PVU Introduction - What is PVU?

„A Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure used to differentiate licensing of software on distributed processor technologies.”

PVU Introduction – Where can I find PVU values?

PVU Table per core

Processor Value Unit [PVU] licensing for Distributed Software:http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

„IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip (socket).

A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.„

PVU Introduction - Why do we use PVUs?

„Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the software Programcan be licensed.

The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by Processor Vendor, Brand, Type and Model Number) and by the number of processors made available to the Program.„

PVU Introduction – Full Capacity vs Sub-capacity

„If using Full Capacity licensing, the Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program.„

„If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, the Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according tothe Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules.„

* An Activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Upgrade – IBM software

■ Software upgrade is served by ILMT similarly as multiinstance case

■ There will be reports where you will see old and new versions of upgraded software

■ PVU is counting on product level, not on version level

■ No matter how many different instances of one product you use on particular virtualization, you will be charged the same way

■ Upgrade of software does not affect PVU calculation

Upgrade – Operating system

■ As many companies, as many polices and different upgrade procedures

■ ILMT usually reports upgraded OS as new one

■ Upgrade of OS usuallydoes affect PVU calculation

■ Work with your IBM Sales representative while planning upgrade OS

Upgrade – Hardware

■ Hardware upgrade is transparent to ILMT users

■ Hardware upgrade is treated by ILMT as configuration change and is automatically taken into account

Conclusions

■ Sub-capacity licensing – rules that are worthy to understand

■ PVU takes into consideration just the server level calculation

■ PVU is calculated based on high-water mark technique

■ Not all the servers have to take part in the high-water mark calculation

■ Audit report period changes do not affect required number of licenses

■ Upgrade of IBM software is not treated the same way as upgrade of OS or hardware
