Welcome to the GFM
The GFM are delighted to welcome your child to Bay House School and
Sixth Form
The Gosport and Fareham Multi‐Academy Trust (GFM) is a group of local
schools (Bay House School and Sixth Form, Brune Park Community School,
Gomer Junior School, Rowner Junior School and LWS Academy) that work
together to champion the needs of Gosport and Fareham learners across
all phases of education – Secondary, Primary and SEN. The GFM
recognises the need to work in partnership with Hampshire County
Council and all local schools to build better outcomes and opportunities
for the young people of Gosport and Fareham. It is through our collective
endeavour that we can make a difference, with Gosport and Fareham
learners’ achievement being greater and aspiring them further. The local
commitment to this initiative is overwhelming – schools and communities
see this as an opportunity for a group of schools to become greater than
the sum of their parts.

Welcome message from Head of Year 7
Hello and welcome to Bay House School.
My name is Mrs Arnold and I will be the Head of Year during Year 7. My job is to
oversee transition from primary school and monitor your academic progress and
personal well‐being whilst you are in Year 7. I will work in the year office alongside
the Deputy Head of Year and the Pastoral Support Officer for Year 7 and we are very
much looking forward to meeting you. We have already started visiting junior
schools and I am hearing lots of amazing things about you. We believe you are all are
going to make an awesome year group.
When you arrive at Bay House in September, on your first day you will be allocated
to a tutor group. Your tutor will be a very important person to you as they will see
you every single day. If you have any concerns or problems, then you need to let
them know straight away so we can work to resolve them. Do not worry if you are
not in a tutor group with your friends, you will still see them and you will make lots
of new friends.
You can come and see us in the year office whenever you need to, we are here to
support you. We particularly like to hear your good news and achievements.
Together with all the teachers and support staff of Bay House School, the Year Team
will work hard to provide you with an exciting and enriching school experience
where you are encouraged and motivated to achieve your very best. We promote
kindness and respect for everybody and encourage you to get as actively involved in
your school life as possible. There are lots of amazing opportunities available.
You will be a crucial member of the Year 7 team. Every single one of you has
something valuable to contribute that will make us the incredible team we are going
to become. We look forward to hearing your ideas about how to make the year
group truly awesome. This is an amazing time for you, full of fresh starts and new
opportunities. You can learn new skills, discover hidden talents and make friendships
that could last a life time.

Tutors and the School day
What tutor group is my child in? All pupils will find out their tutor group on their first day in September What does a Tutor do?
Your child will spend 25 minutes with their tutor at the start of each school day
Together with their subject teachers, a tutor will monitor the progress of your child
The first point of contact is your child’s tutor. Where possible, your son/daughter will remain with the same tutor from Year 7 to Year 11 and they will get to know each other very well. The tutor will help your child settle in and will help them work to their full potential.
We operate a two‐week timetable so the lessons in Week 1 will not be the same as the lessons in Week 2. In order not to get marked as ‘late’, pupils MUST be in their tutor base BEFORE the late bell which rings at 8.35am
The School Day 8.30 Move to Tutor 8.35‐8.55 Registration 8.55‐9.00 Move to Lesson 9.00‐10.00 Period 1 10.00‐10.05 Move to Lesson 10.05‐11.05 Period 2 11.05‐11.20 Break 11.20‐12.20 Period 3 12.20‐1.00 Lunch Break 1.00‐1.05 Move to Lesson 1.05‐2.05 Period 4 2.05‐2.10 Move to Lesson 2.10‐3.10 Period 5* 3.10 Dismissal

The Virtual School
What is the Virtual School?
To help us meet the needs of every learner at
Bay House School, we have teams of colleagues
within our ‘Virtual School’ who work together
with pupils and with parents. If pupils require
support they will be immersed in the ethos of inclusion and equality. The
aim is to enable all pupils to access the curriculum. Support is available for
literacy, numeracy, language as well as developing social and emotional
skills and will vary according to individual pupil needs. Pupils may work
individually or in a small group and for some lessons there may be
additional adult support within the class.
Mrs Dale is the Virtual School Director of Operations and is normally the first point of contact for any concerns or enquires about the support for learning. Mrs Smithbone is the SENCo for Bay House School

achieve their best at school is through the partnership
between school and home. There are times when you will need to get in touch

home learning, to share things that are happening at home, to flag a concern or
simply to update your contact information. *Please note, if you would like to
meet a member of staff in person, you must always arrange an appointment
beforehand as we cannot always guarantee staff availability due to teaching
commitments.
Each pupil and Tutor group is attached to a Year Office, with a Head of Year and
a Deputy Head of Year, and an extended team of colleagues who provide a wide
range of pastoral expertise and experience.

Attendance
For a child to reach their full educational achievement a high level of school attendance is essential. At Bay House we want every child to have every opportunity to achieve to their full potential; we stress the importance of attendance and punctuality at all times, and have very high expectations for excellent attendance and punctuality.
10
Promoting Good Attendance The foundation for good attendance is a strong partnership between the school, parents and the pupil. To support this focus we:
Provide information about the importance of excellent attendance Report to you on how your child is performing in school and what
their attendance and punctuality rate is. Celebrate good attendance and reward good or improving attendance Set attendance targets for year offices and tutor groups, and display
them around school Set individual attendance targets for pupils to help them focus on
improving their attendance.
The Pastoral Hub team work alongside Tutors and the Year Offices to support pupils achieve excellent attendance, and consistently monitor pupils’ attendance and punctuality. If attendance falls below the expected levels, colleagues with an expertise in ‘attendance support’ work with the young person and their family. A range of strategies are deployed to support improvements in attendance and include:
In school support Home visits In school attendance panel Legal interventions (as outlined in Hampshire County Council’s code of
conduct.)
If you need support or advice with attendance, please contact your child’s Tutor or The Pastoral Hub. Please visit our website for further information and guidance on Attendance.

Top tips to supporting reading at home
Taking a small amount of time each day to read suitably challenging books
makes a real difference to academic progress. At secondary school we aim to
support pupils to become independent readers. Here’s how you can help:
Set aside a designated family reading time – at least 15‐30 minutes
each day
Support your child with reading material – loan books from the
library, buy books as gifts, source books from charity shops/car boot
sales
Encourage your child to swap books with friends
Be a reading role model – share what you are reading and show an
interest in what your child is reading. Instigate book discussions.
Look out for reading difficulties – if you spot your child having any
difficulties with reading, please contact the school so support can be
given
18
Foundations of Learning
The Foundations of Learning is a framework
to enable us to help pupils reflect on their
strengths and areas for development in four
key areas:
Self‐Awareness is about helping our learners understand what motivates them, their strengths and weaknesses and the positive impact they can have on the world around them.
Independence & Resilience is about enabling learners to become confident and skilful enough to take control of their own learning, building on mistakes and persevering to achieve long‐term goals.
Thinking Skills is about exploring the way we process information, from the understanding of a new concept, to making links between new and existing knowledge and ultimately to 'creating' new knowledge and layers of understanding.
Collaboration & Relationships is about developing an understanding of others and how to shape our words and actions to build strong relationships and achieve successful outcomes when working with others.
Please visit our website for further information on Foundations of Learning

Frequently Asked Questions
My child is unwell ‐ who should I notify?
Please contact the Year Office by 8.00am to notify of any absence. This can be
done via phone, email or the MyEd app. Alternatively, please contact the School
reception who will ensure the message is passed on. If your child is unwell whilst
at School, they will be asked to report to our Pastoral HUB and will then be
assessed by one of our trained First Aiders to decide whether they need to go
home. If your child has a specific medical need, please ensure all details are
clearly recorded on your child’s registration forms and a member of our First Aid
team will contact you on a separate basis to discuss medical plans if required.
My child has a medical appointment ‐ who should I notify?
Where possible, please try to make appointments out of school hours. If this is
not possible, please notify the Year Office by phone, email or via MyEd who will
then ensure the appropriate member of staff is notified (dependant on the time
of day).
Can my child bring their mobile phone to school?
Mobile phones and other mobile technology may only be used in lesson time
with the teacher’s permission. All devices and headphones should be turned off
and put away before entering the school site. Mobile devices and headphones
are likely to be confiscated if seen by a member of staff.
Can my child cycle to School?
Yes, but all cyclists must dismount and push their bike on to the site. We have a
number of cycle compounds available and we strongly advise that pupils bring a
suitable lock. We also strongly encourage the use of cycle helmets for ALL pupils
who wish to ride to school.
20
My contact details have changed ‐ who should I notify?
Please notify the Year Office who will forward the changes on to our data team.
It is very important that you notify us of any change to personal details we hold
for you in order for you to be able to access information regarding your child.
What happens if my child loses something?

name and tutor group. All lost items will be stored in our Pastoral HUB until
