Nominate your stroke hero today

Purple Megastar: Chef Richard Bertinet

If you’ve been inspired to Make May Purple why not get your business or company involved too? Our corporate partnerships team offer a range of ways that companies can lend their support to conquer stroke.

Nominations for the Life After Stroke Awards are open. The award winning chef showed his support for Make May Purple by sharing his delicious purple mousse recipe.

• Chosen charity partnership - the Stroke Association can work with your company to engage employees, raise awareness of stroke with staff and customers and combat the UK’s fourth largest killer

• Sponsorship - get your brand out to a passionate audience on a factsheet or at one of our high profile and sector-leading events like the Life After Stroke Awards, Thames Bridges Bike Ride or Resolution Runs.

• Cause related marketing - collaborate with us on a campaign via your products or services, it is a very simple and efficient way for us to raise much needed money and benefit your bottom line.

• Corporate donations - not all businesses are able to donate money, but there are lots of other ways to donate through a ‘gift in kind’. If you can provide products or services which our events and services might benefit from such as bottles of water for the Thames Bridges Bike Ride or a raffle prize for one of our events, then we’d love to hear from you.

Chef Bertinet runs a cookery school and an artisan bakery in Bath. He got involved with the campaign after learning how many younger people are having strokes and was inspired to share his delicious purple mousse recipe to raise awareness. He said:

“I’m delighted to be supporting the Stroke Association’s Make May Purple campaign. I was shocked to find out that around a third of people who have a stroke are under 65. People can have fun making my blackcurrant mousse whilst raising money to help the Stroke Association make sure they get the support they deserve.”

Make May Purple The awards celebrate extraordinary courage and determination not only of stroke survivors, but carers, volunteers, fundraisers and professionals working in stroke care too. If you know someone who has inspired you then make sure you nominate them, you could be joining them at the star-studded awards ceremony this November!

Here are a couple of our amazing winners from 2015

Professional Excellence - Margaret Mitchell MBEMargaret Mitchell is a Community Nurse and Stroke Liaison Team Leader at Tayside Hospital in Dundee. Margaret has spent the past four-and-a-half decades in nursing and improved the care of stroke survivors in Tayside. She has transformed the lives of stroke survivors in and around Dundee, she was recently awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List for services to healthcare.

Volunteering - Rik ThorntonIn 2011, Rik’s wife Viki had a devastating stroke at the age of 38. Rik gave up his job as a plant operator, to become a full time carer for his wife. The couple attended the Stroke Association’s Long Term Support Group in Downham and Rik has now been volunteering there for over three years - according to group members Rik goes ‘above and beyond’ - as well as his voluntary work he regularly gives talks and fundraises.
