PW PURPOSE

FORGIVEN AND FREED BY GOD IN JESUS CHRIST, Forgiven and freed by grace through faith, the central figure stands in praise. AND EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, WE COMMIT OURSELVES: Rooted in faith, the trio of women emerge. The outline of the central figure forms a cross. We are Presbyterian women, engrafted in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us. TO NURTURE OUR FAITH THROUGH PRAYER AND BIBLE STUDY, The right figure holds a book to guide her reading, studying, praying, or meditating. TO SUPPORT THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH WORLDWIDE, The left figure reaches out to care for others, as she shares, nurtures, and heals. The circle represents the church worldwide where women offer their gifts and talents in the midst of the global community.

TO WORK FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE The uplifted arms of the central figure reach out to embrace a just peace for the world. The relationship between the three figures depicts lives of wholeness rather than turmoil.

AND TO BUILD AN INCLUSIVE, CARING, COMMUNITY OF WOMEN The three women have no distinct features and represent all women. The shapes surrounding them express energy, strength and openness. THAT STRENGTHENS THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (U.S.A.) Our name, Presbyterian Women, ties us to our denomination. The Bible resembles the Bible depicted in the PC(USA) Seal. AND WITNESSES TO THE PROMISE OF GOD’S KINGDOM. Guided by our Purpose, we witness to the reality of God’s realm.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN IN THE PRESBYTERY OF GREATER ATLANTA

I feel honored to lead such a faithful group of women known as the PW in the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. You see, I have always felt called to be a facilitator of God’s leadership and an example of the love of Jesus Christ since I was a young girl. I was well steeped in faith and the message of the love of Christ from a very young age as I accompanied my father, a Presbyterian minister, on hospital calls, home visits, and worship. I was allowed to attend events with the youth before the qualifying age so most of them called me “Squirt”. I recall carrying gladiolas up the stairs of hospitals to give to sick people. We used the stairs just in case someone would question and perhaps, even prohibit, my continuing since I was under the age to be allowed upstairs in hospitals. I listened attentively as my father prayed with the sick, the lonely, and those who were preparing for their final days here on earth. I didn’t know then how much this would affect my decision to not only be a nurse, but a home health and hospice nurse. Eventually, I led and supported those who cared for the sick and elderly. What a tremendous gift this was to have had an opportunity and preparation for a time such as today. I look forward to what we may accomplish as women of God in this place…at this time.

Moderator’s Annual Report

As I complete my second and final year as your PWP Moderator, I thank each of you who has accompanied me on the journey and given your much needed support and love. Thank you especially to the PWP Coordinating Team leaders who have made my job so much easier by doing theirs so well. They are amazing, talented, hard-working women. My goals this year have been the following:

• Continue to build the numbers of attendees at various PW events. I hope we can continue to grow the community of Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. We have so much to offer one another. I thank God for all the new friends I have made throughout this year and for all they have taught others and me, but we still have much to do. Younger women are still underrepresented in PW, and we must find new and unique ways to reach out to them.

• Be available to attend events at various churches throughout the presbytery when asked. Thank you to all the Presbyterian Women who have invited me to their special events, Bible studies, and worship this year. What a pleasure it has been to visit each of you and experience your varied ways of being PW.

• Spend more time in Bible study, prayer, and spiritual journaling. Being grounded in faith helps one to be grounded in everyday life.

I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Moderator and look forward to another year on the PWP CT as a District Leader as we travel the road set forth in our PW Purpose by nurturing our faith through prayer and Bible study, supporting the mission of the church worldwide, working for justice and peace, and building an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

March 2017-March 2018

Leadership Development and Community Building Your PWP Coordinating Team meets quarterly at various churches throughout the presbytery. At these meetings, important PW events are planned and discussed, along with upcoming events with our Mission partners that would be of interest to all Presbyterian Women. The information garnered at these meetings is then dispersed to all churches by the District Leaders so that women throughout the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta may know of opportunities available to them. The Coordinating Team met in May, August, and November of 2017, and in January of 2018. In April, I attended the Synod of South Atlantic PWS meeting in Savannah, Georgia. It was wonderful to gather once again with women serving at the synod level and to share experiences and ideas. In June and July 2017, PWP offered Moderator and Treasurer training for all interested PW Moderators and Treasurers in our presbytery. These sessions were held at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City in June and Radcliffe Presbyterian Church in July. A total of 30 women representing 16 churches attended these meetings; they received leadership

information and PW Manuals for use in their church PWs, and exchanged ideas with one another about their various PW groups and what was working well in them. On September 23, 2017, Presbyterian Women from throughout the presbytery attended Fall Workshops at Druid Hills Presbyterian Church. The theme for the workshops was “How is your Community built? PW: Building a Caring, Inclusive Community of Women.” Rev. Lindsay Armstrong was keynote speaker for the event. Her message was “Building Communities in Christ: New Churches and Evangelism in Greater Atlanta.” She shared excellent information on several new worshipping communities in the presbytery, their goals, and how they got started. Following Lindsay’s presentation, participants chose two workshops before lunch and one after lunch based on the tenets of the PW Purpose. The workshops offered were the following:

• Witness through Bible Study of a Christian Community: an overview of this year’s Horizon’s

Bible Study.

• Enriching your Community by Engaging the Disabled in Community Activities: a program of the

organization Affinity and

• Global Missions: A Worldwide Community through the “Least Coin

• Finding Your Heritage: Connecting with your past by starting your genealogical journey—hints

and helps for finding your roots.

• Packing for Community Children: a Lunch Backpack Program

• Celebrating the Community of the Presbyterian Faith: 500th Reformation Anniversary

• Communities Within Communities Serving the Homeless

Feedback from the keynote and workshops was highly positive.

Spiritual Support and Missions

We endorsed the 2017-2018 Horizons Bible Study: Cloud of Witnesses: The Community of Christ in Hebrews by Melissa Bane Sevier by promoting the study guide, supplemental resources, and course at Columbia Theological Seminary. The 2017 Annual Gathering was held at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church March 19, 2017. Rev. Kimmy Stokesbary was the keynote speaker. There were 63 Presbyterian Women and 4 guests who attended, coming from 16 churches. In addition to conducting the business of electing and installing new leaders and receiving reports, we recognized 2016 Honorary Life Members and worshipped through hearing the word, received the offering for AMIS (Atlanta Ministry with International Students), and enjoyed the pageantry of the banner processional. In February 2018, we organized and hosted a PW Retreat at Calvin Center with over 50 women attending from throughout the Presbytery on Friday and Saturday, February 16 -17. Many thanks to Carol Lunsford, Leader Development, who organized and planned the retreat, which had as its theme “Celebrating God’s Gifts.” The Reverend Sylvia Wilson led us in exploring the gifts God has given all his people, especially those of African descent. She provided an historical overview of the Scriptures that tell of God’s people from the African continent and how they advanced the faith. The following group activities rounded out the retreat:

Presbyterian Women of Greater Atlanta continue to support our ministries and missions, including The Presbyterian Mission Agency, Church Women United, PW Birthday Offering, Columbia Friendship Circle, Villa International, PW Thank Offering, Presbyterian Homes of Georgia, Thornwell Home for Children and their Building Families Program, HIV-AIDS education in Kenya, Circle of Friends, PW Honorary Life Memberships, CARE, Presbyterian Ministry at the UN, Childspring International, Mission Haven, Johnson C. Smith and Columbia Theological Seminaries, Atlanta Ministry with International Students (AMIS), and others.

Communications Our District Leaders continue to establish relationships with the PW leaders in the congregations of their districts. They telephone, visit, and email. For presbytery-wide events, PWP encourages participation by using Evite invitations in addition to email, flyers, and phone calls. Our Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery (PWP) manages a webpage located on the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta website, where anyone can access upcoming PW events, a comprehensive yearbook and directory, the most recent issue of PathWays, and additional resources. Kelly Weirich, Resources Coordinator, maintains the webpage and Facebook, and Mary Martin is PathWays editor. The Facebook page is used to share upcoming events and mission opportunities, convey cares and concerns, energize women, and deepen and widen our PW relationships. We continue to depend heavily on email correspondence to communicate with the many PW groups in the presbytery. We have found that many women check their email more than once a day, and as many are quite busy, it is easier to get in touch by email than by phoning. However, we still use all communicative means at our disposal to reach out to women throughout the presbytery. I have two other responsibilities that have allowed me to stay updated as to what is occurring in the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. I have been a member of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta Council, as well as a voting member of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. Respectfully submitted,

Debra Durden
