.

For more information about this scam, go to the “Ran-somware” page on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre web-site.

Tips to protect yourself:Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has

a virusUpdate your anti-virus soft ware oft en and scan your

computer for viruses regularlyDon’t click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to

you by someone you don’t knowTurn on your browser’s pop-up blocking featureNever download anti-virus soft ware from a pop-up or

link sent to you in an e-mailIf you’ve received a ransomware/scareware message,

please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501) to report it. If you have been a victim of a fraud, please contact your local RCMP Detachment or police force of jurisdiction.

For more information and tips about scams and frauds aff ecting Canadians, please go to the Canadian An-ti-Fraud Centre website at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

Neighbours Creating CommunityTh is past September 15 and September 16, Shoreacres held

its centennial celebration, hosted the momentous Kieran Gal-braith Memorial Park Shoreacres Beach dedication ceremony and erected two new bulletin boards.

Nearly 250 people came to celebrate Shoreacres on Satur-day, from young to old, from past residents whose families have called Shoreacres home for generations to new residents. Th e celebrations included: Presentations from dignitaries, Doukhobors choir singing, Cake cutting, Russan Music, Tae Kwon Do Demonstrations, Kids Games, Story Telling, a trad-itional sit down Borscht dinner and a local Shoreacres band capping off the evening.

Th e Nature Trust of BC and the Shoreacres Neighbour-hood Community Association are pleased to announce the

offi cial formation of the new park. Th is 1.6 acre parcel in-cludes shoreline along the picturesque Slocan River and was made possible by the generous contribution to the Nature Trust of BC by the George Gailbraith family and friends in the memory of George’s son, Kieran. Th is is truly a historic-ally signifi cant moment for the community and the residents at large because the beach will now be secured for generations to come.

Th e bulletin boards were an important next step in building a common place for information to be shared and for ideas to be exchanged, the community came together to design, create and erect these two new pillars of Shoreacres.
