Snowy Days Enhance Th e Sun’s Harmful Rays

Health Experts say the sun can be damaging and poten-tially dangerous to your skin during the winter months, with snow and ice refl ecting up to 80 per cent of UV radiation — eight times more than water. Canadians need to keep this in mind, as the incidences of melanoma — the most aggressive and deadliest form of skin cancer — has more than tripled over the last 30 years and continues to increase.

Canadian Olympic Ski Cross athlete, Julia Murray, knows fi rsthand the devastating eff ects winter sun can have on the skin. In 1990, her father Dave Murray, famous Canadian skier and member of the Crazy Canucks, passed away from a deadly form of skin cancer called melanoma. Her message now to Canadians: winter sun poses a real risk, so protect yourself.

If you have a fair complexion, you are at greater risk of skin cancer. It’s important, however, for everyone to protect their skin and eyes during the winter season. Be sure to apply a full spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply it every two hours. In addition, as well as wearing sunglasses or sun protective goggles, health experts advise to check your skin regularly for abnormal, new or changing moles.

More information about skin cancer, including tips on how to detect and protect, is available online at www.mel-anomanetwork.ca.

RDCK Improves Transit System Th e RDCK Board has approved changes to the transit

system which will mean improved service for some of the region’s bus riders. In consultation with BC Transit, the

RDCK has been able to expand the transit fl eet to include a 40’ Nova bus for the Nelson/Castlegar transit route. Th is bus will provide expanded capacity and greater comfort for transit users. An extra run was also added to that route to accommodate commuters. Th e Nova is expected to begin service on Monday, December 12. “We hope that by providing expanded service ridership will increase, and the new bus will address the capacity issues that we have been experiencing,” said Randy Matheson, transit coordinator at the RDCK.

“Th is could take more vehicle traffi c from what is a busy corridor. We anticipate that greater transit usage will equate to a reduction in greenhouse gases.” Th e RDCK and BC Transit have also initiated a new bus service to the Blewett area which consists of three return trips per day to and from Nelson. Th e six-month pilot project which start-ed on November 14th will be monitored to determine the service’s usage and viability. Th e North Shore/Balfour tran-sit service was also expanded on November 14th with the addition on an extra run which leaves Nelson at 8:40 p.m.

For bus schedules and route information for the Nel-son/Castlegar service or the Blewett service, please visit: www.bctransit.com/regions/cko/ Or call 1-877-843-2877 For North Shore/Balfour service info, visit: www.bctran-sit.com/regions/nel/?p=2.list or call 250-352-8201.

Kalein Hospice CentreA long held community dream to establish a hospice cen-

tre in Nelson has taken a giant step forward with the pur-chase, by the Kalein Hospice Centre Society (KHCS), of a retired monastery in the Rosemont neighborhood of Nelson.

Formerly home to the Catholic Order of the Sisters of the Precious Blood, the property, located at 402 West Richards Street, features a ten thousand square foot mon-astery building surrounded by two acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and mature trees. Speaking for the Sisters, Sr. Eileen Mary Walsh writes, “We are very pleased that the Kalein Hospice Centre Society is purchasing our former monastery and grounds. It is comforting for us to know that the property we used to own is being dedicated to such a meaningful purpose.”

Th e Kalein Hospice Centre Society was formed two years ago by a group of Nelson community residents who recog-nized that existing hospice care programs and services in our region would benefi t from the creation of a formal hos-

pice centre. In 2010, Kalein was granted charitable status. A philanthropic donation and locally sourced fi nancing enabled KHCS to act on this perfect opportunity when the monastery and grounds became available for purchase.

Providing on-site care and support in a compassionate and beautiful environment for those who are at the end stages of life, and their families, will be a core service of the Centre. While many communities have hospice hous-es, Kaleins campus setting will also include a Centre for Community Education and Dialog.

Th rough off erings such as workshops, special events, training programs, a resource library, and a contemplative garden, Kalein Hospice Centre will provide an environ-ment of beauty, tranquility and safety, in which the vitality of this conversation, in all its aspects, can become as much a part of our cultural fabric as our desire for a youthful life.

Although the eff ort to move the Kalein Hospice Centre project forward has maintained a relatively low profi le up until now, community support has been building. In April

of 2011, KHCS held a commun-ity design workshop attended by over 60 people. Th e results of this community input session have re-cently been compiled into a fi nal report.

Over the next six months, the Kalein Hospice Centre So-ciety will be working on mul-tiple fronts, conducting stra-tegic planning and preparing the formal feasibility study and business plan that will guide building renovations as well as defi ne specifi c programs and services. “As we move forward,” says Leatherman, “we will be working closely with the Nelson Hospice Society, which has pro-vided formal hospice support and volunteer training in our region for over 25 years.”

As with all community legacy projects, fundraising occupies a large piece of the eff ort. Kal-ein’s intention is to cultivate on-going funding for the Centre through the support of larger foundations and institutions, city and regional sources, pri-vate family bequests and a com-munity giving campaign.

Anyone interested in making a donation or bequest to the Kalein Hospice Centre Soci-ety, volunteering their time to the project and activities of the Centre, or learning more about the Centres mission and vision, is encouraged to contact Sandi Leatherman at 250-352-2217 or by email at [email protected]

Take A “CHILI” Dip In Th e LakeKootenay Lake Hospital Foundation welcomes all of

Nelson’s swimmers and fl oaters, young and not so young, to take the plunge for health, personal pride, and appro-priately, to raise money to support surgical services at our local hospital with the purchase of an Insuffl ator, camera system and 3 high defi nition monitors.

Th e quick dip into Kootenay Lake starts at noon on January 1 at Lakeside Park, and will be preceded by hot chocolate and even hotter chili, which can be purchased by donation, at 11:30 am. While the foundation gladly provides the warm snack, in turn, they welcome the en-vironmentally conscious. Please feel free to bring your favorite washable bowl, mug, and spoon.

Pledge forms for the Polar Bear Dip can be found at the front desk of Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, as well as at www.klhf.org. Donations will also be accepted at the hospital and at Lakeside Park during the event.

Start the New Year with a splash. Bring your supporters.

Kaslo to Sandon Rails to Trailscont’d from pg 45

Around 1955 the new Highway 31A was constructed on the old K&S Railway right-of-way. Th is left the old wagon road pretty much unused until 1991 when the Kaslo to Sandon Rails to Trails Society fi rst began and was sub-sequently registered under the Society Act on April 27, 1999. Th e original organizer was Jim Embery of Kaslo and some of the original founding citizens are still mem-bers of the Society. At present the trail is in place from the west end of Zwicky Road in Kaslo all the way to Fish Lake which is a 28 kilometre stretch. Th e trail is very passable, although some work remains to be done.

Th e Rails to Trails Society has an “Adopt a Trail” program which has been a great success. Various community groups and individuals have volunteered to maintain their specifi c section of the trail, looking aft er brush-ing, clearing and light maintenance.

2011 was a busy year with two major washouts due to the high levels of spring run-off . A huge wash-out near the 19 kilo-metre mark took out an old culvert and a section of the road creating a chasm 35 feet wide and 25 feet deep. Th e Recreation Branch of the Min-istry of Forests and Lands donated a 3 x 20 ft culvert and pro-vided funds to hire a large excavator to repair the damage. Several volunteers worked on the project and the use of a small

excavator was donated. Another major washout occurred near the 26 kilometre

mark and was repaired with the construction of a 22 ft long bridge. One volunteer provided his excavator and donated all of the material for the bridge. At the 27 kilo-metre mark, a culvert was placed over a small creek in order to improve the trail.

Th e Kaslo to Sandon Rails to Trails Society welcomes Kaslo and area residents and tourists to come and enjoy our scenic trail. We would also like to extend our apprecia-tion to the Ministry of Forests and to all of the many vol-unteers who have donated countless hours of work to pro-vide our community with this wonderful recreation route. This, and other editorial articles may be viewed, printed or downloaded from the Editorial page at the Pennywise

Trans-Siberian Railway Adventure

Join Anne Ferncase on a personal journey in pictures and stories of people and places halfway around the world. Explore the world of the Bur-yat people whose home is the shore of the ba-nana-shaped Lake Baikal, the deepest and largest freshwater lake in the world. From boisterous and overwhelming Moscow, through the October Si-berian countryside on the Trans-Siberian Railway; a train from rainy St. Petersburg to Beijing; to Ir-kutsk and Mongolia; Ulaan Bataar, an exotic me-tropolis under construction 24/7; Hustai National Park, home to the once ‘extinct’ Mongolian wild horses; Xi’an, the long ago buried Terra-Cotta war-riors from the Qin Dynasty, ending in Shanghai, land of whimsical skyscrapers.

Th e journey starts Wednesday night, January 11, 7:30 pm at the Langham on A Avenue in Kaslo. Entry is by donation.
