Why the Purple Line? What does it connect? When will it be built? The Maryland Transit Administration (www.purplelinemd.com) is working on detailed plans and assessments as part of the Preliminary Engineering phase of the Federal approval process.

The federal and state government have al-ready invested $200 million. The Purple Line’s high ridership numbers make it one of the top transit projects in the country and a shoo-in for Federal Funding if Mary-land arranges funding. Construction would begin in 2015 and take three-five years.2

However, state funds run out in 2014. Without further funding, the Purple Line will not be built! That’s why we need your help.

What can I do to help? The Maryland legislature must take action to ensure that our transpor-tation priorities are funded. Due to years the neglect and gas tax losing ground to inflation the Maryland Transportation Trust fund can no lon-ger maintain our infrastructure and support the quality of life that makes Maryland such a great place to live. Investing in our state’s future will require additional revenue, but on average every dollar invested in mass transit creates $6 of econom-ic activity.3

3 Maryland Transit Administration.

Montgomery and Prince George’s Coun-ties are two of the fastest growing com-munities in the nation. Our transporta-tion system is not keeping up with the growth. The Maryland Transit Authority estimates that by 2030 it will take a bus 40 minutes to get from Bethesda to Silver Spring in rush hour. On the Purple Line, it will take only 9 minutes.

Ridership projections predict that 17,000 cars a day would be removed from our congested roadways as 69,300 people a day would enjoy the ride on quiet, comfortable light rail trains.1 This change would reduce exhaust fumes in our com-munity and decrease our nation’s depen-dence on oil.1 Maryland Transit Administration.

The Purple Line will be a 16-mile modern light rail line, connecting Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Lyttonsville, Silver Spring, Long Branch, Takoma/Langley, College Park/the University of Maryland, M Square, River-dale Park and New Carrollton. The Purple Line will form a 21-station arc around the northern side of the capital area, tying together major Maryland suburban centers in Maryland’s two most populous counties and making it easier to move throughout the region.

The Purple Line will connect to four branches of the Metrorail system (Red twice, Green, and Orange), three MARC rail lines, two AMTRAK lines, dozens of bus routes and two intercity bus stations. Finally, the Purple Line will complete the Capital Crescent Trail into downtown Sil-ver Spring, with connections to the Metro-politan Trail into D.C.
