NEW MEMBERSWelcomeWelcome
When painting subjects that appear to the eye to be white, for example clouds, snow, white buildings or white cloth-ing, some artists paint what they think they see rather thanwhat is actually there. Taking out the white and grey paint isnot really the answer.
The task of an artist is to really try and see what isactually happening with the light. If you look closely at awhite object then you can see that it is made up of a num-ber of colors which may range from subtle yellows in thewell lit parts to blues and lilacs in the shade. Do not justassume to use grey or black in the shade!
White itself has no color but it does reflect othercolors around it depending on the surroundings and theambient light conditions. The light is an important factor inadding in different colors to your whites. For exampleindoors, in artificial light, the shadows in the white parts ofa painting may appear greenish but outdoors they maylook more lilac and reflect the sky. In addition to this thehighlights could be anything up to pinks and golds and asan artist you are really free to play around with these sub-tleties and even exaggeratethen a bit to accentuate thehighlights and shadows.
If you want someexamples to
study then take alook at Degas' bal-
let paintings and alsomany of Monet's paint-
ings and you will getsome true inspiration.
The key is to experiment and to use a multitude ofcolors to represent your whites - try out different shades ofblues and lilacs for shadows, maybe still interspersing withsome greys and use these tones subtly so that they are notjust put in as stark contrasts to the highlights. Subtle tingesof different colors will really give your painting much morepersonality and depth.
The author is a professional artist and has an arts and crafts website(http://www.yourleisure.info/arts) with more info on learning andimproving your painting skills plus ideas on how to make money withyour art.
Painting WhiteSubjects - Don't Just Get Outthe White Paint!By Marian Lishman
PVAA MEMBERSHIP DUESFor over twenty years PVAA’s membership dues haveremained the same; we have always felt it important tokeep yearly dues affordable to our members. Because of these and other expens-es we now find it necessary to increase the membershipdues.
Your membership also enables PVAA to continueoffering art exhibitions and other special events to ourmembers and the community.
