Transcript of Pushkar fair
The Pushkar Fair, or Pushkar ka Mela, is the annual five-day camel
and livestock fair, held in the town
of Pushkar in the state of
Rajasthan, India. It is one of the
world's largest camel fairs, and
apart from buying and selling of
livestock it has become an
important tourist attraction and
its highlights have become
competitions such as the “matka phod”, “longest moustache”, and
“bridal competition” are the main
draws for this fair which attracts
thousands of tourists. In recent
years the fair has also included an
exhibition cricket match between
the local Pushkar club and a team
of random foreign tourists. The
Imperial Gazetteer of India,
mentions an attendance of 100,000
pilgrims in early 1900s.
Zum Vollmond im indischen Monat Kartik
ist der beschauliche Ort Pushkar, im
indischen Bundesstaat Rajasthan
gelegen, Schauplatz für das berühmte
Fest Pushkar-Mela. Es wird gesagt, dass
zu dieser Zeit die Götter Pushkar
besuchen. Ein rituelles Bad an den Ghats
des heiligen Sees gilt deshalb als
besonders segenreich. Zur
Vollmondnacht soll ein Bad zudem von
Krankheit und Unglück schützen. Neben
den religiös-spirituellen Ereignissen an
den Badeghats wird aus Pushkar auch ein
bunter Jahrmarkt. Tausende Inder
strömen mit Pferden, Vieh und Kamelen
in die Stadt, um zu handeln, zu tanzen und
zu feiern. Dabei sind die Kamele die
beliebtesten Attraktionen, reich
geschmückt werden die Tiere verkauft
und bei Wettrennen zeigt sich, wer das
beste Kamel besitzt. Aber auch der
normale Jahrmarkttrubel kommt zu
dieser Zeit nicht zu kurz.
