Hello Everyone We had a lot of fun at our French Dress Up Day last Wednesday. Red, white and blue were the predominant colours and we saw be- rets aplenty, many curly moustaches, a few croissants, a sartorial Marie Antoinette and an enigmatic Mona Lisa! Many thanks to all those who joined into the spirit of the occasion. On the same day, the French Poetry Competition was conducted for the 21 Grade 3/4 children who wished to participate. A representative from Alliance Francaise was on hand as the adjudicator and we will be informed of the results in Term 3. Many thanks to Madame Higgins for organising this terrific event. To complement the theme, Canteen Di organised French Meal Deals for the day and this was hugely successful – so much so that we had to call in reinforcements to assist with the preparation. Lending a hand to prepare nearly 400 baguettes were Gillian Seery, Jane Fellingham, Melissa Macrae, Ana Shields, Moni Schelbach, Teresa Everett, Franca Cantone, Susan Harberts and Ella Flanagan. Di also suspects there were a couple of other helpers and apologises if they dont find their names listed here. Thank you all for working so hard to make the day particularly special. Our Grade 1 and 2 students have recently enjoyed an outing to Edendale Farm in Eltham to complement their studies on this terms Sustainability focus, Tip Toe through the W orld. The activities they were involved in included a creek walk, discovering the benefits of growing their own food, and learning how valuable water is as a resource. The emphasis on environmental concerns extended through to their lunches – which had to be rubbish free as the only waste that can be left there is compostable or recyclable materials. Many thanks to our Grade 1/2 teachers for organising this enriching activity and to the many parents who attended as assistants. Last weeks Assembly kicked off with great performances from the Boys Vocal Group and the Violin Ensemble. The audience great- ly appreciated the talents of both groups. Once again we were delighted to be able to present a large number of Care, Learn and Share Awards. They went to: Eliza Huynh and Stella Nicoll for helping in the canteen with the French Meal Deals; Behrad Maghsoudi and Clio Ziskov for taking the time to approach Di to thank her for her efforts with the Meal Deal; Matthew Cook for his initia- tive and organisation of the Autism Spectrum Australia fundraiser; Cleo Georgiou, Victoria Panas and Katherine Margaritis for their initiative and organisation of the Big Issue Homeless fundraiser; Srishti Sharma, Chloe Wong and Lula Parrott for challenging them- selves in Maths; Dylan Tran for making a class recycling bin out of re-used materials; and Jacquie OKeefe, Gemma and Luke Full- ard, Eva and Sam Harberts, Benjamin Macrae, Georgiann Pattas, Felix Hardy, Matilda Slifkas, Angelina Petalas, Ellia Tsamourtzis, Megan Campbell and Millie McMenamin for their magnifquecostumes on French Day. You may remember that one of our fundraisers last year was to help support the rebuilding of the Vunikavikaloa Arya School in Fiji after it had been severely damaged by Cyclone Winston. The assembly was thrilled to hear a report, accompanied by photos, that the rebuild is completed and that the school has re-opened. Such tangible evidence of results for effort are most satisfying. The assembly also heard that Dan Stavretis and Sarah Lu were our Artists of the Week , 6NK & 4RP won the W alk/W heel W ednesday trophy and that Killara and Cooma won the House Competition. All children from grades 4 – 6 have recently completed, or will soon complete, the Student Attitudes to School Survey. This is an annual survey commissioned by the DET and is conducted from Grade 4 – 10 in all Victorian Government Schools. Previously com- pleted using pencil and paper, it is now an on-line survey. The children are assured that their responses remain strictly confidential and the results the school sees are of aggregated data only, not individual responses. Areas covered include how they view themselves as a learner, the relationship they have with their teachers and how safe they feel at school. Along with the Parent Opinion Survey and the Staff Opinion Survey, the Student Survey forms a key component of our accountability processes. Several BPPS students competed at the Division Cross Country last week. Whilst they all acquitted themselves well, Jasper Kay- Kneebone (2 nd ) and Ben Gale (6 th ) put in exceptional performances and will now progress to the Regional event. Our Boys and Girls Hockey teams competed in the District Hockey 7s today and we are confident they will have represented the school admirably. PUPIL FREE DAY

TUESDAY

Congratulations to Ky, Rhys and Ari Ingram who recently completed the 5km MS Walk. The boys were raising money for Multiple Sclerosis, a cause which resonates with them due to a family member suffering from MS. Well done lads! The inconsiderate driving and parking habits of some of our parents continue to cause us concern. We have received another embarrassing complaint from a neighbour about parents parking across driveways. The neighbor states that she is often prevented from entering or exiting her property because a car is parked over her driveway and the car owner is absent from their car. We remind all parents that parking across driveways is illegal, as well as being selfish and discourteous. Parking in the Ruth St carpark to collect children is also not allowed. One particular parent chooses to do this repeatedly; we will publish the registration number if this prac-tice continues. A final reminder that next Tuesday 20 June is a Pupil Free Day. Staff will be involved in a day of professional learning at BPPS called Towards 2020, which will support us to meet the goals of our Strategic Plan. In preparation for the senior school production of Porridge there is a small but hard working group helping Gillian Seery with the costumes. It is no mean feat to have approximately 200 students kitted out ready for the performance, so well done and thank you ladies. Eric Regester

Week beginning June 5th. The grade 3 and 4 children have painted some amazingly wonderful interpretations of Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. I could have chosen many to have been artists of the week, but had to limit myself to just 5. These are on display on the ea-sels between the library and the art room. Congratulations to Hailey Roberts of 4CF, Charley-Rose Wen of 4RP, Judy Wu of 4TL, Raff Evans-Maher of 3JT and Coco Sun of 3AP. Well done to all the grade 3s and 4s on your fantastic work! I am looking forward to see what the grade 1 and 2 children will do with Vincent’s Sunflowers. Do get along to the NGV to check out the Van Gogh and the Seasons Exhibition, where you will see many of Vincent’s other paintings. Also, we need many more donations of coloured plastic shopping bags for use with the grade 5 and 6 children in the coming weeks. Please just leave them in the art room at your convenience. Sarah Lu of 2SQ will be the artist of the week for the week beginning June 12th. Her artwork is the charming penguin standing on an icefloe. Whilst all the grade 1 and 2 children made these “the same”, they have all pro-duced individual characters, just like they are individuals themselves. This work used materials that may have otherwise gone into landfill, pertinent as the whole school considers the concept of Sustainability this term. Well done Sarah! Ginger Evans Maher 5DJ During and After the Fire Congratulations to Ginger on creating a fantastic piece of work using Supermix oil pastels. Ginger’s depiction of ‘During and After the Fire’ effectively demonstrates a technique called impasto which involves ap-plying oil pastels very thickly using short, sharp strokes. Ginger’s art-work shows the roaring heat of a bushfire and the devastation it causes followed by the incredible regeneration of the Australian bush. Well done Ginger!

Jennifer Hortin & Lisa Trevorrow

Une Magnifique Journée Française ! On Wednesday June 7 BPPS celebrated our (third) annual French Day. There were over 300 French meal deals in the canteen. Many thanks go to Di, her generous volunteers and captains Stella Nicoll and Eliza Huynh for getting it all together. An adjudicator from Alliance Francaise came to our school to listen to the poetry recitation, in French, from our 21 entrants. She was quite impressed by the high standard demonstrated by the students. Results of the competition will be announced in Term 3. All around the school the rouge, blanc et bleu of the French tricolour were sported by the majority of our students enjoying the free dress opportunity. A big BRAVO goes to those who dressed up in famous French icons, ranging from the Mona Lisa, Marie Antoinette, Marcel Marceau, Eiffel Tower, gigantic escargots, croissants, chefs and painters. Merci beaucoup to all the parents, staff and students who got into the joie de vivre of the day! Madame Higgins

Thank you to those who have put themselves forward to help. There are many days still left to fill; please complete the Canteen Help-ers form if you can help. If you feel you cannot commit to the canteen the whole day remember anytime you can help is appre-ciated If you are unable to work on your selected days, could you please let me know on 0419 506 318.
