Our weekend started on Friday night with ourarrivals at the Hyatt House in King of Prussia. Some sistershad enjoyed shopping at the mall prior to checking in atthe hotel! Sisters were greeted with a welcome bagincluding the program for the weekend. Dinner was at6:00 PM followed by a game of Bingo toget to know sisters in our group andfellowship time.

We are sailing through thisyear. The hot weather isnow gone. The air has

turned crisp and it won t̀ be long be-fore we have that first snowfall. Timeis going by so quickly. The state offi-cers and committee chairs are busymaking changes to the state by-laws toadapt to the changes made at the Inter-national Convention. I will keep thechapter presidents updated as they areadapted at the state level.

What has your chapter beendoing? Make sure you share thoseevents and projects with all of us in theKeystonian’s “Chapter News.” Alsosend in the dates of upcoming chapterevents for the “Meet the Crew” sec-tion. Keep the chapter news alive.

Do you have an idea for aconvention workshop? Or do youknow of someone who would have aninteresting topic that we would enjoyhearing. Please let us know.

Remember, the Nancy GroveVisionary Fund award can be given tosomeone in your chapter at the 2019State Convention who has an innova-tive idea that she uses or wants to tryin her classroom. She may meet thecriteria for $500 award.

At the 2019 State Conven-tion, the State Achievement Awardwill be given. If you have a memberwho you feel deserves the awardplease fill out an application found onthe state web site. Remember thisaward is a secret from the person youare nominating.

I have truly enjoyed visitingchapters across the state and I amlooking forward to visiting many

more. It is won-derful to meetso many terrificmembers and see how strong yourchapter activities and projects are.Remember to invite a local Girl Scouttroop to earn the DKG Patch and learnabout our International Society.

Help spread the word thatthere is money available for Scholar-ships and Enrichment Grants forpersonal and professional growth ofour members. Check the due dateand apply. What do you have to lose?More importantly, what do you haveto gain?

Please be aware of the newchanges in the application for Albumof Distinction. The EEC committeeworked hard in making thechanges needed to keep the Album ofDistinction an honored accomplish-ment. Please see the new application,rubric, and criteria on the state website and the AOD article on page 5.

At this time, I am concernedabout our members who are in theSoutheast and have felt the effects ofHurricane Michael. The hurricane hasaffected their lives in so many ways. Ifyou would like to help, please keep inmind our Emergency Fund onwww.dkg.org where you can make a chapter or personal donation directly to our sisters in need.

Your EEC committee met in September toreflect on our first year and make improve-ments for our second year. We met Friday

night and Saturday until noon and had many produc-tive discussions. We hope that our changes provideclarity and refinements.

The first item on our agenda was Album ofDistinction. After many discussions, opinions, andreflections, we chose to revise the nomination form,rubric, and criteria document. Look for an articlefrom Haddie Weber (page 5), Professional AffairsChair, in this Keystonian. The three documents arealready on our State website under the Awards tab.

Our second item was the Friday Night Fling.Since President Barbara is changing the format forconvention we are able to have the Friday NightFling from 8:30 – 9:30 PM. The theme will be ourcruise ship, like last year, but we have planned newdemonstrations as well as last year’s favorites likebingo, trivia, corn hole, ladder ball and the photobooth. So plan ahead and make sure you check outthe Friday Night Fling, a great time for fellowshipand friendship!

Our third item was a discussion about work-shops. This year we will have no society businessworkshops. Greta Marie Taft is busy looking forworkshop presenters. If you are interested, the formis on page 14 and on our State website under theState Convention tab. Just choose State Convention

Forms 2019 and you will find the2019 Call for Workshop Presenterform.

Our fourth item was about our State and In-ternational projects. Marjorie Paradise, ProjectsChair is your go to person to discuss the Girl Scoutsproject. Also, Marjorie can work with you and yourchapter regarding Schools for Africa and Early Ca-reer Educators, which are projects at the Interna-tional level. Check out Marjorie’s article in thisKeystonian.

Our fifth item was about US Forum and Edu-cational Legislation. Susan Fritz is our Chair andvery willing to help you and your chapter regardingthese issues. CTAUN is scheduled for April 5, 2019.Look for Susan’s article to tell you more about thisand many other topics from the US Forum/Educa-tional Legislation viewpoint.

Lastly, Nancy Hills, Visual and PerformingArts Chair discussed the upcoming choral retreats.The changes she made last year were a success ingetting more sisters involved. Stay tuned for moreinformation from Nancy as we plan for State Con-vention 2019.

Now you know why I am so proud of all the hardwork from the EEC committee: Susan Fritz, Nancy Hills,Sandi Klingensmith, Amy Miehl, Marjorie Paradise,Patti Rial, Jeanette Saulo, Greta Marie Taft, PatWalker and Haddie Weber. We make a great team!

The World Health Organization indicates that“Everyone Everywhere” is at risk of climate change.Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expectedto cause 250,000 additional deaths per year due tomalaria, malnutrition, diarrhea, and heat stress.

Our Planet – Our Crisis – What Next? is thetitle for the 2019 Conference on Teaching About theUnited Nations (CTAUN) scheduled for April 5,2019, at the United Nations in New York City. While

details of specific topics and pan-elist’s have not been released, thistimely conference surely will provideinformation about the effects of man-made changesto our world and how we can make an impact. Regis-tration is open. The registration fee is $65 for adultsand $30 for students. College, as well as high schoolstudents, are encouraged to attend. Special hotelrates are available at the Hampton Inn located at East 43rd Street between Second and Third Avenues.

By the time this newsletter hits your inbox,the results of 2018 Midterm Elections will be shap-ing State and National dialogue. Regardless ofwhether you personally are pleased with the out-come, these will be the politicians with whom wewill be working for at least a few years. Get to knowthe people who represent you and let them get toknow you so your voice is heard.

The Album of Distinctionwas established at the StateConvention in the year

2000. At that time there was noapplication necessary, only docu-mentation by members who re-ceived an honor during the year.Those members nominated were spot-lighted at the Birthday Luncheon.

Since then the Criteria forthe “Album of Distinction” wasestablished. It is reviewed by theEEC committee each biennium.This is to keep the Album ofDistinction Award an honor to themembers. Also, this is to clarifyany questions or concerns that ourmembers might have in nominat-ing a sister.

The Album of Distinction(AOD) award is given to recog-

nize a sister who has alreadyreceived an honor or distinctionbeyond DKG. This award sup-ports Purpose #6: To stimulatethe personal and professionalgrowth of members, and toencourage their participation inappropriate programs of action.

Nominees for AOD 2019must have received the honor /dis-tinction during the 2018 calendaryear, January 1, 2018 - December31, 2018.

A member must completethe form on behalf of anothermember. A sister who receivesan honor/ distinction afterDecember 31, 2018 could benominated for the 2020 AOD.

A completed nominationform must be submitted by e-mail

on or before March 1, 2019,and/or sent by US mail and post-marked on or before March 1,2019 to: Haddie Weber in order tobe recognized at State Convention2019.

ALL CHAPTERS are encouraged to submit candidatesfor the 2019 AOD award.Click on the Awards/Applicationtab at the top of the page to findthe form, the evaluation criteria,and the screen rubric. Current/re-cent photo (jpeg) preferred andmust be submitted with the nomination form. FYI, have afriend review and proofread yournomination form. Our committeeis looking forward to receivingyour nomination forms by nomi-nated December 31, 2018.

Since last we met, I have had an article pub-lished in the Keystonain asking sisters to sendme photos of presidential visits to chapters.

To date, only a few chapters have responded, so Iwill make another attempt to get photos from thechapters for the scrapbook of your biennium.

The committee is in process of collectingand making hard copies of photos of Barbara’sbiennium for the scrapbook. A power point of thesephotos will also be created soon. In the spring, thescrapbook will be completed, as will the powerpoint.

Following the death of Lu Page, her chaptercontacted me to try to find out when she served onstate committees and what they were. My researchdidn’t result in much information, as she was notlisted in the Keystonian for the last eight years, andInternational did not respond to my inquiries. Wealso tried to find her utilizing any data base availableat the Joe Paterno Library, but no such data base exists.

At our last meeting, I informed Greta MarieTaft that I would present a workshop on “WhatWorks” as per the group discussion regarding thistopic. The committee will be working on this in thenext few months.

The State Finance Committee is beginning togather information to prepare next year’sbudget. To ensure that our budget meets the

needs of the Pennsylvania State Organization, we arerequesting that all State Committee Chairs andOfficers submit budget requests by March 31, 2019.

Please send your requests to Mary Wilhelm,24 Sussex Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013 [email protected]. If you do not sendyour request, the Finance Committee will assumethat your committee is satisfied with your presentlevel of funding.

Finance Chairs should review the guidelinesfor chapter record keeping. The guidelines are listedin your Finance Committee Guideline Booklet. Ifyour finance chair does not have a copy of the book-let, you can request a copy from the InternationalSociety website. Chapter bank statements, all

receipts, and budget report should be maintained forfour years. Copies of Membership Form 18 shouldbe maintained for seven years.

Thanks to all chapter Finance Chairs andTreasurers for your diligence in keeping the chapterrecords and for sending forms and information in atimely manner to Wanda Keller, State Treasurer, andMary Wilhelm, State Finance Chair.

I will be sending chapter First Vice Presidentsan evaluation survey asking for input on the performance of one of the following: State Treas-urer, the Keystonian Editor, or the Web Master.Please return your evaluation to Mary Wilhelm bymail or by email as soon as possible. This evaluationwill be used to determine stipends for the year.

We are again requesting that members receiveThe Keystonian by email if possible. This saves theState Organization a fair amount of money.

John, our bus driver, did anamazing job navigating the traffic aswe took the southern route intoPhiladelphia. We passed all the stadiums and the Philadelphia airportand arrived on time at our lunch destination.

City Tavern was an amazingtreat! The food was delicious andplentiful. Ourservers shareda brief historyof City Tavernwith us prior totheir excellent service of our starter,main course and dessert.

Next we went to the Museum of the American Revolution. Our visitbegan with the introduction film, Revolution, and a look at Washington’s WarTent. Then we had a special program, Revolutionary Women: Writing About War. Our presenter was excellent and provided lots of suggestions of things we should not miss when touring the museum. We were given time in the mu-seum to do our own self-guided tour and then time to explore the Historic Areaof Philadelphia. Our bus departed at 5:00 PM.

Palm Weaving - Diana BorowskiPalm weaving is a folk art in many cultures, espe-cially during the Lenten season. In this course, youwill learn how to weave simple palm designs,which, when combined, can create beautiful freshand dried displays for the home. Designs taught willbe “cones,” “leaves,” and a small corsage. I firstbegan weaving palm as a child, creating designs with my mother to sell for the church Easter festival.Over the years I have taught severalweaving classesfor the Polish Americans of Lawrence County organ-ization, passing the skill on to others. Anticipatingaround 15 new teachers, the chapter’s project forbeginning educators took on large proportionsas we learned that there were 29 new hires inthe school districts of Bedford, Chestnut Ridge,Claysburg, Everett, Spring Cove, and TusseyMountain! The “back-to-school” gifts consisted of

mugs (some complements of member donations andsome made by Melissa Flynn), stuffed with a $5Sheetz gift card and our tri-fold chapter brochure(complements of Becky Johnen and the Executive Board).Some of the sentiments on the mugs were; “I’m aTeacher, What’s Your Super Power?” and “A GreatTeacher Changes the World.” Gifts will also be distributed mid-school year in January and at the end of the school year in May.

Out of the Box Thinker Dear Out of the Box Thinker:Actually there have been several subtle changes made inthe past couple years, mainly as a result of ideas noted onthe convention evaluation form. Some of these changesinclude:

~ Hard boiled eggs added to the Saturday morning continental breakfast as a protein source

~ Choice of two entrees at the banquet~ Pre-convention activities (wine tasting and golf

outing)

~ Album of Distinction presentation/reception and Friday Night Fling all in the Ballroom and thus all on the same floor, benefiting those sisters who have mobility issues

~ Cash bar during AOD reception, Friday Night Fling and prior to banquet for ease of purchase

~ First timers serving as escorts for officers’ procession at the banquet

~ First timer orientation moved from Friday night to a complimentary breakfast on Saturday morning

Driving back to the HyattHouse, John took us down theSchuylkill Expressway. This gaveus the opportunity to see otherparts of Philadelphia including theArt Museum and

Boat HouseRow. Whenpassing 30th Street Station, a dis-cussion arose about coming to In-ternational in 2020 via the trainand how easy it would be to get tothe hotel.

Saturday evening’s dinnerwas followed by a presentationabout Frakturby EmilySmucker-Bei-dler. Fraktur isan AmericanFolk Art thatwas brought to

Pennsylvania bythe German im-migrants. Therewere motifs ofhearts, birds, andtulips surroundedby elaborate cal-ligraphy for birthannouncements, wedding certifi-cates, children’s bookmarks, toname a few. Emily shared someher own Fraktur work as well.

Sunday morning was aBreak Out workshop about theAmerican Revolution. So all ourknowledge was utilized as wesolved codesand clues tounlock fivelocks andsuccessfullyoutwit theBritish. Therewas amazing team effort and com-petition filling the room as ourpresenter, Susan Allen, Chi Chap-ter, provided support and directionfor the break out teams.

Our weekend ended with lots ofhugs and good-byes. We havefond memories of our time to-

gether! I ap-preciated allthe help andsupport from

Fern Detwiler, Heather Lilien-thal, and my EEC committee.Perhaps we will meet again inPhiladelphia in 2020!

Pennsylvania State Scholarships and Enrich-ment Grants are available to DKG members ingood standing who have held membership for

at least three years. Scholarships will be offered forgraduate study leading to an advanced degree or cer-tification or toward job and/or self-improvement.Credits may be earned during a regular or summerterm at an accredited college or university. A schol-arship recipient may apply more than one time, butan individual’s total may not exceed the maximumof $7,000 during 2017 – 2021.

The Marian Spitzer Robling Scholarship will beawarded to one active member in her 1st, 2nd, or 3rdyear of Delta Kappa Gamma membership who isworking in graduate study. The approximate amountof $1,000 will be awarded each fiscal year. Use theScholarship Application if applying for this award.

Enrichment Grants will be awarded for enrollmentin a Road Scholar program, continuing education forpersonal and professional growth, a travel and/orstudy tour, to develop an approved independentstudy project, to author a book, or to present a paperto a professional organization.

An Enrichment Grant recipient may receive a one-time award from 2017 – 2021 in each of the follow-ing categories:

Enrichment ExcursionsPerusing Panama

Karen Snyder, Beta Gamma

Panama is a country on the isthmus linkingCentral and South America known for its rich cultureand history. Spanish is the official language of thisunique country, therefore I had various opportunitiesto sharpen my Spanish speaking skills. In addition toimproving my language skills, I was able to expandmy understanding of the culture and uniqueness ofPanama. Flying into Panama City gave me an oppor-tunity to see the people and places that make this citythe capital of Panama. In addition, I was able to meetand have dinner with a friend who I haven’t seen forthirty-two years since she lives in Panama. We haddinner, toured the city and she showed me some ofher favorite places. Throughout the trip, I took pic-tures and collected information to include in my curriculum and share with my students.

Visiting the ruins of Panama Viejo, alsoknown as Old Panama, increased my historicalknowledge of colonial times, the gateway to the Inca Empire, famous pirates, and the relationshipsbetween the English, Spanish, and Dutch in the past.The tourist attractions in this part of town offered“hands on” knowledge and experiences.

Since Panama is famous for the PanamaCanal, it was imperative to visit the Canal Museum,the Miraflores Locks, Gatun Lake, and take a cruisethrough the canal. I was fascinated with the knowl-edge, hard work and planning that made the canala masterpiece, not only in its time period, but for future generations.

Of course a trip to Central America wouldnot be complete without a hike through the rain forest to see an abundance of nature and wildlife.Monkeys, sloths, a variety of birds, plants, and ani-mals are welcome sites when exploring a jungle

atmosphere of the Panama rain forest. The Embera Indians, which number 22,000

in Panama, can be found in the Darien Jungle. Thiswild, desolate place in Panamahas no roads. A few Embera In-dians can be found living in theChagres River area. I spenttime with them to learn abouttheir tribe as well as the othertribes that inhabited Panama. I was able to donate items tomembers of the tribe, spendtime with the children, witness

a tribal dance, learnabout the unique customs and traditionsof this group of indige-nous people, watchthem make hand-made

articles, and buy something from them to supporttheir economy.

Panama offered a plethora of activities to dothroughout my visit. Bargaining at the Kuna IndianMarketplace allowed me to practice my Spanishskills, talk with another group of Indians living inPanama, and support the Kuna Indian community. I was able to witness craftsman making dozens of different products using the Mola embroidery, a wellknown craft in Panama.

Thank you Delta Kappa Gamma for award-ing me an enrichment grant. It allowed me to take atrip to Panama, enhance my cultural understanding,and improve my Spanish language skills. I will beable to share this unique country and knowledgewith my students.

Irish Genealogy Is Not for the FaintheartedFaith Jack, Alpha Xi

After a brief trip to Ireland in 2016, I decidedto research my Scots-Irish Jack ancestors. Being alibrarian and an amateur genealogist, I thought this

would be an easy task. After hours of searching, all I knew was that James Jack and his wife ElizabethMcNulty married in Ardstraw, Tyrone County between 1719-1725 and emigrated to America sometime between 1726-1755. Wanting to know

more, I registered for a week-longIrish Genealogy course at the Genealogical Research Institute ofPittsburgh (GRIP) inJune 2018 with instructor David E.Rencher, Chief Ge-nealogical Officer ofFamily Search.

Rencher’s style wasquickly evident on the first daywhen he stated he takes exceptionwhen people who have Irish heritage are told, “Don’t bother,all records were destroyed in 1922 in the Four Courts bombingduring the Battle of Dublin.” Although many civil records weredestroyed, understanding the history and laws of Ireland canyield other resources. Mainsources of property records are:Griffith’s Valuation, the Tithe Applotment Books, estate papers,and maps. In Irish genealogy, nega-

tive evidence plays a major role.Some resources may listCatholics, others Protestants, orpoor vs. wealthy, rural farmer vs.urban dweller, so omissions cantell you religious affiliation, socioeconomic status, occupationand locale. This process of elimination research makes Irishgenealogy painstaking, but thedogged researcher can succeedand perhaps locate the land wherean ancestor lived. In rural areas,the terrain and often the buildingshave remained unchanged for centuries.

In Ireland, many tenantfarmers had a lease of lives,meaning that as long as at leastone of the three people listed on alease was living, the family heldthe lease. In the event of the deathof one of those listed, a rental feecould be paid to add another name. In many in-stances, children werelisted, so families

held leases for several genera-tions. Perhaps the Patrick Jackwho farmed 75 acres owned bythe Marquis Abercorn in 1858, inthe townland of Meaghy, Ard-straw parish, in the barony ofLower Strabane, in County Tyrone(Source: Griffith’s Valuation) is acousin of my James Jack (1705-1776) whose father was Patrick(1678-1726). Now to find thoseelusive Abercorn family estate pa-pers….

This summer, I plan totake the second half of Rencher’scourse and eventually visit North-ern Ireland. “Go raibh maith agat”to the DKG - PA State AwardsCommittee for enabling me to extend the Irish branch of myfamily tree.

Grand Canyon and YogaFitMelissa Flynn, Alpha Beta

My trip to the Grand Canyon is one, veryimportant piece in my journey to realizing self andcontinued practicing of deep meditation and mind-fulness. I began this journey while still working,consulting with school districts, practicing mindful-ness and doing tasks with intent while encouragingothers to do so as well. On retirement last January, Iadded the yoga practice piece, not knowing where itwould lead me, but feeling the importance of practicing.

In February 2018, I took my first YogaFitTeaching Training class. The depth of knowledge,the beauty of the physical practice, and the impor-tance of deep meditation became more clear to me.

There are many places on our earth filled withbeauty and inspiring awe, but viewing the majesty ofthe canyon felt touching, breathtaking, and spiritual,all at one time.

After a restful night in our accommodationsin Williams, Arizona, we were treated to a wild westshow and boarded our train forthe 1.5-hour trip to the south rim.The transportation there was agift itself, as I had never been inthis part of our country and wasable to absorb the beauty of avery different landscape. Andthe train car itself was topnotch!

Arriving at the rim, we were introduced tothe splendor with a bus ride along the rim, arrivingback at our accommodations and given the rest ofthe day toexplore.Althoughthere werequite anumber ofothervisitors,the wideexpanseallowed for many moments of quiet reflection as myhusband and I walked along the rim.

The sound of the birds flying above, the windin the small trees and the echo of the voices I couldalmost hear coming from the canyon filled the needto connect with the basic goodness of the earth. Thepeacefulconnectionand open-ness wastransforma-tional andis a placein mymind andheart that Ican return to in my yoga and meditation practice.

I will continue to teach and learn yoga as Ihave now completed over 100 hours of training withYogaFit. I am grateful for the opportunity this triphas given me, expanding myself and giving me in-spiration for classes that I can share with others.The focus on helping people and especially teachersto relax, to breathe and to apply practices ofmindfulness throughout their busy days has beengratifying. Sisters - Namaste’ (The light in me,recognizes the light in you.)

HOW DO YOU GET TO CARNEGIEHALL? PRACTICE, PRACTICE,

If someone made a listof the top music halls in theworld, Carnegie Hall in NewYork City would definitely beamong the top places. Thissummer I had the honor ofbeing selected to attendCarnegie Hall’s Music Educa-tor Worship July 11-14th, whichwas titled “You Are What YouPlay.” One of their top admin-istrators greeted us to open the

workshop and explained why they have a wholewing dedicated to music education. He said thatCarnegie Hall does not have a problem selling outtheir concerts, but they know they have to invest in

the future of music educationto keep their concerts alive foryears to come.

For four days we hadclasses on conducting methods,building repertoire includingstudent creativity and improvi-sation, engaging students usinginquiry and reflection, anddesigning curriculum toinclude connections in theaffective domain. Universityprofessors and professional

musicians taught our classes as we also watched theirrehearsal strategies with local NYCstudent musicians.

The workshop treated us to one of the highestquality of performances, the Tony award-winning Broad-way musical, Carousel, featuring Renee Fleming, JesseMueller, Lindsay Mendez, and Joshua Henry. Not only wasthis a musical delight, but seeing these performers remindsus of what level we should strive for as educators.

During the workshop, we also had practices as performers ourselves. This allowed us to not only createbeautiful music, but observe the rehearsal strategies by ourconductors. The workshop closed with our group perform-ance of the orchestra and choir performing Leonard Bernstein’s “Take Care of This House.” Our conductor told us that the combined number was selected to remind us of two things:

1. It is the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernsteinand that we are in “His House” of Carnegie Hall

2. We, as educators, need to realize the “house” we have with the children weteach. It is our responsibility to take care of them.

So, as the impact of walking the halls whereLeonard Bernstein, Julie Andrews, Ella Fitzgerald, LucianoPavarotti, Benny Goodman, and countless other musicianshave walked, I think of my revived inspiration fromthe workshop to help “Take Care of the House” ofmy future music educators. I end this with Bernstein’swords, that can be an inspiration to all educators:Take Care Of This House, keep it from harm,If bandits break in, sound the alarm,Care for this house, shine it by hand,And keep it so clean, the glow can be seen

all over the land.Be careful at night,

check all the doors,If someone makes off

with a dream, the dream will be yours.

TAKE CARE OF THISHOUSE, be always on call….…

For this house is the home of us all.

Twenty-four-year member of BetaChapter, Lucretia Page (Lu) passedaway October 13th. Lu started her ca-reer as a social worker, then onto spe-cial education, and finally, as anadministrator until her retirement in2016. Lu had been active in DKG atboth the state and local levels during her24 years, servingin many capacities. Shecontinued to work with teachersin hercommunity after retirement, mentoringthem as they furthered their educationin administration. Lu was currentlyserving as Church Council Presidentat St. Daniel’s Lutheran Church.

Dr. Ednilou Reeder, of Beta Xi,passed away November1, 2018.Ednilou had been reinstated to DKG in2017. She was a classroom teacherand reading specialist during her teach-ing career. She also tutored studentsduring retirement and was passionateabout adult literacy. She volunteered atthe library and local food bank.

February 6, 2018

Ann Louise Natale passed away onFebruary 8, 2018. She was initiated in1969. She taught over 40 years in theelementary setting, 38 of which werein the Connellsville School District.In the community, Ann belonged tomany organizations that gave back andhelped children. She was very activein St. Rita RC Church, serving on manycommittees and giving of her time and talents.

In September, we heard from theMercer Area School Districtadministration on the challenges of a diverse populationin a rural school setting and getting students to stay inbrick and mortar school. In October, Bonnie Barnescame to our meeting to tell us all about her Golden Gift

scholarship training in Austinand also to remind us of thescholarship opportunitiesDKG offers all members.

Chapter News ContinuedThe sistersof Psi havebeen active

from their first meeting of the year wherethey collected over 1,000 school suppliesfor the “new teachers welcome” in theirmulti-county region. Too, member KarenBall reprised her “All that Glitters” presen-tation that she presented at convention inJune. The next meeting featured LindaStahlman who recounted her enrichment

grant travels to Switzerland where she fol-lowed the footprint of her Anabaptist rela-tives. The third meeting, a Ways and Meansinternal fundraiser, focused on the four re-cipients of scholarships. Additionally, themembers provided a $600 donation towardthose victimized by Hurricane Michael.President Nancy Hills arranged for a secondmini-arts retreat held on November 3rd, featur-ing the many talents of Psi (Productive, Special,and Imaginative) people. The Girl Scout proj-ect is well underway with activity packetsand local enthusiasm.

The Beta Pi Chapter ofPA has had a very event-

ful start to our year! First, we kicked off our year in Septem-ber with our annual Meet and Greet social. At our Meet

and Greet, current membersgot to mingle with our new in-ductees while enjoying deli-cious appetizers and drinks.

Our chapter president, Marilyn Rogers, also presented ourCalendar of Events for 2018-2019. Next, Beta Pi decided tocreate and distribute a “Back to School” favor for every

female educator in the UpperMerion Area School District. Teach-ers received a highlighter that wasattached to our DKG brochure witha tag wishing each of them a “Bright

School Year!” On the back of the tag was our chapter webaddress. The purpose of this project was to brighten an edu-cator’s day, share our chapter’s story to ALL teachers (exist-ing and new hires), and promote chapter recruitment/mem-bership. Finally, our chapter hosted our 7th Annual DesignerHandbag Bingo & Basket Raffle at the Black Rock FireCompany, Oaks, PA, on October 12, 2018. This was an ex-tremely successful event for us! We hosted over 200 partici-pants, raffled off 60 fantastic baskets, 20 lucky winners wenthome with designer bags, 1 lucky winner went home withproceeds from our 50/50, and 1 lucky winner went homewith a jackpot in gift cards!We raised a significantamount of money for ourgrant-in-aid scholarships andcommunity outreach programs! Bingo Committee

Zeta Chapter chose to take an idea for possible new membersfrom the President’s Page. At our October meeting, the mem-bership stuffed 200 bags to be distributed to the female teach-

ers at two local school districts. This “treatbag” included a DKG pencil and tablet, acandy bar (sweet) and a bag of chips or pretzels(salty) along with a DKG information pamphlet and a post-card inviting them to join us at our November meeting. We

have plans to do this again in the spring with two different school districts in our area. Our membership andprogram chair were key leaders in seeing this project to fruition.

stepped back in time and explored the roots ofthe DKG through a program“Do You Know Our Story?”Using a script prepared byMary Anne Battaglia of AlphaPhi and Becky Johnen ofAlpha Beta, all members took

on roles as one of the foundersof DKG, International President Cathy Daugh-

erty, and State President Barbara Gasperini, orrepresented key aspects of the Society. Postersof our founders, current leaders, and DKGsymbols highlighted the narrative.

Gifts for New Teachers: During Candace Claar’s presidential biennium (2016-2018) one of the chapter’s projects was GIFTSFOR BEGINNING EDUCATORS. Threet imes a year, teachers new to the dis t r ic tsrepresented by chapter membership weregiven gifts with inspirational messages.
